The band Morphine blazed like a comet across the global music scene in the 1990s, rising from local Boston clubs to major label record deals, international touring, and wide critical acclaim until their tragic and untimely demise in 1999. Intimate band member interviews, live shows and TV appearances, display why their unique and "low rock" sound continues to resonate with music lovers today.

Saw them at the B stage headline of Horde festival 95. I was just a little kid [15], unattended, stoned, only there to crowd surf. Tried that at the Morphine venue, when some guy pulled me down, dusted me off, put his hands on my shoulders and said... "Chill, kid. This is not the place for that. Just relax and enjoy the music."
I did, and a lifetime fan was born.

There will never be another band like Morphine. Mark Sandman led a group who's overall musical style was completely unique and special. LOVE this band. Sure wish I'd have had the chance to see them at least once.

I only ever got to see them once. It was shortly after MS had died. Cape Cod Music Festival on the Barnstable County Fairgrounds. Peter Wolf from J. Geils Band filled in on vox. Everyone was mourning his loss. Coincidentally, the last time I ever saw my friend Leigh Prall, who died like 10 years later.

1:10:00 I still remember that road. I drove it at night on the way home (400 km) after seeing Mark die on stage. We were exhausted from the heat, from drinking too much local wine in the previous days, and from the shock of what we had seen. I still remember the steps (today called "Scalinata Mark Sandman") I took over and over again to get news from the hospital or the police. That journey at night, with my old car going very slowly, with the trees enveloping the road at the sides, I remember it as a strange dream.

There's something special with trio bands where the bass player is also the singer : Rush, Primus, Morphine, SadHappy... they really play what's on their mind and push the boundaries.
