I remember my grandma having a Ronco travel mug in the 70s I LOVE LOVE LOVE, LOVE LOVE LOVE, LOVE LOVE LOVED that mug as a child. Brings back a lot of memories. Thanks for sharing James. Oh and loved your look back in the 70s 👍🏻👍🏻 you should do this more in your videos 👍🏻👍🏻
OK< so Google Translate, does translate it as Snore with you, BUT if you don't capitalize the R in Ronco, then it becomes "hoarse with you",,,,, can anyone explain
Oh wow. My family had that orange Ronco cup at their house when I was growing up. I was born in 1975, but my family never threw anything away! So they still had it years later when I was a kid. I used it as a child it worked fine for cold stuff, not well on hot stuff. All cups held less back then because large beverage size was smaller that’s all.
I just discovered this channel yesterday, and have been watching for hours. Great stuff! I love watching these reviews of things I'm never going to buy. I would like to say, after reading the comments on several things, that I actually LIKE that you test things sitting down. A lot of comments will say things, such as, "You're supposed to stand when you're mashing potatoes" or "Who sits to scoop ice cream?" As a disabled person, I sit down a lot when cooking, and my sister sits down even more. So, it's good to see if a thing works, or not, when sitting. May I suggest, for future episodes, you do a dual approach, testing them standing and sitting, so you can compare, and you can also show whether or not the product will work well for disabled people who would be more likely to use it in a sitting position. I know I would be glad of that information. And it's good to know whether a product works, as advertised, but not for you, or maybe it would be a great gift for Aunt Mary, but not for Aunt Esther, because it has to be used standing. This is all good and useful information. I love your humor, and I love when you get your kids involved, too. It seems like you have a great family! And Bailey is adorable!
I’m impressed that it held up to the spill test, honestly. I wouldn’t have been surprised if the spring mechanism had degraded somewhat in 40+ years. Too bad Ronco didn’t team up with Thermos back then, that would have been much more effective!
I was just talking to someone about how we didn't used to always have a drink in our hands. I always left the house without a drink until like sometime in the 90's. Now I have some many drink conveyances, it's ridiculous.
Apples and oranges this time, James! There's still a lot of plastic insulated mugs, most gas stations sell them for refilling. And there were metal thermoses decades ago (and they work fantastic, even the vintage ones.)
I do. I have a bad habit of not finishing my coffee because it's too hot and I wait for it to cool. By that time I'm into my work and can't stop to drink my drink so I finish it later. NOTHING wrong with that or that test thank you very much...
imagine how nasty that coffee get's sitting around that long, there is a reason coffee shops don't let their coffee sit in the pot more then half an hour.
I have the contigo, great for coffee especially. Keep em hot or cold for HOURS. I literally have to take the lid off my coffee for it to cool enough to drink. It is EXTREMELY good as insulation
When I first saw the 1977 James. He reminds me of a cartoonish jumping spider. Then at the end with the light reflecting off his sunglasses he morphed into a muppet.
Personally I've always felt metal insulated containers are vastly superior to plastic. I'd be interested in seeing how the 1977 one compared to a modern plastic one. I love this type of review!
No idea why you would have bought a plastic one like that in 1977 when regular thermos mug has been around since at least 1930's. Probably plastic was still so space futuristic to some people.
I enjoyed the trip back in time to my childhood, watching Ronco commercials on our old CRT tv that only received 3 channels, but it was sacrilege opening that time capsule. Total sacrilege. Thanks!!! Enjoyed this video. Subbed.
That was a brilliant video James. You never ever fail to amaze me. I love your approach your humour and your thoroughness. Never change who you are because if you did UA-cam would be a duller place without you.
I miss the Ronco products tbh. My family only ever bought the Ronco rotisserie (at one point I think we had 4 at the same time both white and black) but I loved watching both the rotisserie and knives infomercials. We still have one left that we use all the time.
Love your channel James!! The ol Roncommercials come to mind...!! Mr. Popeil is a genious! I remember this lil gadget as a kid. I was born in 76 so...lol..they were around a few years later in my families life...i remember them working QUITE WELL..as a kid. Good shit. Love your channel bro!!!
I would have to imagine that, in the 70s, licking the inside of the cup for that very last drop probably didn't seem unusual or gross. We've come a long way, baby! lol
I mean drinking out of cans nowadays you end up with the same problem. Less tone sure, but the same issue. The solution is to either lick or slurp it... or get a cup that is well designed
I have a 12 dollar Contigo (no spring loaded lid on mine) from Walgreens that I use everyday for hot tea. Never spills and keeps my drink hot. I just throw it in my bag without worry. It's great.
