The thing about the writers of salvation is, they had a trilogy planned. Alot of people criticise salvation for not being the same future war that was shown in T1 and T2. But the writers had planned that salvation was going to be the future war but pre plasma technology, and you can see this if you acknowledge the fact that Arnies T800 doesnt show up until the very end of the movie. The sequels that were planned would show more battles at night, with armies of T800s marching across the battlefield with their iconic plasma rifles .
The sequels were ment to build this up, and the trilogy ending with the resistance winning the war and sending Reece back to 1984 and a reprogrammed T800 to 1992, bringing the entire franchise full circle. Which would have been awesome to see.
But instead we get dark fate 😥 which ruins the franchise . Killing john Connor makes all the previous films pointless (including T1 and T2 )

Well, McG was such a bad director! The sets of Salvation didn't look like the sets of the future war in T1. And the only good part in Salvation was Marcus's story, from the beginning until he met John, which had already been written before McG was hired.

The reason why they used machine guns with bullets is because Skynet had not developed plasma based weapons yet in this time period. The other 2 movies that were not made were going to show all this as it got closer to 2029. The story was going to be darker and darker until the third movie like shown in the original Terminator movie. Unfortunately we will never see how it was going to end. I believe that the reason why a lot of people had a problem with it is because Arnold Schwarzenegger was not in the movie. I don't find him essential to the series after the first 3 because it is not truly about him. It is about Skynet vs the resistance.

Salvation should have been set deeper in the future so we could have an army of T800s and lasers. That's the future war I want to see. The reason this was set so early in the war, is because they have to try and make a trilogy so held off on the stuff we really want to see. They should have given us one balls to the walls future war movie instead of hedging bets for future sequels

  • @NitroNEXT

The complaint about it taking place during the day, as well as the lack of laser weapons, aren't that important or valid in my view. The film isn't set in 2029 as we saw during the flashbacks of T1 and T2. This is an earlier time period of 2018, and as we can clearly see with the Terminators themselves (the T600 models instead of the T800s) technology is still developing, and that would include laser weaponry. If a sequel had been made, obviously we would time skip to a later point closer to 2029 in which laser weapons had been developed, they could then also explain that Skynet's improved technology now made it impossible to survive during the day, forcing them to travel at night. These are all problems that are easy to explain away, so I'm not sure why this complaint still persists.
I think it's ill-advised to start off a future trilogy and have everything in the night right away, it was smart to have elements in there that the audience is familiar with to keep the story somewhat grounded. After general audiences had taken that first step and been acclimated to the future setting, then they're ready for the next step: introducing them to a darker version of that world. It's all about creating a smooth transition from past movies.

I respectfully don't understand why everyone wants to see Kyle get sent back. I want a future war movie, but I don't want it to be framed where I already know the ending. They could go deeper into the future, show us things we haven't seen. Kyle said we won the war, but he was obviously wrong because of T2. The war still went on. They could show us this time period instead of the parts of the war where we know what happens.

Not necessarily. According to a 1990 draft of T2's script, the older John Connor sent the reprogrammed T-800 back right after he sent Kyle, which suggests the first T-800 and the T-1000 had both gone through the Time Displacement Equipment already, rather than the T-1000 being sent back on a later date.

*Nelo Wolf wrote: "If only we got the second and third sequels leading to the assault on Colorado and kyle Reese going back in time. Full circle"*
Terminator Salvation can't circle back neatly to the events of the first film, because the future shown in Salvation isn't the same as the one Michael Biehn's Kyle came from. Judgment Day occurred in 2003/4 in this new timeline, as opposed to 1997 in Biehn Kyle's timeline. And T-800s were being developed years ahead of schedule in the new timeline, suggesting that Skynet's technology was advancing more rapidly.
Given all these changes, there's no way the precise events which led to John's conception could be perfectly reproduced, and they clearly don't need to be in order for this version of John to exist. He exists, not as a consequence of anything that can or will happen in his future, but as a consequence of events that occurred in a different future, in a different timeline. That timeline either no longer exists, or exists separately from the timeline he's in.
If this version of John were to send Yelchin Kyle back to 1984, he wouldn't be ensuring his own conception. He'd (at best) be ensuring the conception of a different John, in a different timeline. And maybe not even that, because there's no way he could be sure that Kyle and Sarah would conceive a male child, or conceive at all, without perfectly recreating the events of the original film, which just isn't possible from the timeline he's in.

