Great videos. When I pulled my distributor, the gear game up the shaft - how would I know if the washers on the bottom fell into the case? The engine is installed in the car....
get one of those little telescoping magnets and stick it down there and take them out. There should be at least 2 on a type 1 engine. If you only pull up one or none your most likely going to have to split the case to find them.
Don't panic. Hopefully you got all the bakeolight sleeve out.....? Leave all that stock stuff out and install a electric low pressure pump and maybe a regulator to keep under 3PSI. I'm running that on 3 of my 4 cars and never had a problem sense.
@@TheEZGZ thank you EZGZ. I DID PANIC. GOT 99.9% OF IT OUT MISSING 1/8 INCH PIECE. REMOVED OIL SCREEN AND FLOODED MOTOR WITH OIL GOT IT CAME RIGHT OUT THE BOTTOM.THANK YOU FOR YOUR RESPONSE. SIGNED NO LONGER IN A PANIC.
If you go back and forth that is normal play due to the beveled gears and other tolerance stacking. Just turn you crankshaft in the normal direction of rotation to set timing and other settings
Always good videos. A question for you with the distributor drive, are the drive sizes the same from early 1200 cc to latter 1700(71). I have a complet 1200. But a incomplete 1700cc neads distributor drive... Cheers 🍻
I want to say yes but not sure. 1300 thru 1600 are interchangeable. The only 1700 I know of came out in the 72 Buss with type 4 engine and that is a different animal. Don't forget the shims that the distributor shaft rest on. Good Luck with your project.
yeah i have that volkswagon repair book by muir since i am a complete idiot lol. Only replaced heads on the VW I had but what you said is good information to remember. I had a '73 not so super super beetle lol Thanks for sharing
I nead to buy this tool. As mine is stuck in . Ive split the case ,as the previose owner rebuilt the motor then left it sitingbin the weather with no distributor top of case is showing corosin ive left the half case soaking in whiteoil transoil mix , i can only move it if under hammer , if removed and reclean block would this still be ok case to reuse....
If this is your first engine rebuild I would look for something else. Don't expect to get something for free and turn it into a runner. There are lot's of video's on U tube that show guys starting up a engine that hasn't run in 20 years but the truth is even if that drive they won't last long in normal service.
In theory "YES" Some early 009 distributor's had a retarded #3 lobe but they haven't done that in decades. It was suppose to help #3 run cooler. That whole subject could be a topic for debate. Only effective if you running on the ragged edge. I like a bigger safety margin. IMHO
Did you know how they retarded the spark???? They made the cam lobe peak shorter. So the point gap actually became smaller as well. I thought that was pretty clever. Hang onto those old ones.
I've been running an engine for several months with a backwards gear. The only time i have to take it into consideration is at maintenance time. I bought the engine off an old VW shop. They'd paint marked the 1 cyl on the distributor cap, so the mystery wasn't hard to solve.
The motor stamp is AE. I have it running well. I'll see if I can get a video up and link it I enjoy your videos they helped me get this thing running. Maybe you can tell me what it is exactly.
That sounds odd like something you should be able to see? Could the gear teeth on the new dizzy be off a little or have sharp edges? You could take a knife sharpening stone and just lightly take off the corner. The pin that holds the gear on is off center. Have you thought of swapping gears only from the old to the new?? Please let us know what you end up doing.
Great video and very informative! You answered my question perfectly! Keep up the good work!
It is aggravating putting the case together and finding out it moved on you . But like you say it doesn't really matter.
Yeah, when you ending up buying a car with one like that the first time you try to do a tune up your scratching your head alright. Stay cooooool
Thank you for posting this video.
No problem. I hope it helped you decide what to do. Don't forget the links in the description box to purchase the tool and see how I set mine up.
EZGZ once again your the Man.
Blessings and more Blessings
Thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge.
I just went out to my garage to confirm I had my two spacers for my new build, I'll sleep better tonight now :)
Twice as many sweet dreams to you. hehehe
Man I love these videos!
Thanks for watching and commenting

EZGZ. I put the wrong fuel pump rod in bent the rod broke the sleeve what other damage did I do .

Whooo Hooo! Glad the VW Gods were smiling on you. Good Job Dave!
Hi can you please help me, when I turn the fly wheel there is a slight delay before the distributor arm movies, is that normal.
Thanks 👍

I love that idiot book and often refer to it if I am in a hurry. LOL
Good to know. Haven't ever had that issue. Keep rolling and videoing. VW:-)
Yeah, Just trying to help. I been there as we all have. You have an unexpected problem and need info ASAP

I have a 356 and apparently my #1 is where #4 should be (to the left) is that feasible?
Thanks, figured as much. It runs fine and timing is good, just had the orginal bosch distributor rebuilt.
Would that affect the number 3 cylinder using a 009?

Ah ok I only have old 009's

Hint...Don't tighten the tool unless you have a drive installed on the end of the tool, you'll break the fingers off of it.
Your right. But first the little ball drops out and your on your hands and knee's looking for it. "Not that I would know personally " hehehehe
Legend
You are a Loyal and Faithful soldier. Carry on my friend.
Just bought a distributator. It going in only on #3. The old dist goes in like it should. Very odd any suggestions? On a 71 vw
Make sure your #1 cylinder is at TDC . The rotor will rotate a bit but it should land ok.
You didn't say what kind of dizzy you had?
It is vacuum advance. I am replacing it with a similar newer vacuum advance.
I have the old dist in and r uh bing it right now but the advance on it seems worn
