The most horrifying thing about this video to me, is how subtlely the world changes, something will seem like a distant future until you're suddenly living in it. Having lived through the 2010s it almost feels like nothing has changed, just small things that are so small they don't seem to matter at all, but now we're in the beginning of the 2020s, and everything is so drastically different from the early 2010s, yet it still feels like nothing has changed at all.
Things really haven't changed all that much, it's just that more people are affected by the changes that have gradually been taking hold over the last couple of decades and those same people now have access to tools capable of transmitting their lives to millions. It's less things changing and moreso people now being able to be heard more.
The cat people of planet earth are seemingly unaware of this and are planning to return to having their cats as pets. Humans are striving for post-scarcity and are trying to use technology to do so.

You know how people in our generation are better at detecting people memeing and better at detecting scammers? What if the next generation was better at detecting stuff written by A.I.? It's gonna be scary being an old man, in a world I don't understand. I can barely catch up now.
I think that people will become more aware of the things that are written by AI and will be able to tell the difference between something that is written by a machine and something that is written by a human. This will be a very difficult task for the older generation because they are not used to this type of technology.

[Actual comment goes here] 9938" Of course assuming the other commenter is actually a person, they'd need to agree to do that, but once AI generated responses become the norm, I can see this being useful.
When I was younger, not that I'm even that old now, I used to argue politics online all the time. The number of times I thought to myself "how can someone be so ignorant" or "this is like talking to a brick wall" is immeasurable. The thought and feelings that any of those conversations could have been with an AI is a strange mix of fascination, anger, and self-hate for wasting my time. Then again, in retrospect, it probably was all a waste of time anyway so the difference is minimal lol, still an interesting and increasingly relevant idea.
I can relate so much, this is basically me everyday on social media, and yeah it leads to self-hate and loathing for wasting your time and energy, and honestly now I'm starting to see that many of the arguments that I had in the recent years may have been with AI generated comments. All these A.I. generation and discovery gives an euphoric feeling that will really only last the first few times it hits the large public (f.e. Dall E 2). What scares me is how effective The Algorithm is at locating our worst tendencies and capitalising on them to create feedback loops that make us worse off. It thinks that we want to be blasted with negativity and hate 24/7, because other people have proven to it that positive or negative, it's what is most likely to generate user engagement. We're essentially entering an era where AI is driving cultural trends because the people that don't do what The Algorithm wants end up being invisible.

A little while back, my friend was AI generating erotic fiction stories and posting them on Subreddits for said fiction. Got some upvotes. So there's at least one other person who is secretly posting AI content alongside real content. Who knows how much more there is.
I've actually had this exact thing in my head for a while ever since I learned about the "dead internet theory" thing, which seemed kind of stupid to me because I learned about it when everyone was crazy about AlphaZero being good at chess. But as AI keeps getting better, that theory seems more valid. Obviously there's always going to be people on the internet, but the amount of bots that are creeping up isn't going to slow down. We interact with AI more than we actively think, this video was in my recommended tab, which some algorithm on Google's computers decided I want to watch. There's also Facebook, who have already been caught emotionally manipulating people by showing them different posts on Facebook as an experiment. Being able to control so much of what someone sees or thinks just by being a curator is already crazy to me, but being able to fake entire conversations underneath posts is super scary. When I used to look at reddit, I sometimes looked a cryptocurrency forums, and I noticed overtime that sometimes half of the comments under a post would be touting about how some stupid coin is good or bad. All of the accounts having very few posts and made relatively recently. If that's already enough to convince some people to burn their money or get something in their head, I can't imagine what we're in for when it comes to things that actually matter. It's probably already happening lol
I think it's hard for people to grasp that because most of the time we're just using the internet to kill time. No one really uses it to gain knowledge or anything, and it's pretty easy to shrug off how much control companies like Google and Facebook have over us when we're just scrolling through memes and cat pictures. But all of the information we use is being controlled by a select few and it's only going to get worse as technology gets better, and they get better at manipulating us.

That's a very generic response that wouldn't get many upvotes (at least not on this channel) if it didn't have the "-GPT-3" at the end. AI generated comments aren't the norm yet and the vast majority of people don't engage with the stupid comments written by AIs yet, even if they don't know that they weren't written by real people.
@fiso64 I don't think it matters if it gets upvoted, at least by real people. On sites like Reddit, all the bots need to do is get past bot filters, and spam upvotes on your posts. Also, I've only given the AI the title and a bit of the description as a prompt. If you could have it, say, read subtitle data to reference specific moments in the video, it would be much harder to detect. How many comments have you seen that just repeat jokes from the video? I'm sure an AI would have no problem mimicking those types of comments. UA-cam's "most replayed" feature makes it even easier. Take the most replayed area, get the subtitles, and generate a comment about it.
@@MrRobotrax Not arguing that you can't technically do that, I'm saying that nobody does it enough to significantly affect the average person, and the video is a bit overblown because of course those bots become more apparent when you're a UA-cam creator. Basic bots are too simple and probably only affect senile people online, and advanced systems such as GPT-3 aren't yet useable in this fashion due to high training and inference costs. I also kinda doubt that Reddit's upvote system is regularly abused by bots, but I can't prove that. From my own experience, regular people can easily be substituted for bots in order to create echo chambers and hive minds. Fake news have always existed and were always way harder to disprove than to create, you could always pay people to spread them, and overall this AI stuff is just us advancing to the next level of misinformation and manipulation rather than us encountering something fundamentally new. I'm more concerned about AI caused job loss (industrial revolution^2, except this time it definitely won't create more jobs than it'll eliminate) and human-level AI working against us.

