- "When I’m playing music or I'm writing music it's the closest I can get to what I'm hearing in my head. It's the closest I can get to what I'm trying to express, or what feeling I'm trying to slowly chip away at inside of me." In this episode, Ernie Ball artist Shaun Morgan of Seether discusses his inspiration with guitar, his love of playing, and his relationship with Ernie Ball from the beginning.
String Theory is a web series from Ernie Ball that explores the sonic origins of some of music's most innovative players.

This guy would be great jamming with Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic for a Nirvana tribute
I second that notion
Fuck yeah
It should happen. Goddamn I think people who never saw Nirvana would embrace it.
They should have had him there at the HOF induction. That would have been pretty sweet to have seen.
He should've played with Krist and Dave at the Rock and Roll hall of fame for the Nirvana tribure instead of Joan Jett.
If ANYONE should front a Nirvana reunion it should be Shaun! THE most underrated rock lyricist around today!
Well said. So true.
A reunion is impossible with Kurt. It'd be a glorified tribute show.
we have to realize this guy wrote one of the best songs on earth FINE AGAIN
It's an OK song for sure
Fine again is amazing but I feel breakdown is just as good
Seether underated damn good band
Karma and Effect stills gets heavily played in my car.
Same dude! I have that album play in my car on replay.
*this guy is absolutly amazing song and riff writer, seether rules!*
Song writer...yes
Riff writer...not so much
Yessss!! Favorite string theory by far. Seether is my favorite band ever. And Shaun is such a cool dude.
daron malakian too
Pfft Cantrell
Seether was an early influence on my playing. Disclaimer is one of the few albums I learned cover to cover on guitar (I’m a bassist) and got me interested in modulation effects.
Haha yes! When I was in middle school I learned disclaimer II and Karma and effect front to back.
I’ve always liked his tone. Killer band
Remedy sounds so badass with that distortion
That tone is amazing.
Lane McDonough Agreed
Mesa rectifiers all the way,
the way he talks about nevermind is how i felt about AIC.
The way Shaun talks about nevermind is how I felt and feel about disclaimer II
Hopefully Shaun sees this, but he said a lot of stuff like this in the Holding Strings album, and that helped me start writing songs, and making music and moving on from a difficult time in my life. This was wonderful to watch
So weird that he would say that. Seether has always been very therapeutic for me and has always been my go to for help getting me out of a funk or bad place. Keep it coming please!
After a Bad day it really is a release to listen to Seether or Some early 3 Days Grace
I’m so grateful to have Seether in my life 😘 the world was blessed on 12/21/1978 the day Shaun Morgan was born 🌺 you have helped me more than you’ll ever know & I could never give you enough praise in this lifetime to show my gratitude 🙏🏼 Thank you Shaun Welgemoed!!
Honestly one of the coolest and most genuine humble people you could ever know.
His guitar sounds amazing
It’s a shame that these generations make bands and artists like these so underrated and a lot of people have never known of musicians such as Shaun Morgan etc.
Didn't realize Shaun is using Music Man guitars now, cool!
🖤Shaun Morgan 🖤
Its actually Shaun Welgemoed. He is a South African and so am I.
Great video. Bought the Ernie Ball Paradigm strings... they’re great
So... Hes south african, but has an almost Australian accent, he's weird but badass.
What? We’re not even close to sounding like the Ozzies
He sounds southern and Australian to me
I always say the South African accent is like.... Australian x German divided by English to the exponent of Dutch. lol
And when he sings he has an american accent
Shawn Thompson the Ozzies accentuate their words with a pitch - very different to South African. We’re closer to a British accent, depending on the region. Like saying that Americans sound like Canadians....
Honestly seether is one of the most underrated bands of all time
"1st note to the last, i felt like i wasnt alone. this dude understands me, this music was written FOR me" ......
....... legitimately word for word, I've spoken these exact lines about Seether.... granted, I'm not even a musician at all(yet),lol but still... the second i gave this band a chance, went out n bought the Karma and Effect album, next thing i kno id just plain given up on rap/hiphop. lol. and basically never looked back. nooo complaints :)
this dude understands me these songs were written for me...this is the EXACT reason why I love seether
Shaun has been there since I was born.
