Not Racist, But … Racism in the Workplace

  • While overt forms of racism in Australian workplaces are outlawed, many people from Indigenous and migrant backgrounds argue that racism is still pervasive - before and after joining a workplace. Last year, a major company’s employment listing overtly preferenced ‘candidates who are Anglo Saxon’. Multiple studies have shown that anglicising names on job applications improves a jobseeker’s prospects, prompting recent government trials of anonymous job applications.
So, how does racism manifest itself in the workplace - overtly, and covertly - and what impact does this have on both employee and employer? What can employers and governments do to address racial and religious discrimination at work? Santilla Chingaipe hosts a discussion of these issues and more, with Yin Paradies, Jackie Huggins and Lee Carnie.

I love that we are Asserting ourselves. Although they will attempt to frame it as Aggressiveness. Let's continue to strive. All thr Empowerment for All the People.

Many times the company does not make the individual that discriminates against someone accountable for their actions. Even though the company is the one that ends up paying the price. If I had a company where one of my employees discriminates against another that individual would have to either lose their job or pay for their actions.

Best discussion on racism I've heard. Isn't it strange how when POC challenge racism we have to do it such a way that doesn't offend?
And for the record that UK loves to collect data but it doesn't go any further than that!!!

Exactly! Like in most White dominated countries.
Lots of White academics doing this research, being paid, gaining their Phd's and Doctoral qualifications out of research based on White Racism against people of colour but doing absolutely NOTHING in practical terms from the knowledge they've gained and worst still, staying hidden and SILENT on heinous acts of racism.

I have a question if someone could help me out on this one. People call racism all the time at my work for simple disputes. I'm white and there are very few white people where I work. I honesty have a personality where I can kinda buck heads mildly with coworkers at times but due to my surroundings it's easy for people to think everything is race drivin... if I worked with all white people I'd still buck heads with people. So my question is how do you explain to people that it's not race related when I don't get along with some people or have moments. I feel like someone is always after me to the point where I can't do my job without dealing with that. Some of the people I've even heard them say they don't like white people... help

I’d start with finding something to calm them down, a compliment, some way you can relate, acknowledge that other people may think like that but you see this person and others who look like them as human. Quick thing about your nature and let your actions speak for you, if that doesn’t work, those people could have gone through a lot of trauma regarding this subject and they may be seeing you through that lense of pain

@@goldfishon-steroids4946 thankyou for the advice. I honestly expected that someone might start trolling on a subject like this. I actually found out that alot of the trouble I was dealing with was because of gossip and my promotion. Someone started rumors about me and it faded out over time

@@goldfishon-steroids4946 I think your right about trauma. I can relate to trauma. It was a wild time because I typically get along with most people. Would someone discuss about psychological racism where illiterate or less educated people use formal English language or accent in workplaces rather than informal literate English language or accent.
Because you ruled on other countries doesn’t make you & your speaking or accent or writing English better than other countries who have their own ways of speaking/accent or writing style or patterns.
Everyone has equal rights to mock or laugh on other or accept others, according to their good or bad upbringing.
European has their way of writing & speaking, Africans has their own way, Indian has their own way & so as other countries. Believe me none of us want to become the copy cats of British people or Americans or anyone else who thinks English is owned by them & we people need to copy their accent s, writing patterns or need to lick their accents.
I refuse to copy anyone & their writing or speaking patterns! I’m born to live my life not to copy anyone.
If I’m wrong for you, then you are equally wrong for me!

Racism is the first place in the work place it's done in such a covert way where you not to climb and be suppressed in your neighborhood in its open with racial segregation and showing ignorance this is how the UK it works yet the report says the UK isn't systematic racist such rubbish . Racism stems from the UK and is deeply embedded in society.
