    I walked into a Guitar Center and they had a MatrixBrute sitting in the used area for $1500. i played with it having no prior knowledge of it. I left the store and was back within an hour to buy it. I actually got it got $1300 because they were having a sale on used gear. I got it home and fell in love with it. No way will I get rid of it. Thanks for the video

    Monster synth , they had one in the store that I picked my Monologue up from , did not dare to mess with , basically spoil the fun of getting my first entry synth , by trying something that looks some amazing , to me it looks like a real synth should do all those buttons and dials and the twist with the mode matrix, hrs of fun to be had , can not blame you for getting such machine , and thanks for sharing it with the world.

    Thank you for this video on the question of why buy this. I had been stating that if I was going to spend this much on a mono synth I would go euro-rack....BUT.....I have changed my mind. This synth, just like the Mini Brut, is going to change the way we look at synths from now on. The frustration over limited modulation on nearly all other synths is opened up with this synth, freeing the mind to explore the "what if". Now you can finally modulate something never before realized outside of modular gear. I hope the rest of the synth would takes note of the Matrix Brut and the Deep Mind 12 and begins to provide us with digitally controlled or "Matrix Brut style" modulation sources. I would hope the day of the limited synths will come to an end. As an extremely impoverished musician, the possibility of owning this synth is zero, but I anxiously await the "trickle down" of this technology in an inexpensive synth. The Deep Mind has certainly given me the opportunity to explore the large modulation options in the 6 voice table synth for only about $700.00. Trouble is I am not a fan of Behringer's dependability and cannot invest at this time, I will be waiting for dependability reviews over the next few years.

    If the Moog or the DSI or else is a Mercedes...than the Matrixbrute is definitely the Bugatti Chiron. Nothing less!
    French design and technology at its best! We have to take off our hat to Arturia.

    • @benbowland
      @benbowland 5 років тому +4

      And then came the Moog One

    • @newname4405
      @newname4405 4 роки тому

      I get the gist, but neither comparison makes much sense to me. A Merc can be had new around $30-40k USD depending on how bare bones it is, while a Chiron is $3M, before any taxes and dealer fees which I’m sure can easily add another million or more (Though I’m no billionaire so I wouldn’t know exactly, lol). Point being, though, is many Moogs and DSIs are $2k or less (The Matriarch would be the most exact match in terms of price point, though they’re hardly the same beast), as the MatrixBrute is also $2000. So, if you want an accurate metaphor, I’d say it’d be comparing a classic Merc to something like 60’s American muscle, or even a Fiat Abarth 124 Rally or some other crazy classic Abarth.
      The Moog One, meanwhile, at 6-8k for 8-16 voices (and really if you’re gonna spend 6k, why not add on 2 more and double your polyphony?), if anything that’s more the Chiron or some other different tier car like a new Rolls or something. Actually, the System-35A is more the Chiron, lol, and the One is maybe like a Ferrari 360 Modelo or something. Okay, that’s taking it a bit far, but point is, I wouldn’t even compare a C300 to a Bentley, Maserati, etc., and even they are a “poor man’s supercar” to a Chiron buyer. I’d say 25k is a pretty good price point to represent that difference, lol. The difference between 2 and 6-8k just isn’t that much, hell it could even be just an S600 or something. Ok gotta get off the car metaphors..
      Also, while Bugatti was French made, it was brought back to it’s namesake founder’s home country of Italy before now being technically a German car as well. Actually I don’t think there’s any french car now that I’d say is impressively engineered beyond the norm.. But yes, they make nice synths lol.

    Tried it at the music store. Even if it's one of the most intimidating synth at first sight it's impressive how simple and fun it is to get into and how its workflow is so natural. I think Arturia has really become the king of delivering the best user interface. Or, better, the user interfaces that people actually want. The sound is incredible, it seems like a vintage synth but from another futuristic planet (if that makes sense). I've always seen myself spending the range of 2k for Moog/DSI only and this is the first exception for me. If I had the money I'd go buy it in a minute, it really got me more excited than the matriarch and the prophet 6. And god, I crave those synths.
    Only con: it's built like a tank (20kg!) but the keybed didn't feel on par with the rest, way worse than the one on the sub37/grandmother

    • @BoBeats
      @BoBeats  4 роки тому +1

      I agree on the keybed! On many Moog they use fatar keybeds I belive and say the Matriarch has a much nicer feeling keybed

    I had this synth for a few months, downsized my studio, and now miss it ! In my case I miss the sequencer and the world class sounds it generates.....I did get a little lost in the control panel and in too much tweaking of sounds but you have to hear it on studio grade speakers to appreciate it. So will get it agin before the year is over.

  • @Wainster
    @Wainster 6 років тому +1

    Hey Bo, great vid as always! When you bought the MB did part of your rationale use the fact that it does lots of stuff that some of your cheaper synths do - so you could possibly downsize/sell off smaller less powerful synths? I see each hardware box does have its own character/appeal, but with the MB being so accessible, I just wondered if you thought that it would replace 2 or 3 smaller synths? Keep up the great work!

