I guess I’ll be heading to my local Ollie’s to get one and then after reading, I’ll treat myself to a Swiss Army knife purchase for Xmas. Thank you for a well rounded and informative book review.

      @@1217mikegrs I assume what you're asking is flame directly on the meat. Yes if you were to do that it will absorb any fumes possibly making it poisonous. I wouldn't cook any meat directly over a flame on any kind of camping stove it's not a good idea. The only thing I would cook meat directly over flame is a campfire. Everything else should be cooked in a fry pan or other container. Hope this answers your question have a great day

    I have my old brass Svea from back in the early ‘70s. I like the stainless steel copy too. Seems like the silent head is not silent and doesn’t heat up to enough BTUs. Maybe the silent head is just for warming. Seems like electrolytic corrosion is a thing. Wonder how they avoid this? The sharp edges might cause a cut finger. A little round file is the solution. Is a pressure relief valve needed? Thank you for this demonstration and commentary…from an old vet, retired in the foothills of the Smokies.

    I can see how this makes for a decent emergency/field sharpener, but did you really ditch real whetstones for this? Doesnt seem like a good fit for kitchen knives or pocket knives with better steels in them

    • @charlesartificer2158
      @charlesartificer2158 24 дні тому

      @kvernesdotten I did not ditch my stones for this. What this has allowed me to do is leave them at home. I take a carbide sharpener with me into the woods. while out if I need to sharpen up a blade This makes quick work of it. when back at home if said blade needs it I finish it with a stone. As for other blade steels to date every blade steel I have tried it on from pocket knife to kitchen knife it has worked. This is a useful tool for putting a quick edge on a blade. If you take the time to learn it and master it you will see its benefits. Besides if you have a steel harder than carbide how the hell you going to sharpen it in the first place? Hope this answer your question.

    • @kvernesdotten
      @kvernesdotten 23 дні тому

      @@charlesartificer2158 Oh okay, it came across as you having used traditional stones for decades then exclusively moved to these. I still dont think kitchen knives make much sense though, since they spend their time in your house where they can be properly sharpened anyway so it doesnt make much sense to me at least to put an emergency micro bevel on them. But yeah if you use these in the woods as you say and still sharpen properly at home that makes alot more sense. There are no steel that is harder than tungsten carbide. There are steels with vanadium carbides scattered in them that are as hard, but the steel itself cannot be. Some people are very concerned with carbide tearout and such in these steels, I dont necessarily think its as big of an issue as they claim but I also have no idea how that interacts with scraping the steel with a carbide bit as oposed to abrading it traditionally, so maybe its a thing? Anyway the point is that even the hardest supersteels will sharpen eventually if you go at it long enough with enough friction, im personally more worried about putting microbevels and weird facets on nicer knives if its not necessary if that makes sense I havent tried this exact one, but ive tried something similar and found that it gives about the same result as a ceramic honing rod (with actual abrasives in it)

    • @charlesartificer2158
      @charlesartificer2158 23 дні тому

      @kvernesdotten I used it on kitchen knives during my initial evaluation. Then another time when I was at a friends house. Turns out his kids lost his main wet stone. I had one of these carbide sharpers in my bag in my truck. Works well for a quick sharpen. With alot of Practice you can keep odd bevels to a minimum. Where these sharpers are concerned there is alot of hand wringing and people worrying about things that honestly are nonsense. At the end of the day is the blade sharp or not. That all comes down to the skill of the user. I knew an older guy who used ceramic rods and could put a razor edge on a blade super fast. But he had been doing it for decades. Now that I have a few years using these I can whip out a nice sharp edge much quicker than with my Arkansas whetstone. Granted its a softer stone but it has been my goto for most of my life. Plus, with the handle cut down, this is smaller and lighter. Best advice I give people on these is to get some inexpensive knives and practice, practice, practice. Remember that learning curve you had using a stone? Same thing here takes time and patience. Sad truth is most people lack both these days. They want instant gratification. Well I have rambled long enough I hope you are picking up what Im laying down. Got to go to work now. Have a good one.

      It might not need to be sharpened. all depends on usage. Been taking this one to work daily and I like it so much getting a second one for my other mess kit.

    Solves the "can't use that lubricant " because I eat with my knife issue too. Weighs an ounce. Now you can use bear grease on your belt knife or whatever and not worry about poisoning yourself...ever😂

      True, unless you use your field knife to dress out wild game. Then you could be right back to food contamination.

    If I was using this in a real world setting I would put the base in standing water after it gets hot to preheat the water.

    Cool tip ! Might want to rub it on a few drops of cooking oil to increase burn time ! Love the Kira outro 😅

    • @charlesartificer2158
      @charlesartificer2158 Місяць тому

      @ARAW-__- That could work. Only issue is with over time the oil going rancid and attracting wildlife like bears. Jute twine is oil treated that's what makes it so flammable. Maybe some gun oil, will have to try some experiments. I'm glad you like her outro, working on some new ones. Thanks for the idea have a great day.

      @charlesartificer2158 Bear country is just different ! There are some wolves and brown bears in France, but they absolutely decimated not that long ago, so they fear humans and learned to eat only sheeps and the likes.

    Did you try to push in the center like Tupperware, to see if it would seal better?

    • @charlesartificer2158
      @charlesartificer2158 Місяць тому

      @markraciborski4289 I have and it still leaks. I have a buddy who has one and he got his to seal one time and has not been abel to reproduce the result. So I suppose it can work under perfect conditions. Life however is seldom perfect. Best advice I can give is only use the top to cover your food from bugs if you must get up to do something but do not try and turn it sideways with any liquid in it. Other than that I do like this mess kit. Thanks for the comment and views.

    The tape will extend the burn time of the jute. And strips of jute inside of rolled tape will provide the best of both. Peace

    Greetings from Denmark ( Europe ) I have 10 pcs of septer 20 liters and 2 pcs 10 liter water cans, and I would recommend them 100%, they are made in really super quality, they are really quality and worth the price 100%. I also have and use 20 liter septer NATO military fuel jerrycans, I would also recommend them, they are absolutely the best plastic jerrycans on the world market, and not expensive if you look at the quality you get for your money. If you need a fuel 5 gallon jerrycan made of steel, Valpro / Wavian, which I have 33 pc, are the absolute only ones that work and clearly the only ones you should go for, forget all other cheaper alternatives, you will only be disappointed, and leave with a feeling that you have thrown your money away And buy them flexible spout made of metal from Valpro / Wavian it is fantastic and durable.
