So, I went back to all my favorite artworks and designs and tried doing this on some of them and I am mind blown because 1) I realized that I am not as articulate as I thought I was 2) I've noticed that there so much more elements and/or details in the artwork/design than I first thought Thank you for this my mind has been blessed with something new
WOW. I absolutely love this not ONLY as a way to find inspiration but also just to take the time to appreciate art in the first place. I love art but I can honestly say I’ve never taken the time to truly focus on one piece like this before. Really blown away, so cool.
This is crucial. It's similar to how reading helps with your writing, reading and vocabulary. When breaking down art looking, breaking down and getting to the core of what you find visually interesting is as just as important as the art itself. Great video guys!
@@youlikeanh They certainly taught it at my art school. I took graphic design but switched to illustration but a large chunk of electives and even core courses were art history studying/interpreting. Even got to see some of what I studied in London and Paris that was even better. I'm glad for it too just need more time to actually do it in real life outside school!
Excellent insights. As you mentioned in the video (paraphrasing here) you cannot replicate what you don't understand. Analysis (and then replication) is an incredibly under-rated method of becoming a great designer. This is common in visual arts and in music, but for some reason, it just isn't talked about much in design. Thank you for making the video!
I was randomly searching for videos on how to price my work, and yours showed up. Your use of language, paired with a genuine sense of sincerity, caused me to become a fan. Subscribed!
I have stopped watching the futur for few months now for some reason maybe cause I'm not yet focusing on the business side and just clicked this recommended video. This reminded me why I am subscribed to you guys! Excellent content
Who is the equivalent of Chris Do for furniture making and/or architecture? Could one of you point me in the right direction. This is a super interesting video, I've been listening to Chris for a while and he always has value to give.
i love love love this idea and system. I shared it with my grad students and will share with my branding students too. Seems like a great idea for how to pair fonts as well. Thanks Chris!!!
May I request a video? Could you please make a client call scenario in which the client was found through cold calling? I would really like to learn how you talk to clients that you found not the ones that came to you. Thanks!
I like this episode, I watched it again and again. It looks easy when Chris breaking the 5 ingredients ! But I m feel so hard when I'm tried to break down an artwork ingredients. LOL
this was really helpful. I do something similar myself but it's nice to have a more structured approach, especially one that you can reference to other people. Also i thought throughout the video Chris is having so much fun talking about the stuff his son picked up on and then he goes full asian parent mode and gives him a C- xD I love it
"not straight and different thicknesses"... If i had to guess this guy uses illustrator a lot. Lol it's very interesting to hear the interpretations and expressions of what they see.
That was a pretty awesome first try from his son. I think it would be very very weird that a kid of his age would be able to get something that close to a Basquiat
Hi Chris! I’m not an art student but I watched the full whiteboard session when it was released and loved it. I also watched this and love how you break things down. Question, can the 5 ingredients be used to break down things in other aspects of life or is it just about art?
Your son is lucky to have a teacher like yourself. Great stuff Chris!
Thank you. I feel the same as a dad. I’m lucky to have him.
The guy gave his son a C-, his heart is like that painting. Dead on the inside.

this is exactly how my art teacher taught me. breaking things down to elements
Tools are so important! Just having the right tool can make the world of a difference in your outcome.
Yes it can.

suprising they don't teach these things in art school, or companies training junior designers

it takes some practice and guidance to get it but at least you are applying what you learned. that's the best way to master something.
The painting by Jean-Michel Basquiat inspired by a Muhammad Ali boxing match sold at Sotheby’s in New York for $10.9 million.
Wow
It's a detail but i believe the T in Basquiat is muted. Great video !
Is that right?
Been thinking about this a lot, thanks for your take on this👍

In the cooking world this is called "mise in place".. A French term that means everything in its place..
Good term

The descriptions of the first guy frustrated me so much 😅 just describe what you see!!! No need to get philosophical.
It is part of the learning process.
Tell me what you see "TRASH". LOL
The video and the channel are good. The "art" presented is total garbage.