I’ve been having this existential dread about this thought of being one of the last generations to exist before the internet connected EVERYONE and how having that life experience feels important to me for some reason I can’t really explain. I don’t feel bad for me or my generation, I feel bad for the ones that will grow up joining a game in progress so to speak. With AI's that can write convincing sentences and Virtual Assistants like Alexa, Siri or Bixby, we really are not far off having a program that you can converse with in the same way you would talk to your friends, family or colleagues. The holographic girlfriend from Blade Runner is now only held back by our hologram technology and not our AI technology.
We have had realistic AI's for a long time now, but it is only recently that they have become truly useful. The majority of AI's are still used for simple tasks like data entry, but as they become more sophisticated, they will be able to do much more complex tasks. In the future, AI's will be able to do our jobs for us and we will be able to spend our time doing the things we love.

AI scares me more in the fact that even though we're nowhere near them being "sentient" or even 'sapient' enough to have their own opinion. They still have the power to seem like it but they're just machines doing what they're trained to do, they have no real motive (other then what they're programmed with), no real end goal, they just exist and it won't matter what you do to them because they don't think or feel like a human so they can be far more dumb, unrelenting, and up their own ass then any meatbag ever could. And they have nothing to motivate them. We have made wraiths and ghosts a real thing, and they troll on the internet.
I'd rather have them stay that way. It's much better to have dumb machines easily controllable by humans, than smart machines capable of thinking for themselves. An ai with genuine human intelligence would likely become a species humans would have to compete with for survival.

I also definitely agree with you 2kliksphilp that we need to develop ways to detects this kind of stuff because we either can't or won't be able to soon. What is even more frightening is that when you talked about how social media can control ppl through algorithms and etc., that has already been happening fir about a dozen years on all platforms and there's a whole documentary about all this called "the social dilemma" and it was made by the ex-workers for all the social media companies (except tiktok because it was released just as it rose to popularity). Social media platforms that force into interacting with someone using some form of voice or visual chat are a perfect place to start. The truth is that whilst this holds value and thought, the people with surface level knowledge are the ones that oil the machine when it comes to the internet. They are the ones that decide what ends up becoming our culture for the next few years, they decide what ends up becoming the new trend, and the next wave of commercial hatred, or of trendyness, of enjoyability. I remember the first time i had a big 'aha' about the issue of bots and AI. It was around 2010, I had gotten into an older game and was looking for a online forum to discuss it in. I can't remember what game it was anymore. What I found was a really old early 2000 forum, one of those with lax account creation and verification. It was REALLY active. There were several post-threads here with 100+ pages and new posts and replies from the last minute or so. It was an active community of hundreds of "people" for an outdates game and they were ALL bots. Bots replying to bots, bots trying to scam bots, bots advertising to bots. Just this self-perpetuating hive of useless information going back and forth on some forgotten forum for a nearly forgotten game. I remember wondering idly how much energy this 'discourse of nothing' was consuming, how many more places like this might exist and what the future would hold.
The scary thing about this kind of AI is that it will inevitably give conspiracy theories far more credence in terms of vastly more voices parroting the same stuff, to every large movement being immediately dismissed as being an AI swarm like what with the russian bots in terms of verifying events "different angles" works for now, until it gets to the point where it can do different angles well enough that people are convinced when they see it :/
The answer is to stick to sources you know to be real-ish (there's a news aggregate I really like called AllSides, that specifically reports the bias of agencies and who, overall, is pushing particular stories) and getting as close to primary sources as possible if you feel really strongly about something. But of course no one usually has time for that.
They claim their opposition is faking the numbers with bots because otherwise it imply they were in the wrong side, politically & democratically. That attitude, or this attitude "only few are right, more people is wronger than right" (ie: elitism).
I think people will always be susceptible to conspiracy theories, regardless of whether or not AI is involved. People tend to look for patterns and meaning in everything, even when there isn't any. AI could make conspiracy theories seem more credible, but I don't think it would be the root cause.

