What EV Start-Up Rivian Is Doing That Tesla Isn't - Наука та технологія
Tesla will always have the first-mover advantage, but competition is always a good thing.
For the consumers"😈
Competition sucks, domination you need
@@guatf1 competition is the best for consumers, otherwise you will get stuck with the same shite over and over, like apple.
@@yagovips dont know where you live but here in Europe there are more tec companies then just Apple, so atleast over here they are not dominating the market
In this day and age, being first means nothing. We are not loyal to any brand
Media starting wars between two parties. Elon is probs happy to see more EVs
Definitely is. Not probably
nope, Elon Musk isn't happy to see more EVs that'll potentially outsell his cars (this is the same guy that sued a few car reviewers because they give his car a bad score, he was suing for loss in sales)...
It's always funny when dimwits try to pretend like they're real people.
That's cool but this is a business channel so they should look at market competition and compare.
Corbin Hardy Yeah really great to have cars that damage the world more than regular combustion engines

I’m so sick of hearing things like “Tesla’s worst nightmare” when Elon has openly said that he wants more competition. These journalists just straight up lie to make a headline. Smh

He said they will not get ALL the free press, Rivian will get some of it. Wording matters. Don't think you are any better than the "bloke".
@@alsayedjalal Plastic people just don't get 'iron y'
@@alsayedjalal Yes, thank you. Listen, people who continue to say things like, "Tesla killer" don't understand that the only thing being killed with these new EV concepts are the ICE vehicles. There's no need to be against Tesla as a company because, in my opinion, they're doing what needs to be done.
Shawn Morrow tesla really outgrew the stage where they could get 'killed' by someone.
Now they only can have competition which is a great thing.
The reality is though Tesla is far ahead in the ev business and it will be extremely hard for anyone, especially startups, to catch up to them. Which is a bit frustrating because at this point no one will try to compete with them from scratch, which shrinks the competition.
Evs are getting closer to being ice cars killers fast though.
What Tesla has done is somehow still underrated. When Rivian gets to high volume production you can start comparing them to Tesla.
Tesla is behind on their production severely, especially when the model 3 was announced. Also losing money daily last I heard and had to work 24s a day to even begin to make a dent in their orders.
After bashing Tesla for failing to meet production goals for years, these folks suddenly put on the pompoms for a startup that has never gone in to production.
I have to wonder if they simply hate companies that produce vehicles or if they just really hate electric vehicles. I wonder if they want this world to burn.
Agree
@Ben Ghazi BI, not you. Thus far your comment a simple fact that tesla has not made production to a large scale. That is true and it has us all upset.
@@FEARbraveheart Well Tesla is growing faster than anyone else doubling every year and you are not impressed?! This year they are building and starting a new factory in Shanghai. Within one year!
Toyota, VW and GM are big now, but how long time did it take and for how long will they stay when the world shifts to electric?
Rivian: Blah blah blah
Elon: Here is your CYBERTRUCK. Order now.
I can tell you invested in tesla... me too
Doesn't matter if the stock is up or down,
Tesla CYBERTRUCK is currently the talk of the town 😜

The Rivian looks like it was had a ton of R&D by guys who actually drive and use trucks. The Tesla looks like a 5 year old designed it in 1985, then non truck guys said “That will do”.
@@craiganderson8569 10 years and no product? lmfao
look I'm not going to argue if Rivian or Cyberstuck is what people want,
The truth is No matter how what rivian can never mass produce EV while Tesla can.
If you like me to explain to you why no one can touch EV mass production let me know and I will explain to you and it has nothing to do with design.
"What Rivian is doing that Tesla isn't"
Making 0 cars.
Making a truck that actually looks like a truck.
@@juice12222 What YOU think a truck should look like* Often times, simple minded people fear innovation.
@Cbeddoe19 Why you so bitter? Why do you think everyone needs to confirm to your way of "thinking" orbits wrong?
Tiny ego. Small mind. You serve no purpose.
@Cbeddoe19 No, I'm genuine. You just can't imagine a world where I believe in Musk's vision and deplorentge current state of EV's. Because again, you are lost.

