Anyone else feel like Haneul wants to join the US Army to become a naturalized US citizen?
He thought that the moment he saw that he could become naturalized.
They both should. I have no doubt they can handle the mental aspect of it, considering the things they've already been thru in their lives. Hell, they could probably handle the mind games of Marine Corps boot camp with no problem. If they have any concerns about the physical aspect of boot camp, they could just join the Air Force.
One thing I do wonder about is if there's any concern that NK might have agents running around SK looking for defectors, especially ones that say negative things about NK. I would think that SK would have a system in place (name changes, etc) to hide these guys/girls from NK. But if they did, I would think advertising who you are on YTube would be the first thing they'd want you NOT to do.
@@quasimotto8653 The ROK does have a system in place according to the other videos on this channel to hide the identities of defectors. It's why even though there are 25,000-50,000 defectors in the ROK, you only see maybe a few hundred.

@@quasimotto8653 Well, unlike the North, I'm not exactly sure what the policy is. What I do know is South Korea is certainly latching onto the ability to have free speech, and they proved they aren't giving it up after they ejected Park Geun Hee (the woman president) from office over a lot of issues.
South Korea probably has no policy on the defectors going on UA-cam because to the ROK, the defectors are Korean, so they're afforded the same rights as normal citizens once they get debriefed and set up with temporary living quarters.
I remember a video when they said that they only got paid 100 won the entire time that they served in the military. When they hear that the lowest rank in the US Army gets paid 2 million won, they are shocked. I wonder how they will react when they find out that is per month and not in a four year term?
Fun fact. 1,300-1,400 is E1 pay a month. That’s 1.5 million won. Basically yes they get paid the same amount of money. A million won isn’t much in usd. It’s around 850 which is a PFC pay or E3. As a E4 I make around 950-1000 a check.

My favorite part was when they said we get "free" food. I audibly scoffed.
They would be in shock with all the high tech US military weapons we have. like the gears, guns, tanks, attack helicopters, drones/fighter/bomber planes, aircraft carriers, etc.
Plus the weapons not spoken of.
Then we have our subs as well which are also pretty top of the line

@@TheTempest73 You are exactly right, Justin. I spent 6 years in the Marine Corps and for a good part of that time, I had a Secret Clearance because of some specialized Comms work I did. And there is no doubt in my mind that there were plenty of things that I was still not privy to. You've probably heard the phrase, "A need-to-know basis". Now, high ranking people at Area 51 come to mind when I try to imagine someone that might be in the know. You've seen Independence Day, right?
As an average American, I have a lot of respect for these fine gentlemen. What they did to leave North Korean took a lot of courage and willpower. I really wish them the best, and hope one days that all North Koreans can have all the simple pleasures that is Westerners take for granted. Good luck, guys!

but if they did escape then the other dudes are right, their families are most likely killed or in a a camp. they do this to families to discourage anyone else from defecting and to keep all the men they can get aswell as to somehow prove the governments power and no mercy ideology. pretty sad

It's crazy with all this bullshit racist evil circulating around in our country in 2020 and 2021 but, as a Dine Native American, if we all watched videos like this, and realized how fortunate we all are and how much we could help other sports given or fortunate position, and celebrate the things that make us the same which also make us laugh, we would be less privileged and more appreciative. As a Native American, seeing what these North Korean defectors have to go through, and seeing how much they appreciate our western culture, I feel so proud to be an American regardless of what has happened in the past. But I will always remember my history, I hope we all do so we don't let something like this happen again. We were almost wiped out because of scientific ignorance of bacteria and viral infections, and religion also should not be a reason to pursue war because that was also the impetus that lead to my people dying. But we are still here. So we need to make the best of it. I love ayou all my American comrades. And thanks to our veterans for keeping up an image of brutality and honor that warrior societies can respect and admire. I just wish we could all carry ourselves with a little more dignity and honor for our history, and for our future.

