Let's see, all men in North Korea have to serve at least 10 years of mandatory conscription. That is a ridiculous service time. (There is selective conscription for women so it is unlikely one would have to serve). The situation in North Korea is terrible for all ordinary citizens

Most who defect know it's a better life outside of North Korea but have a hard time adjusting to the hard core competitiveness of South Korea and being uneducated, looking like a country bumpkin and finding it difficult to fit in with western society. Most testimonials I've seen on defectors say they were likely happier in NK.

Korean friends and have learned how incredibly competitive it is in the areas of education and jobs, as well as socially). A friend committed suicide once she left the U.S. to return to S. Korea, after completing university in the U.S. Returning to the competitive environment wore her body, mind, and spirit down. S. Korea is in the top 10 countries with the highest suicide rates (according to the WHO). They tend to adjust much better and are happier when immigrating to Western Europe, the U.S., or Canada, where, yes, they may have to learn a new language and adjust to a very different culture, but the competitiveness and pressures are generally lower, leading to better mental health.

The patriarchal man says "The fact that you work outside the home does not excuse you from any domestic duties. You are not allowed to relax when you come home after work. The first thing I will always ask you when you get home after a long day's work is what you will be cooking for dinner. I will tell you that the most important part of the evening is that I am impatient for a freshly cooked evening meal. Hurry up and start cooking now!!!"

I've spent a couple of years in South Korea and know a little bit about North Korea. Trying to place blame on the men of North Korea is asking them to destroy what little life they have, either through imprisonment or worse. You have no idea what you are talking about and your statement is an example of modern people thinking they know so much. That regime is worse than the Nazi's. Yes, life in North Korea is probably worth less than anywhere else in the world, it doesn't matter which sex you are. It is an extremely brutal regime that was even a little worse (just opinion)under Kim Jung Il. Hopefully more awareness will help bring the changes that the people have been hoping for for such a long time. I really loved this video Yeonmi, I think it helps demonstrate to some of the younger Western generations, myself included, the importance of the women's rights movement in each country or region. Some people may not see the significance that each method of control has over women, especially restricting freedom of movement and travel under the guise of maintaining a feminine appearance or nature. I would love another video on the importance of freedom of travel and movement as a global human right. I think many people in the west do not realize that in restricted places like NK and China that you do not have the freedom to travel freely from region to region and you certainly do not have the freedom to move from region to region to see a better life or employment or school opportunities. I am so strongly hoping in my lifetime that freedom of movement and travel is declared a global human right and we start to hold countries who do not value this right accountable for each and every denial of basic human rights.

Yeonmi explains this thing in her vlogs. In North Korea communist regime, there is no such a thing, they must marry their rapist. Im not sure what if woman gets raped by arleady married man, I'm sure i read somewhere that both will get sended to prison camp. But I'm not sure, must ask Yeonmi on her live.