@Cbeddoe19 Investment don't mean shit, real products mean something
They been a company for 10 years and no products? lol
Im not here to tell you which design is better, because honestly i have never owned a truck and never will. I will allow time to tell us which one consumer like.
Also I'm pretty sure you know why no one can compete with Tesla, or do i need to explain to you why no one will be able to churn out as many electric cars as Tesla can for the next 10 years?
Lol... "Rivian did things their own way by buying an old car factory and teaming up with a big car company."
*cough* Freemont and Daimler *cough*
Naahhhh. This is TOTALLY different.
No musk. And they acrually have a Epic product already!
O wait.....
@@mikee368 I feel like a more accurate claim would be they have an epic concept. Until there's deliveries it isn't a product.
Yeah, but Elon started making cars first, then teamed up with Daimler, then bought Freemont. Rivian so far is just making nice looking prototypes, and bought the factory before teaming up. See how very different that is? Because Rivian is just that innovative.
Seriously, I like the things Rivian is showing, I hope they make it. I think they just need another, maybe, ten billion dollars to have a real shot. Hey, investors have burned fourteen billion on the worthless roadkill called Uber, maybe they have more money to gamble with?
@@iMeatbag i was sarcastic. Hoped that was obvious the way I worded it al Haha.
But yhea they have a amazing concept product that can maybe go in to production. And depending on how fast they scale they need X billion more to go. Their startup of production will also most likely be somewhat cheaper than Tesla's because some stuff already got cheaper over the time that is between them.
But for a real shot I agree they need 10+ billion so they can jump up in production asap.
@@mikee368 I kind of thought so but I didn't want to assume anything and then have some misunderstanding to sort out.
I think another reason they should have an easier time in production because they don't seem to be offering multiply models of the same vehicle like Tesla did. That will simplify assembly.
That's likely a very low estimate once the problems start happening.
Not a Tesla killer. A Tesla competitor. Exactly what Elon wants
& the losers: the oil companies. Suck it Koch brothers!
FEARbraveheart You’re obviously not bright, but even a dim bulb should understand that contemporary oil and gas companies are really energy companies who just happen to deal in oil and gas. Make no mistake, Exxon will exist, perhaps even rebadged, one hundred years from now. But they will remain. The capital required says so.
Your political ideology is making you daft.
mtb416 You’re obviously not bright, but even a dim bulb should understand that a growing EV market cuts into the profits of those oil firms.
& Yes, I am aware that Exxon traces its origins from the trust-busts of the 1900's. Although I sense you need some pretext to be a condescending little twat. So, thanks for the most cringe-worthy history lesson ever.
the truck has to be made first.. with no battery factory and not enough money to buy production equipment.. I wouldn't hold your breath. With the uni-body design which all other companies have tried and failed miserably for a truck that needs to twist under loads..would need an engineering marvel that no other engineering team in the world currently can do.
FEARbraveheart So your argument rests on the idea that the batteries inside EVs magically charge themselves? Exxon remains, only the margins change, as fossil fuels’ energy density allows for it, whereas green energy is still inefficient AF.
My entire argument is that” big oil” is really “big energy” and it is they who will build the future infrastructure necessary to allow for a changeover (which is still a long, long way off by your standards, I bet). This infrastructure will charge your make believe Rivian truck which hasn’t even come close to hitting the market.

