I bought the Slinger bag last fall. There’s a lot of topspin with the one wheel spinning in there and when it shoots out a good ball it’s a very heavy topspin that picks up pace after the bounce. Good preparation for my next match with Rafa😉 I’m waiting on a case of pressureless Wilson Trinity Pro tennis balls which should improve my practice.

One of the biggest differences in good vs poor forehand technique at the rec level is the non-dominant arm hanging limp as the forward swing begins. This can occur even if the player uses two hands to start a good unit turn, but then the non-dominant arm goes limp and drops down instead of clearing out of the way, across the body, opening the chest and allowing better weight transfer into the shot. If the non-dominant arm goes down and limp, it becomes the body fighting the body as it rotates into the swing to contact the ball. I understand there is a timing issue involved regarding the clearing out of the non-dominant arm and rotating into the shot. I just think that it's something that sometimes doesn't get enough emphasis when learning the forehand. What do you think, Nik?

I am 5.0.player , very strong on baseline on both sides so my goal was simply to improve my shots and get to a higher level. This ball machine is perfect but many options are simply to complicated to set and then used on the court..Imo these options are excellent to use as a phisical practice but to improve your technique are simply useless .

Opinions differ depending on a number of factors. Why would someone like Niks student want an advanced machine when the slinger bag can provide all that is required
The idea of a ball machine is to work on technique and grooving your shots not playing live matches which with coaching and Match play are tools that you have to incorporate to improve
Slinger bag is good value, practical and portable

Ive had my slinger bag for about a month. Ive been playing tennis for about a year. I found the amount of topspin to be a bit troublesome at first, but you know, most rec players where I play (and the standard is reasonable, nothing amazing) play with a lot of top. So I think its a question of upping your game, moving your feet, setting up early and watching the spin. It is do-able. It does take a bit of adjustment, but overall I find the slinger bag DOES improve your game. Nice to see Coach use it in his session with Anna

I taught myself a lefty forehand thanks to the Slinger. Took a few hundred balls but it's becoming solid. Key for beginners (my left arm most definitely is) is to move the bag in front of the net and turn down the spin rate.

His forehand is beautiful, but not a common path for most recreational players, I guess.

It think it would be better if she started with her racket down flat instead of in her hand for ready position. She ends up having contact with the ball with her wrist backward and/or straight out, making her racket face open. This will help with her wrist bring forward rather than backhand when she meets the ball. I’m no expert but my coach showed me this technique and it has helped me fix my open racket face.

Like every male player up to 3.5 does? And, every woman up to 4.0? She needs muscle memory for each stroke at this point.

Let her hit on the 2nd bounce if ball lands too short. When she has to move up, her balance is completely off. Let her learn the proper swing first. Also, on her forehand, get her bicep away from her body more. Often times her elbow/ bicept is too close to her body, jamming her swing. Also explain to her that the swing is in a figure 8 shape. Perhaps all of this is too advance for her at this stage, but I think she will pick it in no time.

Can a tennis ball machine reduce the workload of a coach?

  • @jebronekitty

It's nice looking at a player just learning how to play the sport. You learn and reminisce about what you use to do. However, I feel like people are here less about getting information about learning about tennis... I wonder if a larger guy with no athletic ability in sweat pants and baggy shirt would get views.

Slinger machine generates too much topspin, especially for beginners and even intermediate players. You could see Anna being late as other players she normally plays with do not generate that much topspin.

It doesn’t when you adjust it to a low angle and slow the speed down.

Slinger bag is not adjustable enough. Too much spin. Much better options out there. Imo

Hey Nick, I am sure you know by now that that ball machine is really not good for students or really anyone. The machine has crazy excessive topspin and no ability to change it. Other than that a great idea. Why they didn't fix that before manufacturing zi will never know.
