- Follow along with Superior Threads marketing manager Amy Domke as she teaches how to make rope bowls. Rope bowls are simply put, bowls made of rope! Rope bowls are made by stitching rope together, while strategically shifting the rope to create a bowl shape. For a fun addition, you can also add fabric to your rope bowls by wrapping your rope before stitching. We hope you have fun building your rope bowl!
OMNI-V 9068 Thread: www.superiorth...
Wonderful video 😊 You are a pleasure to watch. I have just one suggestion...tell us the weight and composition of your thread and your needle size. You gave us all the other pertinent information, but I searched the comments to find all the other information. Thank you so much for sharing with us 💖💖💖
I believe the thread is a 40 wt 2-ply thread (Superior Threads). I clicked on the link in the description box as I was interested to know that also. I can only guess the needle may be a 90/14 or 100/16 to manage the thickness of the rope without breaking. Oh I just realized you posted this a year ago - you probably already have the information
Amy! I've watched a ton of sewing demos. You're so easy to watch, your kindness comes through.
Great tutorial! I've seen these bowls and wanted to try making one, but haven't gotten to it yet. You have rekindled my interest in this with a very good, detailed video explanation. Thank you!
I was just thinking I have too many crafty hobbies and I have to stop learning more. And then UA-cam popped this in my sidebar, and I thought, "Actually, yes. I do need to learn how to make adorable rope bowls, let's goooo."
Dollar tree rope?
😂😂😂you and me. I didn't want to try this but it seems I will have to add it.
Mee three!😀
This was the first video I’ve watched of yours. I enjoyed it immensely. Thank you for giving such concise instructions and not spending 20min describing the bowl uses. I appreciate instruction videos that start out with a quick showing of end products followed by instruction, variations, and more showing at the end. This was ideal! Thanks!
Fabulous tutorial 👏I have made several bowls over the years, but your starting method with the straight stitch X and the zig zag X is so much easier than trying to zig zag from the center. Love learning new things, thanks so much.
Curious where did you get your clear table extension that’s attached to your sewing machine?
Lulu, I’m getting pretty involved in this craft and googled extension table for Husqvarna Jade 20, and there is one made specifically for mine. At $99, I will wait a bit longer. Good luck and keep on stitching!
Hi Amy, this is my first video of yours that I watched, I loved it. I was wonder if you used a different needle to do the stitching? Other than a regular everyday one. Thank you for your video, I’m going to try it. 🥰
Loved your video. I'm in the UK and wondered if you could share the brands of rope you use and diameter etc 💜
Hi Amy! 👋 Great tutorial! I haven't made any before, but definitely will try after seeing this!
This is great idea, I think I can make these , using Christmas colored fabrics and give as presents with sweets in it.
Would love to see a tutorial on adding bag handles, linings, zippers...Thanks so much!
Yes me too! Would love to see how you fashion a handle out of the rope
What needle size should be used as not mentioned in your video. What weight thread s/b used (e.g., 40wt, 50wt, etc.)? Have you tried dyeing the cording, then stitch with matching/contrasting thread? Can you show in future video how to make ‘open’ handles; would you just not stitch for several inches for opening then continue with basket?
Hey Sandy! I used OMNI V for this video, which is a 40 wt. polyester thread that requires a 90/14 needle. I have not tried dyeing the cording, but I do like to do some natural dyes on fabric, maybe I'll throw some cording in next time! Another video with more options is in the works so make sure you hit the notification bell so you 'll know when it gets posted.
You are a natural teacher. Great tutorial on something i have always wanted to do! You have a new subscriber:) thank you!
I loved the video. Very concise and thorough. Could you please tell me what size needle you use for these projects.
Awesome tutorial with variety of examples, love all your videos; Suggest some more up close views of your other bowls you made and stitching. Stitching views you may want to shoot from right back side.
Great job. Thanks for sharing! But I need to add that your ring is astonishingly beautiful, so simple and the color is so so pretty. I really needed to make an effort to concentrate on your work...
Hello! Another great video! I have had a day where I have been running around doing a bunch of errands and didn't stitch all day so now I'm hand quilting and watching. I hope you have a joyful week ahead. Thank you for posting this video and your creativity.
Do you use a specific size needle?
Linda, I used a 90/14 needle since that is what the thread (OMNI V) recommends.