Tesla won’t be effected by Rivian because Tesla actually has production cars
@Red Divinity The loss is due to aggressive expansion/research not that EVs arent profitable.
@@madman3891 that's his point
@Red Divinity Hey glad we could continue the convo. " sell Millions of Units for the Company and it hasn't even sold 500k. " The goal for the Model 3 was to increase production to 10k per week and the vehicle is only counted as sold once it has been delivered. Tesla reached that production goal and so far they've produced 430K since the first deliveries in Q4 2018. I doubt you meant millions sold in the first year but they'll easily reach the million number by early next year if not by the end of this year.
"what happened with the big TESLA Semi truck that was announced? Only crickets chirping on that front" I understand you may not interested in news about the semi but during the unveiling they announced production would start 2019, they started making the light version at the Nevada factory and even used it to make model 3 deliveries. The long hauler production will start next year. So not crickets and chirping, you're just not interested enough to look for the info.
"Elon Must not be "aggressive" enough to get that Semi to market hey?" Not sure about Elon i don't know him personally but so far Tesla has kept up with all the goals based on announcements.
"TESLA is also now Solar City too, how are those solar panel sales coming along lol" Technically Solar City is part of Tesla not the other way around but I don't know the numbers however they lowered the prices 16% below national average so they probably at a low loss. So after all of this you previously stated that an all EV manufacturer cannot be profitable would be incorrect with just one profitable Q which Tesla has done, so technically you're incorrect. Great convo so far let me know if you have any more questions.
@Red Divinity That's funny. Tesla has been "dying" since it's inception. and yet Detroit 3 continues losing ground worldwide.

Indeed. Tesla founded July 2003. Roadster unveiled July 2006. 1st Production February 2008. Volume production of 2009-2010. That was a span of 7 years.
Meanwhile, Rivian was in stealth mode for 10 years and still has no production.
I should add that the Tesla Model S was announced in March 2009, only 6 years after company inception, and full volume production of the car in 2012-2013. So 10 years after the company was founded, there was a full production line for the Model S.

@@djhokage1 they have battery patents that tesla doesn't for starters, for batteries a generation past tesla's. tesla really can't change out powertrains at this point. they're stuck with what they have. anyone who comes out with the new and better thing in this era can swing markets drastically. also, they are making vehicles for the segments that are growing, not the segments people are fleeing from. look what the major companies are doing in the USA with their sedan models... the tax landscape is quickly changing, especially for tesla. a large portion of tesla's "revenues" are carbon credits taken from the real car companies, nevada and california taxpayers are tied up in their factories, the buyer credits are drying up, and there is no return on investment on the horizon except for speculation and emotion. they're bleeding money like there's no tomorrow. i wouldn't classify tesla as an established business by normal business standards, although they are selling cars. rivian is really only focused on their skateboard that other makers can design bodies for, like the old coach builders used to buy chassis and drivetrain for, and the rivian business model could be much more fundamentally sound.
Like the clever storage areas - especially the width ways storage for skis/snowboards/tent poles. Besides from the fact that they are electric, there is a lot of innovation going on with the design that is why more out of the box than what we are used to seeing.

@@mattlane2282 Insulting someone with ad hominems doesn’t mean you’re correct. An example of a single automobile manufacturer, Ford, discontinuing their Sedan product lines is irrelevant. There are dozens of automobile manufacturers that continue to offer Sedans, which means people continue to buy them. Most Car sales are SUVs, but Sedans represent a fair amount of Cars being sold. The Model X offers 5,000 pounds on 20” wheels or 3,500 pounds on 22” wheels. The vehicle has towed airplanes, rail cars, and a semi-truck, but only for short distances. A normal person wouldn't need to tow something that is as heavy as one of the products previously mentioned. A Gasoline vehicle would lose Gas the same way an Electric vehicle would lose charge from towing. There are many companies that use different HyperLoop designs. The Boring Company decided to make the HyperLoop in California a paved tunnel because it works, but that doesn't mean that other designs will also be a paved tunnel.
So hype for these guys! the truck looks like a dream and i so want one when they come out , but i hear its gonna start at like 70k USD, which is some people's entire salary. A lot of people forget that GM actually made a production electric car back in the 90s called the EV1 which had a max range of 160mi. but they only leased them and then took them all back and scrapped the entire thing in '02. good to see battery technology has come a long way and now they are viable again.
The whole idea of Rivian focusing on a small niche is to do with several factors.
Firstly there's nothing in that niche right now so if they can get a toe in there they can then expand it and make it a larger space
Secondly if Rivian makes a desirable car as they're doing then people will want to buy it. They will see these cars as an alternative to Ford and GM as they're different, new and desirable.
Finally the niche idea doesn't really make a whole lot of sense. Not everyone buys a car for the exact purpose that the manufacturer states. Take Land Rover for example. Chances are their extremely off road capable cars such as the Discovery will hardly ever see a proper off-road challenge. Most of the time it will be smooth roads with maybe an occasional drive across a field. So people will buy these cars not just for their off-road ability but because it's just a very good car.

