Bernina made the first ones. Mine was bought in 1988 and is still a great machine I will keep until I die. The knee lift is just one feature of a Bernina; it is a true lifetime machine.
I made a bowl from this kind of rope from the Dollar Tree last night. The green rope. I was very impressed how great it came out and so easy!! The cotton bowl is little harder to be a first go at it. Buy this rope to start out practicing. It took me 15 minutes it make it. I swirled my end and added a button. I was so excited how it came out. Its a better price at $1.25 then the cotton rope at $21.75. Eeks!
I had purchased the same rope at Home Depot 2 yrs ago to make macrame plant hangers. Works great, and there are a few color options. Now i will try sewing rope bowls. Thank you for posting.
I just bought this rope yesterday at the dollar tree. My thought was if i dont want a basket this color, i can wrap it with fabric scraps or color of my choice. I made a really cute purse using rope several years ago. I have also made small oblong bowls that sit bext to my sewing machines, serger and embroidery machines, i use these to hold snips, tweezers etc next to each machine....ive made coasters and placemats also....very cute and fun. Thank you for your videos.
I love how you always find alternative materials to use. A candy bowl is the perfect size to be able to make several for holiday gifts. Thank you as always, Christopher.
I am so glad I happened upon your site! I can't wait to get the supplies and start making some for gifts for friends/family. Thanks for sharing your techniques with us!!!
Wow Christopher! I've always wanted to make a rope bowl, but never found one that had an appealing finished edge. Yours has the perfect fade-in finish. Thanks so much for continuing to enlighten and inspire us. Off to the dollar-twenty five store.
You hook me on bowl making! I’m hitting up harbor Freights .. always have gone with husband.. they have great cheap storage boxes for threads and etc.. now rope hunting in LA! Love your sewing😉
I will have to look in the Dollar store for that rope, really nice! A new project to try and do, thank you, Christopher. At the start of your video, you mentioned about using a wider spool cap, I was always told to put the cut end of the spool on the other side of the spool cap. In other people's pictures of rope bowls, when ending the bowl at the top, instead of cutting the end, I've seen a swirl on the outside of the basket to finish it.
I think I'll make a bowl (red rope) and place ornament bulbs in it for the dining room table. Then after the holidays you can use it for other occasions. I think maybe I will wrap the rope with fabric and change the look totally for Spring - like whites/yellows/greens/pinks. Why not? Thanks for your videos and great ideas!!!!
Good for you telling about spool. I'm glad I'm someone who does go to the hardware store.I get my rope there. I'll check out the dollar store. Thanks. 👍
Brand new top of the line sewing machines are flying off the shelves. People who sew have the money and the power. Sewing allows one to become self sufficient and independent to make money.
What sewing machines do you like and what needle do you use for making those baskets? I am thinking about upgrading my sewing machine and would like some recommendations.
i love that you are using a janome 9000! my favorite and very first machine. I bought brand new.. mine died last year and the store told me it was not repairable because it needs a new motherboard... I haven't been able to throw it out yet ..
What a great video tutorial!❤ Thank you, you explain so well. I have a Brother and Baby Lock Soprano, love them but have never used the knee lift!🤦♀️😁Thanks again! Subscribed! 👍
If you don't have a spool cap just flip the spool so the end with the slash in the plastic is at the far end. Only one end of the spool has the slash. Thread will unravel away from that end and cannot get caught.
Hello, I'm Tracey from Australia, I make these bowls, but I call it a dump it bowl as I sit it by the front door and place all my keys and car remotes in there so I don't loss anything
Always put the knotched end of your thread at the bottom of the spline and it will not catch because the thread is pulling from the opposite side over the spool cap.
Hello. In the beginning of this video you showed a variety of bowls including a neutral/natural colored bowl. What type of rope was that, what size and where did you get it from. Thanks for your tutorials - I think they are great!!!!
I'm sitting here thinking that would make a beautiful oblong tote bag for shopping, with something waterproof lining it and weatherproof spray on the outside! Would that work?
Just found your video. I see it was 1 year ago but have a question….spool cap. Does flat go against spool or does point of cap go in thread spool? Thanks❤
Just make sure that you put that end of the spool that has the split towards the right..away from the thread cap! No chance of getting a hang up in the end split.
Why not just flip the spool around so the slit on the top of the spool of thread is now on the bottom? Now you no longer have to worry about the slit on the spool of thread!
Prices will never go down because when we outsourced to other countries to increase profitability for shareholders (and selling out the American people) prices were lower because of CHEAP LABOR. To make a living in this country and feed your family, moms and dads can't work for $4/hr. So when companies bring things back here and have to pay workers more, goods will also be more expensive. Now, they could tell their shareholders they won't make as much profit, but..... A - that will never happen and B - those shareholders will go to companies that support their greed and leave the companies that want to support American families. It's disgusting! Anyway, back to sewing......lol