When going through this video at first, I both brushed off the concerns about AI comments as well understanding that indeed they do indeed have tremendous potential ("They don't really impact how I use the internet, but I do understand and agree with what you said"). Given that everyone else here has already said most of what I wanted to say about AI, I will just comment that I've realized that despite how isolated someone may feel socially when using the internet, it technically pushes people together, either to amalgamate, or to conflict, so it might just be the unplanned design of the internet that everything just... converges. (Surface level insight, I know. I just felt like I needed to write this down somewhere.) I'm someone whose paranoia has never truly found rest ever since I understood how computers work, but I always neglect to really think about how tech shapes the world in the banal ways, so thank you for making these videos so I remember to think critically about the world around me. The point about shaping the conversation is crucial. Semi autonomous comment or twitter bots act as huge force multipliers for minority or artificial ideas. Making a fringe belief appear mainstream is very powerful, and in our current media environment it can quickly legitimise the ‘debate’ even where the facts and black and white.
Seriously. Sometimes it's in the form of literal strawmen, too, where fake accounts will try to make their demographic obvious before tossing batshit insane takes around, all set up for the sake of slander.
Even thinking purely in terms of anchoring. Like when that store chain tried to do away with the stuff like "$29.99, usually $35!" and just list the price and it was a disaster for them. Or how there's always a super deluxe version of a product to make the middle model seem like the more money-conscious choice that also isn't the cheapest model. The trouble is we normally don't really have an idea of how much stuff is worth in an absolute sense. We're constantly comparing like "oh these cage-free eggs are more expensive than these normal eggs that are more expensive than the store brand, which compares to other products in the store". It's like that also for culture and opinions. We're constantly comparing to what is around us and basing a lot of our thoughts on that.

Isn't it funny how a game from two decades ago can be discussing AI and literally hit you like a train those two decades later when you go re-watch that one part of it talking about our future? Gotta give it some credit, MGS2 was damn ahead of it's time and it's honestly scary to think about what's next to come for us.
If you want to draw attention to the image generation issue you should maybe consider doing a Dall-E 2 video if you manage to get an invite for it. The realism and accuracy of it is truly mindblowing and scary. I thought AI like that was at literal decades away, but when I saw it exists now i was dumbfounded. It's the same name as Dalle Mini but it hasn't gotten anywhere near the same attention even though it's light years ahead in quality.
What honestly scares me more, is that, if this ai becomes advanced enough, soon movies and then games will become ai generated, using a prompt in the form of a highly detailed script. This invention has the possibility to eliminate millions of jobs realting to the entertainment industry.
Now just think about this: Dall-E is more or less open to the public. Now imagine what is already being developed / used by governments and tech giants.
I'm not a huge fan of the idea that the government has even better tech than what we have access to. They definitely do, when it comes to a lot of things. But thinking their tech is better than we know of in every way is a tad conspiratorial. In this case, I doubt their tech is better than what we have. Hell, I think that the people with any real control only begun learning all the applications software like this offers them.
I don't really think ai "eliminating jobs" is really something to be worried about. A shift to primarily AI based workflows in the entertainment industry would likely create just as many jobs for model design and prompt design as it would. Also, automating jobs really _should_ be a good thing and should increase quality of life for everyone, but unfortunately companies generally just take the opportunity to fire people and get a little extra profit Also also, Linus Boman made a really good video on AI/graphic design. would recommend. Just gonna throw it out there, big long-time fan, but I do feel as though on some of these subjects (like vaccines) your interactions on the internet are going to be with people who are the most vocal (and often times, angry). You're getting the caricature version of groups presented and hating that. Most reasonable people on any given subject, who if given the opportunity to explain themselves properly you might still disagree with but understand where they're coming from, generally aren't arguing online about it, or have nice cushy positions of power like media.
You're probably right about this, but I'm also not sure how I can avoid it, short of not talking about certain subjects on the internet. Obviously, I don't want to do that. I'm also not sure that the most vocal people are necessarily the people you should be talking to. For example, I can't imagine that I'm going to change the mind of anyone who's really anti-vaccine, but I can imagine that I could be helpful to someone who's on the fence. So I'm okay talking to people who are really anti-vaccine, even though they're not going to change my mind.
Very interesting video. Huge problem at the moment how everyone is so plugged in but it can be so hard to reliably work out what is trustable and what isn’t. So much internet usage is low brain power too so users are malleable and easy to trick. Scary times