Tesla founded July 2003. Roadster unveiled July 2006. 1st Production February 2008. Volume production of 2009-2010. That was a span of 7 years.
Meanwhile, Rivian was in stealth mode for 10 years and still has no production. Come on Rivian, get in the game.
Rivian looks to be the real deal. Exciting for the EV space, it needs another boost to get more mainstream uptake. This is a win-win for both Tesla and Rivian.
"When Tesla made the roadster its already been done, people want more SUVs and pickups"
Elon: _fine_
Elon : yare yare. I can't fully folly own the EV market without them
I hope they succeed, the world needs more of these.
BI is owned by bezos that also owns part of rivian
Tbh I would rather have this over the cybertruck
Kev Man456 me too. the steering wheel looks like a real steering wheel. the interior actually doesnt look as plaine...i mean i prolly never ever own am ev buuuut if i had to choose im takingn this over any tesla lol
@@412hwc the rivian does look like it's for bisexuals
Quick question: will they have the charging network to get to the off roading ? If so I'm in :)
Oh boy... their pickup is $20k more expensive.
But I want them to succeed too!
The move away from gasoline & diesel fuels is what this all about. Providing reliable & durable options for consumers is the bottom line of profit.
if the world gave a sh*t about crude oil usage they would also stop flying and upgrading their cell phone on a yearly basis. new york city alone uses over 1 billion gallons of oil each winter keeping itself warm. the last time i checked cities are growing, not dwindling. there are plenty of articles that argue how many years of lithium this world has, and as long as the world consumes oil, gasoline is ALWAYS made as a byproduct. if cars don't use it the government will just let powerplants burn it. there is no such thing as an electric world. sorry. there never will be. oil makes this world possible, no matter how many ev's u put on the road. thats just fact.
michael Lets give it 70 years and see what oil/fuel we got left and if we’ve moved to fully electrical vehicles
Meh, call me when they have something for sale and test drive like all the other EV companies touting their Vapor EV vehicles.
@Writer B.L. Alley I'm from the future and they have yet to deliver a single vehicle as of yet. And they don't plan to in 2020 whatsoever.
James C nice one lol
It always makes me laugh when people talk about Tesla killer and Tesla's worst nightmare as if big companies haven't coexisted for decades!
Elon always encouraged competition, it's a good thing for everyone.
Besides Rivian haven't even produced 1 car yet and Tesla is decades ahead of the game, even compare to the traditional car companies.
It's a huge difference between having a concept car and actually producing it for consumers.
Not to mention even if they did, Tesla is only a year or two away from releasing the very kind of off road truck they've made. If Tesla let people pre-order it today (like they did the Model 3) they would get over hundred thousand orders easily. There's ZERO chance Rivian would get 100,000 orders in a few months if they released their car TODAY.
I think Rivian has a good product but it's more focused on off-road than Tesla and there's also the matter of not having a production line yet.
The OMG World !! Or supercharger network.
Battery tech just hasn't got the legs yet. to make it a sensible choice for anyone seriously needing a proper off road vehicle.
There's enough room for multiple companies like Tesla. We already love Tesla. Tesla can't do it all for everyone. We need more companies like Rivian to step the electrical automobile industry and deliver.
Tesla:- Well, Sir, Hold my CYBERTRUCK😂
Except for the fact that if we are going based on what weve seen so far, the rivian has more function as a utility vehicle than the cybertruck. It has more room for cargo, and has an easily accessible bed from 3 sides rather than just the rear like tesla's.
@@johnkenley4687 Both have their own set of pros and cons, For example Tesla's supercharging & service network is something which Rivian doesn't have as of now...
I'll believe it when I start seeing them on the street. Until then it's just hype.
