- VR and XR GameDev is one of the hottest emerging jobs on the planet, but how do you get into it? What headset should I buy? What apps do I need to download? And what skills do I need to start coding for VR games?
Hey, devs! This kind of industry requires a TON of hardware, software, and skills, so why not make a video about what is required to at least start VR game dev. Regarding the skills, you don't need to be an expert in these areas (or any of them). Just learn enough to be competent. You'll figure out what you're interested in along the way. Let me know where you're at in your VR journey! Just starting? Already know some 3D game development? Come hang out in the comments!!

Hows it going
This is extremely informative. I don't know if I will be making any titles myself, but I enjoy expanding my understanding of what is involved. Also your lighting and backdrop are super high quality.
Thanks!! Really appreciate you
Hey Justin, thanks for making this great intro guide. I think your point about not getting stuck in a tutorial rabbit hole is super important. I've fallen into that trap a few times myself and it's not so easy to clamber out of there sometimes. Super important advice for any real beginners out there!
Thanks alot martin, I had similar problem learning solidity(Blockchain) and I can't lie I'm giving up on that. Looking to see if I can gather some interest on AR & VR
Your excitement for me was enough to get me to hit subscribe. Appreciate the enthusiasm and motivational tone ✊
you really answered everything I had in mind. You were absolutely right when you said at the beginning that you have to have that first VR experience and you were absolutely right!! I had mine not long ago and since then I was deeply mesmerized. besides finally getting excepted into CS major now I have the courage to actually work toward it and your video helped me with clarity. Great video Great script and explanations. Looking forward to your content!
Thanks so much! Best of luck to you!
I already have an 8 person team helping me develop my very first vr game, I even have a whole discord community for it!

@@HellSpawnRulerOfHell Oh absolutely!
I'd also like to note that using Oculus Link (you don't even need the official cable, or any cable at all if you instead use Air Link), the Quest 2 can run all Rift apps and do all, well, Rift things.
This is why many advise staying away from the Rift S, as the Quest 2 is technically a superior headset (aside from comfort which can be remedied with aftermarket accessories if it bothers you) at the same price that does all of the same stuff.
Anyway, great video, more devs is really what VR needs right now
Also, I see that Shark shirt, fellow gym bro! ;)
can you use oculus developer
Thank you for this video. This would literally be my dream. I am a little overwhelmed by the immense amount of skills you need but I am going to take 1 thing at a time and get it done!
I'm just discovered your channel too. I'm about to begin my VR development career. I worked in unity for basic ar apps. this video is just perfect for me. thank you for all. I hope I can update this comment after several months like "man I did it, I made kinda good VR game"
That's awesome! Welcome aboard!
I’m just getting int game development and I’m learning unity by making an FPS so I’m glad you recommended it so I don’t feel like I’m wasting effort. Love your stuff dude
oh you're for sure doing it the right way! VR just complicates things on a who other level lol. And thanks so much for the praise!!

Thank you so much for creating this video. I have been looking for this kind of explanation for months. Now I'm going to become VR Developer soon!
Much respect, Much Love from Pakistan ❤
I have a hunch, dude. This channel's gonna hit the stratosphere soon. Keep geeking out, man! 🚀🤓
This video is exactly what I was looking for. Been a developer for years and have wanted to dabble in hobby game and VR development but was a little confused where the best place to start was.
Such useful information! Never seen someone share so many resources in a single video! Can't wait to explore your channel.
You’re welcome!! Hope you find the other videos useful too!
Thnx man your video is amazing
Ive had this idea in mind for a battlefield style game, but each squad has radios and proximity chat. The game would be in a pastel low poly style for personality, performance, and ease of development. Imagine those chaotic final stand moments with your freinds in VR. Standing against an army with tanks, planes, helecopters, defensing the objective with everything you have left
Imagine cod ❤
I have been working with unity for 2 years now, Almost done with my undergrad. Now I'm planning to be a VR developer full time. This is the first video I am watching about VR.
Best of luck to you!

Great video! Thanks for sharing your experience and those web sites to look for materials and tutorials.
And thanks for the tips.
You’re welcome!
Thanks, Justin. Subscribed to your channel already.
I just discovered you channel Justin, and its amazing... It has been a pleasure to learn with you. I am jumping into VR development and I am very confused about all the tool available for VR development and how these pieces work together, so I would like to suggest a video explaining all these componentes and frameworks for Unity. Open XR, SteamVR, XR Management, VR Interaction Framework and so on...
Ooo that’s a great idea José!
Detailed and clear, I like your tutorial so I bought a headset with your referral link
This was the perfect introduction, thank you. Headset ordered and ready to dive in 🙌❤️
Exciting days ahead!
I am just so glad that I found this channel next month I will be getting my gaming laptop and enjoying quest after that I will be making some games boiii let's gooo!