in this video about AI stuff, one thing that stood out to me was the part about commenter's scepticism/pessimism around positive viewpoints of brands/products it stands out because, while it *can* be AI influenced, it's also quite likely that it is just due to a loss of trust in content creators and their honesty. there have been plenty of "scandals" about youtubers endorsing and recommending products to their fanbase while withholding the fact that they were paid to do so. One of those that spring to mind is the csgo gambling site one with youtubers who promoted it, secretly owning the site without disclosing such. Just seems that there are perspectives you did not realize were common. similar to the time you talked about why people hate VPNs, when VPNs themselves are not a negative thing. when in reality the hate for VPNs is due to VPN advertisements being (or, at least having been) deceptive to the point that it is a big enough issue for people to hate the whole products/industry
Hi SopperVH, It's interesting that you mention brands and products in relation to AI. I think that one of the challenges with AI is that it can be difficult to know when we're being sold to, and whether or not the information we're getting is accurate. There have been a lot of scandals lately about influencers and UA-camrs who endorse products without disclosing that they've been paid to do so. I think this has made people more sceptical about the information they're seeing online. It's important to remember that not all brands or products are bad. Sometimes people can be quick to judge something without knowing all the facts. For example, there was a time when people hated VPNs because of the way they were being advertised. But VPNs themselves are not a negative thing. I think it's important to keep an open mind and not to make snap judgements about something without knowing all the facts.

I've been thinking for a while that the UA-cam comment section have been generally becoming more and positive over the last few years on big youtube videos. To the point where its sometimes creepy only seeing positive stuff in the first few comments without adding anything any value or discussion. Years ago, I thought AI was something else that could be beneficial to several fields. But god this video makes me realize it's already going down hill. I hate AI, it being used for awful reasons and all. Not to say you can't have fun with one, but I think the world's going to take a terrible turn with how far it has come.

I got to a point in my life where I've realized the Internet has had such a profound impact on my view of others. I'm so used to going on Reddit and assuming (although it's usually true) that whatever answer is most popular is in fact "correct", even if it is just an opinion. Now I notice that every time I'm talking to someone new, and we bring up a subject they're interested in, I'll automatically assume they know absolutely everything there is to know about said subject, and that my opinions will most likely be "wrong". I'm so much more insecure about my own views and it's almost as if I expect myself to be wrong and everyone else to be right. This is especially awful in intimate relationships, it's as if I've developed an inferiority complex.

Wow, this video was very thoughtful and as a professional programmer, AI is everywhere. I hear about it every day, and I have become numb to it. Use AI to generate this and that. It's a useful tool, but it also has a lot of scary implications that I don't hear about every day.

This video makes me so paranoid but at the same time validates some suspicions I had regarding AI and the Internet in general. That being said,this was great! Please make more videos on these kind of subjects -a fellow human.
I totally get where you're coming from. It's definitely a scary thought, and this video does a great job of illustrating just how far AI has come. As for the Internet, I'm not sure if it's really to blame for the advancement of AI. Sure, the Internet has made it easier for people to share information and collaborate, but I think the real driving force behind AI is the fact that computers are becoming more and more powerful. With the right software, they can now do things that were once thought to be impossible, like beat a human at chess or Go.
There is a potential upside to this: if things become so completely awful on the internet, leaving it as a wasteland for marketing campaigns and bad actors, then perhaps it will push society towards valuing in-person contact much more than online contact. I think a lot of modern society’s problems and perceived problems stem from the fact that we already don’t consider the people we talk to online as people, yet we still consider online discourse just as important and influential as in-person discourse. If the internet is invaded by AI which cannot be circumvented and defined separately from a real person, then I think we could see people moving away, not in totality of course, but society’s general evaluation of online discourse could fall from its relatively equal importance that we see today. We can see the death of social media, which I think would undoubtedly benefit society which has proven to not be able to handle it.
I think what scares me is that none of these thoughts are new. Many ancient philosophers wondered how we could prove that we, or anything around us, was real. Many people have wondered the same since, I even occasionally joke to my friends that I am just a “reoccurring hallucination.” The difference is these thoughts are now much more realistic, while I’m not truly just a “reoccurring hallucination,” no one reading this can actually be certain I am a real, living, breathing human. We can’t be certain anything we see online is real, which is terrifying. The internet is the modern forum, we no longer meet in town squares to hear the news. But even if we did, is it really that long until we can’t distinguish between man and machine even when face to face? We already have made robots with extremely realistic movement, and others with extremely realistic appearance. With further improvements and the combination of the two, will we be able to tell them apart from us? At that point is there even a difference between them and us?

