Ben Cummins wrongly sin bins Matt Gillett (Round 25, 2014)

- Ben Cummins controversially sin binned Matt Gillett in the 54th minute in the Broncos 30-22 win over the Dragons. Gillett was ruled (wrongly) to be offside from a penalty tap as Benji Marshall bolted 40 metres downfield. It was later revealed, in a rare moment, that Cummins apologised to Gillett for his actions.

This is where a video ref should be able to step in and say, you've got it wrong and reverse the decision
Exactly right
Or introduce coaches challenge, you get 3 each half
@@Roronoa_Zoro_Official not 3 it would slow the game down way to much. 1 per half max
Yeah or the frickin other ref.....

@@claudiusatlas8083 one bad call? He's had more than a few and if anyone working a real job screwed up as much or as bad as Cummings they wouldn't have a job
@@claudiusatlas8083 Thats exactly it. Ben Cummins is a very talented referee. Just one famous call and people believe hes the worst. No one is perfect and especially there isn't a perfect referee out there that isn't going to get every call spot on. This call may of been a bit of a question mark but still.
Love how Gus says "why" at exactly the same time as Gillett.
The most ridiculous thing about this decision is that Gillett was onside at the tap anyway. It was Thaiday that wasn't back the 10 at the tap, but he ran himself back onside. Cummins got this decision wrong in multiple ways.
The mark is given on the 30m line on the Dragons side of the field. Gillett is standing at about 42m, and gets involved in the tackle 26m out from Broncos ingoal. He ran back 32m from what was already an onside position and still gets binned for being offside. What a joke.

I know your comment is three years old but I am only just seeing it now and curious to which sport isn't run by human decision and error. No way in a game as fast as League are you going to get 100% of the calls right.
Brian East, exactly!
@@kyleHunter1986 bras it doesn't matter how fast the game is for a call like that, and when the players told him off he thought nothing of it

players make mistakes too can they afford to make mistakes?
2019 GRAND FINAL? Why wasn’t he dealt with here, no more for this clown.
I've said it once and I will say it again, refs should be held as highly accountable for their action just like the players, but refs make mistakes u say, so do players and they get carded or fine and or suspended, which can determine the outcome of a game. So can the ref and they can make stupid decisions and get away with it.
What's to stop 1 of the other officials having a word, pointing out the obvious error and getting on with the game without all the drama?
Rickaby G Common sense.
The refs can't show they are wrong.........when have you ever seen or heard of a ref reversing their call? Happens in all sports, cricket, union, afl.......if they show that they get things wrong then they get questioned more.
League like union and AFL needs to stop talk at or between ref and players. No explaining rules or anything, if you are playing professionally you know the rules.
Also league like union, AFL and soccer need to hold their refs to account. We need to help them though, they have to many things to do now out there. It is not their job to tell players if a ball is out of a scrum, dominant tackle, move........etc. it is because of this extra work now that they are making more mistakes cause in a half second they have to complete 20 tasks meaning they can't be accurate all the time.
@@MrPaulviles i see it pretty often in cricket tbh
Happens pretty often in basketball. A ref makes a call, the other ref will run up and have a chat and they change the decision. There is even rule for them getting it wrong called "inadvertent whistle". Which means play just restarts as if no whistle was blown.
@@MrPaulviles Seen it the other day in the GF lmfao
These refs must feel like real wankers the next day when the watch the replay
How is he possibly offside the players ran 40metres refs are bad at their job
@vMystjc yep - Gillett onside at the quick tap
That ref needs to be sacked

