I couldn't understand why this PC was so cheap... until I looked inside.

  • Sometimes placing a last minute bid on an eBay item doesn't work out entirely how you want it to, and this HP prebuilt is one of those times. I found this PC for £21 / $27 and all seemed well until I took a look inside the case...
    Thanks for watching :)

my biggest mistake was a 700$ GPU nearly 2 decades ago, yes in 2004 there were already close to 1000$ customer/gaming grade graphics cards. Dont think this is a weird flex, I learned my lesson, never bought overpriced crap anymore. Thats why i am not allowed to buy a new PC anymore, CPUs overpriced(yes, also the so loved Ryzens....!), GPUs and RAM heavily overpriced.
Whats finally getting "cheap" are SSDs, especially in 2,5" SATA versions. HDDs i also should boycott, they are so expensive, even if you are only looking for a 2-4TB 3,5"....

You get significant price breaks when buying tons and tons of one design versus 1/3 of three designs, etc. This is called a price break; the more you order of one thing, the cheaper they give each one for. This is because they only have to configure their factory once to make the thing and can just let it run until the order is done, rather than shutting down, reconfiguring, and starting it back up. All of that stuff in between takes time, and factory time is money.
The manufacturer will also have an MOQ, or Minimum Order Quantity. For big custom items like this case, they may have to order 10,000+ just to get the manufacturer to make any at all. To get around this, they'd just have the needed blanking/adapter plates made somewhere else (extremely cheap) and assemble.

Lagged2Death It’s called thin Mini ITX and, while I’m not sure if it was ever an “official” standard, enough companies made enough hardware (Asus has listings for thin mini itx mobos as recent as the H310 chipset) around it for it to be standard enough. I can’t say I’ve seen/heard of any with standard DIMM slots though, most of the ones I’m familiar with use SODIMMs since they mount flat against the board lowering the height (think PCs built into cases similar in size to standalone DVD players) of the overall system even further.

True, i got in end 2016 also a PC for free (from a friend, he said otherwise he throw Mainboard/CPU/Ram away xD)
It was even a i5 4430/H87 Board and i think 8Gb slow Ram. This PC is with my older graphics card, a Radeon HD 6950 2GB still my 2nd, but actually more of a 3rd gaming rig/Multibox PC and didnt use it since over a year.
As much i loved how "fast" the 4430 was compared to my older Phenom II X6, i still shot a cheap i7 4790k in an auction, found out the H87 Board dont like the 4790k (despite the fact it was in supported CPU list and Bios updated) and ended up with Z97 mainboard too and because of "pushing" the system to the limits also the best DDR3 ram aviable, so my 4790k easily beats a 7700k for cheap.

I replaced it with an Optiplex 7010; but I think if you put in a SSD, the I5-3470T and maximum RAM, which I think was 8GB you still get a decent office PC with low power consumption. And of course it runs on Windows 10.

While it was a big case -- looked like full ATX -- it was designed in such a way that you could only put a single slot graphics card less than maybe 6 inches long in it. There was capacitors sticking out just behind the PCIe slot preventing longer cards, and it was outright lacking a PCI bracket knockout that would allow you to do double slot... be careful when buying these prebuilts. Make sure you Google pictures of their insides.

I'd like to try to explain why a computer company does this. In the world of office PCs, your margins and profit are absolutely key. It makes *a lot* more sense if you can produce one PC case that you can use all up and down various price categories, because your margins are much higher on one very flexible PC case vs. the whole design process of several unique cases. In this case, the hardware is likely the cheapest possible configuration available - suitable (for example) sitting under a receptionist or secretary's desk, whose IT needs are extremely basic and so the company wants to buy something as cheap as possible. For this use case, the company selling this makes the best profit because all that's really unique to this PC is the internal guts. Everything else is reused from what they already have and so their profit on each of these sold is good. Hope this is helpful, genuinely.

Oh God, I did a similar thing in the past. I bought a cheap, standard looking desktop with intentions of upgrading it for server-like tasks. Turns out, it was basically a laptop slapped into a desktop case. A single 4 gig SODIMM DDR3L stick, and a SOLDERED Intel Celeron. At least I made use of the ram though, by upgrading my laptop from 4 gigs to 6 gigs.