I think the sudden advancements in AI are beginning to reveal the constraints of the internet and the principles that underpin modern social interactions in tandem with technology. The trickery possible with AI has become so much easier especially because of the fact that our identity relies on a simple discourse structure to differentiate ourselves (e.g. usernames, profile pictures and biographies), how can you tell a real celebrity from a bot when the clues are so similar and predictable (from the user’s view at least)? The systems that underpin our CMC interactions and behaviours also follow repetitive patterns and can be just as easily mimicked, such as Karma on reddit, and the methods used to redress this are beginning to fall behind - such as Steam’s trust factor - this leads onto how these behaviours can be manipulated for misinformation with Morbius back in cinemas because some people think it’s a good film (I’m still angry about the film/meme, as one of my favourite Doctor Who episodes is “The Brain Of Morbius”) because of the prestige and validation attached to viral memes. Our technological advancements have abstracted human nature and this is now the turning point!
I've been loving GPT-3, been having lots of fun with it, incredible what it can do and I feel like many people don't realize how powerful this is. @@agentoranj5858 Yeah, my main concern though is how conversation is shut down, despite not having any evidence of the contrary, I don't expect everyone to believe or take these things seriously, however when big social media companies are just completely shutting down conversations to protect peoples feelings then that's when we have a real issue. It really shouldn't be much to ask for social media to take a step back from conversation and only take action against call for violence.
I tend to be more on side of being ok with removing certain groups and such from say Facebook, but at the same time the amount of control these companies have is definitely scary. There was some UA-cam videos where for some reason my comments were getting auto-removed (though I think many re-appeared eventually). Look, the best way to shield yourself from misinformation is to be confident about your findings, but objective at the same time. Be open-minded in considering other viewpoints, but think for yourself. Be honest with yourself and with others. The most horrifying thing about this video to me, is how subtlely the world changes, something will seem like a distant future until you're suddenly living in it. Having lived through the 2010s it almost feels like nothing has changed, just small things that are so small they don't seem to matter at all, but now we're in the beginning of the 2020s, and everything is so drastically different from the early 2010s, yet it still feels like nothing has changed at all.
Things really haven't changed all that much, it's just that more people are affected by the changes that have gradually been taking hold over the last couple of decades and those same people now have access to tools capable of transmitting their lives to millions. I think that people will become more aware of the things that are written by AI and will be able to tell the difference between something that is written by a machine and something that is written by a human. When I was younger, not that I'm even that old now, I used to argue politics online all the time. The number of times I thought to myself "how can someone be so ignorant" or "this is like talking to a brick wall" is immeasurable. The thought and feelings that any of those conversations could have been with an AI is a strange mix of fascination, anger, and self-hate for wasting my time. Then again, in retrospect, it probably was all a waste of time anyway so the difference is minimal lol, still an interesting and increasingly relevant idea.

All these A.I. generation and discovery gives an euphoric feeling that will really only last the first few times it hits the large public (f.e. Dall E 2). We will very soon come to a point where so much in every single field is generated by A.I. that we will literally be impressed by absolutely nothing whatsoever anymore. I can understand the potential and the hype, but it simply won't last. I find that to be a very dark perspective going into the future, and it will kill every last bit of motivation to achieve anything for all future generations to come.

What scares me is how effective The Algorithm is at locating our worst tendencies and capitalising on them to create feedback loops that make us worse off. It thinks that we want to be blasted with negativity and hate 24/7, because other people have proven to it that positive or negative, it's what is most likely to generate user engagement. We're essentially entering an era where AI is driving cultural trends because the people that don't do what The Algorithm wants end up being invisible.

A little while back, my friend was AI generating erotic fiction stories and posting them on Subreddits for said fiction. Got some upvotes. So there's at least one other person who is secretly posting AI content alongside real content. Who knows how much more there is.
I've actually had this exact thing in my head for a while ever since I learned about the "dead internet theory" thing, which seemed kind of stupid to me because I learned about it when everyone was crazy about AlphaZero being good at chess. But as AI keeps getting better, that theory seems more valid. Obviously there's always going to be people on the internet, but the amount of bots that are creeping up isn't going to slow down. We interact with AI more than we actively think, this video was in my recommended tab, which some algorithm on Google's computers decided I want to watch. There's also Facebook, who have already been caught emotionally manipulating people by showing them different posts on Facebook as an experiment. Being able to control so much of what someone sees or thinks just by being a curator is already crazy to me, but being able to fake entire conversations underneath posts is super scary. When I used to look at reddit, I sometimes looked a cryptocurrency forums, and I noticed overtime that sometimes half of the comments under a post would be touting about how some stupid coin is good or bad. All of the accounts having very few posts and made relatively recently. If that's already enough to convince some people to burn their money or get something in their head, I can't imagine what we're in for when it comes to things that actually matter. It's probably already happening lol
I think it's hard for people to grasp that because most of the time we're just using the internet to kill time. No one really uses it to gain knowledge or anything, and it's pretty easy to shrug off how much control companies like Google and Facebook have over us when we're just scrolling through memes and cat pictures. But all of the information we use is being controlled by a select few and it's only going to get worse as technology gets better, and they get better at manipulating us.

