I built an modest gaming PC using an Optiplex 7010 SFF and an RTX A2000 after watching you guys build something similar (so it's your fault). Seriously though, it runs great and is able to play games from my Steam library nicely with that card, 16GB RAM, and a 500GB SSD.
Those pcs are fine if you do what you need to them. You can get a converter (Or make one) that allows you to plug a standard power supply into them. Once you have done that running a regular graphics card in them (as long as it fits) is perfectly fine.
I will say that I've brought from that seller before and he gave me some good deals and saw some good deals from his listings like i7, 16GB without hard drive. Also I'm still using the Dell optiplex from him and maxed out upgrades from MT tower. Other one is a SFF/Slim tower and might need to try out a better low profile graphic card for it. One thing I love about those dell optiplex is room for upgrades and can score one for a good price.
Sata can only provide 54 watts I believe, molex can handle much more, like 70s to mid 100s I think. The rx580 draws up to 185 watts and the gtx960 only pulls 120 max.
Both SATA and Molex are rated for 54W watts, better option would be to use 2x SATA to PCI-e which can provide enough power to gpu if you have enough power left on 12V PSU rails. These guys are idiots ngl, they used GPU with 185W TDP with single SATA to pci-e (which can only provide 54W) and to top it off, PSU was probably 250-300W max
nothing can beat my budget pc, i bought somones old hp workstation with a ryzen 7 5700g for 60 dollars, including 16gb of ddr4, a t tb m.2, then i bought an asus b450m-a2 from fb for about 30 dollars, an ancient rx 500xt power supply, and my 80 dollar aisurix rx 580 2048 sp for 88 dollars. i play 1440p either low to medium or medium to high settings.
In Jan 2020 I got a Ryzen 3600 16gb ddr4 B-450MB combo, a 500gb sabrent M.2, a 750w bronze PSU, a tempered glass case, and a Radeon 5700xt all for under £400 new, and less than a few months later the same GPU was worth more than all of it nearly.
love that you tried. I'm guessing the solution would be to try to find an OEM power supply upgrade (or one that fits with a bit of a modification to the tower) or like you said use a low profile graphics card