Awesome!!! Shaun Rocks.
My favorite artist of all time
Such beautiful guitars!
Love Seether so much, thanks for writing amazing music Shaun. No, thank you for existing.
Huge influence and for me represents so much of what I would want to express in my music.
Shaun morgan was my very first introduction into hard rock that got me into loving all of this .... thanks man
Amazing!!! love Shaun´s tone and sound...Seether is amazing!!!
Your music saves lives
Some great songs he's written. Always some fantastic hooks..
I love that crunchy sound
One of the realest dudes in the industry right now! Canine riot indeed.
I'm 13 and this man is literally my hero lmao. I've been going through a lot lately and Seether's music lets me know I'm not alone.
So relatable!
Cool dude and cool band I listened to in high school in 2002.
Legend band
WTF this guy still sounds like a South African after how many years of being out the country? What a winner. Love you Shaun.
Seethes music affects me deep in my soul.
I'm a drummer and don't know much about guitar, but Shaun is a good rhythm player and his guitar work is all it Should be. He's solid. However where Shaun's talent shines is the fact that he's one of the best song writers out there. I've been listening to Seether since Disclaimer when I was 8 years old, and to be honest this band has gotten me through some very fucked up situations in my life. That and their tone is just badass haha. I'm more of a death head, but I'll never forget where it started for me and that's hard rock. Shaun is the Kurt of my generation and it's obvious that Kurt is one of his biggest influences
Im ready for some new tunes from shaun and the guys after this dang corona hell!
Great discussion from a great musician, Saron Gas will always be my disclaimer to Seether
Awesome! Now we need one with Ben Burnley...
I bought my first set of Emie Ball strings at the weekend, they are worth every penny
I started playing bass didn't think I would play music or didn't know I would get into music. Now I play bass
Cool dude
Well keep that anger flowing Because YOU ROCK.
I'm obsessed with this dude in an uncreepy way...
Cool interview, would've been nice to hear more about his gear, guitar choice and such, last I knew he was a hardcore Schecter guitar brand guy...and in this interview I see in Shaun's face, a resemblance to Jimmy Fallon with a thicker face and full on beard.... rock on!
Shaun I'm your fan lml.
Love this Band! Karma and Effect and Disclaimer II the greatest!
What’s the guitar and specs?
Real deal dude
I always use 10-46 Paradigms
Good video
I can really relate to his childhood farm stories. Bit different, Cornwall Vs South Africa but similar
Not too worried about the strings! Mooi manne julle maak ons nogsteeds moer proud! Se vir Dale ek se howzit! Sal weer saam ry!
We need Adam Gontier and Corey Taylor
I would absolutely love to see Adam in one of these.
Yeah, Corey Taylor. Greatest guitarist of the 21st century.
@@gabrieljlemay not the greatest but hes good
@@gabrieljlemay I'd say his rhythm work in Stone Sour is about as complex as Shaun Morgan's or Tim Mcilrath's, and they've both have had a string theory episode. Corey really isn't a stretch at all for this series, even though he isn't primarily a guitarist.
@@gabrieljlemay 🤣🤣🤣
Please come out with a new album soon.
That would be awesome!
What happened to his Schecter guitar 😟
His guitar is listed in the Vault on Schecter's website, which is for old or discontinued guitars. My assumption is he isn't working with them any more. I'm sure he still plays the ones he has in his possession, but I don't believe they will be his primary guitars anymore.
He plays the music man gear now
I wonder if he will always be playing the Dustin Kensrue model since it is similar to his signature model? Single pickup and single control.
It just broke me when he told the story about his brother
3:44 So true
Wow he play EBMM guitars now? Awesome!!!
He does! The StingRay RS Guitar.
@@ernieballinc It looks like the Kensrue model in the video, is that correct?
It’s no wonder he sounds so much like Kurt Nirvana inspired him. Definitely favorite moody post grunge rock band. Will consistently listen to Disclaimer Karma and Beauty in negative spaces
I know this is an Ernie Ball video, but with that being said I’m honestly surprised Shawn never played prs.