Thanks for showing a different type of rope. It never occurred to me to use anything but cotton clothesline fabric.
Many years ago I worked in a sewing factory and all the industrial sewing machines had knee lifts. It's a game changer.
What are knee lifts?
@@pdelmercado it’s a hands-free feature that allows you to lift the presser foot by swinging your right knee to the right.
Bernina made the first ones. Mine was bought in 1988 and is still a great machine I will keep until I die. The knee lift is just one feature of a Bernina; it is a true lifetime machine.
An oblong bowl would be nice for serving dinner rolls or bread.

You are SEW talented!! 🧵

I made an oval one last night. It was perfect for the remotes to the TV.
One of my favorite quotes I use daily, "Better safe than sorry!"....Thanks Chris, love your educational videos! ❤
Good tip pointing out that "slit" and using the spool cap is just the answer! TY
I'm so glad you're using the Janome 9000 because that's the machine I have and I love it!
An oblong bowl can be used as a BOWL, everything fits. Long bowls are good to hold your scissors. 🇨🇦
Thanks for this, I super appreciate the clos up view. I finally was able to see clearly just how this works!
Great presentation. Thank you. Thanks, too, for the melting tip. This was fun to watch. I love making rope-stuff.
Forgot to add: new subbie here.
I love how you always find alternative materials to use. A candy bowl is the perfect size to be able to make several for holiday gifts. Thank you as always, Christopher.
Thank you for sharing your experience over the years!
I am so glad I happened upon your site! I can't wait to get the supplies and start making some for gifts for friends/family. Thanks for sharing your techniques with us!!!
Love it! That would make a great bread basket!
Enjoying your videos.. Learning new tricks..Thx for sharing
Beautiful work. Glad I found your channel
Thanks for sharing the oblong basket 😍
Wow Christopher! I've always wanted to make a rope bowl, but never found one that had an appealing finished edge. Yours has the perfect fade-in finish. Thanks so much for continuing to enlighten and inspire us. Off to the dollar-twenty five store.
Super cool! Maybe a fun summer project!
Just BEAUTIFUL!
Can't wait to try.
Tried it out and made a fruit bowl for the dinning room table. Super easy
OMG this is the exact problem I’m having and I never even heard of spool caps!!! Thank you!!
Check your owner's manual.
Loving the videos and an oblong bowl would be a great bread bowl on a festive table.
I went to Dollar Tree and made one in yellow and then made a lid, turned out awesome!!!
Beautiful! Thank you for sharing
Love this video - I haven't had the courage yet to try using flame to melt and remove threads, etc.
I love this thank you! How come you use a leather needier verse say a jeans needle?
I love that rope color..going today to get me some
Fun tutorial, actually YOU made it fun. Thanks
You hook me on bowl making! I’m hitting up harbor Freights .. always have gone with husband.. they have great cheap storage boxes for threads and etc.. now rope hunting in LA! Love your sewing😉

