I had a 1972 Datsun 510. Bought it in 1984 for $100. The guy who sold me it thought the tranny was blown, turns out it just needed a clutch adjustment. Loved that car, so fun to drive and easy to work on. Two years later I loaned it to my brother and he crashed it and it was a complete write off. I next bought a Datsun B210, another good car.
New born Datsun. Well done!!. These cars beat the tougher Africa roads. My old friend from Africa used to own the same model. Lots of good memories with it.
Makes a big difference tying in the strut bar to the firewall and best to do the same on the rear of cars that have rear struts also. A lot less flex and car responds faster when you turn that wheel. Car is way nicer than it was when new. Great video thank you.
Great attention to detail on this build, and well thought out. LOVE that you drive it like it's meant to be. I have many of the the same mods in my SR20 swapped auto-X 510, Also a '72 BTW. T3 coil overs, Willwood Brakes, Subi R180, CV axles, full roll cage, fuel cell, stock fenders over 205s, but Momo wheel though. IMO JBC's rack&pinion kit is the best money I've ever spend on a 510. Not that I haven't enjoyed bracing, spherical jointing, bump steer spacing, and Troy Ermishing the hell out of that rinky dink steering box, but DANG! Jeff is my savior. Hope you get some serious money, because you did it right.
Well done! I had one of these in 1980 paid $200 for it from a lady that owned a salon she also had a 240z which I got running for her thus the good price in 1980. It was an awesome car cept already rusted out by that point. I loved it handled well it sparked something in me. Havent found another i can afford but mayhap oneday ill find one lurking in a field.
"I'm an older guy now" says the dude who looks about 28, LOL. Fantastic build! Really nice work and perfect choices (IMHO). Thanks for the 'long' video. Real car nerds truly appreciate you making the effort..Liked and subscribed.
Wow you did a superb job well thought out. Hope you find the time to take it to the track and run it. Had a 72 datsun station wagon, I loved that car, had really custom built upholstery. Hated selling it, would have made a great sleeper fast car.
Nice dime. I like how you did your exhaust. i thought about doing it the exact way you did, on my 69 2 door. Flex joint up front, braced on the cross member so it won't rattle in that dumb hole, and a removable rear section. Nice
Beautiful 2 door 510! Well engineered and sorted.....I like the basics of keeping the S2000 drivetrain basically stock.....that should be all the power you need with reliability built in. I'm tempted to inquire about purchase but I better not......I have a 240Z and a 260Z....both rust free! 240 is a Turbo Toms in process.....260 is a mostly survivor with some intake and exhaust mods sitting on the shelf.....I'm having a hard time getting to these without adding another Datsun to the mix. Thanks for sharing your beautiful project!
Such a cool, clean build! I have been toying with putting a S2K motor in my wagon. I am still trying to understand using the factory ecu and cluster and modifying the tank for FI.
Aaron the Data tin Guy............wow, wow, and wow! Beverly And I watched the entire video. Fabulous job, Aaron! So impressed with your vast knowledge of everything, and we noticed the perfection in every aspect of it. Great job! Kudos to you! Uncle Steve.
I had a buddy in high school (1972) that bought the same car in the same color and we used to drive it all over. Even though it was just a 4 cylinder, it was a peppy engine and lots of fun. Weirdest memory was when we were coming home from the first California Jam concert and we were lost. Suddenly my friend saw the exit for the Orange Freeway and swerved across 4 lanes trying to make the offramp. Unfortunately all he managed was to force 2 bikers off the road. Then they came after us and we tried escaping in a high speed chase. Traffic ended up stopping and the bikers parked behind and in front of the car. One of them went to the drivers window and started pounding on it. My friend rolled the window down and the guy reached in and punched him a few times before taking off again.
