    We actually had this exact thing as an assignment when I was taking a college fine art class. It was called a “master copy” and the goal was to try to copy a drawing from a master artist as closely as possible. It ended up being a super useful exercise it’s also much harder than it sounds.

    Its okay to share work that you copied off of someone, not if you say its your work, but if you actually specify that it was a; "master study" i see nothing wrong with that.

      And sometimes never or secretly, some are clearly gives warning even with all caps or emphasized caps words to not copy theirs (signifies their madness). You shouldn't say it's your works but keep their identity anonymous otherwise they feel offended. I think there's double standard in learning art obviously. They had copied mangas to learn but don't want to be copied for people's learning. All manga classes asks you to imitate the skeleton first then hairstyles etc. And if imitating is plagiarism then why tutorial books aren't counted as plagiarism learning? I think it's all because of greed, afraid of widespread so that they can't make a living / money with art or their income reduced

    I think some cute style artists and mostly realism artists that said if copying for learning is plagiarism or anything bad are greedy (looks very obvious on realism artists' opinion, they simply don't want their job lose the profit due to widespread and lying to make it looks harder. Often realism arts are sold for really expensive price). They might or would (because they have the knowledge and experiences) know if it's a natural thing to see every art is similar to each other, it's permutation law.
    It's a common thing to see double standard in learning art. If someone had learned art from imitating favourite animes, cartoons, arts, then why did they told people to not copy their art? It's really strange, how come you can learn to draw cartoons if you're aren't allowed to imitate at first? And kawaii drawing and manga classes are basically imitating and imitating, but strangely it's doesn't count as plagiarism though you can learn it by imitating things outside the classes
    All arts are looks the same or similar if you observe carefully. If people can draw the same thing the same shape and the same anything from both learning it from not imitating or imitating, then why they consider imitating a plagiarism? Every age has its widespread art styles, today's cartoons style is CalArts style and there's nothing wrong with that and kinds like this are acceptable in Sino world (China Japan Korea). Old cartoons often have a serious art style, and like any other art styles they also have similarities to each other
    And you don't need to observe real world objects often to learn art. Just imitating, knowing the logics, proportions, volume, etc, you're fine. If learn to code is to imitate, then why imitating isn't allowed in learning art? Both goal are to be able to create the same thing for multiple purposes. That's why art copyright laws cannot copyright art styles, due to permutation law obviously if you observe
    Edit: if you want to learn to draw, it not just simply copying. You need to know the shapes skeleton of what you're copying so you can know how to draw it. Learning to draw perfect geometric shapes, lines, waves, strokes helps you to observe the anatomy / skeleton

    Hi. I made an abstract artwork and my classmates were really impressed. And my seat mate decided to copy my work. I told him that it's not good but he keeps on saying: But the shapes in mine are bigger than yours. But he did the same exact concept that I did. Draw lines, color it in, and outline the shapes. He said he was going to tell the teacher even though he was the one who did it. Thank you for this video. It made me feel better a LOT. :D

    This is super helpful and constructive advice! I personally started out copying and even tracing anime style in middle school but now more than 8 years later I am still developing as an artist but I remember my anime roots. I hope many more artist of all ages sees this and uses it in a responsible way.

    My biggest fear is being copied , I’m in the t shirt industry and have been copied before ( and have been in several groups to were people are just copying other people’s work out right without fear their damn near proud of it ) I know I could just copyright but you wouldn’t believe how many resources are telling people how to get around copy right and lazily make money off peoples work.... what would be your advice??? I think I may stop art completely I’ve been dealing with this from people for years and I’m tired of it to be honest ... no one is doing their own thing after learning just copying and pasting

    What about writing? For instance, there's something about certain shows I like that I want to be able to emulate. The way the tell stories, and so on. It's a little less clear, and while I have been able to find explanations of the writing process from some (Mike DiMartino has a few articles on the writing process for Avatar the Last Airbender and Legend of Korra, with actual examples of his premise and script for one episode) but most of them don't. I've also read Blake Snyder's Save the Cat and loads of articles on screenwriting, and I took what I could from them, but there isn't much specifically for episodic storytelling that I could find.
    I know you do comics, so do you have any advice on studying story?

    I usually copy from my favorite comic artist or the ones whose style resembles what I like to see. I have a process to this also. I do a rough sketch in vermillion then construct shapes with blue, then finish with pencil. I look at at this as essentially drawing the image three times

    I really want to learn how to draw anime characters, is copying artwork of different anime artists a good practice?

    • @CharacterDesignForge
      @CharacterDesignForge  7 років тому +10

      AnimeIsLife I'll say yes, but with a caveat. The best anime artists are really just good artists... they learned to draw realistically first, THEN they stylized their art to look anime. You need a solid foundation of construction, anatomy, form, and perspective to make any art that looks good. Anime is not excluded from that, as evidenced by the cacophony of amateur anime art online. To rise above it, practice those fundamentals. 😄

      Okay then, would drawing all kinds of body parts and even the entire body of a real life human would be a good way to solidify the foundations?
      Like drawing hands, legs, hips, top body, bottom part of the body, etc...
      Also, does it matter whether if i try drawing my own hand or a real life hand in an image? (copy a hand from a photo, for example if i google "hands" in google images and try to copy the hand from the image).

      AnimeIsLife dont just draw anime because it can hold you down

    • @HannahEnglandCreates
      @HannahEnglandCreates 7 років тому +1

      AnimeIsLife Yes, do all that :) Drawing from life is best for understanding how forms work, but using photos is also totally fine, and you'll still learn a lot. As you understand how the forms of the body work you'll be able to see how and why anime artists make certain stylistic choices and you'll be able to draw anime better than just copying your favorite anime artists. Do different angles, different poses, different body types, etc. And know that it takes time. You won't be able to do it all in a week. Stay patient with yourself. I've been drawing humans for at least 23 years and I'm still learning and loving every second of it :) Looking back on work you've done the year before can be encouraging because the improvement is more obvious over that or a longer period of time.

    Okay, so I have a problem with art styles, I always alternate based either off of mood or whatever, so I can never really draw the same character at will in the same style. I have tried to develop a specific style and decided to draw my original characters in other styles I have developed or from other styles that already exist, I can't seem to fix myself on one specific style at will unless I get some spark of motivation or inspiration for it at that moment, what do you think?

    • @HibiscusOrchid
      @HibiscusOrchid 5 років тому

      You dont need a fix style. If anything that means that youve a flexible style. Try drawing the styles of what your mood brings you to. Once youre familiarised with those styles that you can understand how theyre shape then try drawing those styles again without influenced by mood
