    The guy who plays El Guapo is Alfonso Arau. He was and is a popular mexican director and producer of arthouse films who obviously had a plethora of fun with his role.

      I used to wake up early and pop this in the VCR when my parents were sleeping. This and Austin Powers. Got caught after the school called my parents because I kept quoting the movies. 20 years later and I still love my stupid comedies and quote them waaay too much, especially The Three Amigos.

    My favorite part of this movie is they allowed the villains to be funny too. They're sometimes funnier then the leads. Everyone gets moments to be funny. Jefe and El Guapo in particular are scene stealers.

      The "PLETHORA!" scenes Joe showed alone show that. El Guapo's actor (who's also a Mexican director if I'm not mistaken) is a funny guy (am I confusing him or wasn't he also the Colombian jungle bandit chief in "Romancing the Stone"?).

      @vitorafmonteiro he was in romancing the stone. I also love the one guy who is so offended at being called a scum sucking pig. Or just the way Jefe says "Yes El Guapo!" When he yells about gringos falling from the sky

    One of the most underrated lines was when they were first having dinner with Carmen's family, and her Mom gushed over them.

    This film is a perfect example of all you really need for a good comedy.
    Good comedy writers and good comedic actors. You don't need a lot of money, extensive sets, effects.... Good writing well delivered.

    I watched this once a week in college in the early 90s. What I liked was when the bandidos first show up in town, and the Amigos remark among themselves how stereotypical they are, which is very meta, and then they break that with El Guapo having a photography hobby, being vulnerable about his age with Jefe, and truly being touched about getting a sweater for his birthday, even automatically wrapping it around his neck.

    "Three Amigos is one of the most original comedies of the 1980s."

    • @vitorafmonteiro
      @vitorafmonteiro 10 місяців тому +7

      I mean, it's much farther from the original concept than "Seven Samurai" and "The Magnificent Seven" are to each other. The number of main heroes is different and there's the whole "fake hero" thing that changes the whole dynamic. If anything the Amigos films in universe seem to be way more like Magnificent Seven than "Three Amigos" is. And then we have stuff like "A Bug's Life" which is kinda "Three Amigos" via going back a bit more back to "Seven Samurai"/"The Magnificent Seven".

  • @NicoAnimation
    @NicoAnimation 10 місяців тому +4

    I grew up loving this movie, my family and I wore the VHS tape out from so many viewings. And while seeing all this deleted material would be cool, it was good to cut them. We get that the Amigos are rich and famous actors, we don't need to SEE so many scenes of them being rich and famous. And while the Miss Rene subplot sounds fun, cutting her completely just simplifies things. It'd feel WAY too bloated if the Amigos reach Mexico at 40min, compared to the final film's 20-min mark!

    How I was teased for liking this movie when it came out, I think it went over most people's heads. It was te era of raunchy Eddie Murphy, where things would culminate in Andrew 'Dice' Clay and eventually subside back to more slap stick with the Naked Gun trilogy.
    There is a little known show called Vids with this hilarious Welsh guy who would give very long, verbally acrobatic descriptions on movies, there was one point where he says something like ''...back when you got stoned one Sunday afternoon and came away thinking The Three Amigos was a good movie...'', I hadn't even ever smoked a joint at the time it was released, but I do admit it helped on re-watching it a few years later....Some very clever scenes though that don't get enough credit....the shooting the singing swordsman still sits with me, and the 'I'll come back one day!',' Why?' at the end is just classic Steve Martin. Anyone seen Lonely Guy? Underrated movie.

    Some might even wonder if possibly The Donald Duck Disney cartoon with the Parrot in Spain and the Rooster in Mexico might have been a partial inspiration for this movie?

    My dad recorded this off the TV when I was a kid, we watched it every day. It's one of the few movies where I know all the lines. As a kid, I never questioned the story, it all made sense. As an adult, I remember bits like the singing bush and summoning the invisible swordsman and I think, who's high fever dream was all this???

    Such a hugely seminal comedy.... (I also wonder if the opening musical number, where they hold that note for a ridiculously long time, influenced Weird Al Yankovic's opening musical number in Spy Hard, where he holds a note for a similarly long time, climaxing in a head explosion.)

    yeah it's the usual kind of cuts you can expect, if it's a plot thread that's not paid off at the end but takes up time in the beginning cut it all out so we can get on with this movie and get to the 2nd act. It lets the audience settle into these characters and their world but I guess they were worried about the audience getting restless.

    3:30 That script was so godlike put together that I completely missed "Cocaine" at first glance and even when it was said I was like "but wait, something has to be in there or it wouldn't be written in the first place".
    Not even a double take made me see it.

      There were a lot of wild patent medicines before they changed the drug laws. You could look up "One Night Cough Syrup" made of cocaine, morphine, cannabis, and chloroform dissolved in alcohol. I bet that stuff would stop you coughing, in fact enough of it might stop you breathing entirely.

    Went to a screening in LA years ago with John Landis in attendance. He said the funniest parts of the movie were between Alfonso Arau and Tony Plana, and that they cut a lot of those interactions out at the direction of Steve Martin. 🤷🏻‍♂️

    I can't say that I'm sad to not see anything involving Sam Kinison. He came from a time when performers could have a strange vocal pitch as their theme, like shouting for no reason, or talking in obscure voices like Gilbert Gottfried or Bobcat Goldthwait or even Carol Kane. It was annoying to my ears then and it would be annoying to my ears today, should that unnecessary footage ever be found.
