    Watching some of your other videos it’s impressive how well you create a situation where the last bit of a video is an ad for other videos in a way that is very natural and makes sense.

    I don't even think of buying any of these things, but watching this is just so satisfying. I can't explain it, but the whole EDC thing together with your high video quality makes this just a perfect thing to just watch and dream. It also inspired me to search for cheaper options, which are not always worse

      Tomtoc have some great budget options. Buying second hand online is also a good option if you have a trusty local online auction site.

      Thanks so much for watching! I find that the most expensive stuff is rarely a better product (but MUCH better marketing and positioning). The challenge I have when making product reviews is that everyone’s definition of “reasonable” price ranges is different… at the end of the day, BEFORE price, I find it a lot more valuable for me to determine how often I’ll actually use things. If I truly use things very often, the cost-per-use ends up being very reasonable 🙏

    One thing I would recommend against putting in a tech pouch are things like multitools or torches. While it's nice to have everything together, it's not uncommon to forget all of the gear you have in your pouch, especially if it lives at the bottom of your bag. If you're travelling on airlines, it's a great way to have have your multitool/screwdrivers confiscated. Personally, I prefer keeping these in a separate "I can't fly with this in my carry-on" pouch which lives in a very visible spot in my bag.
    For torches, you're also better off not putting these in tech pouches - if you need a torch (i.e. it's dark outside and so hard to see) then you really don't want to be digging into multiple pouches to get it - if your main bag has a fixed lanyard in one of the easy access pockets then I find this is the best place to keep your torch.
    Other than that, I would recommend going to large/factory direct luggage stores. There are a lot of really good no-name (or at least lest well known name) tech pouches out there which do an excellent job as well and can come with a lower price tag than even the tomtoc shown here (though that's not a dig at the three shown). The benefit of a tech pouch is that it will typically be protected by your bag so unless you throw your gear around then the materials of construction are not as critical, which can help to keep the price down. I have been using my zoomlite tech pouch for 3+ years now with no issues and it was the equivalent of about $20-25 USD.

      An “I can’t fly with this in my carry-on pouch” is the smartest thing I’ve read so far in 2024 👏👏👏 Great recommendations on finding factory direct sales and torches too (especially if people’s flashlights don’t have a lockout mode) 🙏

    I'm so proud to know you're one of us! (Torontonian) Fantastic delivery style that feels real and natural, unscripted even if there's a script somewhere, and you give us essential information without verbal fluff or padding to pad out the video length. Your thought process on what is useful and attractive tech and tech accessories is also very high quality, so that owning anything you recommend turns out to be a great choice. You're just a top notch guy.

    Great video as usual Maurice. I backed the vertex pouch on kickstarter and you identified a key issue. Which is it’s bulky which means you need a backpack if you’re going to transport it with other tech like a laptop.

    Great video (as usual).
    I bought the Peak Design tech pouch and toiletry pouch. They share similar construction. Issues that I personally have with both of them is too many specific compartments that 'bulk-out' the pouch when filled quickly. Basically I can get the same amount in a pouch that is almost half of the volume when there are less specific compartments. The most compact pouch I found is the Rick Steves small Go Go Gadget Tech Pouch. It is not so robust, has only a few mesh pockets, but suits my needs. I also own the same pouch in the larger size & can fit my tripod/selfie-stick in that as well. My husband inherited the PD Tech Pouch and enjoys it.

    I just wonder why none of the tech and/or travel UA-camrs ever shows how to fit a standard charger for a Windows laptop - they are much bigger than the MacBooks' power bricks, plus the cable is non-detachable. I would have to carry one of those tech pouches for this charger alone...

    • @blktauna
      @blktauna 9 місяців тому +2

      No one wants to travel with a brick. And in 30 years of consulting I have yet to meet a 'standard' windows charger.

    • @U1TR4F0RCE
      @U1TR4F0RCE 9 місяців тому

      not a hundred precent sure what you mean by standard windows charger, it looks to me like it probably would fit the surface pro charger which is my Windows Laptop, though I think for future laptops and travel my solution would be doing USB-C power charging.

    • @ElChronicler
      @ElChronicler 9 місяців тому +1

      If it helps, I had a Lenovo laptop with the undetachable cord out of the brick. I would wind the cable up, and stuff the brick and wrapped cable in the big magnetic pocket of the bellroy organizer in this video. It worked well.

  • @annissim4
    @annissim4 9 місяців тому +1

    Great insights as always! I'm a sucker for alpaka, but personally, I believe Bellroy's capability of storing a universal plug adapter, as well as a bulkier power bank (like Sharge's 20000mah) is a tiebreaker.

    My issue with Tech Pouches is they often are at odds with the sizing of my Everyday bags. When they are fully loaded they basically only fit in my full sized travel backpack.
    I have 2 but they are both loaded with essentially "troubleshooting" kits of 2 different varieties. They are basically "tech contractor go bags" I throw them in my Motorcycles bag on my way out if I need them.