Nodak81 true so many startups never come into to production
The specs they listed are not possible, won't be on the market for 5 years I'd bet
just like everyone else. We will have more by "XX" year, it's like show it. or just shut up. lmao
*dirt
@@tyscof well it's already out while the cyber truck isn't
It will be a competition and its good for us as customer
it won't be a competition because tesla is appealing to average customers and rivian is focussing on a niche market that won't affect most people
and the price difference will be about 20k tesla being the cheaper choice
Its easy to make a compelling electric vehicle. It’s not easy to make a compelling electric vehicle affordable.
The price of an EV is heavily dependent on its battery.
What Rivian is doing that Tesla isn’t doing is ignoring vertical integration.
Tesla isn’t just an auto company. They’re a battery company. They’re an energy production company.
I agree. Scotty Kilmer of Houston Texas, the UA-cam mechanic 🚘 did a good video on Rivian. He likes the concept but questions how durable or stable the firm is for what you pay for. 🤔... I do not get why Rivian only has 2 color styles & 2 frame choices. 👎🏻. In ten+ years you only engineer 2 colors.
DL Lambert
Unless I have some impressive energy storage or motor technology up their sleeves, I fail to see how they’re going to anywhere near as disruptive as Tesla.
They’re just another automaker hopefully bringing a new EV to market, but thank goodness they’re making a go of it. I hope they succeed
HavocValour
It’s hard even to make a compelling EV. It takes time and recourses. There’s a reason many EV that have come and and still come out have dismal to mediocre range.
Smart to get established companies like Ford and Amazon to help this startup get essential experience and future charge up locations
The word "is doing" is totally unpredictable..
When you have investment from ford and amazons... Articles and video pieces of praise are expected. Tesla didnt had these luxuries and still are wayyyyy abv all
Not to mention the fact that they actually make and sell cars.
Tesla has had no shortage of media hype. Federal tax subsidies--money taken from those who couldn't afford the rich man's toy--didn't hurt either.
I’m here for it! Tesla and Rivian should collaborate too!
"Cybertruck joined the conversation"
cybertruck's a joke, rivian's going to beat out tesla in the truck game initially; the reason why people liked teslas in the first place was because they were electric cars designed in a way people would like it (unlike prius' and other electric vehicles at the time)
rhn94 I wouldn’t call it a joke when the most expensive CyberTruck will cost $77,900 while the base Rivian will start at $69,000
I'll come back once they're actually in production
PhantomEagle Same. Until I see them next to me on the freeway, it isn’t real. I’ve seen far too many companies make bold claims like this in the past, before fading into non existence and never delivering their fancy concept.
I have a feeling the Tesla pickup is gonna kill this before it enters production.
Same
The sci-go concerns me but it doesn’t have just 0-60. It also has great towing capacity.
Beautifully uncurvy! A masterpiece. I hope that doesn't change
Saw these at Overland Expo, Impressive! Hope they make it
I was excited about rivian until I found out Ford had anything to do with them
Ford's are good looking expensive junk... like most American made products.
@@sammyposton5934 and tesla is the king
They are partnered, not owned. Yes some fords are not built great but certain vehicles are made for certain tasks. No car or truck is considered junk unless it is not built properly or the owner does not maintain it properly.
I wouldn't be surprised if Ford puts ICE into Rivian truck
@@misterg4059 Correct me if I am wrong, but are you referring to Ice cubes or something else?
I think this will be Land Rover of EVs
Cant wait till this company goes public, itll be a great investment for sure. The idea that they are pairing with known auto companies will definitely bring production costs down allowing more profit for growth
I think Rivian plays it too safe to become a threat to Telsa but they could be a player in increasing the popularity of the EV industry

