ERASING BASICS and ERASER TYPES

- Mike explains and demonstrates the most common forms of eraser - including one (his 'go to' eraser) that might surprise you! How erasers work - and their faults. Ink erasers. Soft vinyl art erasers. Kneadable erasers. And more...
More existing DRAW WITH MIKE videos, such as this one, will be released here periodically, plus dedicated UA-cam drawing hints & tips videos too.

Thank you! I passed that on to my wife, who doesn't necessarily agree with you. 🙂
That idea about making a rolling cylinder is brilliant. I will always to that from now on.
Knowledge and understanding, always finding that in your videos
Mike you are my new favourite. Blue Tack!! It seems so obvious to me now. Brilliant
Thanks, Max. I accidentally discovered Blu-Tack when a pack of kneadable erasers were faulty and broke up when formed into points. I use the Blu-Tack in sheer desperation... and I've used nothing else since. It's just so much better in use than a kneadable eraser. And - you'll have to this yourself to appreciate the benefit - whatever it picks up, it NEVER puts back down onto the paper. It just absorbs it completely.
Hi Mike, thanks for the valuable advice, we look forward to new advice!
Thanks, Jonny. I'm going through a cluster of migraines at present, but as soon as they've cleared I'll get back into production. And to save time, I might do what I did here: make an existing Members Only video available publicly.
I love Blu Tack!
Your videos are so underrated
Agreed! Thanks... :) But I'll still keep making them. I've been having a break, but I've got a ton of subjects to begin to cover very soon.
Blu Tack❣️Thank You
Try it. You won't be disappointed. I have a tutorial on its use on my website that will help you too.
I've used nothing else for many years. It's so versatile that, in my opinion, nothing else comes close to fulfilling its usefulness. And there are two more videos available at DWM that demonstrate its uses too.
You Da Man, man!
Thank you, young Master Kenobi :)
@@drawwithmike You splled Padwan wrong! :)
Waiting for a video on Lighting setup
I love Blu Tack, too. It's great stuff! Now, some help with graphite shine might be nice. I love the super darks to add a nice contrast in my drawings, but shine is a problem. Charcoal doesn't look right to me. Any help would be appreciated, and thank you SO much for the terrific videos!
I've got that covered, Kathleen. I tried a carbon and graphite mix in the early days, but like you and charcoal, I soon gave that up and decided I'd be a "graphite purist". :)
But, as you said, the sheen on the shiny plates of graphite is a problem. Then I discovered matte fixative - aka Workable fixative. It dries with a matte finish that removes almost all the sheen, and the blacks pop! Go here to see how:

@@drawwithmike Thank you so much! I'm just getting up, but I'll check out that video later!
Great! I love your explanations. I've noticed the things you explain here, but now I understand why it happens that way. Thanks a lot!
What do you think about electric erasers? I don't have any. Some people use them as the tombow zero, but according to what you were saying about the hair, I guess you don't use it at all, do you? Have a nice day Mike!
P.S: The illustrations you put in your videos are very helpful to understand the whole idea in case I don't understand all the words :D

I have an affliction: an enquiring mind. :) But that's helped me to understand that when you know WHY things occur, you can more easily avoid them. OR you can make use of them; like drawing 4H marks that later appear as "highlights" in areas of 6B. Because soft grades skate over hard grades. (If you try that, be aware that it's not guaranteed to work).
Electric erasers? I've never used one, but I know artists who use them quite effectively. But I have little use for any eraser these days (apart from Blu-Tack) because, as I've developed negative drawing over the years, I work around white and lighter shapes rather than trying to cut through to them.
And I definitely would NEVER use an eraser to create light hairs. Erasers create soft-edged lines. Hair possesses very hard and sharp edges. This might help you understand my approach: ua-cam.com/video/bGwU75Z6ARk/v-deo.html
@@drawwithmike Thank you so much! I just saw the video you recommended.

@@drawwithmike Thank you! Impressive example drawings. :D
My kneadable eraser is acting like it's blue tack!
It will... but not quite as well :) OK, I admit I'm biased, but Blu-Tack is superior.
Hehe i ll buy blue tack if it s available here! Thank u sir
@@anthonysbliss If you want to try it and can't find it locally (I think it's mainly available in the UK, Australia and Finland), try my website's shop: sibleyfineart.com/shop.htm. It's fairly cheap and I ship worldwide.
Thank u thank u thank u ... but it ll only be in the future cuz i dun have any bank card yet😭
@@anthonysbliss A kneaded eraser will do just fine - just not quite as well as Blu-Tack :)
Loved this, thank you... So much good info that I was not acquainted with... THANK YOU ~Roz Fruchtman aka @RozSpirations
Thanks, Roz! Just stuff I've learned over the years and wanted to pass on. If you want to try Blu-Tack and can't source it, I ship it worldwide: sibleyfineart.com/shop.htm - and NO I don't get commission. 😉
