- If you hear someone talk about an old 80s Landcruiser they all usually at some point say. "I would never hesitate to jump in that thing and drive it cross country at a blink of an eye". Sometimes when the going gets hard thats the only statement you remember and grasp on to. So with out further ado.... this is the story about being there for someone no matter what even if it means driving 1000 miles.

You're right about that view. I drove my fj62 from Tahoe to Moab without even skipping a beat. Hit all the trails and drive her home no problem. Best trucks ever built!

I did 3K in Utah heat this summer in my Fj62... heavy offroading, purred like a kitten and didn't skip a beat.
If you maintain these things well, especially the transmission, you can have a lot of peace of mind taking them anywhere you want.

Drove from seattle to banff and back a few years ago in my 84, no troubles whatsoever just a little slow on the big passes :)

I used to drive My fj62 with 3f engine for 3000 Miles trips every year. Many places where the 4 wheel drive have to be use. Never had any problems. Nowdays it is only use for short trips. However I am working in a 1fz-fe engine to do they swap I go far again
They get you there and back every single time! Never ever had a problem myself

My 84 fj60,most reliable truck I've had,the old 2f was still going strong at 660000 kms,had only had head revalved in that time due to running out of adjustment,20 years and only taken off the road due to body rusting away

In 1995 I drove my 84 Fj60 from Richmond VA to Los Angeles. In 96 I drove it back to Richmond. In 97 you guessed it, drove it back out to LA. Then from LA to Salt Lake and back in 98 and 99 respectively for Sundance. In 05 got me a 62 and drove it to Los Angeles. These were not low-mileage trucks. The only problem I had was the clutch slave blew out while in Salt Lake. As a result of these misadventures I know two things: one stock 62 is way better on a road trip and two I will never ever do it again!
Reminds me of a couple of cross country trips I did with my ‘86 FJ60. One was from NC to New Orleans to Bozeman, MT and finally to Tacoma WA when I shipped it to Oahu for a few years of fun. I unfortunately had the air pump seize up in Amarillo and overheated in the middle of June. I had it towed into town and the shop was kind enough to lend me a vehicle and were some how able to get air pump (which everyone knows are a PITA To fine and expensive) overnighted from Colorado and get me back on the road late the next day. Needless to say, but always an adventure. I should have desmoged before I took it on such a long haul…lesson learned!

@@mizeadventure9438 BTW, I have been having a super frustrating time with my 62. It's been running hot since I've owned it and I'm in the process of changing the fan clutch and radiator. If you ever decide to buy a new fan clutch get the FCT-049 from Aisin (known as the aqua) instead of the FCT-017. I spent over a thousand dollars troubleshooting and that's all it was... Random knowledge but valid.

The triangular vent-like things on the front windows.
They never made it into the us market. I had to buy them from Australia and install them. I made a entire video about it if you look back on it

Hey man you certainly seem to know your stuff when it comes to Land cruisers. If I’m in a state that doesn’t do smog checks is it smart to De-smog it to improve reliability if I’m taking it into the backwoods?
Doesn’t matter either way. If it’s running well smogged let it it be. I only do a desmog to make things simple.
I would argue for a proper desmog. If your air pump seizes up (and they all do eventually), it will leave you dead in the water. My 86 FJ60 ran so much better after a proper desmog…my two cents for what it’s worth.
Nah it won’t. Just gut the pump and put it back on and down the road you go.

What? 1000 miles or 1600km ROAD trip? Your title sounds like it's supposed to be an achievement to impress people. Which is silly, because, mechanically and by the design, these land cruisers are among the most reliable cars ever built in the entire history or car making. All they need is basic maintenance and timely replacements of worn-out parts, like any other car does. However these classic land cruisers can take so much more abuse and can keep going under bad or missing maintenance for a long while before giving up. If you get one in good condition and well-cared, there is no question it can go distance and return back safely. And If you get one that's been all trashed and squeezed out, well then it's not about the car model or "antiquity", you can ruin any car quickly and turn it into trash like that.
My FJ60 is about 90% reliable. It’s always got something to fix, but that’s ok because it’s 36 years old.
If it starts every time and drives to where you need to be it's 100% reliable, even if theres always something to fix 👍
