I'm totally freaked out over pirates and boat security while in a harbor. Most countries seem to be intent on removing your ability to protect your selves and your boat. Any experiences in this area? Or advice?
My buddy call me yesterday when I was drunk told me to buy a sailboat all the way across Canada so I did today I quit my job got a plane ticket never seen the sailboat only on FaceTime it looks nice for a 1969 it in the water and not at the bottom good enough I don’t even know how to sail but I’m so excited to go out there and start a new life on the sea

I have been living on a narrowboat alone for six months, that statement of the real journey is in your mind rings so true having anxiety and depression myself. I am in a better place now mentally but the underlying issues are not addressed by being on the boat alone but I have given myself more time to deal with and be in control of my head space. One of the most honest, thoughtful and informative videos on the real life of boat life. There is also the endless maintenance, the time spent on visas, etc. Many people now watch a UA-cam channel, see a few hours touting the great things about boat life, and they don't know the reality until they're well into the stresses. If they are aware of the things you talked about, and they have plans for how to deal with these problems, sailing/boating is incredible. And not everyone needs to sail around the world. Just having a boat at a marina for a few years while learning to sail/motor, venturing further and further away can be a totally fulfilling lifestyle of boating. That eliminates many of the problems, but takes away much of the adventure/discover of new lands. Everything is a choice. Thanks for these beautiful, literary videos!

Dear Maya, as I would put it in a proper letter... WOW! This is, by far, the most honest, truthful and down-to-earth reflection on sailing I've ever heard. The deepest reflection, in fact, I've ever heard from a sailor. Keep on your fantastic work!
All that you have related is very true, you must have put a lot of thought into this vid. Currently I own a 43' cruising cat, and for the last 8 years I've been cruising in the Caribbean for 3 months of the year, and working the other 9, so I can kind of relate. One of my biggest problems is budget... invariably something always comes up that blows the plan out of the water, and I tend to spend more than average on berthing, hotels, dining at restaurants, and paying to have some of the drudgery work done. When the weather is nice with a fair wind from the right direction, and everything on the boat is turnkey, I can't think of a better way to spend my time, and I contemplate putting the house up for rent and cruising full time, however sometimes there are those days when I feel perhaps I should have my head examined.
Sell the house & get a 100 ft sailboat. Hire a crew of 4 that ask nothing less than 7 bananas a day each. Oh ya a hot tub on board for those tired muscles.

I'm 3 years in as a liveaboard, and a lot of the information you've presented here resonates. So far, my longest trips have only been up to a month, but hopefully next year it will be more like 5 or 6 months in the year, and work the rest, maybe in a different place to over-winter than usual. And, as stated, you can’t run away from your demons. Reminds me of a wonderful book on meditation called “Wherever You Go, There You Are” - with the key point in the title!

This might be the first youtube video I've commented on, but after getting a small 50 year old sailboat for free recently, and fixing her up to cruise my local waters, I've been having a lot of thoughts about living onboard (a larger boat). Not only has this video made me feel like I might be making the right choice by wanting to live onboard, but it's also put my working life into perspective too. I've spent the last 6 years sailing cruise ships as a junior deck officer, and the constant stress and anxiety used to really bother me. Your description of your own experiences has helped me to understand the feelings that I've had throughout my career so far. So thank you. For two reasons.
Great video! My biggest problem is finding someone to sail with. I think those who find a partner or a friend to share the adventure has gotten really lucky. Most people would never give up shopping, netflix and a boring job for a chance to see the world from a boat.

With so many sailing channels out there now, competition is huge. If you want to grow and have many subs (over 100K) you actually have to be good at something other than sailing AND good at making videos. You need a mission (as opposed to being an influencer, doing ads). What I like about this channel is that it is destination-focused and Maya's musical accompaniments are something unique that brings a lot to the channel. If this channel featured a million dollar cat, videos about boat maintenance and a family soap, I would not watch. Here instead we have modest boat, excellent narration (I love the background research) and two young talented people following their passion. There is a sense of adventure and delight that lives on.
I started watching your videos when you got your first boat back in Canada. I admire your spirit, and Aladino is a lucky man. In fact, you are two very lucky people, and I wish you both a wonderful life, and lots of happy babies.

I have owned, sailed and raced catamarans, dinghys and small keelers for 30 years. I once did a 3 night 4 day trip from Cape Town to Cape St Frances along the southern coast of South Africa. After a lifetime of dreaming of sailing around the world, my dream died in its tracks right there. I loved the trip, I loved the sailing, the big seas, the rough weather, everything. But I realized there was so much more I wanted to do with my life than watch the horizon drift by at 7 knots, day after day. Well done, Sailing Magic Carpet - a thoughtful and highly relevant piece that does investigate some of the challenges - especially the life challenges, of a life at sea. I still love my sailing, I still love boats, but I am no longer under the illusion that living on one over an extended period would suite my personality type.