WOW!! Another TESLA killer... how many ev company have gone under?
Yeah, remember I remember Faraday Future being one too.
What I like about Rivian is it's a car company first. And you can tell the guys who build these cars clearly know car talk. We need THAT passion in EVs, not tech gimmicks like Tesla cause the sort of culture Rivian brings is the kind of culture that will last generations. Gadgets are fine but cars are more than gadgets or toys.
The primary source here says it all in one phrase “Tessslaaah (overemphasized pronunciation)flipped the bird to the auto industry.... and Rivian (standard pronunciation) cozied up to the industry” Big Auto doesn’t like to be dissed, apparently. So the short and distractor machine is set up to cause Tesla to falter. Business Insider has clearly taken money to be part of the detractor machine to lend credence to the short machine... meanwhile big auto retools to go ‘all in’ on the electric wave.
Great idea, lets make an electric off-road vehicle! That way when you're in the middle of nowhere you cant charge your vehicle! 😄👍
Bring along a generator and a couple dozen jerry cans of gas lol
@@hines862009 😂😂😂
With an initial range of over 400 miles (over 640km) , I think that won't be a problem most of the time.
They are really gonna have to seal the thing up well if they want to make a rugged off road vehicle
Rivan household name with electric cars, huh, and yet not one sold and no one even knows about them. Yea great journalist.
Great work Rivian I hope to see a lot more models and a long history of achieving goals from your company!
Laughs in Cybertruck
The rivian pickup is aiming squarely at the Ford raptor
Not necessarily, this truck's market is people who are into electric vehicles and consider themselves outdoorsy whereas the raptor is a off-road truck that is street legal. Most people who were looking into a Raptor won't even be thinking of this truck.
And it will fail, simply because the Rivian will only be able to get you to your camping destination. Once you arrive there, you'll find yourself out of battery and sitting at a gas station lol
@@noelmedina6925 fr.... The raptor is much more capable than the rivian would ever dream to be. The raptor is the trophy truck that's been given on-road qualities to make it barely street legal, whereas the rivian is just an electric SUV with a bed that's been given off-road qualities, just so that it can do some light off roading.
Everyone can build an electric car, what takes skill is to build many.
By the time this truck comes out team's fleet will probably sell 300Mi range cars as their minimum package and have a 400Mi self driving pickup set to launch In 8 months.
The problem with starting this late In The game is that they're likely going to be second fiddles In terms of range and performance. investments be damned.
Henry Ford made basic cars...for peoples basic needs. This is a luxury item for the wealthy.
Rivian : makes a electric truck.....
Meanwhile....
Elon musk : hold my CyberTruck...!
Rivian been around 10 years, and no product yet?! I'm loving the idea of electric truck, but get the dagnabbed thing built before I kick off. I ain't nary whippersnapper.
Well the trucks are out now so are you happy?
I Really Hope they make it.. having a single company like Tesla controlling the market themselves sucks
If it was not for Tesla, there would be no company for the electric cars market. And they are the one pushing everyone to start doing EVs.
@@Caetano.Galli.Gonzalez totally agree but that has nothing to do with what I said 😂
More than controlling the market. If EVs are going to become mainstream one small company can’t produce them all. I wish there were a hundred successful EV startups and the big auto manufacturers all went under.
And where will they get the batteries?
Same place GM buys from?? ;-) Show just how brilliant these auto execs are.
if or when they are in production? my guess is from Tesla.
This is the killer. Tesla were ridiculed for their production predictions because there was no one producing the batteries needed in sufficient numbers. This thing has a gazillion batteries in it but I've never heard anything about where they expect these to come from.
@Ben Ghazi the point is that no-one is asking this question and they aren't saying that they have deals in place. This capacity is already in great demand. Without their own secured supply of batteries the trucks simply can't be produced and sold in numbers. It's the killer question rather than blow. So why is no-one asking it when it was heavily cited as a reason Tesla would fail in the early days.
Panasonic most likely as they are the biggest. They supplied tesla
It's good for everyone when there's added competition in an industry.
I’ve seen RJ at rivian, working there is actually pretty cool and seeing him a few times is like wow
I'm honestly getting tired of hearing this idea and how it's coming soon ... We been hearing about this trucks for awhile ... It's gonna lose it hype by the time it comes out

Not surprised about this video. Ford probably paid Business Insider to make it, after their half bilion investment in Rivian.
The Ford investment ensures that Rivian doesn't upset their F-150 sales too much. The investment is just an insurance policy. Watch for Ford executives to start showing up at Rivian board meetings.
