Thanks for this video. I just bought a MatrixBrute. It is one of the most well thought out synths I have ever used. The aluminium pitch and mod wheels, the real wood side panels, etc. all make it look like gorgeous. Initially, it seems odd to have a hardware synth from a company that started out making software synths, but perhaps its because of that reason that the design is so well thought out.
This synth has got to be the ballsiest design imagined in recent memory. The grid/pad sequencer stuff is a blast fo mess with. Glad we are seeing it more and more, even on things like Circuit and the new Dreadbox. In a time where it seems like a race to make the first pocket analog synth, a big behemoth mono is alright with me.

THIS is by far the best video I' ve seen about the Matrixbrute. It' s incredible how you were able to create all these different sound ideas and make them come alive with the Matrixbrute. The sonic capabilities seem to be endless! You' re the first one that makes this synth sound warm and "paddish"! Exactly those sounds I wasn' t shure if they were possible with this synth, especially cause it it' s not a real poly synth. Nothing but respect for you, Sir! Thank you 🙏
Here 4 years late to say I still greatly appreciate this video as well as your others. I've barely found any sort of demos/literature on the Matrixbrute so these are very helpful.
I have a MatrixBrute, I bought one last week and I tell you what, for those who knock it, you want to have a try of one then you'll think differently, its an incredible machine and very well engineered. I love the way you switch it on and it takes unto 30 minutes before its tuned properly, depending on room temp, this quirkiness adds to the what thought has gone into this, its an amazing piece of kit, and it is capable of some really mind blowing sounds, thin, cheap, whacy, soft, fat, thick, evil, deep and the list goes on. Is it worth the price, well considering a Model D cost 3 times as much then I would say yes its totally amazing and built like a tank.
Shit! I never thought to assign the oscillator levels to each envelope! Thanks for the tip, Marc; I just made a string section so hauntingly beautiful, it'd bring a fuckin' tear to your eye!

its really sweet they had you develop presets for this. your knowledge of synthesis is inspiring. loved the demo you posted yesterday with it, i dont perticularly like the sound of these modern synths but i liked how that demo sounded and was very much looking forward to seeing what you used.
I have a studio full of some of the greatest mono and poly synths ever made, and I agree that the MB is one of the best analog "mono" synths of all time.

Forever will I be tempted by the MatrixBrute. As soon as I played one for the first time is just felt like a synthesizer of the future, just trying to bend my mind around what its possible of doing.