Great video! I owned a 1973 same colour same wheels back in the early 80s. I took out the 1.6L and installed a 2.0L 5 speed and lowered. Fun car. I now own a 2004 Honda s2000 fun summer car. I often think driving my s2000 how cool it would to put this drivetrain in a 510. .
Wow, I had a 1971 Datsun I got that was from a barn BUT it has all original insides and outsides . Oh and it was in Oregon as well. Seeing your car , at least the outside of it made me think back to the good old days of when I had my 4 door, 1971 automatic Datsun... Great video, don't sell that car. YOU DO NOT NEED TO HAVE A CAT Converter. They don't check , well they don't check 71, Not sure about 72.
Dude, really sweet ride! You'd never know so much custom work is in it just by looking at it! That VTech sounds beautiful 🥰. You've created a beautiful Frankenstein. Parts from at least 4 or 5 other vehicles 🤣 Really nice work my friend 👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿
Thanks for the video, good job on your Datsun 510 , I was looking for a good donor car for A electric race car, rear wheel drive light nimble and punchy and I think the Datsun 510 will fit the bill , I will engineer the battery system for hot swaps so I can run lighter batteries should be an interesting build when I'm done I will put it on UA-cam too
That's a cool car in good shape I know mu uncle bought a Z240 back in the early 70's and before he could get it the dealer had to get body work and paint done because when coming over from Japan some of the cars sat on deck and the salty spray and saltwater would rust them before they got here so the dealers had to take care of all that before selling it.
200whp NA is about right with these cars and that width tire. I recently tuned my car down to try and keep traction under control. I was making over 325whp boosted and it's a lot of fun, but not very useful in many instances. It's nice to see a detailed look at your build. I might do one at some point on my car, but I keep changing things, so it won't ever be up to date 😂 #4G63510
Brilliant work, great video showing us all the detail, I would like to buy the same mirrors if possible, any chance you could let me know where to buy them online as I am in Australia . What model bmw do they come from? Thanks for the inspiration: )
Good day this is an awesome build i am building a 510 as well and need all the chrome trips and weather strips can you direct me as to where to get these.
Bravo man, do you want to take on my 2 wagons next 😂 Seriously, this is a phenomenal transformation. I’m dying to have my ‘71 & ‘72 at this level of quality! Do you have somewhere where I could message you a question or two about your build?
Hi mate, your build is stuff if dreams so congrats. Interested in your advice re wheel fitment for stock 510 guards. I'd like to go 14x7+0 rear and perhaps 6.5 up front. Any thoughts based on your experience? Cheers
I would use 7inch wide all around. No reason to go to 6.5 in the front. You can make 7 wide work just fine. Your application will be different than mine because I was not using stock hubs on the front, I was using modified 280zx struts and hubs and adjustable control arms as well. I also dialed in wheel fitment with small spacers to get it just right. I could aldjust camber and lower control arm length to get the wheels fit in the front perfectly. But no matter what, you should roll the inner fender lips front and rear...preferably before the car is painted.
@@Sookigarage The original L series had a cast iron block, cast steel intake and exhaust manifolds, and lead battery up front. I would imagine this 510 is very near a 50/50 ratio.
Hey Everyone, I sold this car in January of 2023. But please continue to enjoy the video!
What a beauty! May I ask what you sold it for?
What do you think it cost to have it finished?
@@chrisg2630 I did all the work myself except for the body and paint. There is no way to apply a cost number to the complete restoration/modification.