Thanks bro , first thing I recognize for being newbie are have teacher who can explain thing in simple way and you did it. 👍🏻
So nice of you
Great roadmap, pretty much sounds like the narration we receive from our best friend who teaches before exam, more understandable than the professor himself😆
just what I needed to start
Thanks a lot.. I recently learned about vr development and you described it so nicely ❤️.
Glad it was helpful! You're so welcome 🙂
yay! thank you for all this great info. I’ve been tempted by the oculus lately, but keep putting off buying it. But I love educational and travel content. I’m working on a physical 3d model and would LOVE to take it VR. It would still be manual (especially now that I know you can use your hands on oculus instead of the controllers), but next level. This video inspires me to give it a go. Thanks!
Best of luck!
Im in college for software engineering right now and I cannot wait to join a VR dev team
Really liked this video, I enjoyed your transparency. This feels like how I learn blockchain development. Thank you for the resources and the knowledge! Def going to get into vr and ar development

Love your videos, nice work. Keep on!!!!

I am specifically excited about UI/UX design for virtual reality. I'm very comfortable with coding like yourself and don't necessarily want to work with design applications but I'm fascinated by user experience challenges in VR. I'm also familiar with C#, but with mainly with typescript and web tech. Do you think I could skip some steps and jump pretty quick into throwing together assets to develop UX flows with unity and build some kind of portfolio? That is, without going down an FPS path first.
That's the kind of stuff that gets me super excited! I'd definitely recommend adding some cool VR UI/UX stuff to a portfolio. There are tons of XR designer positions opening up right now.
Imagine Figma on steriods and they help designers for vr. I feel like that will happen in 2-3 years.

Love your enthusiasm. Awesome video!
Quick Question, Whats your opinion on the unity asset VRIF for getting started with VR Game development?
Thanks so much!! I think VRIF is an amazing starting point, especially if you're just getting into VR. I'd definitely recommend using that to dive into the source code and quickly figure out how different VR mechanics work. One of the main issues I'd be concerned about is it being updated to whatever the current Unity XR technology is and not getting outdated.
Glad you're here!
i love vr and i dont have a headset but i want to be a vr developer when i grow up you realy answered all my Questions i love your vids
Hey Justin, I also believe VR is the future, and my dream is to create games in VR. Nice idea to start a YT channel for teaching both yourself and the audience
I am super hyped right now to learn VR Game developping. When I was a kid I always thought about how cool it would be if some games or series I watched would be real. Now that VR and stuff comes up I realized that actually playing pokemon in real life or bending elements like aang isnt that far away anymore. Damn lets go guys
Best of luck!!
It might be a year later but this is great. Thanks for the video, I’m finishing up my second year of my CS degree and I was like “idk what I even want to do” and I picked up a quest 2 and it absolutely blew me away!

