Why Iranian Shahed Drones Are So Difficult To Track & Destroy l Russia-Ukraine War

  • Iranian drones have gained notoriety in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict due to their use by Moscow. Despite their lack of advanced technology, these drones have been employed with devastating results in Ukraine. The increased use of Iranian drones may be linked to a reported decrease in Russia's cruise missile inventory. In response, Ukraine has been strengthening its air defense strategies, utilizing both Western-supplied weapons and domestically developed tactics. On January 1, 2023, Ukraine reported the destruction of 45 Shahed drones. Additionally, it is reported that 13 drones were shot down by the end of 2022 and 32 more in the following year.

This drone was used for the first time to attack the Saudi Aramco facilities. This drone cut Saudi oil production in half. Interestingly, Saudi Arabia still does not know from which country exactly these drones were shot. The last method to destroy them in Saudi Arabia was proposed by the Americans. Continuous patrolling of the F-15 fighter was an extremely expensive idea because the cost of flying this fighter is more than 15,000 dollars per hour. According to the strange statements of the President of Ukraine and exaggeration about the number of downed witnesses, they probably still have a problem. Interestingly, the Shahid 136 drone is known as a paper drone in Iran

I have family and friends from Iran that moved to Australia. They left during a wartorn period and have become much more gentle people and highly intelligent.. While still Muslim, they have relaxed and much more willing to let people do what they like. As long as it isn't hurting others. Sure wish we could ally ourselves with them without stupid intolerant religion barking down the citizens throats.
Can't just invade such Counties, blow shit up then expect a big thank you. With no jobs, or prospects. After 'liberating' from tyranny, it is so important to maintain a non-military presence for worldly education with a focus on not killing.

At least when it comes to radar-guided AA guns and SAMs it makes sense why it's hard to shoot these down. They are absolutely tiny and have an even smaller radar cross section. You'd need the latest phased array radars to be able to even detect and track something that tiny. When it comes to IR guided SAMs, these drones also arent outputting much heat to track either. Older missiles that aren't using imaging infrared seekers but rather the old spinning shutter type seeker have issues tracking propeller driven aircraft let alone a tiny drone with a moped engine. These types of portable SAMs are quite common in Ukraine too, such as the Strela-2 and Igla. The Stinger does have an imaging infrared seeker iirc but also doesnt have a proximity fuse which may make it even more difficult to hit the tiny drone even if a lock is established.

And why exactly is Ukraine your enemy? What have Ukrainian civilians ever done to Iranians? What has their government done against Iran?
In 1992, a year after Ukraine became independent, they signed a friendship-treaty with Iran and have since cooperated in numerous projects. In 2014, Iran reciprocated by taking the side of Ukraine against Russia and refused to recognize Crimea as anything but an integral part of Ukraine. In 2016, high level consultations led to an agreement to facilitate access to Ukrainian visa for Iranian citizens.
Russia is waging an illegal war of conquest against a peaceful neighbor, a country that has maintained friendly ties to Iran literally since it came into existence. Russia is waging an illegal war against them that has been condemned by over 130 countries. Yet your government has been "convined" into helping Russia terrorize and kill civilians, to destroy their electrical grid and heating system in the middle of winter, because in exchange Russia will give you technology to build modern jets and help with your nuclear program - or so they say. As a German, I can only tell you that in our experience, Russia can be relied upon to keep their word until the day they decide to break it.
Case in point: in 1994 Russia signed the Budapest Memorandum, wherein they guarantee that they will:
      1. Respect Ukraine's s independence and sovereignty in the existing borders.
      2. Refrain from the threat or the use of force against Ukraine.
      3. Refrain from economic coercion designed to subordinate [...] Ukraine.
      4. Seek Security Council assistance to Ukraine if they "should become a victim of an act of aggression" or be threatened with nuclear weapons.
      5. Refrain from the use of nuclear arms against Ukraine.
So it would seem there is absolutely no reason to doubt whatever Russia has promised you. Especially since chances are good for a change in leadership in Russia to occur in the near future, one way or the other.
Have you ever wondered why even China refuses to supply military aid to Russia? The only two countries to send weapons to support *the Russian side* in this conflict are North Korea and Iran. Do you feel you're in good company?
Don't get me wrong, apart from your government, I don't have a bad word to say about Iranian people. Have yet to meet an Iranian who wasn't kind, generous and hospitable - usually good company and usually also quite intelligent.
Edit: Iranian food is also excellent. My favorite candy in the world is Gaz. So I'm one of the few people in the West who really suffer under the burdern of sanctions levied against Iran. Many online shops have stopped offering original Iranian goods - like Gaz - because that means they can't use Paypal (or VISA/Mastercard I assume) as payment methods. It's becoming harder and harder to source good Gaz in Germany. People pat each other on the shoulder, congratulating each other how well we've managed to handle the Gas Crisis. And that's all fine for me, but what about the unresolved Gaz crisis? But to support the brave Ukrainian people in their noble struggle, I'd go so far as to completely abstain from Gaz - or at least try to.

Ukraine supported the American invasion of Iraq with infantry , where war crimes were openly commited and the Wiki leaks stand as a proof of these hideous crimes .
This support reached the extent of 5000 soldiers .
Iran is an Islamic Republic and a mother figure for all Shias in the middle east , including Iraq .
Americans specifically and intentionally targeted the Iranian backed shi'te factions in Iraq as well as civilians .
So don't talk about things you don't know about

The plastic fuselage costs about 300 dollars, the subframe is 500 dollars... Then the sensors and electronics are only 5000 dollars, perhaps 8000. the rocket is maybe 300. the warhead is 800. so that's only 10,000 material cost. the assembly takes one man a week, perhaps 4 days, so like 500 dollars. Honestly it's super cheap. In the future I see them going to 125cc and half the size, and having multiple rockets to boost them if they detect anti aircraft activity, and for the target approach. India should buy 40,000 of these from it's own industrial engineers, because that's enough to eliminate 8000 targets.

It's just a matter of having the right equipment at the right location. Gebhardt has no problem tracking and disintegrating them with a single short burst of fire.
There's currently multiple technologies that can track these drones very precisely. It's just a matter of determining which works best and cheapest then deploying it.
The U.S. already has technology that can detect, lock on and destroy an incoming RPG round.

What is needed are old fashioned quick firing ack-ack guns, and skilled operators to man them. Gephardts use radar direction on the guns which is useless to detect the composite fibre re-enforced body of the drones. Even the propellers are wooden. Also it is likely some of the Shaheds have a passive homing fearure locking on to the radar signal and diving in to destroy it. There are pictures of destroyed Gephardts circulating in the social media. The solution is to hire and train expert duck and wildfowl hunters to man old fashioned ack ack guns ( 40 mm Bofors L60 ) or pom pom guns.

@@michaelkopischke2255 Complete nonsense. The Gepard is for some reason the only system in Ukraine capable of detecting and locking onto Shahed drones with it's on-board radar from 15km away. The shortest available burst of 2 x 3 shells is enough to reliably take out those drones. A single Gepard was destroyed. How valuable the remaining 36 systems have become to Ukraine is evident in the fact that Ukraine practically doesn't allow any video footage of them to go public, to prevent the Russians analyzing it and getting clues as to the area the Gepard is operating in. Some Ukrainian Gepard crews report shooting down as many as 10 Shahed-136 in a single mission.
This is one of the few videos they allowed to be published by RFE (Radio Free Europe). Note how they've blurred the surroundings, and most shots are close-ups or filmed from below, with only the sky visible behind the Gepard: ua-cam.com/video/_PWJ97KcnmA/v-deo.html