NK is notoriously stupid when it comes to economic decisions, they spend all their resources on showing power they don't actually have. I'm glad these boys made it through the DMZ.
This was very interesting to watch! I really appreciate Kangyoo & Haneul sharing their honest opinion/reaction. I am amazed at the differences. They did not even bring up benefits like tuition assistance should an enlisted person want to get a university degree. This degree could lead to a promotion in the military or a better opportunity when the person is discharged. Thank you Dimple!

I wish more Americans could visit extremely poor countries to see the massive opportunities and wealth here. Seeing a pair of conscripted 16 yo kids with fully automatic rifles standing on a street corner is unnerving.
I still want these guys to hear how many bullets the US Army has its Soldiers fire every year. Let alone the infantry.
@Ethan Kunz Yep, the table is I believe 18 for zeroing and a minimum of 40 for the qualification. There is a discretion of a 10 round familiarization fire at the discretion of the commander/OIC.
At least that's what it used to be, and that's just in a support role.

This is one of the reasons I think the Soviets would not have been as effective as they are commonly regarded as being. They seldom fired real ammunition during training.
Most of the bullets i fired were machine gun rounds (i was a tanker)
Ethan Kunz That’s the advantage of being an U.S. soldier, we have the second amendment, allowing us to become way better acquainted with our weapons, in comparison to soldiers of other countries. Besides I’d say most of us, if not all, enjoy going to the range, and fuck around. Safely fuck around😂.

No disrespect, but these men don't need to serve the US. They need to help protect South Korea. They are the perfect soldiers to serve a country so near so much evil.
@@LeoArmada Not to come off as arrogant but I very much doubt the requirements are that hard, leaving a lot of room to be able to pass. The NK soldiers are malnourished kids and most would probably not be able to commit to very strenuous activity because of that.

Holy mother of God. Those men were going into training with loaded weapons and NO protective gear? I never experienced a rogue soldier freaking out and turning his weapon on his fellow soldiers, but we were there voluntarily! Not only that, accidents happen! It's amazing that a country this small and this oppressive has any military at all.
Observing the ideology and ability of the state in question, it's not unrealistic that they would maintain a lax standard on safety in attempt to keep up with the rest of the world, specifically the US. No, it's not fair to anyone put in that situation, not the people being trained or the trainers themselves. It's not even fair to those orchestrating the maneuver. All of it is manufactured by the indoctrination of the ideology. The losses of life are also to be at the hands of that same indoctrination. None of it is okay.

Jon, my sentiments exactly, it’s been awhile since I was on active duty but never heard anything about overtime pay 💰 There were reenlistment bonuses though. Also I lost 50 pounds in 16 weeks at Fort McClellan where the drill sergeants would start screaming at us to leave the mess hall because we had been in there too long. I generally hadn’t even sit down at a table yet 😉

They mentioned in one of their previous videos that the DPRK Navy has a better life than the Army. The Navy had better gear and they're more nourished since they can fish at sea.

Navy officers don't get free food, they have to pay their own toll for eating in the wardroom.
Pretty much the opposite from the DPRK military.
@Johnston Steiner The wardroom is communal so everyone has to contribute an equal amount of funding for the whole officer echelon, and thus any single officer is unlikely to starve under that circumstance. However, I forgot the source but there seems like at least one incident occurred where the wardroom ran out of supplies (spent their money on overpriced ingredients before leaving port) at sea and the CO had to let the officers eat food from junior rates' galley.
Have them react to some of our "super weapons" like the AC-130 and Warthog

To answer the question about shooting while wearing glasses, military issued glasses carry the lens at a different angle than the ones you get from a civilian doctor. You can look straight ahead through the gun sights without folding your neck like a pretzel, because the glasses aren't angled down for reading.

