Driving instructor here It takes concentration off the road to hold the car back to 20mph. But lets face facts they want to take away personnel transport from poorer people and working class.
you,ve got it dave👍The "pleb" class and "the elite"plus they cut emissions and get to their mistresses house on time as the roads are nice and clear. The richer middle classes pay a huge indirect tax just for the right to exist on the road
Unfortunately your excuse is one that is countered by saying you're a bad driver if you can't control your vehicle, a better more logical approach is to explain that 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears are accelerating gears with the aim to get up into 4th gear for economy and because you'll produce less emissions than the accelerating gears. They claim to want less pollution but they're making us produce more!
If Khan thinks he's helping emissions reduce by this ridiculous limit, he's wrong. Imperial College research suggests 20 mph have "no net negative impact on exhaust emissions" So definitely points to being a cash cow for London and other councils.
If emissions are the issue then the best method of reducing it is to keep traffic moving at a constant speed. Acceleration (caused by deceleration) uses much more fuel. Surely the use of roads need to be looked at to improve the free flow for the majority. By me there is a bus lane for a few hundred yards up to an island used once every 15 minutes at most. But the cars back up 4 times this length which in turn slows the bus. Counter intuitive much? If this was removed (like it was until 8 years ago) then traffic would flow better. This was put in because the council gets more grants if they have x amount of bus routes... But this is not emission related. Cars are now safer for all than ever, BUT the 20 is plenty minority are winning because local government (councils) know they can use it to their advantage and yet again suck the people of more money and time.

It's all largely a cash grab and not about safety. I was driving in North Wales recently. A part of the UK well known for its draconian and overzealous use of speed restrictions and cameras. I was driving along a 70 mph limit dual carriageway, which for no legitimate reason suddenly became a 50 mph with average speed check cameras. Very soon after entering the 50 mph average speed enforcement section of the road, the reason became clear. The road went into a decline, which, if you were not careful to notice and thus constantly ride your brakes, would have your car naturally continue to gradually keep increasing its speed above 50 mph without it being clearly apparent to you. As soon as the decline ended and the road levelled out again the 50 mph average speed check enforcement immediately ended, and the road returned to a 70 mph speed limit again. It was so obvious that the 50 mph average speed check cameras had been deliberately placed on just that section of declining road to deliberately take advantage of and catch drivers out on the decline for getting fine revenue. Their placement was absolutely nothing to do with safety.
Yeah that section of the A55 east of Llandudno Junction is a nice little earner for the Welsh Government. The speed limit is 50mph for "environmental reasons".
Not only that - that section of the road was "worked on" for about 3 years I think - all they did was pull up the central reservation with all the beautiful daffodils and put armco barrier down - someone aught to investigate who was getting little brown envelopes in their drawers....absolute disgrace. Also got the same issue going on on the promenade at Colwyn Bay where the road has been up for a year now with no work to show for it.... councillors propbably lining their pockets again...!
I felt bad, did 35 mph just as I got to a 30 mph. Got a ticket, took a speed awareness course. All the people on the course were not boy races , and all said that they were just over the limit as they slowed for a 30 mph. The camera van was tucked away out of sight . I asked the operator how many he got, lots, none over 40 mph but just over the 30. Money making scam
About 8 years ago similar. i admit was just entering a 40,from a 30. Camera van was parked about 40 feet away from start of 40. I had accelerated to 36 at this point. Well i guess someone has to pay for the PRIDE paintwork on their vehicles! If argued they will claim a complete intolerance for speeding. So what about our complete intolerance for the many problems our local authorities and police cause? We should be getting massive rebates from all of them!
@@jastat hey so it seems you commented 20 times so I will put my answer to you here too. Why don't you examine your preconceived notions and bottled sense of superiority that has forced you to answer every comment on a video as though 34 km/h is a normal speed that everyone should go on all the time. Even when the car naturally tends to higher on many roads. Thus reducing awareness and raising emissions at the same time. The only good side is it is a cash cow for the county.... And the good of those who target individuals is not shared by most of the general public. You being the exception. It makes you feel like an honourary official.
The worst part about 20mph speed limits and trying to stick to it is the road rage. People get even closer and more angry behind you than they ever did before. It’s very intimidating when you look behind you and you’re causing a queue of angry people just because you are trying to keep to 20mph.!
You're the only person I've ever heard this from and I believe it is a major issue. Everywhere you drive in the UK you encounter bullies. Also, I can count on one hand the amount of men whom would describe their driving ability as being "average" or even "below average" - Check out the "Dunning-Kruger Effect". I suspect that many people believe the driving rules are for "other people" but not for someone as highly skilled and important as them. I also suspect the reason for the lack of courtesy on the roads is due to how cars are marketed now - it's as if the car is an extension of the vehicle owner's ego and social position. For this you need look no further than the craze for having a "personalised" number plate (what I call w⚓ plates). Add to all this all the gadgets in cars now (info-tainment screens, cup holders, in-built mobile phone connectivity) and it's no wonder why motor insurance is so high. Anyway, stay safe and consider getting a dash-cam front and back if you haven't already. 👍🏼
Agreed! I often have to drive into the middle of London for work and while my little van is fine sitting at 20mph in 3rd gear, the cars behind me are very rarely fine with me doing so.
Not your problem, stick to under 20 because that person behind you is not going to pay your fine but your actually saving lots not getting a fine and even better pissing off the bloke holding a speed gun, that really makes me smile when I’m going 15mph in a 30 zone😀
@M S doing 15 in a 30 UNLESS there is something impeding your progress is antisocial and one would be unlikely to pass a driving test using that algorithm.
The 20mph limit on the A501 (dual carriageway, three lanes in each direction) is completely and utterly insane. After that you have the Paddington flyover which used to be 50mph but is now 30; that's actually a motorway with a hard shoulder!
As a former Police officer who spent 25 years both policing the roads AND hating Nick freeman I have to say the man came across well and spoke a lot of sense.
The whole point of a speeding fine is to reduce the amount of people speeding, so when the amount of people speeding increases instead of decreasing then it is evidence that the entire system is broken and is not fit for purpose…. [or that is actually designed to do something else which isn’t being admitted to]
The fining system stinks not just speed cameras but bus lanes, pedestrian zones, red light cameras, box junctions, it's so confusing and easy to be innocently caught especially in London. Don't get me started on parking fines.
Speed limits WERE ALWAYS determined based on safety of the road construction/design and the 90% percentile of what NORMAL DRIVERS would take for speed in that area. It was never determined based on money-making. They have corrupted the entire process.
No, it's the same principle being used, but just adjusted for the more and more aggressive, entitled and distracted, driver of today (with more powerful cars than ever).
@@homie3461 reduction of noise is not a benefit of 20mph limits... revs are much higher at 20 in second gear than they are in third gear at 23mph (where my specific car naturally sits) 25mph would be the best low speed limit IMO. To be honest I live on a main road that is a 20 limit (even though the road is wide and was built for a 40 limit) but the reality is that ONLY Learner drivers do 20mph on that road... most still do 26 - 30.
I am convinced our local authority simply commits fraud. I had a letter saying to pay a discounted amount of £65 by a particular date. The council website did not give that option and forced me to pay £130 saying I had to write to an address miles away to claim back the difference. Letter sent… no reply. I feel like I was scammed. But, Scott, doesn't that happen at any speed limit? Drivers tend to drive up to the speed limit (if not over it), therefore they will always be having to check the speedo.