Very informative video, thank you for enlightening us. Sailing was and is still my dream since I was a kid. But when I listen my inner voice , my savings are not enough to take that risk. As you say "the real journey does happen in your mind" Excellent video!
This was a truly excellent video but with one exception. You stated that one can never really relax on the water. Some of us never really relax until we are on the water.
Honestly...I would have never expected so much wisdom from a young person and particularly about a specific subjet like the psycology of somebody who lives under such conditions, simply because I thought it needs long years of experience...you earned my respect young lady, just continue to sail on water but still keeping your feet on the ground...I will certainly watch this video many times ...thank you!
Maya, that video was absolutely fantastic. Such honest and great advice. One of the things that would worry me about living on a boat would be security. I would worry someone would break in whilst I was onshore or, worse still, whilst I was in bed. I’m sure that its only as likely as someone breaking into a house, but it would prey on my mind.
Maya, for the most part, I truly believe that wisdom comes from experience, and for that to accumulate, it normally takes time, Talent as opposed to ability I believe a is birth gift rather than a learned endeavor. I have enjoyed all of your videos, to use a cliched phrase you project wisdom beyond your young age, you have obviously learned much along the way, yet I am of the opinion that most of you is the result of birth gifts. Your physical beauty, your soothing voice, and your beautiful music are but a few of those gifts, your outlook on life, and your pleasant demeanor are enticing and captivating. Thank you. I made my choice to stay on the ground 20 years ago. I was naive and romantic that time and seriously considered to live on the boat. Now I have a family, 2 houses, several 7 digits bank accounts and I change my hobbies every year or two. So, being a skipper for a week is just as fun as being a pilot, woodworking or snowboarding. You just confirmed that my choice was right. Thank you million times for that video, it really makes me happy. And good luck on the waters.

Hiya and thank you... What a prevocative and chalenging vlog. This has grabbed me in many ways, it's scared me, comforted me and lifted me all at the same time. Yes I still want to get a boat, the right help and head west into tomorrow every day. Not to run away but to run toward my future... I'm disabled and get sea sick on a puddle so a motor boat rather than a sailing vessel but nothing else changed, a magic carpet indeed!
"Perhaps a different kind of alternative lifestyle..." There are people (not me) who go on a bicycle tour and end up selling their houses and living on the road, circling the globe. Also #vanlife.
I loved that line you said at the end "The boat is not there to make your demons disappear." I imagine that when you are on a boat you are, in fact, trapped with your demons in a very small space. So facing and dealing with them prior to moving on board would probably be wise.
I am an expat myself and find it really important to spend time with family and long term friends even if it may cost a lot of time and money. Then there is always someone to hold you when hard times come. Indeed this part is very personal, I wish you all well :)

I really like the exterior wood on the boat... Random observation off topic sorry. I have to tell you, I don't want to ACTUALLY do what you do for the very reasons you site. Having said that, I watch several channels like your's because it is a mini vacation! When it is cold and rainy December here in Oregon, I watch videos like yours' on my lunch break at work and daydream about sailing the world. It may not be the actual adventure but you give a little ray of sunshine to get us through the doldrums! At the end of the day I know I am not cut out for what you are doing but your videos are suspension of disbelief, an opportunity to daydream about what could be without suffering the consequences. It may not fill your bank account but know that others live vicariously through channels like yours and it is uplifting.

I have no intention of adopting this lifestyle, I am now getting too old anyway but I do admire coherent thought. As they say "the grass is always greener" and so true that is. I sometimes miss the open horizons of constant travel. Now, however with two 2e children, and a mother with Alzheimers, the suburban life is far easier to manage. My health is also no longer the best, so nearby high quality medical care is not just nice... She was built at a shipyard in Taiwan. She is a beauty. All teak below deck. I believe Hand carvings of bamboo plants on the head and Captains quarter's doors. Wow! Another beautifully made video production. Love the landscape, seascape and natural world (dolphins!) shots. The BEST part of these videos is how you manage to express how you FEEL about your life and sailing. I'm writing this seven months later but I just watched it, so ......
With so many sailing channels out there now, competition is huge. If you want to grow and have many subs (over 100K) you actually have to be good at something other than sailing AND good at making videos. You need a mission (as opposed to being an influencer, doing ads). What I like about this channel is that it is destination-focused and Maya's musical accompaniments are something unique that brings a lot to the channel. If this channel featured a million dollar cat, videos about boat maintenance and a family soap, I would not watch. Here instead we have modest boat, excellent narration (I love the background research) and two young talented people following their passion. There is a sense of adventure and delight that lives on.