As we know this movie was supposed to be a trilogy so saying that salvation was set in 2018 where skynet just started it's production run of the terminators T-600 while they announced the T-800 at the beginning of the film and showed it at the end of the film, this movie was going into the future into "2029" if had the other films completed it, sadly that didn't happen so we never got to see full development, but we would have seen James Cameron's gloomy dusty future war with laser weapons and a battalion of T-800's shrouded in darkness, Nobody ever mentions this not even Mr. H sad!
PS there was no laser weapons in salvation because it was set in 2018 not 2029! Just remember the script was supposed to develop further for that to occur.

it felt like the war was only just really starting at that point. Apart from skynets technology, it wasn't over the top flashy and futuristic. Most advanced technology would be destroyed or taken over by skynet early on in the war and not yet developed by it fully for mass production, so more of a even war. Skynet had deadlier better tech but not enough to wipe humanity out yet, the resistance wasn't yet coordinated it had more of a individual survivalist attitude. But may have Still had the resources left to actually stop skynets expansion it it's tracks, they just didn't have the leadership yet.

I really like this movie. The giant robot collector was amazing, the CGI for it was really good too, considering I don't think that would be a practical effect. The Terminators were done very well too though. Especially the one with the minigun where Kyle Reese pops up first. The movie actually felt like humanity was actually at an end. Basic story line which was fine with me, a little twist in it. Just straight action and a terminator movie theme done pretty well in my opinion. You cant just throw original cast members into the movie and expect it to be amazing. This one did so much more with an entirely fresh cast and that's hard to accomplish. Terminator is just that dead of a franchise that I was open to accepting new faces, if the movie was good.

I respect your opinion, for me that giant robot thing didn't belong in this universe. I watch T1 and T2 (which depicts deeper into the future) and I have a sense of the types of robots Skynet is capable of producing. They could have used a take on an HK-Tank, but the giant CGI robot looks like something out of Transformers or Robot Jox. T1 and even T2 have this dark tone. I felt Salvation was closer to the tone of Transformers than Terminator. I give them credit for going into the future, I just wish it was better executed.

Yeah I think there is so much potential story to tell. And I mean the character stuff. Living and fighting in a dystopian hellscape.
And one big thing, they need to double down on the blood and violence. Terminator has become a watered down adventure franchise. Give the franchise it's balls back. I know gore has never been a cornerstone of the franchise, but take It to where the opening of Saving Private Ryan went. Of course make the main focus on the characters, but don't be afraid to show the hell that these people live in. The rats, the nasty food, the broken TV's with fire. T5 was the begining of the end of the framchise. in fact the movie would have been a good addition if it didnt screw John Connor. T6 decided to take it one step further and fuck John Connor completely and end him for good.

You could see the strives into plasma tech with the projectiles used on the HK's IMO. And with humanity still being around during the daytime and essentially having an airbase in the open where they operated is okay even if a bit iffy but that just means that Skynet was still working on getting total control over the earth but that's just me. I always enjoyed this movie. The thing about Salvation was it was supposed to be the first film in a trilogy of Future War movies. A lot of people had trouble with how this movie did not resemble the Future War shown in T1 and T2 (no plasma weapons, too much daylight, etc.), but again, this movie is about the early stages of the war. I rather liked seeing the T-600, and thought Christian Bale made a good John Connor. One of the biggest flaws of this movie though, is that John isn't the main character - it's Marcus Wright, which in my opinion was an error on the director's part. John plays more of a supporting role in this film. I would have much rather the film be all about John stepping up and becoming the leader he's destined to be. The end battle with the T-800 is amazing in this film, I'm glad they made the T-800 menacing once more. Such a shame though we didn't get the other two sequels to this movie. What could have been...

John was rising up and becoming a commander after his Sargent died in the submarine, You failed to mention that, "HE WAS ACTUALLY STEPPING UP TO BECOME A LEADER" John also was grouping the residence fighters over the radio. This is his character development, the movie had character development for both Marcus and John it showed John a lot he was in a lot of scenes he had to be for the writers to develop his character and uprising as a leader it was the first movie trying to establish his character development mind you this was supposed to be a trilogy I think they delivered pretty good. Marcus was a support character for the story he was equally important as John to develop the criteria needed for plot development. I honestly loved both the roles of both characters.
The second movie would have been John as the main character but it just didn't get the chance! So you can't complain about this movie because it was supposed to be a trilogy because it wasn't even finished 😂😂😂😂

