Thank you guys for doing this song! I grew up on older country bc of my grandparents & Vern has always been one of those guys that was so underrated imo. His voice is so powerful & this was one of his best songs
I am a 58 year old single male. I never married and I have no children. It was always just me, my parents and my older brother. I lost my Dad in 2012, my Mom in 2014 and my older brother passed away last year. He also never had children. So it is just me now. I live all alone and if not for my friends I don't know what I would do.
Chiseled in Stone is a reference to losing a spouse to death. You don't know lonely until you see their name chiseled in their headstone... implying they are NEVER coming back.
...............people ask me is there ANY special wisdom I can impart to young couples - we just celebrated # 60 last month - I always say this - from a man's perspective, you should ALWAYS remember how beautiful she was when you married her, and, view her through those eyes...have enough things you agree on(neither of us smoke, never alcohol, regular Christian church attendance - you get the picture -.) AND we laugh all the time...smile and laugh for sure!
He’s just saying you don’t know about lonely until your wife or husband has passed away and thus the old man’s wife’s name being chiseled on a grave stone. She passed away.
Great singer, Horrible person. I met him once when I was head bouncer at a Country and Western night club. He was rude and arrogant, cussed out a band member because he stepped forward on the stage ahead of his own lofty position. All bad enough, but he took a liking to my jacket and basically forced my boss to order me to give it to Vern. Nevermind that I paid 85.00 out of my own pocket for it. I was never reimbursed nor thanked. I do not like the man.
I am sorry to hear that. I always liked his music. I once approached a tennis pro back in the day when I was a teenager attending a match. He was the British tennis pro John Lloyd. I asked him very politely for his autograph and he rudely snapped at me, "No after the match!" So I waited until after the match and went up to him again and asked him and he ignored me. Mind you he was a spectator he wasn't playing that night.
@ShelbyFarrow i always heard one of tge worst things was meeting your Heros. You often find out who they really are. Vern was not a hero of mine but after our first meeting I knew he never would be either.
My dad loved Vern Gosdin. This is one of my favorites.

Ephesians 2:19 (KJV)
Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God;