For future benchmarks with CS:GO: The new anti-cheat Valve has in place makes it (in my experience) difficult to monitor system components using programs that use an external overlay. That being said, you can still enable a frame counter from the Steam settings while using the steam client in order of Steam>Settings>In-Game located in the top left of the client window.

I got an F-Greenwood ITX board with an AMD Kabani dual core APU that's pretty much exactly like that board. It was really only good for a linux box for tweaking & a dedicated KODI machine. Nice score for 8 gigs of ram & a full tower case.

I narrowly avoided buying something very much like this at a PC World store, only with actual laptop SODIMMs and a CPU soldered to the board. It was masquerading as a desktop and it might have fooled me had I not asked a (very helpful) sales assistant to open the side panel for me so I could check for expandability. He was as surprised as I was when we saw what was inside.
There are a lot of these kinds of systems out there, so always do your research even when buying something that's "just for netflix".
Also, you might be surprised at what you can get away with if you just ask nicely.

For the life of me, the only reason I can think that this would exist is because they had to clear stock of micro ATX cases. This tier of hardware doesn't even belong in a small-form-factor. This is micro-desktop / budget laptop tier hardware. HP has always been notorious in my book for cutting corners like this.

I made one of these into a "gaming pc" once.
Lots of dremeling and a bit of drilling. Obviously I swapped out the motherboard for something that actually had an expansion slot, mounted a full size psu, dremeled some vents into the front panel and added an intake fan.
    Specs were:
    Phenom x6 1100t
    8gb ddr3 1333
    Gtx 560ti 2gb
    120gb ssd
    500gb hdd
Performance and temperatures were woeful but it all worked and I had heaps of fun doing it.

One of these came into the shop I used to work in last year and had never come across nor known they'd even existed before hand and I've been a techie for over 25 years. A customer had brought it in and asked what their options were for upgrading it. When I told them it's unable to be upgraded they ended up buying a new system from us instead. They left the machine with us as they had no need for it so I turned it into a retro emulation machine. It ran fairly well for most old retro consoles.

If there’s a mini PCIeX1 slot on the board you might be able to use a mini PCIeX1 to PCIeX16 adapter to use a regular GPU with it. I’ve done this successfully on many ITX boards. Please note I’m not talking about the eGPU adapters for laptops that are rather expensive . The cheap $5-10 adapters work a treat, and you can connect power up to a molex or SATA power plug, too. I’ve found some boards will work with AMD GPUs but not NVidia GPUS or vice versa. Some boards won’t work at all, so you just have to give it a go to see what works.

mesterak Once support for it grows beyond AMD CPUs and GPUs, PCIe 4.0 will create some interesting possibilities here. At 4.0 speeds, the 4 lanes a typical M.2 slot provides has the same amount of bandwidth as 8 lanes of 3.0 or 16 lanes of 2.0, which is more than enough for midrange GPUs. M.2 is also a properly defined standard as well, so you shouldn’t have the same issues you got with MXM.

I own this computer! Pentium G2020T & 4GB RAM. No PCI Express slot. It ran terribly with the stock hard drive & but after an SSD upgrade, it became a lot more capable. Thinking about upgrading the CPU to a 3220T and RAM to 8GB... But it's probably not worth it considering what new hardware is capable of.

Honestly I wouldn't call you an idiot. This is awesome learning experience. You got a great deal regardless like you said. I think being honest and showing viewers both sides of used parts is important. I have seen strange things like a cpu that made pice slots no function. It would only work with one of pice slots for graphics card. You can bring back graphics cards by flash their bios. Used parts are always more interesting and require people like you who have experience with them old or new.

A few weeks ago I wanted to clean a fan in an old HP laptop and it turns out you have to disassemble the entire thing to even get there. I didn't want to take the time, so I used a vacuum cleaner and tried my best. It seems to have worked, at least it's cooler now, but it's still sad HP doesn't care about maintainability. Needless to say, I don't like HP. But I'm not a fan of especially these OEMs in general. They are part of the reason why we have so much e-waste and I despise this mentality.

