Ok, so this track clearly contains a rendition of Penumbra Phantasm, which is not only the most famous unreleased Homestuck song, but also one of the most famous Homestuck songs in general. As stated, the original track was never released (even though it was planned for Volume 10). Even on the Homestuck soundtest, all we have of Penumbra Phantasm is a few piano pieces and two clips, one being 8 seconds and the other being 30. What is notable about the version of Penumbra contained in this track right here is that it sounds similar in tone and instrumentation to the soundtest clips we have of the original, but it isn’t the same. It also, to my knowledge, is not a piece of any other HS song that references Penumbra. What does this all mean? It means that, buried in the jarbled clusterfuck, there’s a previously unheard of (possibly even new) version of Penumbra Phantasm that we’ve never heard before. I think it’s plausible that Toby Fox, composer of Penumbra Phantasm, has finally created a version of the track he’s satisfied with, and that this is foreshadowing of an eventual official release, presumably as part of the Homestuck^2 soundtrack.
wait what, this exists??? i saw a twitter post about penumbra being included in this track, it's really just there? it's not subtle or anything.. from what i could tell the song is credited to james roach, but maybe toby could've asked him to tease it in there for some reason. this penumbra has toby's signature guitar, so i'm inclined to believe it's from him. anyone can use that soundfont, but i don't see what james has to gain from impersonating toby's...instrument choices. the bells, while not definitive, also give me toby vibes. im not normal about this song lmao, i'm searching for crumbs of it everywhere. definitely think it'll be included in deltarune somehow edit: if you use audacity's "remove vocals" tool, you can hear piano notes backing the guitar. all in all, it doesn't seem like a one-off- i don't see why they'd put in that much effort for a 20 second snippet in pesterquest of all things. the full song probably does exist
