Just found your channel and it`s an absolute lifesaver! I hadn`t really clicked with Rossetti and was perceiving all of her poems in ways that didn't really make sense, but after watching your videos I am now beginning to feel confident with them! I know lockdown is coming to a close but I would love if you continued to upload these videos as they definitely help me, and no doubt they are helping others, So thanks!
Thanks for the encouragement! Very glad you've found them helpful. I am planning to do some more, plus a series of films about CR's context once school gets going...
thanks for the upload! really enjoyed your take on Rossetti, like you mentioned it's pretty hard to enjoy her writing since the majority of her poems are quite grim and reflect the situation that we are currently faced with, so it's refreshing to see an empowering poem in the midst of despair. question: wouldn't Maude Clare be a good poem to compare, as its 'Nell' could be interpreted as the ' moll or meg' of 'No, thank you, John'?
Definitely! It would be an ideal comparison. She's empowered, but subject to the limits placed on her by her society. There's similarities and differences in voice and presentation, certainly, but also lots of interesting common ground for comparison. For Rossetti too you can sense the conflict between self-realisation and 'fitting in'. It's a key factor in the breakdown she suffered, I think. But totally agree, it's a relief to read work from her that's got that strength of spirit in it.
