Nice Set Pete, It was cool to watch you play the set. I got pretty lucky that the 9 of diamonds fell in 3N on board 3 but the queen could have been onside earlier and it would have helped. I'm not sure how well placed you would have been if they didnt compress the club spots at trick 2. I hate hands like that. Maybe a low spade is right maybe your club, or maybe my diamond.
Thanks Gavin - It seemed like a super intricate set of boards. Hands like board 3 where there seem like 100's of possible lines of play are such a nightmare for me. I'm glad I'm not the only one who hates hands like that. Nice set!
I remember I checked the second board after playing. There's actually a double squeeze to make 13 tricks after East led a spade (double dummy ofc, since you would need to cash the ace of spade right after the first heart finesse).
So Lia plays Lebensohl as 2NT+3NT after weak 2M as choice of games (4cdOM + stopper) and presumably 2NT+3OM as 4cdOM without stopper. Then I assume direct 3NT shows stopper and direct cue is no stopper, no 4OM, asking for 3NT with stopper but willing to play 4m without stopper. Is this now the most popular way to play Lebensohl? Given a choice between this method and traditional Lebensohl (slow shows), what is your preferred approach? I assume you play the same scheme when they overcall our 1NT naturally. I am aware of Transfer Lebensohl and Rubinsohl, but feel free to recommend them anyway :-)
I really dislike "slow shows", not because I think it is fundamentally bad but because I hate system that when you don't have an problem it creates one. You have a hand that wants to just bid 3NT but you cant. I think it is set up to cause people to have bidding misunderstandings in the real world.
Thanks for replying. Yes, I agree that not being able to bid 3NT feels backwards. But it's not just a swap they play, so Slow denies stop. They also changed how to show 4cdOM. Instead of using 3cue and 2NT+3cue to show 4 cdOM without/with stop, they play 2NT+3cue as 4OM without stop and 2NT+3NT as 4OM with stop. This is what happened in your auction and which surprised me, that Lia played. I wanted to know if that was the common way of playing Lebensohl these days.
Bebop Pete! Such fun to do this challenge as well as see all you top guys play against each other. Thanks!
It's amazing to see you on the other side too, challenging other celebrities!
Thanks, Pete! ❤
Thanks!