Please Arturia could you make a kind of expander for more voices if it's doable ? That would be the ultimate synth :)
I use mine more like a polysynth just because of the behavior of the paraphonic mode! It's like a trio of monosynths playing in harmony. How can you go wrong with that!?
I waited to watch/listen to the entire video before giving this video a thumbs up. Marc spent a lot of time demonstrating what the Brute can do besides monophonic leads. It does sound full even when dividing up the voices and using the synth for chords. I was waiting for a few ripping lead synth patches and was hoping to hear some filter sample and hold that work great for song endings. Well I didn't hear that, but I listened to the lead patch he made that sounded similar to the Mini Moog he owns. All too often musicians get hung up when buying a synth because it "doesn't sound like a Moog". So what? I have a Prophet 5 that doesn't sound like a Moog either. It sounds like a Prophet 5. The Brute can be had below the MAP price you find on the Internet. I'd say a synthesizer player can create a lot more interesting sounds on the Matrix than on a Mini Moog. Shop around, the Matrix is well worth owning. I might put it in my Music Room and only come out to go to the bathroom.
I so wish they did a poly expander rack module for it. (with display, patch selector, perhaps a couple of knobs... but the idea should be that it should be programmed on the Keyboard version, or perhaps via VST, for those looking for a compact studio version for DAW integration).
Outstanding . You could easily lose days just tweaking the MatrixBrute. The possibilities seem endless. (Well maybe bit of an exaggeration), but in sure you know what i mean. Great sounds wikid video Marc 👊
Marc, I went to PCA in Burbank to demo this against some pretty amazing stuff and couldn't agree more, it's the next synth on my list as soon as I have an extra 1.5 to 2G to burn. One that I think you REALLY need to get your hands on is the Vermona Perfourmer MKII. It's knobby, non-programmable but good god man, it's a compact Oberheim 4-Voice for $1,500 and it sounds UNBELIEVABLE. I'm up at the Saucepot in SLO btw. I know a few people who know you. This Vermona is my "Life and Limb" synth. The Matrix is a very close second. Test it and tell me I'm wrong.
+1 for the Perfourmer. Already suggested it to Marc some time ago, and he seemed to be into it. Just not one of his priorities I guess. I too would like to see (and hear) his take on it =)
As Alaska states, it's been suggested to me before! And I am very, very deeply interested. I am just constantly immersed in the new stuff coming out that companies will send me. But the Perfourmer sounds like something I would very much love, and I WILL look into it, I promise!
Marc, you won't be disappointed. I just toted the Perfourmer across the country along with a few other synths (all made it thankfully) to continue a writing project with a dear friend and former member of a fairly well known synth heavy group with a really wordy name. The Perfourmer is sitting right next to a Yamaha CS-50 and Cat Octave out-working and definitely out stabilizing both of them. It does everything so well from being played with keys to being sequenced. You can get it to sound old and drunk and in less than 4 seconds, it can be clean and precise. From mono to poly, stacked VCOs in unison or just a few as needed. Textures galore. Pan each VCO wherever you want it in the stereo spectrum. Hook it up to a stereo delay, get a snappy attack/decay dialed in and let it rain! You can waterfall the glides, and the ADSRs. Each LFO can do it's own thing or sync AND you can get FM out of it. I can even program a very close THX theme to one key strike by using the ADSR to modulate the VCOs. Polyphonic sequences for days having just as much fun as playing keys dialing in precise details. MIDI or CV. You can even use it as a 4 channel filter bank! I only find a few faults with it but those faults pale in comparison to the strengths and just how amazing it sounds. I truly think it's the greatest modern synth no one seems to know about. This thing needs more exposure. I really want Vermona to stay in business. This is a selfish plea!
Argh, will you stop? You made me drool all over my keyboard.. I've actually been lusting for that synth for almost a year, now. I still gotta buy my first synth, I've spent the last year and a half reading/studying the theory, reading and watching reviews, opinions, forums, the book from Mark Vail (which I discovered thanks to Marc, hehe). I'm pretty sure I like synthesizers, and I'm ready to make the jump and get my hands on one. And as I said, the Perfourmer MkII has been sitting there, on top of a golden pillar in my mind, for many months now. But I'm still "young", living with my parents and looking for a proper job. Their advice was to first try something cheaper, just to make sure I also like playing synths, not just listening to them. And then maybe sell the thing and get a Perfourmer. So I believe I'll be getting a Minibrute, hehe. It's got all the basics, sounds fun, is not expensive at all (in fact, might be even cheaper now that the Minibrute 2 is out) and.. and I'm afraid I'll like it so much that I won't get rid of it, and keep it alongside the Perfourmer once I get that too.. :D