Thank you for all the tips, especially on the types of rope. And the beginning cross stitches to hold the base securely.
Such a clever way of getting color in to the project. The variegated thread looks pretty. Without adding an extra step to the project. Thank you for a easy video to follow.👍🏼
I tried to see if someone else had asked this question, and I could not find it. I was wondering how you do the very steep sided bowls. Whenever I try to do that it’s just such a gradual build of the side. I want to make some small bowls and they always seem to get too big and too wide. I ordered one of your lovely variegated threads, and it worked so well I plan to order some more. I had bought some other variegated thread at Joann fabrics, but it doesn’t seem to stitch as well, especially through the thick, wrapped cord.
Same question! Same thing happens when I make smaller bowls
Upon doing much research, I figured out it has to do with the head of the machine. If you have a large chunk of your sewing machine to the left of where your needle goes and then you will not be able to make a very straight sided bowl. it helps to tip up the bowl as you make it and sort of tug on the rope as you feed it in, but it doesn’t make a ton of difference.
I've been wanting to make a bowl/basket for a while now. I've crocheted them but I don't do that anymore. I've made pine needle baskets but that would take a bazillion pine needles and countless hours! What type are you using in this project? Or what would you recommend for a durable yet easy to work with rope to work with? My entire house would be filled with bowls and baskets of I could get my hands on the right stuff!!
You mention that a messy workspace is the sign of a creative woman just as I was saying to myself, wow she’s so neat! You should see my sewing room. ☺️
In first starting a new bowl, when locking down that first circle/coil, could you do a simple starburst with 8 points vs using a zigzag stitch?
I am new to your channel and some things I am noticing might have a simple explanation and I am simply not familiar with it. So sorry. Do you know what the clunk noise is that occurs with your machine? Love love love the cabinet and set up behind you. FanTAStic tutorial!
Loved the tutorial! I'm sure you are making it easier than it looks....at least for me. Sewing on an angle looks tricky. My bowl will probably be a little wonky. However, I have some great ideas for handles, so there's that. Thank you!
I love the way the coaster turned out with the fabric!
I used to make these many years ago and even have an incompleted bowl from 10 years ago that I will go and find to complete. Thanks for the inspiration.
Hi again! I just wanted to say I loved your addition of MUSIC, combined with Fast Fwd, during the (redundancy)! You just make really...nice...(maker-)videos! You seem so relaxed/calm (like friends getting together!), and you have the experience b4 doing the teaching, so that you know what's important to point out, from what you've learned! ...that makes a great tutorial👍😉. The bowls are pretty! Love the variations, inc. thread-play: ) Thanks for the tips on the diff. ropes (I see others commented on it, too) -- you pass-on so much wisdom.....God bless your work, and *keep-on playing*!
Good tutorial! Thanks so much! What size needle are you using? Can you estimate how much rope is needed for coasters and various size bowls?
Gloria, I use what ever size needle my thread recommends. In the video I was stitching with OMNI V and that requires a 90/14. You can probably guesstimate how much rope you need but I always seem to have more than I need. If I run short it is super easy to splice and keep going so you can always get more.
@@amydomke4141 Amy! So you do your own videos too?
Amy, My first video with you! I am going to try these for Christmas gifts. Thank you so much.
Hi Amy,
I like the tutorial on the bowls!! What model is your Janome New Home? I have done your last method before, so I am excited to try the easy way!!! Thanks Judy
I have wanted to do this for so long. Thank you for such a great video. Where is the best place to purchase the cotton? I purchased mine at a large box store in paid almost $8 for 100 yd and I wasn't sure if that was a good deal or not I'm in a small area.
Great video, explained the various steps so they were easy to understand. I too would like to have your best guesstimate on how much rope is needed for various projects. Thanks!
See my reply above about how much rope you need. So glad you liked the video!
What size and type needle are you using?
Hello Molly, I used a 90/14 needle since that is what the thread (OMNI V) recommends.
I enjoyed watching this, you are real!! Thanks.
These are very beautiful. Some helpful information would be how much rope is needed for a coaster or certain size bowl. I have made these crocheting the rope together and it uses a LOT of rope making them quite expensive to make.
