I flare my tubes with a field point/arrowhead. The little hammer worked great.... And my Tramontina just showed up in the mail as I was typing this. Awesome.

@@charlesartificer2158 I have to admit that I was a little underwhelmed at first, but after a weekend of customizing the blade and handle, I am in love with this thing! Not easy work without a vice or clamps.

@@Danielson1818 just wait until you use it. You'll be surprised at how well it works. But I hear you you know at first blush it doesn't appear to be much. But for the money it's really hard to Beat It. Thanks for the view and the comments, have a great day.

Years back when I first began modifying my grips, I used ranger bands and liked them. I applied them to a couple of Chinese made Cold Steel machetes. That should give a rough idea of the time frame. However, in time they lost favour as UV light adversely affected them. It will take time but it will happen. I still have knives with friction tape after many years. But the newer tape leaves a black sticky deposit on hands, so that has lost favour. Wilson tennis racket tape is a favourite of many on our forum. I use rescue tape these days. For the most part with wood grips, I sand to suit and then apply a wood oil for protection. .

I did similar mods with the tung oil and ranger bands. But eventhough I do woodwork and like customizing handles, I saw no need to reprofile it. I just put the bands on and it covers all the hot spots. Its a tram so you're talking about a flimsy piece of flexible metal sandwiched by cheap wood slabs. If I want to get fancy I'd invest my time in something higher quality.

It fits my hand much better reprofiled, but to each their own. As for being cheap and flimsy, I disagree. Have purchased many so called high quality machetes over my life and in the end when they break on me I was always left with two things. Feeling like I was robbed and an empty wallet. For the price these tamontinas cannot be beat and if I do somehow break it I am only out a small amount of money. But to each there own. Thanks for the comment.

Where are you guys finding these with sheaths? Everywhere I go they come without sheaths then I have to hunt around for something aftermarket.

@bangdingow1414 I purchased it at lowes. But in 3 different hardware stores in my area I have seen machetes with sheaths for sale.

There's a big difference in inexpensive that performs adequately and cheap. Cheap is improperly heat treated or not at all 😂 and the list goes on. That's what is great for me about this cutting tool and the Cold Steel medium carbon thinner machetes that are/were made in South Africa for them. Les Stroud used the "Heavy " version (square nose) in his Survivorman show. They were inexpensive, easy to sharpen and hone and tough as hell. But that handle on that thing? OMG..its horrible for me and I have big hands and long fingers. So you take that hard polypropylene off there. This is NOT fun. Also that stuff, if you lay your machete down with the handle fairly close to your fire, the handle won't melt or warp, but your hand WILL😂
