Chinatown is my favorite neighborhood in NYC. When I went to FIT for my photography degree back in the day, I had a professor who gave our class an assignment to choose one neighborhood in New York and photograph it for the semester. I chose Chinatown. The photos I have will forever be some of my favorites. The people the energy and the food still fill me with joy each time I visit.
I remember in the 80's my mom worked in the garment district. We moved from Avenue U in 1993 into Chinatown proper, and then into the housing projects near by. Chinatown raised me, educated me and I will always love these few blocks. I haven't moved far, and part of me hopes to one day come back and run a business and continue the legacy of Chinatown from all those that came before me.
This is so beautiful, all Chinatowns around the world need a revamp and it's up to the community and collaboration! Looking to make an impact in my local area of Vancouver, BC and bring more attention to the beauty of such a place for youth and the city.
Totally agree on the point of documenting things. It might not be so eye catching, but it holds a deep meaning behind it and the value increases by time!
Am I the only one who thinks the shrinking of Chinatown is not necessarily a bad thing? In some ways it is a success story, as Chinese immigrants gained affluence and moved to surrounding (usually suburban) communities. The character of neighborhoods always changes as communities move out and other communities move in.