..
When this guy was announced as the 2019 GF ref, this was the first incident I thought of. I knew he was going to stuff up. He's not a rookie here!
The line was way back on the dragons 40m line and Matt gilet tackled him on the Broncos 30m line, that’s a huge difference
the greatest clanger of all time
When Gillet's name came up when he got sin binned, i would have loved for a ? to be there. Since you know even the commentators were confused.
MANCHESTER UNITED no one was talking about soccer, this is happening in Australia 🇦🇺 where people like me live, and we actually watch rugby. Soccer is the more popular sport but no one asked about that
Hate ur name and profile pic btw
MANCHESTER UNITED you comment this on every video piss off you GC
He has done it again this year
“Greatest clanger I’ve ever seen in my live” then watches 2019 grand final 😮
The fact that the Dragons player was even calling for a penalty is problematic
Gee, you don't think that 2019 Grand Final was... RIGGED????
It changed the game, cost punters money who went 13+ Bronncos; shouldn't ref again
Verity12ful oh no! won't somebody please think of the punters.
I know it's been a month or so since the grand final i only just found this video but still he ruined a great grand final and robbed the raiders of a premiership Ben Cummings is a disgrace to this game
He was onside at the tap.... pause at 5 second mark. Penalty given and mark is right on the 30 meter line. Gillett is fourth bronco from top of screen and is approximately 12 meters from where the mark is given. crazy crazy call. everyone outraged that they had run 40 meters and therefore everyone had retreated but he was onside from the tap...
The only thing I can think of is that when Hodges caught Marshall and forced him to off-load, he convinced himself that this was a tackle, which would have obliged the Broncos to retreat 10 metres beyond where Hodges caught Marshall, which Gillett obviously didn't do.
Yeah that’s the only way to make any sense of probably the worst decision ever made haha
This is how you know which ref goes for which team
Ben Cummins is one off the worst ref's in the NRL
Same guy who ruined the 2019 grand final
Fast forward to 2019 and Ben is still the word ref
how ben cummins is still allowed to referee after this is crazy. Surely actually knowing the rules is a prerequisite for refereeing a game.
agreed
The man's record speaks for itself
Now that ladies and Gentleman is a man of the match performance
he bettered this decision on 7th October, 2019 in the grand final lol. Well done Ben Cummins!
Just one of many controversial decisions that we would rather not have in the game as we see it today
Being a ref is a tough job, but this guy (Ben Cummins) is always surrounded by controversy, last night's game he gave 24 penalties!!
I spoke to gillo at the time and wondered out loud if Cummins was corrupt or incompetent. He didn’t answer.
I thought u had to get 10 metres in front of the ball player, meaning that if ur offside when the ball is played you need to make it back further then when the ball was played. Not sure if this is an actual rule or just something my coach told me when I was 7
and they wonder why the crowds are dropping like a rock
Will stick to this call but not a 6 again hahaha
3 years later and theyre all still a joke...Klein is one ref who should resigned before hes very publicly sacked
How could he possibly be offside?
I think what went through Cummings head was when the offload happend there was a play the ball which if gillet had tackled him like he did if there was a play the ball he would have been sent for 10.. Was a bad lapse of concentration there.
Also the guy involved with anasta vs south Sydney debacle
I've never heard gus sound so confused and straight up lost...
Watch the grand final six again call
Is he the same ref who did the Bulldogs and Rabbits game a few years back and the crowd went nuts?
You realise that the commentator and Matt Gillett said why at the same time
The ref should sponsor spec savers cause he’s he’s not at the moment
Isn’t his name Ben specsavers
Specsavers sponsor the umpires over here in the AFL, and it improves nothing. Shocking calls week after week from the umps
wheres the captain. that's where he comes in and stand up for his team. Either the ref sorts it out or they don't play until its sorted.
And the sickening bit they have not got the bottle to replace him.
when i was playing last sunday in under 12 div 1 for nrl i got sin bined for asking the reff who is kicking! i am going to cooma for football tomorow and it is 8 intchis deep in snow wish me luck!!
I am so glad it this refs las season