They should know basic English. I've heard from alot of defectors that north North Korea teaches English as a mandatory class in schools. Specifically British English because the US is at all times depicted as a monstrous dystopia

I heard one of the defectors say that he had learned some English and it was indeed British English. He also said that not everyone learned English, some people learned different languages so they could possibly utilized in other regions of the world or as interpreters in North Korea. It's all very interesting either way. Thanks for the info.
I served in the US military from 1987 to 1991. I entered voluntarily (of course) and I am proud of my service. I'm also proud of you guys for defying that totalitarian regime. What kind of military can you have when most of your soldiers are there unwillingly? You are correct that we have a superior force. Not because we have better training, but because we have soldiers who are passionate about their training. Congratulations to you men for finding a better country to defend. I pray for your friends and family left behind, but I don't condemn you for escaping. Best of luck to you, and peace and love.

In case any Koreans are watching there's Boot camp/ Basic Training for recruits THEN when you complete that you are sent to advanced training regarding your MOS. Basically the job you are assigned, whether it's Infantry, Artillery, Engineers, Logistics, etc. THEN you are sent to your unit.
There are a lot of allied and enemy soldiers that comment that Americans fight like rich men. The US is the first major power to have a fully mechanized military, bring their own food from home to avoid relying on foraging, and weapons tend to spray a lot more bullets.

As an American, I love our South Korean friends and the People of Asia as our hearts have fought with them for Freedom over the past many years. My extended family member dies at Palawani and my mother knew people that came back from the Bataan Death March.
Americans are fighting a soft war of ideology and the only tools are to show the real America to those such as yourself to react. I hope you get an opportunity to watch some of the great stories of sacrifice Americans had made in past wars such as WW2, Bosnia ETC because I think those people show how much extra my people are willing to give. The USA is a country of refugees.
I have friends whose parents/ or themselves are refugees from Iran, Vietnam, Korea, China, Venezuela, Cuba, Iraq, and other places. If the world knew more about what we really share and you can react I think it shows how much alike we are really. Thank you I enjoy your commentary very much, You guys make me smile because your so well grounded and honest :)
So glad you two made it to South Korea! I think the people of North Korea are good, but the government is a mess. I served in the United Nations Command in Seoul, South Korea with the US Army and really enjoyed my service there. It's a wonderful country!

I have friends who came from other countries, joined our military, and became US citizens in lightning time!
They should take them to a training camp and show them what US military training is like in person. It would be great to see their reactions and have them interact with US troops.

Hello guys; I just started watching your videos this weekend! I love them. One about aircraft carriers mentioned military exercise one was called “Team Spirit.” I am a former US Marine & spent 3 years in the Pacific. I took part in Team Spirit ‘85 in the year 1985 of course. 2 weeks at the DMZ training with ROK Marines. A little before your time. I will all the best for both of you!

It was interesting learning a little about life in NoKo. Glad you guys are safe. Military, anywhere, is a test of medal. Blessings for all you guys across the globe. 💖
Y'all forget to mention some things:
1.) veterans that are disabled from military service get monthly checks from the Government, and the amount of money you get depends on how disabled you are. Many vets get such high checks that they can live off them comfortably without needing a job, and they get them for the rest of their life.
2.) veterans are given special military discounts in several stores and restaurants that are exclusive to those who served.
3.) Depending on the state, the government will pay the college tuition for both you and your children after a certain amount of time living there. In Wisconsin, Veterans and their children who live there for 5 years are granted free collage so long as the collage they choose is in the state.
4.) on Veteran's Day, many restaurants will serve veterans free food all day.

I'm curious what happens in North Korea if you do not pass the physical requirement for the military when you are 17/18 years old? What if you are too heavy, have bad eyesight etc? Do they put you to work doing labor or some other job? Are you treated like a failure?
I imagine there would be a lot of shame brought dowm upon the individual and their family as well . China is installing a system of ' Social Credit ' . A similar , but less sophisticated system in NK , would be doom upon them and their kin unless they were already politically connected through the Communist Party .
Get them to react to footage of A10 warthogs running drills and firing their guns.

1:59 If the South Korean military works like it does with us in the US Army, they likely have a smaller prescribed "insert" set for their protective eyewear and gas masks. They're made of a combination of flexible and hardened plastic. Being inserted into the equipment, they're a little less likely to get scratched up.
