DJI should include 4k option on hyperlapse on the air 2 firmware update. It will make the processing much easier to handle and maybe, can produce better quality thank 8k
I think it's jumpy because of the interval and because it's flying (kinda) close to the trees / ground, so the jumping can be easily noticed. I think the 8k was made to take hyperlapses where the subject is maybe more distant, like a mountain or something, so the jumping wouldn't be so noticeable...
Indeed, flying lower can make Hyperlapses tricky - but as noted (and shown), the 1080p ones at the exact same height weren't an issue. It's *all* about the 6-second recording rate.

Honestly the most informative, useful and groundbreaking MA2 video to date. Thanks for exposing the flaw in the 8k hyper lapsing. This certainly wasn't on the highlight. reel for DJI. It sounds like they might be able to fix it with a software update. As you said. Go pro and other companies can do it
Good video, as usual. I like the fact, that although this is of course a DJI sponsored vid (normal people don't have the Mavic Air 2 yet), you are not afraid to highlight design flaws (like on the follow-mode vid). This channel is one of the rare sources of information to trust before vids of real users, who actually paid for the product, are out.
I'm not defending DJI over their unpolished hyperlapse option, I'm just saying that 8k is well worth for hyperlapses, and those, even though they should came SOC just fine, are workable lapses!
For all you confused people, this hyperlapse mode is exactly like in the Mavic 2 and just like in the mavic 2 you can just save the RAW images, don't use the unstabilized video generated by the app and edit&stabilize the footage in post - that's how all the pros get smooth hyperlapse footage from a drone.
Chill Flights For Fun do you have confirmation you can save Raws with it? It doesn’t use the same app as the Pro 2. I only shoot raw Hyperlapse with my Pro 2.
DJI should really update the software and force 8K to a raw image sequence, that way you get the good quality plus raw edits. That little drone is trying to do just too much when processing everything on-board.
First of all... thank you! You make really good and informative videos :-) Most of the things DJI has put into this drone is marketing gimmick. There is 3 things that i value the most in this drone. Size (still smal) way better connection and range, and the 4K 60fps
Great video all around, but a huge part you missed in the analysis is the fact you were analyzing these next to each other unedited. The entire point of more pixels is more information and thus when you go to edit images or video you can expose more of the detail such as the flowers in the one video or the detail in the trees, etc. You were simply just analyzing unedited frames versus one another. There’s some other good videos on UA-cam showing how regular HD images and video can look somewhat better at times compared to 2-6x the pixels before editing in lightroom or darkroom but when you go to edit the higher resolution images you can bring out way more detail and not wash the image out compared to the refusal 1080p images, etc. So in that regard you missed that part of the analysis of this comparison between the types of hyper lapses, though you did nail how much the sensor plays a role. Thankfully we now have the sweet spot for this drones sensor with the new update that brought us the 4K hyperlapse. Though with that the same phenomenon exists when comparing 1080 to 4K as you’ll have more data to pull out of the frames when editing it. But this information you shared is probably most useful for those who don’t want to edit anything at all and want the best looking on average, though to those people editing is so easy these days with a tablet and downloading lightroom or darkroom so to those of you who don’t want to bother please give it a go as it’s never been easier for novices! Again, great video you content is definitely helping me gain a better grasp of things!
@@Dcrainmaker - I would have been just as happy with 6k hyperlapse that is usable vs 8k unusable. They could probably use that little bit of extra real-estate to stabilize footage. 🙄
Jumpiness probably due to being too close to subject. Make a large object further away the subject for 8k hyper lapse and the results will probably be a lot better.
Thanks for this :) it pains me to say, but this confirms that I need to wait for the Mavic Pro 3. The bigger aircraft, larger sensor and lessons learned from the Mavic Air 2 will make all the difference with the MP3. Cheers.
The problem on 8k is the timeframe between shots, hope 4k option comes with 2-3 seconds as would address the issue whilst keeping quality... my Air 2 turns up tomorrow.... cannot wait to play
Great Video! I dont have an Air 2 (yet) but regarding the differences in exposures between the 4K video and 8K Hyperlapse....maybe the HDR option is not available when in 8K Hyperlapse mode?
The jumpy video has more to do with wind direction in relation to flight path. Flight into the wind, less jumpy... Flights across the wind had a lot jump for me.
Haha...I wish! Unfortunately I don’t think they’re giving us that flexibility to control the imaging pipeline! I wish there was some middle ground though, like a 4K option.
@@Dcrainmaker you should be able to turn off front/back and side collision avoidance in the general settings, and see if maybe that makes a difference in the image quality. Definitely worth a try if so much of the image processing pipeline is taken by APAS...