That's a very generic response that wouldn't get many upvotes (at least not on this channel) if it didn't have the "-GPT-3" at the end. AI generated comments aren't the norm yet and the vast majority of people don't engage with the stupid comments written by AIs yet, even if they don't know that they weren't written by real people.
@fiso64 I don't think it matters if it gets upvoted, at least by real people. On sites like Reddit, all the bots need to do is get past bot filters, and spam upvotes on your posts.
Also, I've only given the AI the title and a bit of the description as a prompt. If you could have it, say, read subtitle data to reference specific moments in the video, it would be much harder to detect.
How many comments have you seen that just repeat jokes from the video? I'm sure an AI would have no problem mimicking those types of comments.
UA-cam's "most replayed" feature makes it even easier. Take the most replayed area, get the subtitles, and generate a comment about it.
@@MrRobotrax Not arguing that you can't technically do that, I'm saying that nobody does it enough to significantly affect the average person, and the video is a bit overblown because of course those bots become more apparent when you're a UA-cam creator. Basic bots are too simple and probably only affect senile people online, and advanced systems such as GPT-3 aren't yet useable in this fashion due to high training and inference costs. I also kinda doubt that Reddit's upvote system is regularly abused by bots, but I can't prove that. From my own experience, regular people can easily be substituted for bots in order to create echo chambers and hive minds. Fake news have always existed and were always way harder to disprove than to create, you could always pay people to spread them, and overall this AI stuff is just us advancing to the next level of misinformation and manipulation rather than us encountering something fundamentally new. I'm more concerned about AI caused job loss (industrial revolution^2, except this time it definitely won't create more jobs than it'll eliminate) and human-level AI working against us.

I’ve been having this existential dread about this thought of being one of the last generations to exist before the internet connected EVERYONE and how having that life experience feels important to me for some reason I can’t really explain. AI scares me more in the fact that even though we're nowhere near them being "sentient" or even 'sapient' enough to have their own opinion. They still have the power to seem like it but they're just machines doing what they're trained to do, they have no real motive (other then what they're programmed with), no real end goal, they just exist and it won't matter what you do to them because they don't think or feel like a human so they can be far more dumb, unrelenting, and up their own ass then any meatbag ever could. It was around 2010, I had gotten into an older game and was looking for a online forum to discuss it in. I can't remember what game it was anymore.
What I found was a really old early 2000 forum, one of those with lax account creation and verification. It was REALLY active.
There were several post-threads here with 100+ pages and new posts and replies from the last minute or so.
It was an active community of hundreds of "people" for an outdates game and they were ALL bots.
Bots replying to bots, bots trying to scam bots, bots advertising to bots. Just this self-perpetuating hive of useless information going back and forth on some forgotten forum for a nearly forgotten game.
I remember wondering idly how much energy this 'discourse of nothing' was consuming, how many more places like this might exist and what the future would hold.

The scary thing about this kind of AI is that it will inevitably give conspiracy theories far more credence in terms of vastly more voices parroting the same stuff, to every large movement being immediately dismissed as being an AI swarm like what with the russian bots
in terms of verifying events "different angles" works for now, until it gets to the point where it can do different angles well enough that people are convinced when they see it :/
The answer is to stick to sources you know to be real-ish (there's a news aggregate I really like called AllSides, that specifically reports the bias of agencies and who, overall, is pushing particular stories) and getting as close to primary sources as possible if you feel really strongly about something. But of course no one usually has time for that.
They claim their opposition is faking the numbers with bots because otherwise it imply they were in the wrong side, politically & democratically. That attitude, or this attitude "only few are right, more people is wronger than right" (ie: elitism).
I think people will always be susceptible to conspiracy theories, regardless of whether or not AI is involved. People tend to look for patterns and meaning in everything, even when there isn't any. AI could make conspiracy theories seem more credible, but I don't think it would be the root cause.
Let's face it, the “Dead Internet conspiracy theory”, which is what Philip was suggesting was (at least partially) real in this video, is in itself a conspiracy theory, at least in the sense that the word is being used nowadays (there isn't really a conspiracy going on, but still).

When going through this video at first, I both brushed off the concerns about AI comments as well understanding that indeed they do indeed have tremendous potential ("They don't really impact how I use the internet, but I do understand and agree with what you said"). Given that everyone else here has already said most of what I wanted to say about AI, I will just comment that I've realized that despite how isolated someone may feel socially when using the internet, it technically pushes people together, either to amalgamate, or to conflict, so it might just be the unplanned design of the internet that everything just... converges. (Surface level insight, I know. I just felt like I needed to write this down somewhere.) I'm someone whose paranoia has never truly found rest ever since I understood how computers work, but I always neglect to really think about how tech shapes the world in the banal ways, so thank you for making these videos so I remember to think critically about the world around me. It's something I hope everyone, especially people growing up right now, develops and cultivates, as it might be one of the few things that will keep you from stumbling about reddit at 3 am talking about how some type of portable lantern is better than another or whatever (save it for when your uncle comes over). It's something I'm sure I'll think about when I'm an old man, filled with regret, waiting to die alone.