Alaska1925 It only gets worse when you have an income and "invest" in synths instead of savings. If I were you, I would definitely second your thought process get an Arturia MiniBrute. That's the right choice. I learned sooo much from mine and even with these super powerful amazing synths at my finger tips, I still find myself using the MiniBrute as a go to both live and in recording. It does everything really well and has tons of control/playability that synths costing several times more don't have. They are being replaced by the MBII (which I don't like as much) but you can still get a new one on the cheap. I recommend new because people trash these things. It's such a playable synth with tons of thoughtful control that even the Vermona doesn't have. It taught me so much about synthesis and I love it so much, I recently bought a second red one because I wanted one new (my first one was B-stock). Seriously, start there, buy a cool analog delay or a sound situation with the money you save and slowly build your illness--I mean, collection. 😂
This thing is Tomita in a box. Thanks for exploring some interesting options with this. After screwing around with the Nyx more lately (and the dual filters), I'm starting to appreciate a bit more where this (the Matrixbrute) is coming from as well. Fully independent control of the 2 filters seems cool as hell...
@automaticgainsay Now that I know a bit more about the creation of sounds via analog synths, I recognize the value of the MatrixBrute. A brief history: owned synths in the 1980s, sold it all. Getting back into it a year ago, picked up a Roland JD-Xi for a basic AIO unit. Then picked up a Teenage Engineering OP-1, because I loved the idea of doing songs on it. It brought back memories of recording with a 4 track tape machine (Tascam!). It's great for sketching ideas for songs. I love doing experimental sounds, and industrial ambient styles like Throbbing Gristle and others. Got interested in modular, but really more...sound creation. I wanted to have a workflow where I could play live, but change the sounds as I go to sounds I created on the fly. I purchased a MOOG Grandmother to dabble. As I learn how each sound wave works with the other and how noise gets incorporated along with other values to make sounds, I am in love with doing just this. The MatrixBrute seems like an easy way to do just this. It's very DEEP with that Matrix. I'm keeping the MOOG as the vintage sound is classic and I love what this can do, but I really wanna hook it up to play along wth that MatrixBrute! Talk to me. What are your thoughts? Is this MatrixBrute the absolute best for creating sounds on the fly from scratch? Is it better than say a Baloran THE RIVER (haha), Waldorf Quantum or the older Blofeld, and Access Virus T12? Those are all for creating soundscapes, but I want to learn how to create them from memory. (I do love presets! I would also love to make my own). So any information about thi VS others would be great. Yes, I know that the other synths probably are not analog through and through, but they are lovely rigs for creating soundscapes, which is why I mentioned them.
The Grandmother is a gorgeous-sounding synth! The MatrixBrute is the culmination of so many aspects of historic synthesizers, which is why it is one of my favorites of all time. While everyone's tastes and needs will vary, the MatrixBrute covers so much of the functionality and sound that are sought in other synths.
I love the MOOG Grandmother. It's really the only MOOG I took an interest in. The MatrixBrute was introduced to me last year by Sweetwater. (I talked to Sweetwater on phone). Because I didn't know anything about Synthesis or Matrix, or any of it, I waited. Since then I've seen so many videos on all types of gear. I want to get lost in playing and creating sounds on the fly. (I've been loving the Baloran The River sounds in UA-cam videos. It's over 5K though.) I saw your videos and find this to be very expansive for creating. So many possibilities in this MatrixBrute. I'm just not sure if I prefer the Arturia Sound. Hard to tell on UA-cam videos.
Love this synth! It is really versatile. The only thing that slightly disappointed me was that there seems no way to do ring modulation on it. By the way, what is that thing it's resting on? It kind of looks like a shelf unit with slide-out racks. Is that the idea? I've never seen one, and it might be something I need to get.
Hi Marc, sorry but this is a bit off topic but I would be really interested to know which keyboard stands you use for stacking the Matrixbrute with other synths/keyboards (e.g. I have a Korg Kronos, Minimoog Voyager, Hammond SK1, etc.). I have tried a number of stacking stands but not found one that works well and doesn't mask/inhibit operating the controls of the keyboard underneath the top keyboard. It looks like you have some sort of tubular stacking stand in the video - where can I find one?
How do you make your own patches and sound, that is not the blank sound of a empty patch. I have one and want to use my own sounds I create. I can't figure it out, could you please help?
I was in a synth shop called Filter the other day cos my brother wanted new guitar strings (go figure), and there it was, the Holy Matrixbrute. I was thinking "Should I ask to turn it on and play with it?" but I didn't dare to...it might lead me to the Dark Side again. And btw, the Metalizer sounds metallic.
I think I will when I go back to Oslo again this weekend. It's too tempting. But also kind of scary, it's so big and huge I'll just want to take it home and play for a weekend, hug it, sleep with it... And then it's done. I do have a Minibrute though, so if I put it through a long enough delay it could sound like a Matrix..kinda.