Oh, oh, someone did not listen to my video where I had mentioned many different ways to finish the end. ;)

TY for putting that little tid bit about the economy... too many out there with blinders on!
Brand new top of the line sewing machines are flying off the shelves. People who sew have the money and the power. Sewing allows one to become self sufficient and independent to make money.
I use an oblong bowl for my remote controls 😊
love this
What sewing machines do you like and what needle do you use for making those baskets? I am thinking about upgrading my sewing machine and would like some recommendations.
The slit is only at one end of the spool. If you don’t have a spool cap, put the slit at the bottom so the thread doesn’t feed off that end

I like the oblong bowl. You could use for bread or rolls if it was larger.
What a great video tutorial!❤ Thank you, you explain so well. I have a Brother and Baby Lock Soprano, love them but have never used the knee lift!🤦♀️😁Thanks again! Subscribed! 👍
I like melting the end. Nice

Here is a perfect example of why you need to always use a spool cap. Time code 13:11

Hello, I'm Tracey from Australia, I make these bowls, but I call it a dump it bowl as I sit it by the front door and place all my keys and car remotes in there so I don't loss anything
The empty rope holders look perfect to store quilt binding
If I ever become a quilter I will keep that in mind.
Thank you for sharing
Doll rope, perfect.
Thank you!!! Very helpful.
Great idea. Wondering if this was one package or more. Going to check how you attached the next package to make a bigger bowl.
If you watched the whole video without skipping through it and turned up the volume you would have your answer. ;)
This was so cool, thank you! I have inspiration running out of my ears now! 👍
Always put the knotched end of your thread at the bottom of the spline and it will not catch because the thread is pulling from the opposite side over the spool cap.
How about an oblong bowl with handles that would make a wonderful ladies bag.
thank you
Hello. In the beginning of this video you showed a variety of bowls including a neutral/natural colored bowl. What type of rope was that, what size and where did you get it from. Thanks for your tutorials - I think they are great!!!!
Which sewing machine you used, could you please tell
I'm just wondering if the rope is polyester or nylon vs. cotton?
How do you determine how long your starting loop is ?
He tells you in all his videos he does not have recipes he eyes everything.
Thanks❤
Please watch the video again and see how I am holding it against the spool of thread.
Oval would make a great breadbasket or for cookie presentation!
Thank you for the informative video! Where did you find that seam guide measurement sticker?
Local dealer.
Great video! How much rope was in the package? I really have to try this!
Thank you so much for this tutorial! I appreciate it. Might you make another with embroidery inside?
Not my style. But you can do it.
How did you get the outside black?
So when you start the curving for the sides, is the rope beginning to overlap a little? I just applied for the Facebook group.
An oblong bowl would be great for bread rising.
I much prefer an oblong bowl too!!😬
Juki has a knee lifter. I have JUKI, Babylock.
Aren’t Babylock and Brother the same company????
What is the secret when making oval bowls? Mine always seem to dip down on the sides, so frustrating.
You need 100% cotton rope. The poly ropes are much softer.
I use a walking foot
Just make sure that you put that end of the spool that has the split towards the right..away from the thread cap! No chance of getting a hang up in the end split.
Why not just flip the spool around so the slit on the top of the spool of thread is now on the bottom? Now you no longer have to worry about the slit on the spool of thread!
My spools of thread have slits on the top and the bottom. He is correct to always use spool caps.
Red❤️
I want to make oblong bowl/basket for a loaf of home made bread. thats my use...
3:21 😊
dollar tree has a big craft area look in the hardware are for the rope
First time I’ve ever heard the words Sewing and STD in the same sentence 😂
Thickness of rope please tell
Make a nice bread bowl 🥣
You could almost wear that for a hat!!! lol
Or oval

You could end your bowl with a hoop..just a thought .
Couldn't this idea become a large rug
Trust me use the spool cap, I have experienced the mess that comes with not.