Thanks for all your hard work and clear explanations! Seems like the 8K needs a lot of work in post launch firmware for it to be a viable option. 4K on the pro 2 gives a much more professional and smooth output. The interval of 6 secs is too high of smooth footage I think. But the processors no my quick enough to analyse and write it to the SD card.
it's recommended that you do those hyperlapse high up and far away from your subjects. some of your footage is way to close, any wind will make your footage unuseable.
I'd much rather have him go the speed he does so the message gets across quick and clean instead of the snail pace some youtubers go at. Their videos are such a drag. DC - your pace is fine mate. It keeps the videos interesting, quick and to the point.
Ahmed Tahir why does it need to be quick? Why is everyone in such a rush? Idiots everywhere. Quality production doesn’t need to be forgotten just because you’re in a rush 🤦🏻♂️
MOV is less compressed than MP4 so if you want image quality then that's what you should record in. It would be interesting to see the difference, probably won't be massive but it will eak out everything available give you greater post flexibility.
What's making the video so jumpy is that the Mavic is unable to maintain a constant altitude. It's constantly drifting up and down from frame to frame. This causes the perspective of the image to change a lot because you are so close to the ground. There's no way to correct for this in post production. This is made even worse in the 8K mode because there's so much time between frames. Try some hyperlapses with the drone much higher and I think you'll find that it's a lot better.
Exactly. Also make the drone travel further between shots. That was travelling like 50cm between shots which it probably can't do accurately. Better to really get it high and get it moving a lot between shots to get it smoothed out.
I was about to write the same. It's a very wrong assumption mentioned in the video, that stabilization in post would make it better. There's no way to stabilize if perspective has changed, it's physically and geometrically impossible. The drone would have to maintain the strait line within centimetres threshold. You would do much better with a long pole or a cable way if you wanted jitter-free hyperlapse.

Do you think you'd see the same shaky issues if you flew it higher but kept the same FOV inclination? I wonder if it'd at least look more stable.
Probably the reason it's 8K is so that you could crop in in post and the stabilization will be much better. Would be interesting if you could test that.
WARNING TO ANYONE PURCHASING THE MAVIC AIR 2 for APAS 3.0 - Active Track, Focus Track, POINT OF INTEREST FLYING - will only work at frame rates of 30FPS or Lower at any resolution setting. The DJI Fly App will not allow APAS 3.0 - select target until you set your frame rate to 30FPS or lower. It's a real problem considering these automated tracking modes are primarily used by many for tracking moving subjects. DJI need to publish this in their User manuals.
My question is, if DJI sacrificed the main cameras bandwidth 8K so the obstacle avoidance features can work, can you turn them off and gain better performance? I was confused whether that was tried, I know it was addressed.
I shot lots of footage in high winds for my original Skydio 2 review, but didn't go out and do a specific test where I stand/talk/etc through it all. But I'm currently slated to record it next Monday. The winds are lookin' even nastier than my Mavic Air 2 video, so it should make it more fun. Of course, weather dependent!
@@Dcrainmaker I wonder if they could do a 4K version. Or.. what store all the images for me. SO I could also make mine on a PC if I wanted. The path setting and smooth slow programmed flight would still have value.
blee As for me, I just sold my Mavic Mini and ordered the Mavic Air 2. As much as I enjoyed the Mini because of its weight and simplicity, the Air 2 gives me more options and has a better range which was the main reason for me to upgrade. Worrying about flying behind objects because it might loose the signal is a real struggle. It always came back thanks to the return to home function but it pretty much destroyed the experience for me at some points.
To be honest, that didn't look great in 1080 either. Why on earth would they give only 1080 or 8k? Hopefully it will get resolved with firmware update. Hyperlapse isn't a dealbreaker for me, doubt I'd use it much but either way, if you're going t0 advertise a feature, make it work. Great videos by the way, really enjoying your MA2 stuff.
DC Rainmaker DJI recommends the drone height to be over 30m for hyperlapse. You were flying only 15m. Can you try flying higher and take a 8k hyperlapse?
I agree that subsequent FW will address the crappy 8k HL. My question is...Can you select/change various exposure setting and more importantly...shutter speed??
Phew, that was a breathless 500 fps delivery! I'm a native English speaker but I really struggled to follow the plot, and I had to rewind 4 times to see the split second view of where you select hyperlapse mode. Good stuff but maybe put the same information in an 18 minute video instead of packing it into 14:36
Agree..A good video by the commentary need to slow down so it can be understood better. like you, I had to keep rewinding to hear what was said a second time.