I picked up a HP S5000 which cost me a little bit more than what you paid for that although not a lot more, It's a Slimline and about half the thickness so as you can imagine it's nowhere near as bulky, Main differences between the one you bought off eBay and My S5000 are that this one has a PCI-E Slot for a Low-Profile Graphics Card and an internal PSU, Another thing I like about the S5000 is that their's a Portable HDD Docking Bay at the front of the machine which can come in handy! 🙂 Biggest issue to me is when PC Manufacturers install bespoke PSU's into their Computers as they cost an Arm and a Leg if you need to replace them unless they use Standard Connectors and Mounting holes etc...

I’m getting rid of it as no one used it, but I did save the hard drive, fan, and DVD player so maybe this purchase wasn’t the worst mistake in the world if you also salvage those. It's not a laptop mobo, it's just one of HP's lowest tier systems. Basically a laptop chipset and socket paired with a standard desktop(but probably extremely restricted) I/O and memory subsystem.
I would just mod the case to take an ATX, or preferably, an SFX PSU, cut out extra holes and vents for fans, and use a cheap ITX/DTX(which the original looks like to me) mobo that you could get the CPU as cheap as possible to suit the socket. 👍

I saw the case and immediately knew. Have an AMD based system that's part of the same line of PCs just sitting in my closet after being retired 3 years ago. Good thing is if you remove the panel for the PSU you can make a micro-atx apu build in that case, which would probably work good as an htpc.

When I come across such things, I usually downgrade to 4GB Ram and sell it as power efficient multimedia/office PC, at least here in Germany some people dig the idea of low power consumption on PCs... meanwhile me using old Dual Xeon Servers and GPU like the GTX 680.
PS: Kinda unrelated, but I recently came across the dumbest Error I've ever encountered. The PC would sometimes restart or lag out during windows installation and I went trough all sort of troubleshooting regarding ram and so on. Guess what the culprit was? The (working) Power LED connected as part of the front panel connector was on it's way out or had some cable damage I didn't notice. I just had to cut the wires and the PC kept working fine (I tested it without the front panel connector).

  • @KenjiTech

yeah, my friend michi got the same PC, and she hated it for always taking forever to do anything.
the shitty CPU is one thing, but having windows 8 pre-installed on a slow 1.5 tb HDD sure did not help speeds at all.
replacing the HDD with an SSD and running a light linux instead of windows would have helped a lot already but we wanted to make that computer be fun to use, not just "ok-ish"
so i ripped the guts out of this case alltogether and drilled out those four riveted bolts that hold the cover for the PSU hole in place.
then i put some A320 mainboard, an athlon 200GE and a proper PSU in there. ... unfortunately this was the last video i did in quite a while ... there was a followup planned but i'm just too busy and it just doesn't stop :-(
the computer is working fine tho ...

Reduce the fan count by removing the CPU fan and fitting a duct from the CPU hs to the case fan (switch fan connector to CPU header), that was standard for quite a few OEM models back in the day, plastic dryer hose spiral duct works nicely.
An alternative is translating the mobo to a SFF case. maybe a novelty one.

If there are any situations where in some games, your frame counter does not work, go to the developer console, type in "cl_showfps 1" or something like that, this is what the command would be for CSGO. There was an update for CSGO that disabled any third party overlay apps, to prevent cheaters from cheating in the game. If you want to have your counters up in your recordings when testing CSGO, type in "-untrusted" in the launch options of the game.

You're not an idiot, you simply had the wool pulled over your eyes just like many other consumers have. Truthfully, in my opinion HP did this on purposely to mislead customers, and the eBay seller must not have done a good job describing what it was as they are hard to sell. HP came out several years ago with a 110 series just like that one, and I will tell you they had a history of burning up, so be aware of this. There was this large marketing sticker on the side that made the specs sound wonderful, just one issue, they never spoke of the cpu or the psu, big shocker there. It really was not even upgrade-able. They are not much better spec wise than a cheap netbook. Thanks for the honest video.