It was a beautiful day. I would like to make my feelings known with reference to the new speed limits placed on motorcycle riders and motorists which I drive both . I've been driving for 50yrs never had an accident and always been mindful of others on the road The new 20 mph maximum is a idiotic idea, people will not be able to hold that speed ,and will end up with points and fine and could probably lose their licence within a week ,also modern cars don't run at so low a speed and owners will have repair bills blocked catalytic converters. I support the people of Wales and hope that the 30 mph is reinstated with the minimum of 20mph for school to keep the children safe.Graham Ball🇬🇧
If you contest these speeding tickets you will be fined more by the courts, the letters you receive are threatening and bullying in themselves, we need to vote out these councillors who make these cash cow laws.
Here in East Anglia there are a number of villages already zoned to 20 mph through out the village, and yes I believe this is going to become common through out the country with laws being made "willy nilly" to control the population all through the world. I feel sorry for the younger generation for what is about to happen to them because I myself being of the "Older generation" will only be affected for a short time.
There should be an official body in the UK that could be used for people to challenge the local councils implemented speed limits. Some roads just dont suit 20 mph limits and can cause alsorts of issues etc. The counciks have gone mad with low speedblimits and i think sometimes its done deliberately to antagonise drivers
Staying within the 20mph limit requires constant attention on the speed dial, which in turn takes our eyes off the road. Consequently I believe this increases the safety risk as we are less attentive to what is going on around us, and therefore less able to anticipate potential safety risks. Another example of the Nanny state we live in, and the money grabbing local authorities.

I got 4 points (just enough to tip me into a ban) for almost the exact same thing. I was doing ~55-60mph in a 40mph "temporary" speed limit on a dual carriageway for roadworks that at 3-4am (I was working nights at the time) were not there. It was an empty dual carriageway and the speed I was doing felt plenty slow enough considering the facts. Judge was having none of it and as I said 4 points resulting in a ban and a large fine + a condescending telling off. Yet, there are narrow, bumpy, blind, country farm roads with a 60mph limit that I wouldn't feel comfortable doing much more than 20mph on but in the eyes of the law the speed I got banned for on the dual carriageway would be perfectly fine and reasonable on that road - makes complete sense...

Everyone else, inclusding buses and police cars, tend to do about 25mph, which is a far more natural speed to travel at.

We had a School by us in Birmingham for many years (both my lads attended) the Council decided to reduce the speed limit to 20mph fair enough! Many years later the School has closed, but the speed limit has remained at 20mph WHY!!
To try and keep to 20mph, I have to drive in a low gear. The engine running faster is emmiting more fumes. This is just to get people out of their cars.
From your description it seems you don't know how to drive? Also, higher revs with lower amounts of fuel injected doesn't result in more fumes. You don't understand how the engine and transmission actually works.

It's about control of us, Has nothing to do with the environment. Climate lockdowns are coming very soon.
Nothing to do with emissions, it has everything to do with plugging the financial gap. We have it in Wales too on some roads.