The point about shaping the conversation is crucial. Semi autonomous comment or twitter bots act as huge force multipliers for minority or artificial ideas. Making a fringe belief appear mainstream is very powerful, and in our current media environment it can quickly legitimise the ‘debate’ even where the facts and black and white.
Seriously. Sometimes it's in the form of literal strawmen, too, where fake accounts will try to make their demographic obvious before tossing batshit insane takes around, all set up for the sake of slander.
Even thinking purely in terms of anchoring. Like when that store chain tried to do away with the stuff like "$29.99, usually $35!" and just list the price and it was a disaster for them. Or how there's always a super deluxe version of a product to make the middle model seem like the more money-conscious choice that also isn't the cheapest model. The trouble is we normally don't really have an idea of how much stuff is worth in an absolute sense. We're constantly comparing like "oh these cage-free eggs are more expensive than these normal eggs that are more expensive than the store brand, which compares to other products in the store".
It's like that also for culture and opinions. We're constantly comparing to what is around us and basing a lot of our thoughts on that.

If you want to draw attention to the image generation issue you should maybe consider doing a Dall-E 2 video if you manage to get an invite for it. The realism and accuracy of it is truly mindblowing and scary. I thought AI like that was at literal decades away, but when I saw it exists now i was dumbfounded. It's the same name as Dalle Mini but it hasn't gotten anywhere near the same attention even though it's light years ahead in quality.
What honestly scares me more, is that, if this ai becomes advanced enough, soon movies and then games will become ai generated, using a prompt in the form of a highly detailed script. This invention has the possibility to eliminate millions of jobs realting to the entertainment industry.
Now just think about this: Dall-E is more or less open to the public. Now imagine what is already being developed / used by governments and tech giants.
I'm not a huge fan of the idea that the government has even better tech than what we have access to. They definitely do, when it comes to a lot of things. But thinking their tech is better than we know of in every way is a tad conspiratorial. In this case, I doubt their tech is better than what we have. Hell, I think that the people with any real control only begun learning all the applications software like this offers them.
DALL E mini only got attention because of DALL E 2 afaik. DALL E 2 is in a closed beta right now so most people can't really try it for themselves
I don't really think ai "eliminating jobs" is really something to be worried about. A shift to primarily AI based workflows in the entertainment industry would likely create just as many jobs for model design and prompt design as it would.
Also, automating jobs really _should_ be a good thing and should increase quality of life for everyone, but unfortunately companies generally just take the opportunity to fire people and get a little extra profit

Just gonna throw it out there, big long-time fan, but I do feel as though on some of these subjects (like vaccines) your interactions on the internet are going to be with people who are the most vocal (and often times, angry). You're getting the caricature version of groups presented and hating that. Most reasonable people on any given subject, who if given the opportunity to explain themselves properly you might still disagree with but understand where they're coming from, generally aren't arguing online about it, or have nice cushy positions of power like media.
You're probably right about this, but I'm also not sure how I can avoid it, short of not talking about certain subjects on the internet. Obviously, I don't want to do that.
I'm also not sure that the most vocal people are necessarily the people you should be talking to. Very interesting video. Huge problem at the moment how everyone is so plugged in but it can be so hard to reliably work out what is trustable and what isn’t. So much internet usage is low brain power too so users are malleable and easy to trick. Scary times

It's interesting that you mention brands and products in relation to AI. I think that one of the challenges with AI is that it can be difficult to know when we're being sold to, and whether or not the information we're getting is accurate.
There have been a lot of scandals lately about influencers and UA-camrs who endorse products without disclosing that they've been paid to do so. I think this has made people more sceptical about the information they're seeing online.
It's important to remember that not all brands or products are bad. Sometimes people can be quick to judge something without knowing all the facts. For example, there was a time when people hated VPNs because of the way they were being advertised. But VPNs themselves are not a negative thing. I think it's important to keep an open mind and not to make snap judgements about something without knowing all the facts.

And obviously, not all products or brands are bad. almost all of them are designed to make profit, but that doesnt mean the things you pay for are terrible due to that.
However, good products can have negative public views and bad products can have positive public views. its an unfortunate truth for various reasons. one of them being that marketing and public relations might have messed up. doesnt change the product, but does change the view.
VPNs arent a bad product, but they are far more niche than they say they are. and often arent as impressive as they claim to be. they still have a use, and are still good, people just hate them for claiming to be needed when they're not.
Another example of PR messups can be minecrafts latest update. its on the bigger and better side of all updates in the game's history. but people are dissapointed by it due to overpromises and mismanaged expectations.
That does explain why the more comments I read on any platform, be it reddit or youtube, I am seeing a complete lack of coherent spelling and grammar. I also feel this may be what is leading to the echo chamber effect of opinions online. Thank you for this
I've been thinking for a while that the UA-cam comment section have been generally becoming more and positive over the last few years on big youtube videos. To the point where its sometimes creepy only seeing positive stuff in the first few comments without adding anything any value or discussion.