I actually enjoyed Terminator: Salvation. It's the ONLY Terminator film to actually take place in an apocalyptic world.
T1, T2, & T3 had a lot of talk about how John will grow up to be this amazing hero of humanity. Even the Sarah Connor Chronicles had a lot of talk. We never really get to see John in action. Until THIS film. The ONLY film.
Yeah, there wasn't futuristic lasers yet and all that. But this was an early apocalyptic world. The T-800 model 101 Terminator wasn't even supposed to be around yet. In the story, it was made years before it's time. Maybe lasers weren't supposed to be around just yet either.
After Salvation, the franchise just went dramatically down hill. Genisys completely forgot that all the prior Terminator movies and show were supposed to be about John Connor. Arnold may always be the star. But John is ultimately the hero.
Genisys pooped on that and went in a random direction. A direction that wasn't even original, I might add. What do I mean?
Well, both Genisys and Dark Fate decided to CGI a young Arnold Terminator. Salvation beat them to the punch on that. In addition, Genisys did a little bit of time hopping. They time travel from one point in history to a later point in history to escape a Terminator.
Guess what. The Sarah Connor Chronicles did the EXACT same thing in their pilot series. Negative points for Genisys's initiative for unoriginal ideas.
Plus, Genisys killed off John Connor right off the bat in the beginning of the film. The new Terminator taking on John's image. The face for humanity's hope is now the face of a Terminator. Not cool. Not entirely different than what Dark Fate did. Also killing John right off the bat.
Both Genisys and Dark Fate make all the former Terminator movies and series obsolete. Pointless and all for not. Nothing anyone ever did in the former films would make a positive difference in the future thanks to Genisys and Dark Fate.
Most people accept T1 and T2 as canon for the Terminator franchise. But as far as sequels go, at least Rise of the Machines and Salvation acknowledged the importance of John Connor. And that is a critical piece of information. Mandatory if you wanna make a Terminator story, in my opinion. -OG

I agree on the fact this franchise needs to go in the future wars, and give credit to Salvation for trying. But I can't give them many points for execution. Yeah we saw John Conner, and he was played by an amazing actor. But he was a one note action hero with little depth. They did a disservice to the character. Bale could have done some amazing things! We should have got a real war movie. For me the future wars are what we saw at the opening of T2. The future of Salvation feels so watered down, both in tone and violence. I mean you have that sub plot with that deaf kid that's clearly just put in there to appeal to the masses, much like the whole movie.
I've waited since 1984 to see Skynet, and in Salvation it's basically guarded by one CGI T800. That place should be crawling with machines!
They don't even have the common sense to use the actual Terminator theme until the end credits. You know the director doesn't give a shit when they try to throw out all the old themes and scores, which would have been an easy way to create a similar atmosphere to the first two. But feels like McG really didn't care. Like every director since Cameron, it's not about honoring what has come before, it's about trying to create something for themselves off the Terminator name and parlay into a trilogy.

@@faz6877 Yes, I agree. Salvation had a lot of problems. The Terminator/human hybrid Marcus was just weird. And Skynet in communication with future Skynet to try and win the war was also weird.
I think just keeping things plain and as basic and simplistic as possible is a much better way to go.
Playing with the intricacies of time travel shouldn't be an emphasis in a Terminator movie.
Is there time travel in Terminator films? Yes. But it's not about time travel. You're gonna lose your audience when you focus on something like that. This isn't Star Trek where you can explain things with techno babble.
It seems like every Terminator sequel since Judgment Day has just been missing the mark as to where it should go. And as much as one can criticize this film, they keep putting out more that's even worse than its preceding film.
Which, ironically, makes Salvation actually look better and better each time. Lol. -OG

A lot of these film makers miss the point and don't understand why T1 & T2 are so loved. The nerve to think they can use time travel to go back and erase the franchise lore. As long as we have CGI crashing into each other......that's why fans like Terminator right?
So yeah, I Salvation hurts because I see so much potential. And give credit for going in the logical direction. But Genysis and DF are slaps in the face to the franchise. I certainly hold Salvation in much higher regard than those sequels.

The issue with the terminator films is every film after T2 is trying to outdo it by copying it. Sometimes bigger isn't better. If there had to be a T3 they should have either made it real dark and gritty set in the future war or made it more like the first being a slow paced survival action horror film. I would even go as far as to say sarah and john stopped judgement day and that story is done. Just set it in 2030 and have the terminators appear in present day not using the time machine. The story should have been about how machines help us but have come weaponized like most things do. The terminators in this new future are man made and are used in human wars. Have man be the start of a new war using terminators not skynet... I honestly thought dark fate would be like this

Salvation is probably the best and most underrated entry after T2. It is flawed but I admire its passion to deliver the future war, it didn’t look like Cameron’s war but it is set in 2018 where sky net hadn’t reached the technical proficiency as seen in 2029. Maybe if McG got to make a follow up they would’ve shown how sky net evolved and how the resistance changed battle strategies.
The problem with salvation comes primarily from two things. 1. Sam Worthington’s character Marcus was unnecessary, why send Marcus to find Kyle
Reese only to use him to lure John Connor into a deathtrap at a sky net facility, sky net knew that Reese was connors father. It’s pretty silly.
    2. The film lacked an R-Rating and as a result the terminators didn’t have much of a threat presence as they should have.
Other than That I enjoyed it ok. 3/5

TS wasn't a mess and deserved a sequel at least for its unique approach to the franchise, which is certainly more than can be said for the way they eventually did go. It's far from perfect of course, and the movie does kind of lack the heroism of who to route for that made the first 2 movies so good, but at least TS left a clear path to follow that would've led to the war that inevitably came and added another layer to the franchise, instead of the rehash they ended up doing that would sadly ruin it all.

