    AegisMax Wind Hard Tiny Quilt, the cheap ultralight quilt from Chinese manufacturer AegisMax who are more known for their 'green bag' review.
    The AegisMax Wind Hard Tiny UL Quilt is a budget ultralight quilt that weighs just 440g (16oz) and costs $105/£75 shipped. The AegisMax quilt features 'U shaped' baffles similar to that found on Enlightened Equipment Revelation quilt, but with a sewn through design. Despite this, in my testing I didn't find any cold spots and was able to take it down to -2°C (28°F).
    For those who are unfamiliar with the concept of a backpacking quilt, it is mummy sleeping bag without the underside or the hood. As the underside is compressed and therefore do not insulate, backpacking quilts does replaces the fabric and fill with straps to save on space and weight. As a result you are able to get ultralight quilts such as the AegisMax Wind Hard Tiny that are nearly half the weight of a mummy sleeping bag for the same temperature rating.

      Hey Nathan, it’s still great. I use it less, preferring my synthetic quilt for convenience on most trips, but where volume or weight is important the Wind Hard Tiny has still been fantastic. I’ve washed it a couple of times, and the subsequent tumble dry fluffs its loft back up quickly

    I had a look at this when thinking of buying a lightweight quilt but went with the Alpkit Cloud cover due to it sourcing from ethically sourced down.

    • @RichardCheng
      @RichardCheng  6 років тому

      Can't go wrong with AlpKit for the price, love my SkyeHigh. I've read some interesting articles on the ethical down front from a country that gets down as a byproduct of food production such as China, interesting information. Of course there's still no guarantee so the AlpKit or any other RDS certified source will be more responsible

    I bought this quilt and have used it around 5 times in temperatures between 5-12 degrees Celsius. Pretty happy with it so far but don't think I would take below that temperature without a fleece liner and heavy clothes. The overall small size of the bag limits the use of a inner liner for bigger sized people. For thin people like me it was ok. Also, for taller people (above 178cm), I think the quilt will probably not covered enough at the top, especially important in colder weather.

    • @RichardCheng
      @RichardCheng  6 років тому

      Thanks for sharing your experiences. Are you typically a cold or warm sleeper? I tend to sleep curled up which may be why I'm comfortable with it down to just below freezing

    Good review. Hey, how has it held up? Animal welfare wise, is there any knowledge as to how the geese that were plucked were thriving before and during offering up their down? Did you get the standard or the long version? I am 6'3" 191cm tall so when you said there are some inches to spare, it made me wonder if this size of the quilt would suffice? Lastly, do you know whether the quilt will be able to accommodate a wide rectangular airpad with a width of 65cm? Kind regards.

    • @RichardCheng
      @RichardCheng  24 дні тому +1

      I have the standard version, with has held up fine. I’ve been told (but cannot confirm) that the down is not live plucked as it’s a byproduct of the meat industry

      @@RichardCheng ok awesome. Good they weren't suffering during the taking. I'm getting the length version because it wouldn't be nice if the quilt is too short. So do you think a wide rectangular pad is able to go inside due to the tapered lower part of the quilt?

    • @RichardCheng

Interesting thing is, my 2 kids felt warm anf i was cold at night. Probably its because i put bivvy under the quilt as a liner and kids put bivvy outside of quilt. Yours seems to have considerably more loft then mine... Mine looks partly empty and has lots of cold spots, even after letting it hang and lay open for more then a week now. Tested it out and took it comfortably to 10°C tonight, but that was ONLY when wearing a fleece + thick Cumulus down jacket + light pants + wind pants + wool socks + warm fleece beanie + 5.2 R pad + bivvy. Also it costs $120/€102 now, so, not worth it in my opinion, even if you're from Europe (like me).

  • @KB-re4ku
    @KB-re4ku 5 років тому +1

    I have one of these. Nowhere on the site did it say it was sewn-through so I disputed it and got about $50 back from the $135 I paid. Had the zipper in the center removed, then later the bottom zipper, and had some silnylon stitched on to make an uninsulated foot-box so it’s like the EE Enigma. For nights above zero but below 8C I sleep in down socks. For nights just around freezing I add a lower section of a down sleeping bag that comes to my knees and is held in by the “floor” of the quilt. Works well.

    • @RichardCheng

      +MrBrownpotato thank you! Visually, I don't think it's ripstop. Since the labels don't claim otherwise I'm inclined to think it'll be just normal sil-nylon? But as I mentioned in the video there is quite some strength in the fabric ripstop or not, getting caught in the zip but not ripping (or even causing cosmetic damage)

      very much a constant phenomenon, I store it lofted in the sack and before a trip tumble dry it to make it even loftier. The fabric on mine seems thinner or even more transparent than your bag and not as shiny, perhaps I bought a different batch and they improved on it. I could never sleep in it in less than 5 degress C. Good quilt for the money thought :)

      Honestly in this price range from china they are probably sourced in animal factory farming, maybe also live plucked. A pity, the product is pretty nice probably, but the goose and duck live plucking is so cruel. Would spend 50 more and get an RDS certified product.

    • @lauraslade9588

      I think they're both valid choices. Putting the sleeping pad inside will keep you from rolling off of it which will, of course, keep you warmer.

      This is an old video, I know, but I've seen recommendations for both methods. As a side sleeper/toss & turner, I personally like having the straps around the sleeping pad so the quilt stays in place a little better. At 6', 200 lbs, I added some shock cord to the strap so I could get enough room to sleep on my side and so there is enough strap to extend the full width of my REI Flash wide pad.