I have owned, sailed and raced catamarans, dinghys and small keelers for 30 years. I once did a 3 night 4 day trip from Cape Town to Cape St Frances along the southern coast of South Africa. After a lifetime of dreaming of sailing around the world, my dream died in its tracks right there. I loved the trip, I loved the sailing, the big seas, the rough weather, everything. But I realized there was so much more I wanted to do with my life than watch the horizon drift by at 7 knots, day after day.
Well done, Sailing Magic Carpet - a thoughtful and highly relevant piece that does investigate some of the challenges - especially the life challenges, of a life at sea. I still love my sailing, I still love boats, but I am no longer under the illusion that living on one over an extended period would suite my personality type.
Extraordinary wisdom and maturity in somebody so young. One of the best presentations of the realities of full time sailing and live aboard life that I have seen on You Tube. Well done and keep going - you are and will be such a success! I’m subscribed.

Great advice. It can be a lot more relaxing on someone else’s boat, however there is nothing like getting through anxious moments on your own and reaching somewhere beautiful.

Honestly...I would have never expected so much wisdom from a young person and particularly about a specific subjet like the psycology of somebody who lives under such conditions, simply because I thought it needs long years of experience...you earned my respect young lady, just continue to sail on water but still keeping your feet on the ground...I will certainly watch this video many times ...thank you!
Maya, that video was absolutely fantastic. Such honest and great advice. One of the things that would worry me about living on a boat would be security. I would worry someone would break in whilst I was onshore or, worse still, whilst I was in bed. I’m sure that its only as likely as someone breaking into a house, but it would prey on my mind.

Talent as opposed to ability I believe a is birth gift rather than a learned endeavor.
I have enjoyed all of your videos, to use a cliched phrase you project wisdom beyond your young age, you have obviously learned much along the way, yet I am of the opinion that most of you is the result of birth gifts.
Your physical beauty, your soothing voice, and your beautiful music are but a few of those gifts, your outlook on life, and your pleasant demeanor are enticing and captivating.

Thank you. I made my choice to stay on the ground 20 years ago. I was naive and romantic that time and seriously considered to live on the boat. Now I have a family, 2 houses, several 7 digits bank accounts and I change my hobbies every year or two. So, being a skipper for a week is just as fun as being a pilot, woodworking or snowboarding. You just confirmed that my choice was right. Thank you million times for that video, it really makes me happy. And good luck on the waters.

When will something break, will I be able to fix it. Getting anxious is real. As always you put together an exceptional film.

You did a good job laying out all the issues that most people never consider unless they are in the middle of them. What a prevocative and chalenging vlog. This has grabbed me in many ways, it's scared me, comforted me and lifted me all at the same time. Yes I still want to get a boat, the right help and head west into tomorrow every day. Not to run away but to run toward my future... I'm disabled and get sea sick on a puddle so a motor boat rather than a sailing vessel but nothing else changed, a magic carpet indeed!

I loved that line you said at the end "The boat is not there to make your demons disappear." I imagine that when you are on a boat you are, in fact, trapped with your demons in a very small space. So facing and dealing with them prior to moving on board would probably be wise.
I am an expat myself and find it really important to spend time with family and long term friends even if it may cost a lot of time and money. Then there is always someone to hold you when hard times come. Indeed this part is very personal, I wish you all well :)

I really like the exterior wood on the boat... Random observation off topic sorry. I have to tell you, I don't want to ACTUALLY do what you do for the very reasons you site. Having said that, I watch several channels like your's because it is a mini vacation! When it is cold and rainy December here in Oregon, I watch videos like yours' on my lunch break at work and daydream about sailing the world. It may not be the actual adventure but you give a little ray of sunshine to get us through the doldrums! At the end of the day I know I am not cut out for what you are doing but your videos are suspension of disbelief, an opportunity to daydream about what could be without suffering the consequences. It may not fill your bank account but know that others live vicariously through channels like yours and it is uplifting.
You did an incredible job with this video. It gives great insight into the reality of boat life and some awesome advise for those thinking about becoming a full or part time cruiser. 🖒

Dear Russ, one coherent thought - I used to live aboard because I HAD to due to finances. I am now quite wealthy, and looking for a ship to sail again. I am doing such, so that I do NOT have to worry about mowing any "green grass." To you Sir, I wish a fair wind and a following sea always. Peace
I sometimes miss the open horizons of constant travel. Now, however with two 2e children, and a mother with Alzheimers, the suburban life is far easier to manage. My health is also no longer the best, so nearby high quality medical care is not just nice...
This is an excellent video, any one considering any travel intensive lifestyle, land or sea should watch it. Then watch it again.

"Chop Sticks" ⛵🥢😎. She was built at a shipyard in Taiwan. She is a beauty. All teak below deck. I believe Hand carvings of bamboo plants on the head and Captains quarter's doors. I do a boat tour in episode 3 of my UA-cam channel. Although my story telling leaves much to be desired. I Wish you 2 the best on your current project. She will be a beauty when u are finished. Love watching your channel but i am a bit behind on episodes...
