Robert Smith's personal favourite is the cover recorded by American alternative rock band Dinosaur Jr (...) The band's frontman J Mascis explained, "We recorded it for a compilation album, but when we finished it we liked it so much we didn't want to give it to them." Smith said, "J. Mascis sent me a cassette, and it was so passionate. It was fantastic. I've never had such a visceral reaction to a cover version before or since," and even said the cover has "influenced how we play it live".
Hey, this is my favorite cover of Just Like Heaven. I am a huge Cure fan, and though I agree that many people who cover The Cure do a very crappy job, this song is not one of them. If it sounded exactly like when The Cure does it, then it wouldn't be a good cover. Covers are supposed to be different, the band covering a song should twist it with their own sound. Kay?
Ah, to the haters, someday you'll grow up to find that the world is not all sweetness and light and pretty dress-up bands. To each his own--if humor and passion isn't your thing, so be it. This is the shit. Period.
this live version of just like heaven is one of my favorite ones ever. Dinosaur Jr in my opinion made their version way better than the original. i watch this video almost every day. rock on
Dinoesaur JR doing The Cure. This couldn't be more perfect! And what I like most of all is how they've taken the song and really made it their own, instead of just porting the song. Some serious killer wah action going on too!
OMFG incredible cover of one of the best rock songs ever written. When two things as awesome as this song and this band happen at once, good things are bound to happen.
the absolute best cover of this fantastic song!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

I'm a huge fan of The Cure and Dinosaur JR. This video is the fusion between these two groups ! GREAT Great right foot on the Wah !!! I'm going to see that live in Luxembourg the 25/08!
@Lemonhead86 the best part of your statement is "i liked a band called Dinosaur Jr ".......yes in concert there is a band playing...but all his music is recorded and performed by him and him only.. J.Masics IS Dinosaur Jr..
i was talking to a friend and i said i liked a band called Dinosaur Jr and he burst out laughing at the name. He has no idea what a fantastic band he's missing out on. DINOSAUR FUCKING KICKS ASSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!
Just got back from seeing them in Oxford. Wow, what a surprise that as a last encore they covered one of my favourite Cure songs... As memo8774 said, so cool to have Lou back with them, it's been a long time since we've been together in the same room ;-)
Totally agrred with that. in my opinion the best cover ever. D ino jr put a lot of the bands formula for not make a poor copy of the original song, like always the band do.
That's the point. They covered this song years ago - way before Kurt Cobain etc. Note the similarities, the Fender Jaguar, the Rickenbacker Bass - almost as if Nirvana copied them.
The whole reason of doing a *COVER* is to recompose it in a way that makes it their own... because cloning the sound of the original would be pointless! Good examples are Jimi Hendrix's version of Bob Dylan's "All along the Watchtower" and Johnny Cash's take of Nine Inch Nail's "Hurt". They're the same songs, but redone in a way that adds their personality to it! IMO Dinosaur Jr. does this cover admirably!
@klacker47 And they (D Jr) only did it kinda by default because I think their song "freak scene" pretty much follows the same chord progression, n that.
@hahafail3393 Your missing the point, Dinosaur Jr. was arguably the first band to say screw sensibilities and crank it up to 11. They made it ok for an alternative rock band to shred and use over the top effects. They took the mold, said fuck this shit, smashed it then set it on fire. Id would be willing to bet AFI lists Dinosaur Jr. as an influence.
thousand times better thank the others covers. When you cover you have to pass your own style not just to copy carbon the original. They do it perfect. And the wa wa is tooooooooooooooo much exciting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

❤
I cant tell you how many times people have told me J Mascis is the greatest guitarist of all time.
nymetsrock he doesn't make many top 100 lists. he's underrated
He's in the Rolling Stone Magazine top 100 list of greatest guitarists at #86.
I credit j mascis and Kevin shields for inspiring to buy a jazzmaster
😂squier got a not very expensive J Mascis artist signature jazzmaster, that makes me want one more badly
I like how Dinosaur JR has always covered this song in their style. If I wanted to hear it done like the Cure i'd just listen to the original

There's a few versions of this on UA-cam, and I've heard them do this song live a few times... but this version is AMAZING! Love it.
They have aged physically but not mental. I know this from 10 years ago but I just saw them 3 months and they are still just as amazing.
Dinosaur jr is just amazing .
I love these guys and this song. J is a genius. Thanks Cleve to introducing me to this way back in the 90s.

He doesnt over use anything. This is their way, like it over leave it. I really like that wah-tremelo sound.....bit funny-spacy sound
Amazing band covering another amazing band's song, the result? Freaking epic.
OMFG incredible cover of one of the best rock songs ever written. When two things as awesome as this song and this band happen at once, good things are bound to happen.

Love the wha wha pedal, it's nice to hear this song with a harder edge, most people try to go softer with it and this is better.
I'm a huge fan of The Cure and Dinosaur JR.
This video is the fusion between these two groups ! GREAT
Great right foot on the Wah !!!
I'm going to see that live in Luxembourg the 25/08!
Dinosaur Jr and AFI shouldn't even be spoken about in the same universe.
Dino Jr along with Sonic Youth and Nirvana Perfected the 90's
Me too. Great time. Great song. I just love it!

J Mascis is amazing. I swear he is getting better as he gets older.
The Wah-Wah makes it an awesome song
@Lemonhead86 the best part of your statement is "i liked a band called Dinosaur Jr ".......yes in concert there is a band playing...but all his music is recorded and performed by him and him only.. J.Masics IS Dinosaur Jr..

:)
That's the point. They covered this song years ago - way before Kurt Cobain etc. Note the similarities, the Fender Jaguar, the Rickenbacker Bass - almost as if Nirvana copied them.
youre the king typojay you rule smoke weed till you die DINO RULES!
Absolutely transcendent.
And they (D Jr) only did it kinda by default because I think their song "freak scene" pretty much follows the same chord progression, n that.
Also, it has been said, by Robbie Smith no less, that he loves this cover.
This is... awesome.
Definitely one of the best if not the best Cure cover I've ever heard (there are tons of them, so I can't be sure, lol)
The whole reason of doing a *COVER* is to recompose it in a way that makes it their own... because cloning the sound of the original would be pointless!

God I FUCKIN love this song!
Welp. Cant compete with that guitar, guess ill switch to bass.
@Nercrophage EXACTLY. Not liking this video does not equate with not liking Dinosaur Jr, folks.
@klacker47
And they (D Jr) only did it kinda by default because I think their song "freak scene" pretty much follows the same chord progression, n that.
@daltoni7
hahaha....that was great!
yep. hence the reunited original lineup.
The Cure. Everybody should know that, jeez.
i agree!
wow, you really, REALLY hit the nail on the head. The 90s wouldn't be shit without those bands (excluding Radiohead)
I am going to see them on Friday! :D
Guaauu, ¡menudo pildorazo! El tema de The Cure, magnífico; la versión de los dinosaurios..., una fuerza de la naturaleza. ¡Dale, daleeeee!
Two COMPLETELY different styles. You can't even compare them.
damn, this was pretty cool. i would like to thank an inividual who recommended them to me. :)