  • @michaelk-j6123

    I was expecting this to be a lot more than $3000, that's really not a bad price at all. It's comparable to a higher end guitar. I miiiight see one of these in my own rather near future :D

  • @mattsynth
    @mattsynth 6 років тому +2

    I have been connecting my Moog Voyager to my modular for over 10 years. 1/4" to 1/8" plugs but that was easy to accomplish. I found that I did not use that option very much because I could never remember how the patch was set up if I needed to recall it at a later date. In other words "no patch memory". The matrix section on the Brute is fun and flashy but all my new synths have the same routing as this synth. The big nitch this synth has is the two filter section. Everything else is the same old structure but in a different format. You just cannot beat todays poly synths with patch memory.

  • @thesearethesuns

    I finally got to play one of these tonight... I have to admit that I love the sound and feel of this thing in person, and I wasn't quite sure that I would. I mostly didn't think I was going to like it because of the specific sound of the Steiner-Parker filters that I didn't think would translate into my personal music aesthetic. In addition, I was really overwhelmed and a bit intimidated by its size and options. This machine really sounds nice in terms of range of tonal palette, and the interesting sounds you can make with it, the build quality is top notch, and it's overall audio quality is absolutely stunning. In addition, like some have suggested, it doesn't have to sound harsh and metallic--it can sound sweet and rounded as well, depending on how you program it. It's just very flexible and very deep.
    I would love to get a chance to play one of the new Minibrutes once they are available... Since you have had the chance to play them, how would you compare the Matrixbrute to those in terms of tonal palette, audio quality, and build quality? Thanks!

    To anyone who thinks the Matrix Brute is complicated I would say OK, sit your ass down in front of a DX7 and make something that sounds good. They will be crying after about 10 minutes! Options on a subtractive analog synth like the Matrix Brute are actually fun to explore vs something like a DX7 where you will want to smash it with a hammer...that's what I did anyway ;) Thanks for a sweet vid Bo!

      Marshal have you tried the Korg Volca FM? It'll load DX7 patches, but you can tweak certain parameters directly and it's really good fun (great for filter like effects). Like you I have a D-05 and an SE-02, but don't write the DX7 sounds off - the Volca makes FM fun!

    • @MarshalArnold
      @MarshalArnold 6 років тому +1

      hey CordFluke! I haven't checked out the Volca FM yet, but that sounds like it could be a fun little synth! I do have Sytrus, which is an FM VST that actually is pretty cool for FM sound creation, so i mean I have love for FM syntesis, I love all forms of synthesis... just the DX7's UI is utter garbage, but everyone know that lol. Thanks for the tip on the Volca FM though that'll be on my radar to check out!

    This is a TB 3 killer I got it for that purpose and also because you can modulate the steps and really get into modular type sounds ....it sounds very clean to very powerful, although simple on the surface it's actually very complex. It's a very large footprint but something to really look into if you don't have a powerful 64 steps sequencer and you have the space for this The clock syncs perfectly to my TR eight....the paraphonic is ok..

    Hi Bo! After 5 years of owning the synth what are your thoughts on the Matrixbrute. Do you still have it today? Do you like it as much as you first did or has your love of it changed at all? Any cons to owning one?

    • @BoBeats

      Yes i have it
      Negative: its huge for basically a mono

      Lesson learned over 5 years: eurorack integration is so-so
      Would i recommend 2022/23: yes if you really want a top tier mono with great hands on control… but if you have little space then absolutely no!

      I think BoBeats says it all when he says its nearly modular. I use a couple of synths and this looks great in comparison because you can SEE what's going on (like modules). With other synths everything is under the bonnet, which is fine, but less hands on. And, the price isn't so different, look at the difference between a Prophet Rev2 and this! The only way you can get such flexibility for less is to learn SuperCollider, but you'll have to learn the language first. This (the MatrixBrute) certainly looks very interesting .. I'm quite tempted.

    Do you feel the matrix brute is a strong enough foundation for building a complete Track from. Is there enough meat on the bones of it for it to be the main device to structure a complete track from. Is there enough variables to keep it fresh .

    You don't speak of all the firmware issues that Arturia is unable to solve : go and see Arturia Forum, many are waiting for an update for more than 2 years (no firmware update since march 2017).

    Hello, i currently own a matrix brute and a korg minilogue as well which was my first synth, i am trying to achieve a fully analog setup where everything can function independently but stay in tempo ect.... from what i take it i need a mixer and something to keep tempo like a korg kaos, what would you recommend i get a drum machine as well or can the matrix brute make quality drum beats as well? I was thinking the volca or a drumbrute but please let me know what you think would be ideal and compatible because i noticed you have both my synths as well. Thanks for your time im just not sure what gear i should be looking for,

    • @BoBeats
      @BoBeats  6 років тому

      Hm, shouldn't you just be able to send sync from Matrix to the sync input of the Korg Minilogue? Or Midi from Matrix to Minilogue? If you want some third way I would look at Circuit, Korg Electribe, Beatstep Pro or yes the Drumbrute even

    • @TheValCapGroup
      @TheValCapGroup 6 років тому

      i just added a mother-32 and it appears to be keeping pace when i link the midis in chain, but in the future i think the drumbrute would be ideal keeping rhythm and tempo. This is probably a stupid question but don't you need a special sort of cable for the sync inputs and outputs?