In the very early days he did, but he and Dale got signed on with Schecter and used them up until last year I'm guessing. I have no idea what Dale is playing now, but he might still be playing his Schecters
The riff at the beginning is a rip of Freak by Silverchair
We need a James Hetfield episode please.... it'll be awesome ♥️♥️
Watch some kind of monster dvd. It was the entire band with a counselor crying about being in the same room witch each other... Disappointing. Rather hear trivium cover metallica than actually listen to metallica.
@@davidcopus1341 people like different things and you don't have the power to make others do things as you wish. Grow the hell up. It would help you and everyone you come in contact with :)
@@hariprasadanathazhath3233 and here you are telling me what to do... Double standard don't ya think? Sinces james doesn't have one of these vids I suggested he watch their dvd... I used to love metallica. But I can't stand lars and his crying. And that's pretty much all he does so I gave a spoiler it's disappointing. You can listen to Corey feldman and his band for all I care... His music is shit but I'm sure people still support his nonsense.
@@davidcopus1341 my man. Firstly I don't think I asked you to do anything. Any person with any sense will know that others have their own tastes and opinions. And just because they're different from yours doesn't mean they're less than good. And if you dig Trivium then great! Enjoy them. If you hate Metallica, then don't listen to them. As simple as that. But it's not the sign of mature person to go around the internet asking people to do exactly what you do. You do your thing and I'll do mine. And PS I've seen some kind of monster so you've not spoiled anything for me.
Would love to see Shaun do a Nirvana tribute. He’s sooo good at singing Nirvana somgs
2:41 is when he starts talking about the Nevermind Album
Careless whisper s sounds!
Surprised Shaun's music man wasnt covered in this video
It's there! The StingRay RS Guitar.
Is Ernie Ball still located in San Luis Obispo California? Like It was when I lived there.
Saffas represent!
I just cant understand why grohl and novoselic didnt call morgan when they reunited for that concert
Because their thought process for the HoF was that Kurt believed that women were the future of rock (which he did). Honestly the only one that did well for either that one or the CalJam show was Joan Jett. I didn't really like the dude from Deer Tick that much. But someday we can only hope that they ask Shaun. If they came to Seattle I'd sell both nuts just to go
I think he should be the new front man for Nirvana! It's only logical!
Wait does this mean hes with musicman now? Cuz hes signature guitar in shecter is in the vault now
I’m trying to look for Shaun’s signature guitar online. It’s no where to be found, nor on Reverb or EBay. Can someone explain to me what happened?
I would not be alive if not for SEETHER
💖🎤🎸🎶🔥
Wish I could find a way to mute the interview just so I could hear the guitar play in the background.
Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic, and Pat Smear need to do some songs with Shaun down the line in the future. It should happen soon.
Still feeling that 4 years later 🤗
i love how my man Shawn, when he TALKS, has sucha accent ..but when he SINGS, hes just as white america soundin as i am haha i think thats neat
Anyone know the song he plays at 4:30
Love the beefy slinky strings except for that plain 22. Rather have an 18 or 20
You can totally tell how much they’re influenced by Nirvana. I love seether. Still making great songs. Never knew they were South African til just recently
This question may have already been answered but what song is shaun playing at 3:23?
“Fine again”
Captain Beefheart holy shit
So what distortion/drive pedal does he use?
Amp distortion, boss delay pedals. A Pog octave pedal, mxr chorus,
Anyone know the name of the song at 6:50?
I think it's "Against The Wall" from their Poison The Parish album
invite chad kroeger from nickelback next
I’m drawing a huge blank what riff is he playing at 5:20
Nobody Praying For Me
Dylan Hutto that’s right thank you so much
@@forsakenalpha2012 No problem, I had the same issue with Against The Wall, took me 3 days to figure it out 😂
What’s the second song he played?🤔
He played Remedy first. Second song was Fine Again 😊
Luke Karolak thx dude. 🤘🤘🤘
Seether is what you get when Nirvana has sex with Soundgarden.
Fucking love this band.
Yeah when I was 12 I heard seether disclaimer
