New Mike Patey video? I must stop whatever I’m doing and click. I could literally listen to this gentleman speak about physics math and engineering all day. So much talent in one human wrapped up in a sincerely kind person. Top tier respect from me, sir for pretty much everything you, your brother and family accomplish.

Joentexas /agree. This sort of statement would normally be hyperbole, but in Patey's case, it's genuinely true. If you watch the entire Draco video series, Mike's bonafide creative genius is demonstrated again and again. From the big picture to tiny details like the names of all those who helped or are friends put all over the plane, its meticulous and the finished product looks beyond professional. It's truly amazing that we get to watch something like this.
Except da Vinci wouldn't talk to you because you are you. Couldn't, because he spoke Italian and is as you said 500 years out of our time. If a lion could speak English we wouldn't understand them.

Mike you are one of the few people left that can pull off this kind of genius, with Burt Rutan retiring there aren't many of you left.

@@Bendejo-lm8wo That's not exactly true. part of success in life is simply being in the right place at the right time. luck. Studies show this. Many people have done exactly the same as Mike Patey and others and never succeeded. and often times it was a matter of timing. they introduced a new idea too early or even to late, when another person hit it at just the right moment. Hard work counts, but there are tons of people that work just as hard, if not harder. there are people smarter too. Now, it doesn't take pure smarts to succeed, we know that. but timing can be everything.
I'm not here to rain on Mike's success. from what I know he earned and deserves every bit of it.
the issue I'm here to rain on is the false idea that such people are rare, in short supply, and the baseless accusation that they aren't hard working enough to achieve the same.
There are people that have far cooler ideas, and know far more than he does about those ideas, are comparably as hard working, and they simply never got the right opportunities to achieve a level of success that enables them to self fund their visions. workaholics are not in short supply, and people with ideas are not in short supply either. the opportunities to pursue them are. And not everyone is a good business person either, and that prevents a great many of people from ever earning enough alone. They have amazing ideas and talent, but need business partners to help them where they are lacking.
the Great Filter preventing great minds from achieving their potential is frustrating at times. I se far too many people who clearly have potential crushed by society doing everything in their power to destroy them.
@@SoloRenegadenot sure where you live, but the world I have seen definitely lacks workaholics, in particular ones that continue to be workaholics past the first couple set backs. I do agree that we don’t lack people with ideas, I would disagree however if someone claimed they were all good ideas…
What was it, like 5 to 10 years ago or so when there was tons of adds for patent filling because everyone had the next invention that was the best thing ever? Lots of people with ideas, less with good ideas, much less with an ounce of perseverance.
I don’t want to rag on the average Joe too hard, I feel it would be disrespectful to the spirit in which Mike puts out these videos. But I’d rather see more people pull up their selves, get educated, and get back to work than to have more excuses as to why they could’ve been but just weren’t.
My Seventh Grade Shop Class teacher was a pilot: everyone in class had to design and build a wooden airplane, our grade was determined on how well the plane flew! Love your dedication, Mike!
Listening to Mike talk about being the fastest made me envision a clean shaved Howard Hughes without the tissue boxes on his feet. You can really feel his passion.

Thanks for finally doing some videos on Turbulence! The Lancair Legacy has always been such a beautiful plane, and yours is the ultimate version of it.
I’ve always wanted a deep dive explanation into Turbulence! You say that industry professionals said it couldn’t be done. With this recent OceanGate situation, I want to understand the difference between someone that is ego building, and someone that truly breaks barriers safely. In another video can you talk about your process to design something completely innovative and exactly what your skills are and what kinds of outside help you get? Maybe explain when to trust your own abilities and when it’s time to ask for help. Thanks again for all your inspirational videos! I’m almost to my ATP minimums and I’ve been deeply inspired by the Draco and Scrappy series. I hope to fly with you guys someday and hope to build something cool too.
Why dont you watch Mike building Draco or even Scrappy.

Imagine if the Wright brothers could see what you and Mark are doing for aviation, their heads would explode at the shear genius of your projects, your designs and engineering skills are only surpassed by your passion Mike, you are a wonderful person, the whole world could take a leaf out of your book on how to make the future brighter by hard work, persistence and love for your family and friends, you are a true legend my friend.

Love how you push the boundaries of physics and aerodynamics to make one of a kind monsters like turbulence and scrappy following you for yrs and each new aircraft you build has more boundaries pushed than the other. The most awesome one i loved the most was scrappy wing how it could expand for more lift or retract when more speed was needed. Legend plain and simple.
I always wondered about the paint scheme, very cool! Thank you for going back and telling us about Turbulence. It is a phenomenal aircraft built by a true aviator.

Love this series and all your videos!! Can we please get us some flying videos of all your planes - including Turbulence? We see high quality build videos, but unfortunately the long video series always stops once the build is complete, with little to no actual flying videos. Can we please get a ride a long in your planes? Max performance takeoffs, high speed flying etc?

So many things to love about this video, but I think the paint job contest was the best. The student who came up with the design did a fantastic job, and it looks incredible on this plane!

