Can the DJI Mavic Air 2 handle high speed winds of over 50KPH?!? I set out to find out. And when I asked myself if doing it over water was a good idea, I didn't pause to finish thinking about it.
In this test I put the DJI Mavic Air 2 to the test in multiple modes from normal to Active Track, sport modes, and regular take-off and landing fun. Plus how it handles with a wee bit of water spray and more!

This video sold my brother. A week later I’m returning my new Mavic Mini and buying this one. Not only can it handle the wind which makes it much more usable, the camera and features are awesome for the price I think.

Perfect!! You have done the test I have been waiting to see... I hike a lot and some of those ridges get super windy. Getting rid of the Phantom 4 pro to get this. Much easier to pack around. 😉✌🏾

There are some cliffs I want to film at where the wind means I don't think I could get away with the Mini unless I was lucky with the weather. Air 2 looks like it can cope, though!
I wouldn't advice trying Mini in cliffs in a windy weather. The reason is that in cliffs you have wind gusts circulating vertically and for them Mini is like a sail. My Mini was flipped over by one of such gusts in dunes, fortunately I found it. Actually, for me winds and wind gusts is one of the biggest reasons to look for a new drone.
@@MinrasDotCom That's a good point: wind does not just have to be horizontal: there can be turbulence, especially near other objects or undulating terrain.

Usually over water is ok, at least in US.
@@toadlguy As it is in the Netherlands, there are different rules to where you´re allowed to fly.
@@DuckFreeFree Nope, it's just outside the no-fly zone. I checked the official Netherlands drone map, and re-confirmed it 3-4x. If you go a bit further into the shipping area/harbor (or a ways down into the nature preserve), then it's a no-fly zone, but not out on the pier. Today I learned that the wind limits in the spec appears to refer to having a straight horizon in crosswinds but I can still fly in stronger winds. The landing problems though...
Yeah, it was crazy, but it makes total sense: The sea-water flying over the concrete basically make it look like active water or moving ground. Now...it not wanting to shut off...

I have had that with my Mavic Mini, also over water, but not as hairy as this! You just have to do what it says, fly home manually. I was going backwards at times so I zig-zagged and that was enough to get back. I have now decided that my Mavic Mini is too light for flying in a breeze. It's light and its top speed is lower than a big boy's drone which makes it a bit too much of a handful in the wind. This Air 2 is heavier, more powerful and capable of a higher top speed so it should fly better in medium winds. You shouldn't be flying any drone in seriously high winds. Also because this app doesn't let you do RTH in high wind it is important that you always know which way home is, if you go out of sight you must have a functioning map. Flying a drone is a bit like riding a bike, you can take your feet off the pedals or take your hands off the handlebars. But if you try to do both you'll regret it. If the drone is in line of sight there's no need to panic, assuming you're not running very low on battery power. Just bring it in closer, or failing that get it over something that you can crash-land onto.
@@MartinWillett Mavic mini is able to handle quite strong wind. RTH may be a problem cause it tends to climb into even stronger wind and speed is limited. Also it has limited tilt angle in other modes than sport. Today I tried to fly against strong wind (it was not comfortable to ride a bike against it and it limited downhill speed) and it slowed drone to 4m/s 40 meters high.
In my experience worst is turbulent wind over hilltops, drone starts to wobble.
@@pavelperina7629 the mini is amazing! I mean all these drones do have a limit with wind. They are all susceptible unless you have a really big drone. 500 dollars more for this is too much

Hope you have a can of wd-40 all that salt spray in the drone and your cameras...
This test was called: "tempting the devil"
For a first test on a new drone I always choose a spot with fail-safe conditions.
"Know your drone" as a recommendation in this case did not prevail.
It's a calculated risk. If he had great footage of a brand new drone being lost he'd have far more hits. And there's no point in having a video of a new drone that's been out a month. You have to get the video up soon after the launch date and if it's a bit windy that means go and make a video where it's REALLY windy.