Marcia, I have never actually measured, I can make a nice size bowl out of one bundle of rope so I've never actually tracked how much it takes. I'm one of those that over buys and then builds my stash. :)
Hi, Amy. I really enjoyed learning from your demo. I do have one question.....what size needle are you using for this .... a denim needle, a quilting needle, what size? (By the way, like you, I also enjoy the look of the wrapped clothesline with the "edges" fraying a bit now and then.)
Sharon Jones
You can chrochet a basket from the macrame cord ( the large spool from your daughter), the chrochet will give it enough sturdiness and structure 💖
It would be so awesome if you had a little camera above the needle (not on moving part) so we could see closer! Great video!
I LOVE the bloopers at the end - even those of us sewing for years make mistakes and have gaffs! Great tutorial :)
Great Tutorial. I have wanted to make some rope bowel and baskets. The one question I have is, The rope you are using can it be died or does it come in colors. Thanks Barb
Thought: The loose macrame cord may be a good candidate if it is wrapped with fabric. May I ask what size needle
Oh that is a good point actually! Thanks!
Great tutorial.
I like to wrap it all first and use my presser foot to hold the wrapped cording as I go..an extra hand ✋
Great tip Carol!
I also wondered what size needle you used? 100 ! Nice demo💥
Thanks Glenda! I was using OMNI V thread which requires a 90/14 needle.
Me too! What needle size & foot? What cord did you choose for this bowl?
Great video, thank you! So what stitch length and width did you use?
I start out with the stitch length and width that I think will look good and after I stitch the small start circle I look and see if I need to make any changes. It really is not noticeable since its in the bottom of the bowl. Depending on the look I want the length and width will vary. However, you need it wide enough to catch both sides of the rope.
Love this tutorial!!! Have had this on my bucket list for a long while…hmmm. Maybe it’s time!?!?! 😊
I enjoyed your video, thanks Amy, Finley and Olaf 😁 The coasters and bowls look good with that multi colour Superior thread! 💖 I appreciated that you trimmed your threads as you went along. Just a suggestion for the close ups hold it 5 seconds or longer. Thanks again for sharing! 💗🍁
TFS! I have bought a couple of handmade bowls and want to try this, but not able to find good cord. Where do you get your cord from? Thank you. 🇨🇦
I found some good cord ( clothes line ) at Dollarama.
Thank you so much for this wonderful tutorial! Your explanation of this method was so easy to understand, and I can’t wait to try it!
Have you tried dyeing rope? What size rope (so it fits under machine foot), thread weight, needle size/type (jeans, topstitch etc) do you recommend? To reduce fraying, think batik fabrics would work? Does it matter if fabric is cut on bias or straight cut? Would definitely like to see how you add handles.
Very good instruction in rope bowl stitching-thanks for sharing!
I would like to know about your thread/ cone holder next to your machine. Is it just for your Janome?
First time watching. Learning to make rope bowls . Enjoy watching you.
Would you give links to the rope or cord you liked? I constantly go down a rabbit hole searching for cords and rope wasting a lot of money and time. Thank you! And thank you for doing the video, and sharing you esperience and knowledge.
Hi, did try making rope bowl but the right side zig zag stitch didn't catch the bobbin thread. Do u have any idea how to solve this problem. TIA
Love these! I tried making one but my machine kept missing stitches! What settings do you have your machine at, and what type of needle do you use? Thank you!
I love that you made mistakes as you went along and showed how to fix them.
Hello! Would a Necchi 575FA be sturdy enough to make a rope bowl? Thanks
Fabric wrapping looks like a good stash buster!
That is a awesome instructions on how to make a rope bowl. You have answered so many of my questions. I feel I am ready to make my rope bowl thanks to you.😊🙃
If you could just put the camera by the sewing machine would’ve been great I need to visualize to be able to learn but thank you ❤
I like the table stand holder you have for your cone thread. What is it called and how do I purchase one? I like that you are using variegated thread as well. Thank you!
Excellent lesson.. love it. Always wanted to make place mats. Thanks.
The crunching noise from your table is distracting! Any way to prevent that?
If you could only place your camera on the top.....we would see much better, instead of your hand!
What size are your coasters? What width and stitch length do you use for these projects? Thanks!
So, if I wanted to do a trivet, I'd just keep doing rounds like a coaster until I got the right size?
Amy, that was an excellent instructional video. Thanks so much for that!
Could you wrap the flimsy rope from your daughter with the fabric strips for stability and use it?