I've got an idea how Cummins may have got this wrong, there's 4 players offside and the player binned actually never gets back to his defensive line and whether Cummings thought cause of that he was still offside IDK, but I agree that it's the wrong call.
***** Stopped a promising attack situation where they could've called, think Cummin's decided it was a professional foul
+Aled Fellowes doesn't matter as soon as Marshall runs 10m forward everyone is automatically onside he has no excuse
nope, only players offside at time of tap were Thaiday and McCollough
But he should have been humble enough to reverse his decision. He's not just an idiot but an arsehole for sticking to a wrong decision out of pride
I wonder what state the referees are from
This kind of crap still happens every week to the Broncos, nothing has changed.
" HOW COULD POSSIBLY BE OFFSIDE ?????? ".
That's my only favorite team. Go Broncos 🥰🥰🥰🥰👍👍.Your are still the best
Referees need to be banned for a number of weeks for bad calls 🙄
I got sin binned in England once after being head highed and punched from behind. Ref said I ran in and started unloading, which was kinda hard coz I was lying on the ground bleeding from the mouth.
+Martin Pye wow you're a fuckin monster mate. no room for the likes of you and that attitude in our game. keep it clean
Martin, you should be banned for life if you want to start headbutting players' fists..... it just ain't on pal.
Susan Walters Headbutting people’s fists, I genuinely had a good laugh at that. 😂😂
If the Broncos had a captain who kept their cool and spoke to the ref with any clarity they might have gotten that changed. Yelling in the ref's face did nothing but make him stop listening (obviously the call was terribly wrong, but a captain like Smith may well have been able to change the ref's mind on the sinbin).
This still has to be the worst call in the history of NRL
I wouldn't be surprised if a player punches that ref.
That’s normal for refs always on Sydney side
And 4yrs later he is still the absolute best ref... 😂😂🤣 jk Cummins is the worst i cant believe alot of his calls, im sure he's a good bloke but a crap on field ref
Can somebody please explain for me
I'm I diehard NRL fan and I don't know that rule. I'm an idiot.
I was at this game.
So do I give you a like for mentioning you went to that game?
Number 9 in the dragons dont know the rules. Watch him always putting his hand in the air
The bad part isn't the mistake - its that the umpire just accepted the claim from the dragons 9 and without thinking did it, then when others came to ask why, he just tells them to go away. Was he paid off? Broconos only just held on for an unlikely win 1 man down...
He should not be a referee
The refs have to much pride
Ben" makes up the rules as I go" Cummins
That's so wrong and the referee made big mistake
Thanks for stating exactly what the title of the video means good job :)
Ref got it right he wasn't onside from the tap so he should not get involved with the play
Once the ball goes 10m he then automatically becomes onside again (the ball had gone 30m by the time he got involved).....do you even know the rules mate??
Don't mate me mate he is offside from a tap thus he is out of play he can not interfere
@@coreymorris3031 once the ball travels 10m everyone who was offside fromthe tap becomes onside again, Learn the rules you flog

spidy278 how? The ref also ran 40m himself. So how could he not know?
lol i dont know about you but i am definitely aware when i run more than 20m let alone 40m in a full sprint

What's the rule for the offside. Someone.....Please tell me
You have to be back 10m from the original play the ball I.e where benji Marshall tapped and ran from, he was clearly back inside like 20-30 m
Also, none of the Broncos were offside when he tapped it
Thanks mate!
+Thaddaeus Punshon not true. 2 were offside.
+Icey Snip3z no benji tapped on the 30m the first bronco is on the 40m line

I'm a union guy, can someone explain to me what the player was accused of by the ref?
Aval Sirithanawat Being offside when they play went 40 metres up field, it is one of the worst decisions I’ve ever seen in a Rugby League game.
and obviously you dont get sent off just for being off side... being off side may have been a constant issue earlier in the game so the ref would have told the captain (to tell his team) to keep it in check... but yeah ref was definitely wrong with this decision
@@dividingchain53 you can get sent off for being offside if you are seen to deliberately slow down the play, just like if you immediately tackle a player after they take a quick tap on a penalty without getting onside, it is offside but since you are slowing the play you get sent off
We need more than 1 challenge!!! These refs get it wrong all the freakin time.