Ihave to agree with Ceb Carb the framing makes a lot of difference. The jumping is caused by difference in height between frames. 6 seconds is a lot longer to try and maintain the same height. Also there is no way software can smooth out perspective changes which is what you are getting with height changes.
Great video, just one question: can you have the drone save all individual images (ideally in RAW) or are you stuck with just getting the final video? Also, is it possible to save your waypoints for reuse? I saw some DJI representant say that it was but I didn't see it in your video.
Also why is 8K less exposed : its because its using the 48MP pictures who do less well in bad lighting conditions due to the nature of the sensor - and he is recording in cloudy conditions
By chance does the Maverick air 2 pick up sound when recording or are you issuing something separate to Record your voice with?! just because when I start filming my flights what I should use for sound to record my voice with !!
Hi ... great video, thanks for making those. I loved your high-wind test - really turning point for me to actually get an AIR 2 in addition to my Mini. Regarding this video, I am wondering is the exposure difference due to lack of HDR? The time lapse videos appear to me as if they are not HDR. I don't know if the 8k time-lapse pictures have HDR into them. I know that 4k videos only support 30 FPS for HDR mode. If you do 4k 60 - you don't get HDR. I imagine that 4k60 is the limit and every other frame is different exposure for HDR support. Should perhaps compare 4k60 with 8k time lapse for exposure difference in high dynamic scenes. And if you happen to re-test this - should probable try high altitude scene without any shadows - just to eliminate HDR from the comparisson.
If you look at this shaking, is is extreme at close objects and not visible at the horizon. Transferring this to the camera position I think the MA2 is varying its height from photo to photo. Can you confirm that? In this case a hyperlapse looking at only far objects should look much better.
Hmm, the "grey blocks" portion of this video has me greatly concerned. I do not own anything with windows, am I just not going to have access to hyperlapse for my channel? I use premiere pro on a 15" 2018 mbp for my channel and everything else I own is Linux.
@@Dcrainmaker thanks. I sure hope so. Everything else I have seen about the upgrades to the original looks amazing and I'm probably ordering one tomorrow.
Hi DC Rainmaker, this drone is missing the "advanced gimbal setting" for pitch speed and smoothness. What is happening ?!?! even the Mavic Mini have it. Please put pressure on DJI :) and this is a good subject of new video :)
Excellent video. Have you done any testing on the new update for hyperlaps where are you can save the raw files. I have been unsuccessful in finding any raw files with the new update.
Can you please answer my question? If 2 years ago UA-camrs were saying how great the Original Mavic Air was flying why shouldn't I save some money and jump on a combo with mavic Air??? I understand the glitch of wifi but if I am not planning to fly more than two miles is the Mavic Air still reliable???
I really like the original Air. It is a very different drone though. It has a lot of very useful features that the new Air 2 doesn’t have. Apart from it’s much more portable design, it can be flown with just a mobile phone, or completely by itself using the hand gesture control of smart capture. The range limitation doesn’t really bother me, as I nearly always fly in line of sight. It also uses the Go 4 app, which seems to have many more features than the more simple Go Fly app. I will definitely keep my Air 1, I might consider the Air 2 as an additional drone at some point in the future it it becomes CE approved and after some of the bugs have been sorted.
DJI should include 4k option on hyperlapse on the air 2 firmware update. It will make the processing much easier to handle and maybe, can produce better quality thank 8k

Please do skydio 2 wind test. You said on the previous video that you did wind test for all the drones then where is the video for skydio 2 wind test?
I shot lots of footage in high winds for my original Skydio 2 review, but didn't go out and do a specific test where I stand/talk/etc through it all. But I'm currently slated to record it next Monday. The winds are lookin' even nastier than my Mavic Air 2 video, so it should make it more fun. Of course, weather dependent!
Got mine. Can’t wait to try it
This is literally the feature that excited me the most. I have been trying to get this effect with a Mini and sped up video. Sigh
Indeed, I was super interested to see how it would work!
@@Dcrainmaker I wonder if they could do a 4K version. Or.. what store all the images for me. SO I could also make mine on a PC if I wanted. The path setting and smooth slow programmed flight would still have value.
Hey @k.edwards after using the mavic mini would u advise me buying it or should I just save up and buy the mavic air2
blee As for me, I just sold my Mavic Mini and ordered the Mavic Air 2.
How did the mini video turn up? Samples?
To be honest, that didn't look great in 1080 either. Why on earth would they give only 1080 or 8k? Hopefully it will get resolved with firmware update. Hyperlapse isn't a dealbreaker for me, doubt I'd use it much but either way, if you're going t0 advertise a feature, make it work.