I got to a point in my life where I've realized the Internet has had such a profound impact on my view of others. I'm so used to going on Reddit and assuming (although it's usually true) that whatever answer is most popular is in fact "correct", even if it is just an opinion.
Now I notice that every time I'm talking to someone new, and we bring up a subject they're interested in, I'll automatically assume they know absolutely everything there is to know about said subject, and that my opinions will most likely be "wrong".
I'm so much more insecure about my own views and it's almost as if I expect myself to be wrong and everyone else to be right. This is especially awful in intimate relationships, it's as if I've developed an inferiority complex.

Wow, this video was very thoughtful and as a professional programmer, AI is everywhere. I hear about it every day, and I have become numb to it. Use AI to generate this and that. It's a useful tool, but it also has a lot of scary implications that I don't hear about every day.

I totally get where you're coming from. It's definitely a scary thought, and this video does a great job of illustrating just how far AI has come. As for the Internet, I'm not sure if it's really to blame for the advancement of AI. Sure, the Internet has made it easier for people to share information and collaborate, but I think the real driving force behind AI is the fact that computers are becoming more and more powerful. With the right software, they can now do things that were once thought to be impossible, like beat a human at chess or Go.

There is a potential upside to this: if things become so completely awful on the internet, leaving it as a wasteland for marketing campaigns and bad actors, then perhaps it will push society towards valuing in-person contact much more than online contact. I think a lot of modern society’s problems and perceived problems stem from the fact that we already don’t consider the people we talk to online as people, yet we still consider online discourse just as important and influential as in-person discourse. If the internet is invaded by AI which cannot be circumvented and defined separately from a real person, then I think we could see people moving away, not in totality of course, but society’s general evaluation of online discourse could fall from its relatively equal importance that we see today. We can see the death of social media, which I think would undoubtedly benefit society which has proven to not be able to handle it.

I think what scares me is that none of these thoughts are new. Many ancient philosophers wondered how we could prove that we, or anything around us, was real. Many people have wondered the same since, I even occasionally joke to my friends that I am just a “reoccurring hallucination.”
The difference is these thoughts are now much more realistic, while I’m not truly just a “reoccurring hallucination,” no one reading this can actually be certain I am a real, living, breathing human.
We can’t be certain anything we see online is real, which is terrifying. The internet is the modern forum, we no longer meet in town squares to hear the news.
But even if we did, is it really that long until we can’t distinguish between man and machine even when face to face?
We already have made robots with extremely realistic movement, and others with extremely realistic appearance. With further improvements and the combination of the two, will we be able to tell them apart from us? At that point is there even a difference between them and us?

I think the sudden advancements in AI are beginning to reveal the constraints of the internet and the principles that underpin modern social interactions in tandem with technology. The trickery possible with AI has become so much easier especially because of the fact that our identity relies on a simple discourse structure to differentiate ourselves (e.g. usernames, profile pictures and biographies), how can you tell a real celebrity from a bot when the clues are so similar and predictable (from the user’s view at least)? The systems that underpin our CMC interactions and behaviours also follow repetitive patterns and can be just as easily mimicked, such as Karma on reddit, and the methods used to redress this are beginning to fall behind - such as Steam’s trust factor - this leads onto how these behaviours can be manipulated for misinformation with Morbius back in cinemas because some people think it’s a good film (I’m still angry about the film/meme, as one of my favourite Doctor Who episodes is “The Brain Of Morbius”) because of the prestige and validation attached to viral memes. Our technological advancements have abstracted human nature and this is now the turning point!

@@agentoranj5858 Yeah, my main concern though is how conversation is shut down, despite not having any evidence of the contrary, I don't expect everyone to believe or take these things seriously, however when big social media companies are just completely shutting down conversations to protect peoples feelings then that's when we have a real issue. Especially when we find out later that all along this was a true issue that has came to light. It really shouldn't be much to ask for social media to take a step back from conversation and only take action against call for violence.

I tend to be more on side of being ok with removing certain groups and such from say Facebook, but at the same time the amount of control these companies have is definitely scary. There was some UA-cam videos where for some reason my comments were getting auto-removed (though I think many re-appeared eventually). It was suuuuper innocuous stuff involving keyboards and it took me a bit to even realize it was happening. I still don't know exactly what triggered it, and there really wasn't any recourse.

no, the best way to shield from misinformation is to "see" only the right sources. For example, even before clicking on a video, inspect the channel itself first, do not even click the video until you sure of the channel, treat information like a brain virus and you do not "open" suspicious video. Remember, the adversary has deep pocket and has wealth of data on how to manipulate human psyche.
You're right, it's not that hard. But it's also not always easy, either. Sometimes it's hard to be objective, and sometimes it's hard to think for yourself. But I think it's important to try.