GREAT TIPS :)
On here to applaud you and everyone in the comments section we need more VR anything... I want to create vr content as well.
👏
Great video. Lots of good information. I have only experienced vr in games and never did any programing. So clean slate when it comes to this stuff. Let me lay our what I want to do, on a steep budget. Create a simple space that is a sphere shape, that a therapist is outside of but can see the controls for rgb color brightness, flicker or not flicker & control of ischronuc sound and binaural beats plus ambient music for a person sitting inside the sphere who will witness this in a 360 experience. How doable is this? How advanced do I need to be to create something like this and do you think there is a no code program that I could build this?
Enjoyed the video. Thanks for the content. For the programming aspect of VR. What pathway should I take? Any zero to pro tracks/courses you recommend?
Brackey's UA-cam channel has a great C# programming course for game developers!
I really like his honesty about the things that he doesn't know like modeling and audio
Thanks!
Just found this GEM of a channel👍👍
Thanks!!
I'm looking to get into the art side of VR developing. Any tips on where I should start?
Great Video Justin.
Thanks!
Your video is very helpful. Thanks. I am inspired by you. As I have just started learning and starting my journey in Immersive Technology. I am quite confused about which laptop should I buy or which one should be best suited for this. I'm looking for a Mac Book Pro-M2 processor, is it worth it for AR/VR development? If not which one should I choose?
Thanks @Justin. Cool app dev tutorial! Do you have any recommendation on where to start to learn about VR headset hardware (concept and/or any possible diy enhancement)?
I'm not really familar with the hardware world 😬 best of luck to you though!
Got into VR a couple of years ago.
Started cold with PSVR, I'd never tried it, never even had a console before, not particularly interested in gaming.
But I liked 3D movies and figured I would like VR.
Like is not strong enough a word though, I loved it.
I was completely obsessed with it for the first six months and still typically spend a couple of hours a day in VR if not 5-6 2 years later.
I got an original Quest a bit over a year ago and started learning Unity a couple of months after that.
Decided to take a break from Unity after Xmas as I kept being frustrated with the online lessons jumping from basic scripting to stuff I had no idea how to do.
I have played around with a little scripting over the years out of curiosity but before VR I never found anything interesting enough to motivate me and it used to be so tedious.
I wonder if you appreciate just how much better the script editors available now make coding?
So I concentrated on 3D modelling for a while then finally got a VR capable PC a few months back after which I drowned myself in learning how to mod SkESVR, Fo4VR and modelling with the tools available for that. Haven't attempted the Creation engine software as I appear to need the pancake games to use it?
Currently having problems with Steam, might be a bug from VRChat, Steam support haven't been helpful.
Script editors are SO helpful. Best of luck on your projects!
This will be revolutionary
No doubt
@Justin P Barnett. Thanks for making this video. I'm starting my journey and wanted to know if this is the same app, skills and assets I need to learn how to create a VR/AR/MR/XR app in the Metaverse? Thanks!
Hi Justin which software would you use to create a flying through the clouds video scene for a VR headset?
Can you make a tutorial on the camera and light you use for your videos? They look amazing 🎉
Justin! From web development to VR development lol. A more fun transition. You have any games out there?
haha 100% It's SO much more fun! I haven't released any yet, but I've worked on a bowling demo-type thing and I'm currently trying to learn enough to get my idea of a stealth space game off the ground.
Thank you so much. It's a very helpful video. I'm very interested in VR, and I'm planning for applying a master project about it. Any suggestions about the college and exact project?
Just do whatever you're super interested in!
I can't see the date this video relased but are you still keeping your advice about headsets? Or let me share my personal use case; I have an iMac and iPhone; and i ran into nReal's newly relased AR glasses. So that, I don't know if it's possible to use these standalone headsets together with my apple environment or if it's quickly possible to deploy and play my own prototypes within these standalone headsets? And fairly i don't know very much about nReal's glasses even I heard about their Apple integration so what's different than standalone headsets.
Have you been able to test the resonite game engine for vr?
Does the VR headset matter relative to code development? Do you program the same way for all VR headsets or is it specific to each headset? Are there open standards for VR program to hardware interfacing like OpenXR? Or do you just have to compile with each headset SDK library included?
Im looking to create an Electrical Lineman VR Game with different scenarios. I have many years of experience in both sides of Construction and Utility linework.
Setting new or replacing old power poles truck or non truck accessible, new powerline wire and electrical apparatus installation, transformer make up and wiring , trouble shooting new or existing equipment.
Underground installation, maintainance, troubleshooting and repair.
I also know some of the best Electical Lineman in the Nation that can make this happen.
Your videos have a lot of editing like the 80's Max Headroom. It did catch my attention, your resources and mine can revolutionize the Electrical Work Force.
I have worked in the IT field for 30 + years ranging from Desktop Support to Network Support to Technical Project Manager. I do not have any Development experience though and I think that I would be really good at it. I used to build web pages from scratch using HTML in the 90s before HTML editors even existed. I don't type fast and I don't know C# or C++. I LOVE VR and I want to be apart of this next big wave. What would be your advice? Thanks!
I am going to start teaching myself coding for remote employment options in general for software development. What is a good language to start in that would benefit me in VR game development.

Great video! I got a cheap VR headset for android in 2014 using my phone. It was cool but no games at the time. Just experiences on google play store. Quickly learned some Unity, and the controls for VR were so easy to use. In 6 months released my first game on android and made money on it. I made the first Duck Shoot VR game, last update should be 2015. Haven't messed with Unity or game making since, but just got a Quest 2 and will be watching these video.

What would you recommend for building a web based application? Not a game, but kind of like a streaming app. Does unity have a wrapper that can encase a web browser?
Streaming for VR? That sounds fun. You'll have to build for WebGL