    • @TheValCapGroup
      @TheValCapGroup 6 років тому

      BoBeats also most patch cables are 1 foot or shorter, how can i manage to connect the syncs on both of the synths without putting them super close together? Sorry for all of the questions ive been watching all your videos and you used all the same gear i have so far so i figure you would be the best reference.

    • @BoBeats
      @BoBeats  6 років тому

      +Valdis Krebs well its just one. You can make some cool varied sounds and drum sequences but essentially it is not a polyphonic or multitimbral synth

    • @valdiskrebs566
      @valdiskrebs566 6 років тому +3

      Yeah, too bad. With that matrix it would be a great interface for several sequencers/arps. Like if they could build in the BeatStep Pro (but for local sounds and ext. drums) ... maybe in MatrixPoly???
      2 MicroBrutes + 1 MiniBrute (~ $1000) = 3 Osc synth with 2 sequencers + 1 arp ... hmmm.

    A matrix is defined by columns and rows, rather than x- and y-axis. Anyway, dope video as always, Bo!

    • @BoBeats
      @BoBeats  6 років тому

      Ah, good to know! But lets get nerdy here... Wouldn't it be more correct to say that the Matrixbrute in practise uses a x/y axis rather than a Matrix? Since you are basically plotting out cordinates (?) which relates to a position on a x and y axis? Sorry for my extremely poor mathematical language... I failed basic math (but have taken advanced statistics... how did that ever work out? Can't say I remember much tho...)

    • @eliasjohanliavaag
      @eliasjohanliavaag 6 років тому +1

      Hahah, sure thing! The way I see it is that rows are sources and columns are destinations. In Linear Algebra, this kind of system is used to solve huge systems of equations. Since I'm already way down the nerdy path I can add that usually rows are equations and columns are variables. Cheers!
      Btw, Matrixbrute sounds a bit more edgy than Coordinatebrute :D

    here's the million dollar question - is the case real wood? all my other pricey Arturia hardware (incl Mini Brute) has MDF with fake wood grain laminated on... Once you take one of the keyboards apart, you can see that the laminating doesn't even cover all the MDF side panels, only where you can see it - penny pinching on over-priced equipment? Same goes for the creators of the Mini-Nova, I replaced the side panels with burred oak, instant wow effect and less Ikea look :oP

  • @TheActualJae

    Random random random question: Does it sound *that much* better than just buying any one of the Arturia Soft Synths?
    Failing that (and I suspect it'll be a toss up): Do you feel that buying it is worth it simply because it makes controlling the synth easier? Honestly, the thing I hate the most about using soft synths (I have U-He Bazille) is have to use my mouse to try and fine tune everything.... It's a pain! But is it worth a couple thousand dollars just to improve my workflow?

    • @BoBeats
      @BoBeats  6 років тому +2

      Super difficult question. I think it sounds VERY special and super hard for me to find an equivalence in the software world. Then on the other hand it has a high price and might be hard to fit both physically and musically into a setup compared to say a VST. But I always vote for hands on control over budget, if that makes sense =)

    • @TheActualJae
      @TheActualJae 6 років тому

      See, and what I often find myself wondering is if I can just go out and buy a good controller for the U-he Bazille. But the problem, of course, is that there isn't one built specifically for the U-He Bazille. I'd have to buy something that "kind of" works, but not really (especially since the Bazille simulates patch cables...).
      So then I wonder, "If someone even did make a controller specifically for the Bazille, how much would that be?" I'd have to imagine that if that controller were made to a higher quality (good knobs, heavy duty construction, etc)...it probably would cost about as much as a high quality synth to begin with ;).
      One thing I do wonder: Do you think they will come out with a desktop version of the Matrix Brute? I'd really like to just use it with Ableton Live being my main Midi controller (so I can use my Push as my main input.) Do you see Arturia doing that at some point?

    • @noiselabproject9659
      @noiselabproject9659 6 років тому +1

      The more you learn about synthasis the more frustrating softsynths become to be able to tweak, especially on the fly as you are playing so the quest to find a serious midi controller to be able to program it for that softsynth is a difficult one indeed, and even when you do that then the controls are never usually marked to their function so again it`s very annoying. Hardware Synths maybe expensive but they nearly all retain a serious value ( especially if you buy 2nd hand ) so on balance in the end it`s not really that expensive at all as you can just sell on if you want to

    What else besides the Roland jdxi has a MULTI-Track sequencer? I was hoping this thing supported multiple tracks but its a single-track sequencer. Kind of lame considering the price and all the other "multi" features this has. I wouldve prefered a 4 track 16 step sequencer. But here we have a 1 track 64 step sequencer. 64 steps... a little overkill, and ONE track. Ouch.