Thank you! It’s actually a stand like an Ultimate Apex-type. The kind that sort of forms a triangle. I have an extra set of arms on this one so that it will hold three synths.

Hi Mark, I enjoyed your videos so much that I got a MB myself...awesome... I'm kind of newbye...so I'd like to ask you for some help... So these days everyone is using Daw or Pc based apps for composing, looping,etc,...but guys like Jean M Jarre, Vangelis and Tangerine dream did not have that kind of luxury ...so I start asking myself, how was their setup in old days to hold their long songs without monotony...did they apply many pre-prog sequences triggered in specific moments...I saw A video another day from a guy using a looper with a synth but I guess they did not have any back then...and prob no midi sync as well Can you clarify or hold a demo video showing the setup / synth connections etc like the old days?
Question: why would you use a 12db filter for the dual bandpass/formant exercise? I'm curious as to how its preferable over a steeper 4 pole to give more isolated frequencies?

So here’s my dilemma. I’m about to get into the synth world. I have absolutely no synth knowledge. However I’m the type that goes for the best of the best. I don’t like the idea of going cheap only to turn around and get the best later. I feel that approach is a waste of time and money. I’m a one a done kind of guy that buys gear to last for years to come. Having said all that do you feel this is overkill just starting out??
I must be an outlier here. I appreciate what's going on here but so many of these presets just sound dorky. It's all subjective but I wish you had made a couple that weren't all homages to vintage sounds of the past and more modern in style.
Yo Marc, those HD280 Pros you got aren't bad, but these days you can pick up a pair of Sennheiser hd598's on eBay for well under a hundred bucks and they blow the 280's out of the water. Trust me, you aren't hearing all that your synths can muster.
Seems like it has the same problems as the REV2. No matter how complex and amazing the possibilities are - the end result is just unpleasant. Which is sad.

Hook it up to a stereo delay, get a snappy attack/decay dialed in and let it rain! You can waterfall the glides, and the ADSRs. Each LFO can do it's own thing or sync AND you can get FM out of it. I can even program a very close THX theme to one key strike by using the ADSR to modulate the VCOs. Polyphonic sequences for days having just as much fun as playing keys dialing in precise details. MIDI or CV. You can even use it as a 4 channel filter bank! I only find a few faults with it but those faults pale in comparison to the strengths and just how amazing it sounds. I truly think it's the greatest modern synth no one seems to know about. This thing needs more exposure. I really want Vermona to stay in business. This is a selfish plea!

I've actually been lusting for that synth for almost a year, now. I still gotta buy my first synth, I've spent the last year and a half reading/studying the theory, reading and watching reviews, opinions, forums, the book from Mark Vail (which I discovered thanks to Marc, hehe). I'm pretty sure I like synthesizers, and I'm ready to make the jump and get my hands on one.
And as I said, the Perfourmer MkII has been sitting there, on top of a golden pillar in my mind, for many months now. But I'm still "young", living with my parents and looking for a proper job. Their advice was to first try something cheaper, just to make sure I also like playing synths, not just listening to them. And then maybe sell the thing and get a Perfourmer.
So I believe I'll be getting a Minibrute, hehe. It's got all the basics, sounds fun, is not expensive at all (in fact, might be even cheaper now that the Minibrute 2 is out) and.. and I'm afraid I'll like it so much that I won't get rid of it, and keep it alongside the Perfourmer once I get that too.. :D

If I were you, I would definitely second your thought process get an Arturia MiniBrute. That's the right choice. I learned sooo much from mine and even with these super powerful amazing synths at my finger tips, I still find myself using the MiniBrute as a go to both live and in recording. It does everything really well and has tons of control/playability that synths costing several times more don't have.
They are being replaced by the MBII (which I don't like as much) but you can still get a new one on the cheap. I recommend new because people trash these things.
It's such a playable synth with tons of thoughtful control that even the Vermona doesn't have. It taught me so much about synthesis and I love it so much, I recently bought a second red one because I wanted one new (my first one was B-stock).
Seriously, start there, buy a cool analog delay or a sound situation with the money you save and slowly build your illness--I mean, collection. 😂
This thing is Tomita in a box. Thanks for exploring some interesting options with this. After screwing around with the Nyx more lately (and the dual filters), I'm starting to appreciate a bit more where this (the Matrixbrute) is coming from as well. Fully independent control of the 2 filters seems cool as hell...

