  • Scrooge is a 1935 British fantasy film directed by Henry Edwards and starring Seymour Hicks, Donald Calthrop and Robert Cochran. Hicks appears as Ebenezer Scrooge, the miser who hates Christmas. It was the first sound version of the Charles Dickens classic A Christmas Carol, not counting a 1928 short subject that now appears to be lost. Hicks had previously played the role of Scrooge on the stage many times beginning in 1901, and again in a 1913 British silent film version.
The 1935 film differs from all other versions of the story in one significant way -- most of the ghosts, including that of Jacob Marley, are not actually shown onscreen, although their voices are heard. Only the Ghost of Christmas Present (Oscar Asche) is actually seen in full figure -- the Ghost of Christmas Past is a mere shape with no discernible facial features, Marley's Ghost is seen only briefly as a face on the door knocker, and the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come is just an outstretched pointing finger.[2]
Why the film was made this way remains unclear; it is obviously not because British filmmakers could not achieve special effects, since we do see Marley's face superimposed on Scrooge's door knocker.
Another aspect making this film different from other versions of the story is that Seymour Hicks plays both the old and young Scrooge, rather straining the credulity of the audience, since by this time, the sixty-four-year-old actor was visibly too aged to convincingly play a young man.
The story is also severely truncated, even more than in the 1938 MGM film version, although the 1935 version is actually slightly longer. Much time is spent at the beginning of the film -- before any of the ghosts appear -- setting up the atmosphere of rich and poor London. Scrooge's sister Fan and Fezziwig are completely omitted from this version.[3]
This is the first of only two sound versions in which Tiny Tim is actually seen lying dead. In the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come sequence Bob Cratchit grieves at Tim's bedside. The 1999 Patrick Stewart version also contains this scene.
Maurice Evans appears briefly as a man harassed by Scrooge to pay his debts.[4] Donald Calthrop portrays a Bob Cratchit who bears an uncanny physical resemblance to John Leech's illustrations of the character in the original 1843 edition of the novel.
Two versions of this film exist; each has a differently designed opening credits sequence, and one of the two versions omits the very last scenes.[5]
Also, copyright for this film was never renewed and therefore it is in the public domain and can be shown on multiple stations in a market. For years it was kept out of circulation, due to the extremely poor quality of most of the surviving prints. In the past few years, it has been remastered.
    Cast:
Sir Seymour Hicks -- Ebenezer Scrooge
    Donald Calthrop -- Bob Cratchit
    Robert Cochran -- Fred

    Garry Marsh -- Belle's husband

Mary Lawson -- Poor man's wife
    Barbara Everest -- Mrs. Cratchit
    Eve Gray -- Fred's wife
Morris Harvey -- Poulterer with Prize Turkey
    Philip Frost -- Tiny Tim

My maternal Grandfather loved Christmas. He decorated inside and out. We would move an ornament on the tree just to see his reaction. He knew where every ornament should be. It was such fun.
Christmas Eve, after church, we would sit around him as he read the Christmas Story from the Bible.
He made Christmas such fun and ensured we understood the true reason for the season.
He was loved by so many. We used to save Reader's Digest to make angels for people through the Senior Center. Or ensured those without family received a basket from the church.
    What a caring loving man.
Prayers for a blessed Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

Simm is definitely the benchmark by which all versions of a Christmas carol are set but you have got to give Seymour Hicks credit as the first major movie actor he didn't have any past performances to draw from and had to create house own scrooge charcter all by himself.

In 1858 , Charles Dickens came to Dublin, Ireland, where he did a reading from the Christmas Carol...Oh, how I wish I was there ☘🇮🇪🇬🇧🌻🎄🥳🎁

The 1962 Animated Mister Magoo's Christmas Carol musical is also excellent. The 1984 television movie A Christmas Carol is also excellent and faithful to the 1843 classic novel A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. The 1935 classic English film version titled A Christmas Carol is excellent under the title Scrooge here in the United States of America with Seymore Hicks as Ebenezer Scrooge and the excellent! The 1951 classic English film Scrooge A Christmas Carol with actor Alistair Sim as Ebenezer Scrooge is excellent! was born in the late fall of 1978 in central Kentucky and raised in northern Kentucky. I have seen all four of these films! These four versions are the best film adaptations and the most faithful to the 1843 classic novel A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. I highly recommend all four!

I too, recently watched at least 3 of the film versions & 1 animated version. All were true to the original Dickens novel & I thoroughly enjoyed all of them. 📽️
I was born and grew up in South Texas in the times where television was still relatively new and being from a large family; having a blue collar worker Dad; a stay at home Mom and 10 siblings.., it was our tradition to read the Bible 📖 & hear the story of the Nativity, while in a close huddle with everyone, sipping on a cup of hot chocolate & sharing sweet breads or cookies. 😋
Those were my 'formative years' and helped to ground me in what are noble characteristics, teaching you to be true to your calling & accept your strengths, your faults & to always be humble, kind & thankful for all your many blessings, as well as being generous with others.
It wasn't until I was in middle school, we got our first television 📺 & I was able to see so many of the animated classics like Rudolph, Frosty, and some of the more famous Christmas films like.., What a Wonderful Life 😅 and..,
    A Miracle on 34th St. ✨
I still get those same warm 🤗 fuzzy feelings when I have the opportunity to see these other films that I never got to see when I was still a little kid. 😊
So thank you 👍🏻 for uploading these great classics, for someone who, like myself that had never seen them, can enjoy their poignant and encouraging message! 🙏🏻
    Merry Christmas🎄 to all, in 2023! ❤