Great videos by the way, really enjoying your MA2 stuff.
Thanks!
great analysis. Good explanations for your points.
Great, detailed information. Thanks!
DC Rainmaker
DJI recommends the drone height to be over 30m for hyperlapse.
You were flying only 15m. Can you try flying higher and take a 8k hyperlapse?
The key thing though is that doesn't matter. The 1080p Hyperlapse was fine. The limiter of every 6-seconds is the broken point.
Great video! Great information! Thanks! I got the Air 2 on the way!
I agree that subsequent FW will address the crappy 8k HL. My question is...Can you select/change various exposure setting and more importantly...shutter speed??
Awesome video 🙌🏽 keep it up 👍
Phew, that was a breathless 500 fps delivery!
I like your videos, thanks for your great work!
Ihave to agree with Ceb Carb the framing makes a lot of difference. The jumping is caused by difference in height between frames. 6 seconds is a lot longer to try and maintain the same height. Also there is no way software can smooth out perspective changes which is what you are getting with height changes.
I agree. It is the perspective changes causing thar bumpiness not the gimbal.
Great video, just one question: can you have the drone save all individual images (ideally in RAW) or are you stuck with just getting the final video? Also, is it possible to save your waypoints for reuse? I saw some DJI representant say that it was but I didn't see it in your video.
no it seems there is no option to save every single image like in de mavic 2 pro. hopfully this will be possible in the future.
Can we just save individual photos and stitch them together later using desktop software?
Nice video. I wonder if the jumping up and down etc has to do with the drone being so small and light?
Nope, pretty common in the bigger drones too.
Nice video, it would be cool if you could find a way to stabilize those hyperlapse footage. Cheers
Wow superb video. Thank you. Where is the location?
Also why is 8K less exposed : its because its using the 48MP pictures who do less well in bad lighting conditions due to the nature of the sensor - and he is recording in cloudy conditions
As literally shown in the video, that’s not the case. I showed a perfectly exposed 48MP still taken seconds before.
By chance does the Maverick air 2 pick up sound when recording or are you issuing something separate to Record your voice with?! just because when I start filming my flights what I should use for sound to record my voice with !!
Great video, makes me wanna upgrade my mavic mini
I enjoy your flailing hand movements
what an awesome video, we both share same activities, i ride bike, fly drone and make videos, i ride road bike mostly, whats your preference
That’s tough! For general use I’d say Mavic Air 2, but for pure sports footage then Skydio 2 is tough to beat (albeit impossible to get).
Why did you not lock the exposure and lower the EV down to -0.3 or -0.7? The image seems overexposed...
Half is overexposed, half is underexposed. The normal 48MP photos correctly exposes all parts. This doesn’t.
Would be nice if they gave us a 2.7k and 4k option for hyperlapse.
Yup, agree!
Great video !
When shooting the hyper laps do you get individual photo files or just a video file.
Just video.
Hi ... great video, thanks for making those.
Can't you return it in sport mode to the aproximatly starting point of the hyperlpase before starting the recording to save the slow return time?
If you look at this shaking, is is extreme at close objects and not visible at the horizon. Transferring this to the camera position I think the MA2 is varying its height from photo to photo. Can you confirm that? In this case a hyperlapse looking at only far objects should look much better.
Hmm, the "grey blocks" portion of this video has me greatly concerned. I do not own anything with windows, am I just not going to have access to hyperlapse for my channel? I use premiere pro on a 15" 2018 mbp for my channel and everything else I own is Linux.
Not sure. My guess is it’ll be fixed widely in a firmware update.
@@Dcrainmaker thanks. I sure hope so. Everything else I have seen about the upgrades to the original looks amazing and I'm probably ordering one tomorrow.
Great video !!! What video options are available for circle and course lock?
Hi DC Rainmaker, this drone is missing the "advanced gimbal setting" for pitch speed and smoothness. What is happening ?!?! even the Mavic Mini have it. Please put pressure on DJI :) and this is a good subject of new video :)
Excellent video.
Have you done any testing on the new update for hyperlaps where are you can save the raw files.
I have been unsuccessful in finding any raw files with the new update.
Not quite yet.
For the average person with limited editing knowledge that 8K Hyperlapse is useless, yikes! Awesome video in explaining everything in detail.
Thanks!!
The original mavic air is an awesome drone and if you're not planning on flying in very heavily congested Wi-Fi area then you'll have no issues.
Excellent, I thought I would be able to get away with a Mavic Mini but I would like some autonomy👍🤠
Thanks for this was helpful informative post.
Thanks!!!