  • @Martin-pb7ts
    @Martin-pb7ts 9 місяців тому

    I have the Alpaka Elements tech case. Olive with the blood orange interior. I absolutely love it. I found a voucher and got 15% off making it a really good buy in my opinion.
    I have to say I think you compared the Tomtoc and Belroy to the wrong Alpaka. In size and capacity the Alpaka Elements Tech Case is a much better comparison and about half the price of the Vertex. I kind of feel like you are comparing apples and oranges here.
    I was definitely considering the Belroy, they make great products but the book style opening means anything loose will probably slide out onto the table when you open it. Kind of like a grocery bags splitting as you try to catch everything. 🙂
    Thanks for the video.
    (I should add I use the pouch as a sling to carry my phone, wallet, glasses, etc. and it is great for that.)

  • @flipninja55
    @flipninja55 9 місяців тому

    First comment, the small wiha go tool kit has just inspired me and I am buying one ASAP.
    The Belroy may be something I look at when my current cheap amazon solution fails. I'd love to see what you actually carry in the Belroy (or other tech pouch) for your personal travels. To me, the Belroy seems a bit large for the bag that I use (BRAVO SLING MAX), but you seem to make it work. The cheap Amazon kit ($13 Bagsmart) that I'm using has been more than sufficient for my needs and is much slimmer for compatibility with my sling. It clearly won't hold as much as the Belroy, but I don't need that mcuh either.

    Have you ever looked at something like the Kable Kard or Budi 9in 1? They can do some sd card storage and reading, while also carrying various usb c based adapters and sim cards. Could be something to trim down some of the card reading jangle in there.
    I have also started carrying usb rechargeable aa and aaa batteries. As sometimes you need to have something for older non rechargeable tech.

    I like how your break down the tech carry. The size and amount of the tech matters which will drive e a person to an accordion, flat, or open layout. The amount of protection is also important. I in am fond of AER tech pouches in both sizes. I don’t like the accordion style as it’s too limiting. They are beautiful looking as well.

      Yes… a “single point of failure” is one of the reasons why - like I said in the intro - I haven’t used tech pouches in the past despite so many people recommending them to me. I gotta say though - testing these out before making this video - they really are quite convenient and satisfying to use 🙏

    Hello. I have been enjoying your videos. You have interesting and very useful content that encourages me to consider my EDC and travel purchases, and how well my gear integrates with every thing I do. When looking at the TomToc and ALPACA tech bags, slings, etc., are they slash proof/resistant, and have RFID shielding to slow down theft and data skimming? Thanks again for the great content!

  • @ogtessaract

    I got the Alpaca Elements tech case when it finally went on sale in my price range because I loved your vid about using it as a sling. It's a little too small for me for an easy grab-go every day sling (I'm a tech nerd and a mom - need a little more random "cruft" space) but watching this vid... 😂 I know what my tech pouch is now. 👍(seems very similar to the Alpaca Vertex.) Any reason why you wouldn't use the Alpaca Elements as a tech pouch? Especially as you seem to not be using it as an edc sling anymore? Thanks for the review. Love your vids.

    I bought three types of tech pouches, and abandoned all of them for one simple reason-they take up too much space in my luggage. It turns out that simple plastic zip bags will compress much better and save a ton of space. I put these bags into my roller bag or my computer bag. If you don’t have to worry about space (i.e. you check your bags) I think the tech pouches offer more organization. But, again, once I’m at my hotel, air bandb, cruise liner cabin, etc. the tech gadgets come out and are on the table anyway.

      I still stick to my tech pouches. I find it having in one place is much easier for me to get my stuff out and put it on the desk while I'm working. Be it at the hotel or at the coffee shop.
      But you're right about the size and space it's eating up in your bag, so finding a perfect size is such a tough job but also fun.

    I would like to offer another idea, for your consideration: FOR CRYING OUT LOUD, do you REALLY need "a pocket or strap or whatever for EACH AND EVERY thing you carry around with you?" GOOD GRIEF! All of the "organization" in these things just WASTES SPACE, as if you just absolutely COULD NOT "dig" for a few seconds into just one, big pouch. There are "Stand-up Zipper Bags" from Klein Tools, and likely other companies, that will hold some amount of stuff, without a dozen different pockets and straps and so on. For instance, I have a rather large Anker power bank, along with a high-power charger, several USB cables, a short extension cord, and so on -- just "in a bag" like these. I use a couple of those bags for my overall "organization," and I can fit whatever I want into bags like that. In the end, I have DRAWERS full of old, unused "organizers" like those mentioned here -- but what I USE are a couple of these Klein Tools bags.

    • @marklong8608

      I whole heartedly agree, these pouches take up way more space than the stuff in them. I'll do you one better, I just use a cheap meshbag for my cables and chargers and a ~9x6" zipper eagle creek sack for my toiletries (got this long before there were so many cheap alternatives). It's been working fine for many many years.

      I really need tech organization and I don't agree with what you're saying. Sure if you want cheap stuff go get it, there's nothing wrong with it. But if you want great quality then you're going to pay more. I have had cheap tech pouches and they do the job but they lose their shape quickly and the stretchy bits lose their stretchiness, etc. I have a cheap tech pouch and it site in my drawer so it doesn't matter but when I want to carry stuff around every day I was something decent that will last.
      I use the Alpaka Elements tech case as a daily carry sling pouch/man bag. The build quality is fantastic and I can already tell it will last a long time. None of the cheap tech pouches I have seen or used would last in the way I use it.