@automaticgainsay Now that I know a bit more about the creation of sounds via analog synths, I recognize the value of the MatrixBrute. A brief history: owned synths in the 1980s, sold it all. Getting back into it a year ago, picked up a Roland JD-Xi for a basic AIO unit. Then picked up a Teenage Engineering OP-1, because I loved the idea of doing songs on it. It brought back memories of recording with a 4 track tape machine (Tascam!). It's great for sketching ideas for songs. I love doing experimental sounds, and industrial ambient styles like Throbbing Gristle and others. Got interested in modular, but really more...sound creation. I wanted to have a workflow where I could play live, but change the sounds as I go to sounds I created on the fly. I purchased a MOOG Grandmother to dabble. As I learn how each sound wave works with the other and how noise gets incorporated along with other values to make sounds, I am in love with doing just this. The MatrixBrute seems like an easy way to do just this. It's very DEEP with that Matrix. I'm keeping the MOOG as the vintage sound is classic and I love what this can do, but I really wanna hook it up to play along wth that MatrixBrute! Talk to me. What are your thoughts? Is this MatrixBrute the absolute best for creating sounds on the fly from scratch? Is it better than say a Baloran THE RIVER (haha), Waldorf Quantum or the older Blofeld, and Access Virus T12? Those are all for creating soundscapes, but I want to learn how to create them from memory. (I do love presets! I would also love to make my own). So any information about thi VS others would be great. Yes, I know that the other synths probably are not analog through and through, but they are lovely rigs for creating soundscapes, which is why I mentioned them.
The Grandmother is a gorgeous-sounding synth! The MatrixBrute is the culmination of so many aspects of historic synthesizers, which is why it is one of my favorites of all time. While everyone's tastes and needs will vary, the MatrixBrute covers so much of the functionality and sound that are sought in other synths.
I love the MOOG Grandmother. It's really the only MOOG I took an interest in. The MatrixBrute was introduced to me last year by Sweetwater. (I talked to Sweetwater on phone). Because I didn't know anything about Synthesis or Matrix, or any of it, I waited. Since then I've seen so many videos on all types of gear. I want to get lost in playing and creating sounds on the fly. (I've been loving the Baloran The River sounds in UA-cam videos. It's over 5K though.) I saw your videos and find this to be very expansive for creating. So many possibilities in this MatrixBrute. I'm just not sure if I prefer the Arturia Sound. Hard to tell on UA-cam videos.

Love this synth! It is really versatile. The only thing that slightly disappointed me was that there seems no way to do ring modulation on it. By the way, what is that thing it's resting on? It kind of looks like a shelf unit with slide-out racks. Is that the idea? I've never seen one, and it might be something I need to get.
Hi Marc, sorry but this is a bit off topic but I would be really interested to know which keyboard stands you use for stacking the Matrixbrute with other synths/keyboards (e.g. I have a Korg Kronos, Minimoog Voyager, Hammond SK1, etc.). I have tried a number of stacking stands but not found one that works well and doesn't mask/inhibit operating the controls of the keyboard underneath the top keyboard. It looks like you have some sort of tubular stacking stand in the video - where can I find one?

I was in a synth shop called Filter the other day cos my brother wanted new guitar strings (go figure), and there it was, the Holy Matrixbrute. I was thinking "Should I ask to turn it on and play with it?" but I didn't dare to...it might lead me to the Dark Side again. And btw, the Metalizer sounds metallic.

Thank you! It’s actually a stand like an Ultimate Apex-type. The kind that sort of forms a triangle. I have an extra set of arms on this one so that it will hold three synths.

So these days everyone is using Daw or Pc based apps for composing, looping,etc,...but guys like Jean M Jarre, Vangelis and Tangerine dream did not have that kind of luxury ...so I start asking myself, how was their setup in old days to hold their long songs without monotony...did they apply many pre-prog sequences triggered in specific moments...I saw A video another day from a guy using a looper with a synth but I guess they did not have any back then...and prob no midi sync as well

Question: why would you use a 12db filter for the dual bandpass/formant exercise? I'm curious as to how its preferable over a steeper 4 pole to give more isolated frequencies?
Because formants don't have the unnaturally steep curves of 4 pole filters. Also, 24dB per octave filters don't typically have band pass options.

So here’s my dilemma. I’m about to get into the synth world. I have absolutely no synth knowledge. However I’m the type that goes for the best of the best. I don’t like the idea of going cheap only to turn around and get the best later. I feel that approach is a waste of time and money. I’m a one a done kind of guy that buys gear to last for years to come. Having said all that do you feel this is overkill just starting out??

I must be an outlier here. I appreciate what's going on here but so many of these presets just sound dorky. It's all subjective but I wish you had made a couple that weren't all homages to vintage sounds of the past and more modern in style.
Played one in person. Far from dorky. It will do what you ask of it. If it sounds dorky, it's because Marc likes "dorky" sounds :)

Yo Marc, those HD280 Pros you got aren't bad, but these days you can pick up a pair of Sennheiser hd598's on eBay for well under a hundred bucks and they blow the 280's out of the water. Trust me, you aren't hearing all that your synths can muster.