One of the nicest 510 builds I’ve ever seen.
Tremendous build. I had no idea I wanted a Datsun 510, but I am smitten! Well thought out and executed. Great job!
New born Datsun. Well done!!. These cars beat the tougher Africa roads. My old friend from Africa used to own the same model. Lots of good memories with it.
Nicely done...clearly built by a mature human who is done fooling around and knows exactly what the formula is...
This formula was my dream 510 build. Put together in my head for over 20 years.
always a soft spot for these and this is by far the nicest one i have ever seen
I had a blue one I got from my grandmother, loved it, sold it in 85
Very Cool. Great resto job. I bought an original '71 510 coup in 1980 (350 bucks) and fixed it up. It still one of my favorite car I ever owned.
Makes a big difference tying in the strut bar to the firewall and best to do the same on the rear of cars that have rear struts also. A lot less flex and car responds faster when you turn that wheel. Car is way nicer than it was when new. Great video thank you.

Thanks for sharing this beautiful Datsun 510!!! Super cool build!!!
So cool. I had a 1978 510 hatchback with black louvers on the rear window and chrome wheels.
Love it. Looks awesome. I will always have a soft spot for the BRE 510's back in the day !!
Congratulations very beautiful car I own a 71 and your project inspired me to continue working on mine
I have a friend restoring one of these right now. I love these cars.
Man she’s a beauty and a work of art! Excellent job sir.

Thanks for the compliment!😆
We have a 71 2door with roll cage. We had 6 510 s at one time. Great car. Best autocross vehicle.
This car is amazing, a big inspiration. Thanks for sharing this!
That is an amazing build, always loved the square body styles of the 70"s, IE 510, BMW 2002I
I know a man that bought 2two 1972 Datsun 510s . He still has them and they look brand new.
Amazing save! Love the Mexican orange. Can’t beat the original look with a potent engine and drivetrain.

I went with an aftermarket digital dash, probably about the same amount of work vs. using the OE Honda cluster.
Amazing build! Congrats!!

Great job on this 510 restomod. Very nicely executed
That's the best one of those ever thanks for the video keeps me inspired it's definitely Jay Leno approved have a great day

nice build

Nice build mate.
Love it.
Wish I still had my 620 ute
Thanks for putting all the details and websites in this
My Dad had a red one of these back in 1972. I think his was a 1970 or 71. That was a very common car in Puerto Rico in the early 70's.
Great video great information. Thanks for all the info to the website gorgeous 510

Gorgeous build!! Love what you’ve done!! Every detail!!
The 2 doors are so hard to get in australia, love it and congratulations
An inspiration!!!!
I'm surprised Datsun didn't give it rack and pinion action. Such a great build, no rock left unturned.
Gr8 job sweet ride. Thank you for sharing it.

absolute Beauty - good Job
Great Paint job..love it
Beautiful and thoughtful build. Could you share the source for your chrome door mirrors please?
These always reminded me of the BMW 2002 a bit.
Except way better than the 2002. 😁
Brilliant work, great video showing us all the detail, I would like to buy the same mirrors if possible, any chance you could let me know where to buy them online as I am in Australia . What model bmw do they come from? Thanks for the inspiration: )
You will need to search "BMW 2002 side mirrors" and see what you can find.
Very nice and wish I still had my 1970 240-Z . I live in Yelm Ea. So who did u have do the body work and paint.
Wonderful job. We used to modify 510s for racing. You didn't show us the brake servo system.
Straight from the MC into a Wilwood proportioning/splitter valve then from there out to the wheels. Fairly simple.
Gorgeous! Was loving it until I realized you dropped a Honda motor into it...

Beautiful
Love this!! ❤
Beautiful!!!!
Fantastic build I think the only change I would want done is my name on the Title :)
Lol, I love how you keep saying "...only 200 horsepower..."
What a sweet ride how much will a build like this run?
I highly recommend to put a heat shield between that exhaust pipe and transmission before you start cooking the oil in the trans...
Mate this is incredible. Did you sell it to build something else? Many of us would have found it hard to sell if we were in your shoes, I imagine!
beautiful !! specially the hoses haha

Superb!

The rubber seals didn't happen to come from Datsport? I probably packed them if they did.
Yep, some did. Good stuff!
Sick ass ride!

Where did you get the mounting kit for the transmission to the motor
That is the original S2000 6-speed transmission mated to the S2000 engine.
Awesome Ride ❗✌🏻
That thing is dope! Would it get better intake air temps if you ran the intake to the side without the headers?
magnificent
Whats the name of the shop who did the body and paint?
Could you please share the body shop that worked on it? I’ve got a 710 here in Oregon in need of bodywork
Check responses below.
Would a zero offset wheel have helper or hurt you
I bet you got a ton of money in that car
How did the engine/tranny swap effect the overall weight? Also what is the weight ratio front to rear?
Never weighed it.
@@Sookigarage The original L series had a cast iron block, cast steel intake and exhaust manifolds, and lead battery up front. I would imagine this 510 is very near a 50/50 ratio.
I see you're in Oregon. Do you know Spreadbury?
Who Doesn’t know Spreadbury?!
Loving the deep dive but the noise from the microphone is horrible, suggest using a lapel mic instead please please, beautiful build though!
I totally agree, audio is crappy. If I do another video, I will get a mic.
🥰
