I really enjoy how you take the time to explain why you take certain sound design decisions…

For a year or so, I've been trying to figure out how Justin Vernon created the random bells and such to accompany Ross Gay's incredible poem, Catalog of Unabashed Gratitude. Enter Eric Bowman. This tutorial -- in-depth, patient and so very educational -- made Justin's music happen. Thanks so much, Eric!

These sounds are amazing. I can't believe Vital is a free synth either.

Very helpful, Eric! I feel like Vital is one of the best synths, especially being free. Time to go get some of your sound banks. Cheers!

This is amazing; I love tutorials like this showcasing how to utilize vital in unconventional ways

it's not too unconventional though is it?? I mean you're using what's in it directly
but yeah, you wouldn't expect it to be able to do granularity until you realise that a lot of granular synths / samplers also use random starting times of envelopes such that it's not too ringy or weird in the low end, like smearing parts of it
and sine waves are easy to "smear" they're staying themselves!

Eric, this is creme de la creme. Is there a chance I can order a sound design with you? I've been trying to recreate the Terminator I drums by Brad Fiedel. With no success whatsoever...

Thank you! Thank you for being generous and sharing your Top Shelf Teaching skills. 22:40
I subscribe to VITAL and was about to dump it because [MOST of{ the factory/included-creators Presets are so Harsh and awful (again, there are some good pads) that I concluded: THIS SYNTH IS NOT A SOUNDSCAPE MACHINE…/ shame since it’s OSC and etc can sound so very ANALOG .
Most of the problem rests in my level as a synthesist (Lacking pro skills) so I tend to conclude that the factory-included presets either represent what the synth was designated to sound like OR-/where creator presets are thrown in-that I’m hearing the most
WOW-est-ness the synth can crank out -/-the most creative, the most elegant and beautiful.
    I thought: eh…not sa-much.
MAN was I wrong in this instance!

Thank you for the great tutorial.
    Can I request a sound?
    Boys Noize - Overthrow,
sound that start music video at 2:36.
I tried to copy this sound, so I looked at different presets, tuned the presets,
and looked at different tutorial videos, but I couldn't get any closer to the sound.

Thanks so much for this tutorial! Two questions (which I haven't been able to figure out for the life of me):
When I was trying to connect Macro 3 to Random 3's Oscillator 3 Transpose modulation, I couldn't get it drag and drop on the circle - i.e. the modulation circle magnification would disappear as soon as I click back on Macro 3 to drag it over.
I'm also confused about how the matrix destinations like modulation 1, 2, 3 etc work... whichever way I tried to count to figure out what each one was referring to based on the ones I already had in the matrix up to this point, I couldn't figure out which number would be the one for Random 3's Oscillator 3 Transpose modulation. I can't seem to find any answers to either of these questions on the internet, so if you have any idea what I'm missing, I'd be super grateful to hear from you!

If you hold your cursor over a group of more than 3 modulations, a popup should appear, allowing you to drop a modulator onto a modulation circle.
If you go to the modulation matrix, you can use the source/destination to see what each modulation is. You can sort by number/source/destination by clicking on those headers.
