3 years ago I dropped my live cold calling video. I turned up to a podcast and got asked to cold call a Director live on set, so I did. I even won a sale that day. But, I did not expect that video to get over 200K views.
So, I thought I'd scout the internet and find sales folk who have used my famous cold-calling opener. "Do you want to hang up now or give me 30 seconds?"
    Today, I react to them.

Memories of when American car companies visited Japan to learn about the Toyota Production System and the only takeaway they got was "we need to add robots to our production line"

Haha, that plug for your courses reminded me of Reynholm from I.T. Crowd - love it.
Love the breakdowns. The value is in the intricate details of your method, and breakdowns help reveal those details.

One minute you were Alan B'Stard, the next minute you were Dame Edna Everidge.... and I'm almost certain that I caught a glimpse of the Baby-eating Bishop of Bath and Wells! Superb video, excellent content, and you're extremely good at taking on the mantle of the person that you're imitating. Superb!

Benji, your technique is highly effective and your lessons are appreciated! I agree that i would have been nice for these sales guys to give you a nod when posting about your sales tips. Just give them a surprise sales call in their place of work and work your magic on them : )

12:49 If I connect to someone who's driving, I'll ask if they're hands-free, and offer to call back. 1: I find that the prospect appreciates the consideration, and 2: if they let the call continue, they'll either be too focused on driving, and not enough on my pitch, or worse, the other way around. I know I couldn't take a cold call while I'm driving, I'd bloody crash ☠ Excellent video by the way

I’ve found opposites and extremes often resonate well. Instead of, “Did I call at a good time?” or “I’ll be quick” I opt for something like “I’ve caught you at a bad time haven’t I?” and “I’ll give you an hour or so but no more than two.”
It’s wild how “Did I call at a good time?” almost always results in a “No, not really” type of response but “It’s a bad time for a call isn’t it?” almost always gets a “No, now is good.” After all they answered the phone, if it was a bad time for a call they wouldn’t have. There’s some reflex people have with justifying their own actions that they will insist being on a call with you was absolutely intentional and wanted.
Then hitting them with an absurd two hour limit of YOUR time when they were expecting a “quick” bargain disclaimer for THEIR time usually catches them off guard. So getting an affirmative and a laugh right off the bat really sets the stage.

Yeah, the method gets bastardized when people start copying each other without even realizing what the whole point of the opener is. It's kinda like a broken telephone. It will become useless at some point. Not because it's not good, but because the original purpose, the message, is lost.

I think when I was mentioning my self taught knowledge in my Linkedin bio, I mentioned you as one of my biggest sources of learning.
My only regret is that, I'm from a country that's highly sanctioned, and I can't ever afford your courses. I tore my a** apart asking my company to book only 1 session with you, they never agreed. Nonetheless, thank you for what you do 🍻

I'll just say, I don't ask permission. The challenge with this approach is that when you say, "can you speak/for 30 sec?" easy answer is "no." I crowbar in, and make them tell me to get off the call. The classic they use is "i'm on another call, i'm in a meeting" I steamroll through this, why are they answering then?
Then, I'll get my ask in. This usually results in their engagement. However, if they insist, "they're in a meeting" quick smart I say "when's best to speak?" An open question they cannot bullshit.
If the bullshit continues, I qualify them out. But, if a high priority prospect, I'll follow-up via email.
That said, I'm not in product sales.

Is there a risk that with the attention this pattern interrupt has rightfully had and its uptick in use, that it could stop being one?

    • @benjamindennehy
      @benjamindennehy  8 місяців тому +3

Logically, think that through. You call someone and they say what? "I know that opener" OK, Then what?
They still have the same choice.
Statistically, how many sales calls are made a day? Billions I reckon.
I think it's gone many years to go.
Plus everyone has heard: "Its Benjamin from ABC company how are you?"
      Yet it still survives.