Amy I am trying to make the cylinder shape that goes straight but not getting the result, please help as I saw one tall one at the beginning of your video.
Great video! I appreciate the demo on adding fabric as it is something I have done but with mixed results. Thank you!
So I was thinking about buying a jelly roll but feared I would not get the product
A closeup of your actual stitching would be helpful. Camera is too far away
Where did you buy the cord from??? Just stumbled on this channel.
Great video! What size needle do you use for sewing the bowls? TIA
Great video! What machine are you using please?
This is interesting. It would be fun to try. What is the thing you have your thread on? I notice you're using a separate thing for the thread to your machine to be on and I've never seen anything like it before I didn't know there was even such a thing. What a great invention. You're rope containers are great!
She is using a thread stand for cones made by Superior. I've been using one for years and I like it better than the ones with the round base and tall metal rod that keeps coming out of the other one I have.
I think if the camera is behind you I can see what you’re doing better then from the side angle.
I’ve never thought of making one not wrapping the cord, so have to give this a try!
Thx for the help but all that’s seen are your lovely hands😮. Not a very good angle at all😫
Are you using 100% cotton thread?
Could you wrap the loose rope with fabric?
Thank you! I just made my first 3 bowls for a gift. Am I correct that in order to get the bowl sides to be more up and down straight (like your plant bowl) and not ovalish the bottom needs to be larger than the side of your machine?
Hope that makes sense?
What needle should you use?
Patricia, I used a 90/14 needle since that is what the thread (OMNI V) recommends.
Are you near the lake Superior region? I live in Duluth.
Where do you buy your cotton and cotton/poly-wrapped rope from?
Diana, I have ordered it on line, bought in large box stores, hardware stores and craft stores. Prices are all very similar.
What size rope are you using in this video? I used the 3/16 and my basket is floppy.. it looks good just not holding its shape lol
can the cotton wrapped poly be dyed? thanks!
Where are the best places to buy the colored cotton rope for the bowls
I have become obsessed (I’m just a beginner) with coiling. I have 100’ of 1/4” jute…sigh…will this work out okay? Thanks for sharing, you’re a great teacher.
Thank you. Great tutorial.
What size needle and thread please? I’ve been told BRAIDED rope is good? Haven’t tried. You’re a great teacher. Thank you. This reminds me of the jellyroll rugs. I’ve made a few of them. Must try the bowls
Hi Amy.. Love your video. I have never made rope bowls before, always wanted to, but never got around to actually doing it. I have decided to give it a try after watching your video. I wanted to ask you if you are familiar with "Brothread" brand variegated polyester threads? They are much less expensive than Omni thread. However, I surely won't spend the money on a product if it is of lesser quality. Thank you :-D
LOVE THIS DEMO. PLEASE INFORM US ON WHERE TO PURCHASE THE ROPE..
I have ordered it on line, bought in large box stores, hardware stores and craft stores. Prices are all very similar.
Hello could you tell me the details of the thread you used ,pls?
This is my first visit to your channel. How refreshing you are 😊. I had No idea that making a basket from the beginning took so much detail that you made look like it is no big deal 😂
I have a ❓. I made a Crochet baby blanket for my Grandson.....I have yet to give it to him. I have a lot of medical problems.
My question is; how can I make your method for the Wrong Side of the Blanket in a rectangle?
Appreciate any help you can offer.
May God Bless You and Your's, Barbara 🙏🦋
Grey thread is a neutral colour. 🇨🇦
I’ve been watching so many of this videos, but yours did a great job of explaining the different types of rope! Would hate to have my first project not be useable. THANK YOU!
Fantastic tutorial! Thank you! Just wondering what type of macrame cord you used? The size and where you purchased from? All the types I've seen online look like it wouldn't hold together and was like the larger spool you showed that you got from your daughter.
Very clearly explained Amy. Your creativity is inspiring. I'm heading out to buy some macrame rope to have a go myself. Thank you!
Lovely... I made a good-sized fabric covered bowl g or granddaughter and filled it with rubber duckies@ it was really cute. Added bath things to it, too.
This was great, thanks!
Great video - and info. FYI I have used the twisted macrame rope and is a "funky' bowl for sure, but does do OK coasters and place mats. I wonder how it would work with fabric - hmnmmm - might have to try that I guess :) Keep up the great work - isn't it fun :)
