- Welcome to another railfanning adventure, chronicling the operation of the TITAN-Union Pacific's world-famous Big Boy locomotive, Number 4014!
Prior to the UP Steam Program's single trip for the year of 2023, the crew took 4014 to the mainline to both turn the locomotive and support cars, as well as to test out numerous functions that were both altered and added to the locomotive during the previous winter. This included the test of a new multiple-Unit (MU) controller setup, which allows the engineer of the steam locomotive to control the train's diesel helper.
Watch here as the locomotive is worked HARD up Union Pacific's Sherman Hill to Borie, beneath that relentless Wyoming wind. From there, the train shoves East up the Borie cut-off to Speer, where the train backs onto Union Pacific's Greeley Subdivision to Denver. The train then proceeds Forward down Track 3, arriving back to Cheyenne to complete a successful test. Another special trip for UP 4014 is only a couple of days away! Rate. Comment. Subscribe. Yessss, was hoping someone went up to Borie for this. Nice capture of the stack hood testing @ 2:23.
Thx Nick I appreciate all the Up Steam videos you did over the years and now the up 4014 I appreciate it keep the videos up🚂🚃🚃🚋🚃🚃🚃
Good to see Big Boy again, and a big thank you to all the people that help to keep it running.
Seeing Big Boy always brightens my day! Hopefully UP will send this magnificent engine for a West Coast tour soon! Gracias Nick🚂🚂🚂
That is absolutely amazing!! Hope to catch a steamer one day in person
I have never seen the smoke stack get covered befor. That was kool
WOW! He sure is nice and shiny! Good to have a video from you, Nick.
Fantastic Film 🎥
She's back. At least one thing to smile about. Her whistle still gives me shivers. Have they published their summer schedule? So far they've ignored Seattle. We do have UP operations here you know.
The West Coast tour is still postponed.
Super video. U.P. needs to run #4014 more often.
Hello Nick . Good to see you back . Hope you're keeping well , it looked pretty gusty but l guess at least hopefully it was warm ! Some of your video's of the past certainly made me shivver ! I assume this magnificent beast has been asleep for the autumn? Thanks Nick .
Yeah Big Boy is back and with „her“ whistle again 😍
Сьемки отличные💯💥
Hopefully once everything is sorted out the West Coast tour will return.
That really is a thing of beauty.
well I have to say, this is cool. After meeting a bunch of you at the steam shop, watching brings on a new reason to watch, met him, met him, saw him, hey where is the dog ?
Great video and nice catches
Передайте машинистам этого замечательного паровоза мои 1000 лайков❤
What an amazing machine. I have always wanted to see Big Boy run up Saluda Grade, but that is now being sold and will never re-open. Oh well.
Big Boys were not designed for sustained grades over 2.2% anyway, so even if Saluda was still an active rail line, your scenario would never have happened.

At 2:37, something popped up just aft of the smoke stack. What is that? Thanks.
stack hood
Do these drivers have to be specially trained to drive this beautiful Big Boy
Yes. Running steam as an engineer is a lot more complicated than a diesel. I run a steamer and diesel at the RR I work at and they very different
Конечно, это сложный паровоз, зато он самый лучший❤❤❤
Just like a eye lid closing
Awesome! Also will this engine be passing through Utah anytime soon?
4014 already did in 2019
@@UnionPacificRailfan2018 I know and I missed it but I heard somewhere it might be doing West Coast Tour again.
We dont know when they're gonna do the west coast excursion
Looks like she got a bit of a face lift over the winter.
Ok, but what about 844???
Why does this train take diesel locomotive?
PTC and dynamic braking
4014 actually has PTC onboard
@@jaredkelly930 They have a repeater monitor installed in the cab of 4014 that allows the engineer to see it, but the electronics and digital transponder are in the diesel locomotive. The diesel has air conditioning, and electronics do not tend to like the heat from the firebox.