Glad you are okay. Heard about your engine trouble yesterday . Your skills at handling the emergency were on point. The fact that the plane didn't come apart is because of the extra reinforcement you built in to it. Just glad you're safe.

My third car is a 2016 GT Mustang that i and the wife drive every here and there when we get bored of our daily drivers work commute. We drove it stock for about 3 years but soon got the HP bug and went with a single turbo setup which made 550whp on 93. My wife was a little intimidated at first but was able to convince her that if we can get it to 650whp id be super content with it and not touch it anymore, to which she agreed. So its been almost 3 years at 650whp and i love it, she has learned to drive it with confidence along with me saying i promised i would never... Ever... Attempt to make a 1000whp and im a man of my word. But the car still runs great to this day. However, i had dropped it off at a place to get some maintenance done and some other little work completed to which my wife would be the only one available to pick it up. I just hope she wont know the difference between 650whp and 1600whp 😂😂😂... Ill tell her the new tires make all the difference.

how do you calculate the load on a spar vs airspeed? I'm not an engineer, is it known math can you be 100% sure that if i build the wing this way it will still be on the aircraft at this airspeed? A lot of aircraft I have flown have a cruise speed and a vne that are not that far apart, that makes me feel like it must be hard to keep the wings glued on.

I was watching Dan Gryder’s Probable Cause tonight and suddenly wondered when Mike was going to put out another video. I checked and dream come true!! Awesome video. I’ve been super excited hoping to hear the background story on Turbulence. And here it is. Wow! The engineering and build qualify you put into your airplanes in such a short time is astonishing. Lengthening the nose and putting that big prop on, are both destabilising in pitch and yaw. Having done a my fair share of stability and control testing, those mods can make life very interesting!
I doubt there were sufficient margins in the original design to balance those mods. So curious how you engineered around it. Nice work!
Will be coming up. And yes, those are 2 critical aspects to doing extreme mods.

I have been in the Experimental Space since 1996 with a L-39C VH-ATD, A-37B VH-AZD, two Bell Cobra AH-1Ss VH-SHC and a Mirage III-I0 Ex RAAF, A3-42 with our own Australian CASA approved Maintance Authority in house.
I cannot add anything to all these great comments. It is just amazing and we run out of superlatives to describe Mike Patey.

I started following you with a young Draco, astounding Draco, then saw this spindly little tube airframe that became the phenomenal Scrappy, I watched as you progressed through one of the most fantastic house/pool builds and with 1000-year floods, and now I am even more enamored learning the history of Turbulence. In light of all the we know that you can do, what scares you to attempt? I'd think nothing, but what, in your mind, is your limit? Your engineering work on this plane is incredible and inspiring, as always, but I also want to give a shout-out to the student who came up with the incredible paint design. It's beautiful and I've never seen anything like it.
there's a number of things i love about Mike, one is he doesn't look like your average nerdy aeroplane designer, there's a little twinkle in the eye and a mind in the background doing overtime, this guy is way brighter than he looks, a bit like myself (although we might never consider we are bright - say that to Richard Branson), and that sentence resonates with me in chunks, all those people saying things cannot be done, your mad etc etc, your head is in the clouds, just urges anyone on to prove the idiots wrong and i love finding holes in things and proving what they think they know isn't worth knowing anymore because its old and out of date, the world advances indeed, and their tiny brains don't alloy for potential growth, they cannot do joined up thinking
i like to say while all the idiots run around like headless chickens 'thinking outside the box' in the frantic rain, i'm the one inside nice and cosy 'thinking inside the box', how to overcome a problem with something off the shelf with minor modifications or combining two or more products proved and tested to do a job that no one has considered - upper management seem to get in the way with their lines of procedure and process, there are always shortcuts into getting things done and quick and safely, we have so many issues to overcome, climate change and so on, there are so many things we can do and i don't understand why other resources are not used, i.e. the military on Wildfires, (ideas i have will be different to what you either know of or can think of) as for Mike squeezing fuel into every space, i love it, the military have done it for years, adding fuel into flaps, vertical stabilisers etc so why not other airframes (cofg needs considering always, reference VC10 on the ground was written off because the tail was full of fuel),
as an armchair designer and an aviation enthusiast i always considered planes were built to be light in order to fly, but its the science, the physics that makes planes fly, like the wings were only added to keep the navigation lights apart, (aviation joke) a plane can in effect be the same as a bird, its a solid mass, its about power to weight ratios and so on
there is a solution to every problem, never say no, crack on and do it, back to work and make some money at it

I'm a composites mold maker in the racing industry. I would love to work on a project like this. The only aircraft thing I've done was doing repairs to the wingtip tanks for an old Bonanza V-tail.

I once saw an aircraft, that was nearly identical to this one.
It did a couple of low flyovers, over the local airport, (KOKV), and then it landed. I watched it meet the runway and thought it was about to strike the prop! It was a very aggressive turboprop, like Turbulence.
And it even had bright orange paint!
I never learned who the pilot was or what aircraft it was...
I would trust Mike to design and build a submersible to go to the Titanic!
Do a forward facing camera on the top of the tail and tips of the wing and have it landscape onto the garmin