I like how the Ronco Auto cup says to not press the button until it's up to your face(to not spill i assume), while the contigo specifically says to press it away to release pressure first, and then when you try the Ronco in your car, pressure is released when you open it.
Fun review. Did notice a small dent at the lower seal of the contigo. I had one and dropped it off the back of my Jeep. After it dented at that point it lost its insulation ability. My new contigo will keep ice for 2 days.
Contigo tends to make wonderful products. I use a stainless steel insulated waterbottle by them that keeps everything inside warm or cold depending on the temp. They're also super solid :)
I like the bright color of the '77 Ronco cup. Stands out visually, less likely to be misplaced or accidentally left behind. And there's nothing wrong with adding a little flashy color to one's life. Most products made today are in drab-looking gray or black, as if they are intended for taking along to funerals... like the 2019 Contigo cup here.
Lol.. love your sense of humor. I’m still curious to know how long the Ronco keeps liquids hot & cold, compared to say, just a regular coffee mug, or a glass.
Probably a little better. From the looks of it, it probably two layers of plastic with an air gap in the middle. Air being a worse conductor than the plastic, you get moderate insulation. It’s no match for the modern insulated mug though, which has a vacuum between the two layers.
I assume the Contigo, being metal, is vacuum sealed, while the Ronco, being plastic, is either air pocket sealed or Styrofoam packed. Loved the "flashback" humor! LOL Thanks.
To be fair, sometimes a totally insulated thermos cup doesn't allow your tea or coffee to cool enough actually enjoy it. Really impressed by the ice test on the new one, but definitely would say Ronco is just a decent travel cup that helps prevent spilling. I would be interesting to at what point the hot and cold wore off, since it seems like both tests came back at a point where Ronco already had given way.
Perhaps the most impressive part is that the rubber band was still intact holding that paper to the cup! Also: curious to know where the products were manufactured. Groovy.
I have a two year old Contigo. It’s exceptional at keeping liquids cool or hot. Have to get the correct ones though. There are some Contigo’s only for cold liquids
Back in the day there really wasn't any competition. Travel mugs didn't really exist. The fact that they held things warm or cold for a couple hours was fantastic. Now that couple of hours is nothing.
Also, sorry to double up a comment, but rewatching and just noticed, the warranty cards go to South Britain, Connecticut, haha... that's literally like 20 minutes away from me, and it's officially now just called Southbury, or the South Britain Historical District of Southbury. Pretty cool stuff.
I had a Contigo like that a few years ago. It wasn't too bad, but the mechanism inside was really hard to clean, and after about a year, the trigger broke. I like that the Ronco mechanism is on the outside.
They are a pita to keep clean and they grow mold under the "trigger" thing so you have to use a dental type pick to scrape under it when washing. Toothbrush works well for cleaning inside the lid. It's more difficult to clean if you use creamer which I do.
There's another con that wasn't mentioned, about the Ronco. The protruding spring loaded seal release mechanism would be more prone to being accidentally pressed if you threw it in a gym bag while full of liquid, leading to a big mess, while the more flush design of the Contigo's button, wouldn't be.
I have 2 Contigo cups, one for my morning coffee and the other is for my ice water which is pretty much all I drink. I can put ice in my water cup and at the end of the day there's still ice in it. Both the lids have never failed or ever leaked. By the way, my dad had one of those cups when we were kids
this proves how technology has advanced even in something as mundane as travel mugs. Back in the day, the idea of having a vacuum layer between the inside and outside surfaces probably wasn't even thought of or possible to affordable mass produce. I'd give the Ronco cup extra credit for the fact of the seals holding up after all these years. ;-)
I just bought one. I gotta have it just for the looks.
Speaks for the quality!
or that fact that the spring still actually has spring in it. that's pretty amazing.
Being wrapped in plastic it probably didn't have a lot of fresh oxygen to oxidize stuff.

I'm searching right now for 1977 ice cubes
Technically as the water is finite you are probably drinking 1977 water..ice etc
You could use an ice tray from 1977...
You can easily tell '77 icecubes man... they're SQUARE!!!

Just when I thought James couldn’t get any cooler...he plays the guitar 💕😎

It's amazing how far thermal heating/cooling tech has come in 43 years.
The most impressive thing here is that the rubber band holding the instructions on the travel mug, was still good!
I was twelve in 1977. It’s hilarious to see something so far in the past! Thank you!
I guess you forgot about Thermos's. They were around in 1977 and far better than the Popiel Auto Cup.
I miss the Ronco products tbh. My family only ever bought the Ronco rotisserie (at one point I think we had 4 at the same time both white and black) but I loved watching both the rotisserie and knives infomercials. We still have one left that we use all the time.