    • @faz6877

For me that clear path for the next movie is not necessarily a compliment. I watch T1 and T2 and they have closed endings. I feel the Salvation ending is just a set up / cash grab for the trilogy. It's a non ending. It's basically John Conner telling everyone to tune in next week for the next adventure. Personally the movie they tease at the end of Salvation is the movie I want. I want to see the actual war depicted in the opening of T2. I think making Salvation a trilogy, the years it takes place, the ending......none of it has to do with story. It's all about setting things up for a trilogy so the studio can make more money. And they don't respect the fans enough to give us one solid movie before they set things up for 2 additional sequels (which never come). They didn't even use the Terminator theme in Salvation until the end credits. Salvation was clearly not made by a Terminator fan.

Terminator: Salvation is the type of Terminator film I wanted to see after Rise of the Machines (a film in all its flaws has an ending that works). I’m on board with the first two acts, but it’s the third act that falls apart.
I don’t even hate the day time stuff plus, this seemed about 15 years into the war and during that time period maybe they hadn’t decided to go out at night….that continuity error didn’t bother me.
What did bother me was the heavy focus saving Reece as a teen half of the movie. I would have preferred the third act not focus on that so much building a relationship between John and Kyle and use Sam Worthington’s character as the base for human terminators for both humans and the machines.
I also liked how the film wasn’t a time travel movie.

That is a spot on assessment about the aesthetics of the film. It's largely why I didn't care for this movie, it just ignored everything that was set up in the original movie. I mean they had the template right there and just ignored it. For the record I'm not some stickler for continuity and minute detail, it's just that the overall look of the future in the original movie was much better than this one. It felt more oppressive, hopeless and terrifying. Salvation is bright and gaudy, more interested in it's set pieces and explosions to a point where you could swear it was directed by Michael Bay.

I think if it had a bigger mix of day and night time fighting less focus on Marcus (more on the Resistance as a whole). A bigger focus on the struggle of survival as well as radiation. In a way conventional weapons still make sense since the T-6pps are vulnerable to them and they are gonna be the only firearms humans have. If it was more so about the meft evolution of Skynet fighting the war, the T-800 coming to production as well as plasma weapons I think it could have sealed this movie better. As well as going for a R rating to give it the gritty dirty feeling surviving in a post nuclear war world.

There are things I didn't like and would have done differently. Scrap the Transformer Terminator and replace with an HK Hunter-Tank. Have John already the main resistance leader and eliminate the whole submarine resistance plot. Instead of discovering the code that EMP's Terminators, the resistance should have discovered the plasma technology to create weapons that make fighting Terminators more effective. Change the ending where John needs a heart transplant, instead make it where Marcus has to stay behind to manually detonate the nuclear fuel cells. That being said, I loved the Future War setting and Anton Yelchin as Reese. The Terminators actually felt like Terminators (need more animatronics in movies and a healthy dose of CGI).

Love this film. This is the route they should've went. They were gonna get to Lazers and updated terminators and all that. It was gonna end up looking like it did in the first two as far as the future

It’s getting better with age. Only the very ending made me groan. Could have been a cool reboot.

This is hands down the best Terminator film made after T2. T3 had some ok moments (Arnold with the casket and minigun), but Genisys and Dark Fate were TRASH.

The real redeeming quality of this movie is that it was MUCH better than Genysis and Dark Fate
As far as John Conner jumping out of a plane to a submarine, look at Hunt For Red October for the same ish scene

Thé movie had good ideas some good actors but the execution and Skynet plan was just ridiculous then you had John in the skynet factory calling t-700s as T-800 then you have John telling MArcus that Kyle was his father and did not even flinch, it makes no sense.

The film couldn’t really be set at night. It would be far too ‘dark’. Even despite the lack of ‘laser guns’ etc, was I thought really good.
I think what hobbled Terminator: Salvation was that it didn’t know what to focus on, Marcus Wright, or John Connor.

You have to respect and appreciate the fact that this movie at least tried something different instead of recycling the same story, over and over again using time travel as a plot device.

Dud you sound like the narration voice from Warrior Kings. Every time you speak I hear Artos!
