Thanks so much for this. I found an old green Wearever at my local charity shop for $1. The sac had, of course, dry rotted long ago, and the J bar was broken. With your videos to guide me, I now have a nicely function vintage pen.
Thanks for showing me how to do this! Bought an old Esterbrook as "restored' but the J-Bar was in pieces. Bought a new one and worried I would break it. Following your guidance, it was straightforward.
Doing my second pen restoration a C.S 36. My first was a C.S 106, decided on that as the filling mechanism is simple. I really like the way the 36 writes, I dip tested it & got carried away. It writes so nice, well after the oil or gum was removed. Upon initial dip testing it simply wouldn't write, it repelled the ink. I could see oily streaks on the surface of the ink I had dipped it into. Took a hot flush to get it going, which I should have done first! The leaver is fully jammed as is the j bar. Sadly the previous owner bent the leaver slightly. I'm subscribed and will be gleaming your videos for info. I've got a job lot of pens coming, which includes a Hema 56, something I've really wanted to write with.
Patience is most definitely a virtue. I find it relaxing, almost meditative. Think I'm going to have to leave the 36 for now. The J bar is refusing to budge. I have a job lot of pens coming in, which will help getting experience.
Thank you for this. I was able to fix my Hutcheon Bros ebonite with a new j bar I bought today. It was a nightmare getting the broken bar out of a long, narrow barrel and I needed to tweak the new one before it sat flush to the inside but eventually it took. The original was rusted blued tempered steel and the way the j was bent it was dug into the ebonite something awful. Helped quite a bit as it helped me figure out the sac I can get in there. I mocked it all up and it took a big gulp of water and released it as well when I pulled the lever again so I can shellac it all together tomorrow.
Stef, this was exactly the information I was looking for. I have a lovely oversize tapered Sheaffers Lifetime that the previous owner had installed a new sac in, but the J bar is too long. Without going into embarrassing details of breaking the section trying to remove it, sanding the old feed to fit the new section and so on, I needed a tip as to how to solve the root cause of the problem I was having, which was that the J bar is too long and interfered with the section nipple. Thanks again, all the best to you sir!
I am grateful to have found your videos. I have inherited an Easterbrook from my late mother. I does need some repairs. I can now replace the J hook and bladder. I do have another issue that I cannot fin a video for. There is a hair line crack in the barrel that I would like to repair but have no knowledge. I am hoping you will be able to assist me. Many thanks
Thanks for taking the time to share your experience. I'm repairing my first vintage pen ( a cheap one from eBay that won't make me cry if I screw it up). BTW those are hemostats, not forceps. :)
Your welcome, i hope it helps with your repair. Good luck. BTW We try not to get to technical in the videos as we are trying to help the person who has never done this kind of work. Thanks.
I found this handy today. I just replaced the J bar in my Esterbrook. The hook had broken. It took two tries to get it aligned properly with the lever, but it was pretty easy. Thanks!
Hi Stef! Thanks for the videos. As a new pen enthusiast I have a question. Are these pressure bars just friction fit? I am restoring an old celluloid Moore and there is nothing to slide the pressure bar onto with regards to the lever. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated! Thanks again for all the videos they are great! Gary
Hi Garry, if the lever does not have the lugs to fit a floating pressure bar then it will need a J bar. Take a look at my "Pen Pressure Bar" video. Good luck.
Steph I watch this and I have a NEW tool for your pens, available from Ebay about £7, it is a 5 or 7mm endoscope, this connects to your PC, has an LED light on the end and a camera (you can take photo's or video). much better than a torch, and you get to look deep inside the pen, display is to your PC screen. hope this helps you (as you help us so much) J
already seeing the awesome results of that manicure :D -- thnx for the "how to" --- do you think you could post one on how to change the sack of a Parker Vac? thnx my friend!!!
You will need to take a look around. There is a video on a Parker 51 Vacumatic sac replacement. Although it may not be the exact model you have, a lot of the procedures will apply to other pens, Good luck.

Well done with you pen restorations. Just go easy and have patience when working with pens or practice more on cheap pens. Good luck

I used some heavy tweazers and that worked. The key is to twist a little bit and it will move :)
