Good morning Justin, so many goodies in this little 3-minute video. :) I never had any idea that you could use silicone and mineral spirits to seal a tent. I have used silicone for years and years and years. Wouldn't I have like two known that trick when I was canoeing the rivers. :) whoever gave you that advice about the squirrels and the mice was absolutely spot-on. I am trapping three times as many mice this year at the cabin and the squirrels are absolutely everywhere. I think it is because of the dry conditions we've had since early summer all of the babies have made it. But there is a good note to all of this because of the drought conditions in early June all of the chicks from partridge have made it also. This is going to be great year for bird hunting here in Maine. Hope you're having a great week Justin you and your family! Tom
This information came as a surprise to me as well! I got real excited when I saw that video on how to do it. Those crazy rodents! Lol I hope you have a productive bird season out there! You are going to have yourself a nice comfortable winter! Thanks for stopping by Tom! Always good to hear from you. All the best man! -Justin
That should work out just fine, I’ve applied that concoction to my Luna Solo and it works great ! I think all the critters are super active anticipating a rough winter ! See you soon ! Peace !
I got an old Criss Cross back out. I had a corner of the bed getting wet back when I put it away years ago. I determined that it was just the stitching on the rain fly that got me. I like my hot tent, but at 95+ degrees out, I just can't get a breeze in it.
You put the diy seam sealer to the test yet? I have minipaek xl also. Need to re seal before I go solo campin again,, had small leak last month. I used the sealant that came with it but must have missed spot?
I have! It works perfectly! I am very pleased. I will include a link to the trip I used it on if you are interested. ua-cam.com/video/r1h17yfjr1Y/v-deo.html
I Love this thing! An awesome tent for the money in my experience. Just got back from a 9 day 8 night canoe trip in the Adirondacks...It poured hard a few times....the seam sealer works!!!
Mixed the 100% silicone with the mineral spirits and it clumped up on me. No matter how I mixed it, it didn't spread well enough. Read somewhere to use white gas instead of mineral spirits.
That is odd.....works fine for me and many others that I know. How long did you mix it for. It takes a few minutes. If it's clumping, it needs more mineral spirits would be my guess. Not sure though
You probably didn't use 100% silicone #2. If you use latex sealant/caulk then it will clump up. I got the GE silicone advanced that says 40% more flexibility. There's a more expensive option but I chose the cheaper option because I seal on the inside and outside. I decided not to wipe the excess as others suggested because I want extra caulking to make sure I don't get any leaks. Some people probably suggest wiping off the excess silicone just for appearance. I also use a silicone spray on the entire rainfly of my tents to prevent water from entering any tiny holes that may exist that are hard to see. They have it at Walmart next to their seam sealer.
There is a slight difference......the fabric is a little darker now where I applied the sealer....fortunately for me, that does not bother me. I just returned from a 9 day 8 night canoe trip, it rained quite heavily a few time, and all day on Wednesday.....the sealer worked! Tent kept me and all my gear dry! -Justin
I have yet to have any issues with them. So far I am very pleased with my tent.....For the money I paid for it, I still think it is a great tent. I'll take some of the short comings. I don't want to pay $700 for a hot tent.
I bought minipeak xl last year. My 1st hot tent, and I thought it was cool they are here in my home state. I seam sealed with tube they give you. Took a while and hard not to make a mess even with dental syringe for application. The zippers tend to snag on the loose strings on inner, as well as the seams and inner tent pieces look mis matched(color and general shape) My last trip it rained good and she started to leak(the outer). Have to re seal before next week. Over all I like the tent, and having a stove is so cool. I just never had to seal my Eureka TCOP and we went have been through a lot!!
@@olysasquatch I am a fan of Eureka tents! I have a few, and they have never let me down. I have had great luck with my Minipeak xl. Nothing bad to report. My zippers work very smooth and hardly ever snag......but I don't really use the inner. I have once, the first time I used it. The seam sealer that is provided sucks. Homemade sealer is the way to go. I was just on a 9 day canoe trip and I used this tent. It poured several times, and all day on wednesday. Never leaked. Not a drop. The tent did it's job. I was pleased. Over all I am so happy with my tent I just ordered the 4 person Megahorn. A lot of people have claimed they have had bad luck with Luxe products. So far, I am nothing but happy with mine. It has been a solid product in my experience so far. And it has seen some adverse conditions. I hope I am just as pleased with the Megahorn. Cheers man! Thanks for stopping by. -Justin
Bought and used seam sealer before but this is a awsome amazing idea! Thank you!
Thank you! This is now my go to method. Give it a try.

hot tents are no fun in the 90's
Sounds like a great trip to the Adk's have fun
Leaving Saturday morning!!!!
Did it dry clear? I’m researching and your way looks easy process. Thanx
It does dry clear and it works great
Have a good trip sounds like a good one
Thank you! Looking forward to it! Should be fun
What an awesome trick! 👍👍👍
So far so good.......!
Awesome dude. I need one of those tents and a stove to go inside it.
Yes you do man! Yes you do !!!
Awesome, can't wait to watch your adventure with Cragdwella.
What adventure ? Is there going to be an adventure ? 😳😳😳
lol
Should be a ton of fun .......!
I liked the wipe down hint.
🤣
Thank you brother great video direct, to the point.👍
I am glad you like it! This is now my go to method for seam sealing, It works well
Somebody from TartTent needs to send this guy a ProTrail LI ASAP
That would be pretty awesome! What an excellent suggestion!!
I wonder if it’s any better not wiping. I’ve been wet twice inside a tent. I really hated it lol.
I'm not sure. Everything I have seen or read about the subject recommends wiping. Getting wet in a tent is no fun
I see there are different types of silicone caulk you can buy - like type 1 or 2... any difference?
There must be a difference. Not sure what it is though
Great job thanks for sharing cheers
Thank you for watching and commenting!
Lol weak in the knees lol starts shaking 😆
Bahahahahaha! I am thrilled that you enjoy the sense of humor
Thanks I needed that .lol
This works! It is my go to method now
How soon after applying do you wipe it down and would sealing both sides of the seam be overkill and not necessary.
Thanks for sharing this tip btw, going to pick up what I need later today.
Do a seam and wipe it down. I seal inside and out. It may seem overkill, but it is better than getting wet

@@ItsGoodintheWoods Awesome and Thanks 😊
Was it just a dry rag to wipe over???
Yes. This method works great
Lol a little disturbing how much you like that tent man lol.... we thin silicone down for various purposes in construction.

After I apply the sealant, how long does it take to dry?
Let it sit for a couple hours and it's good
This works great. It is now my go to method
As a matter of fact , I have a few tents that need sealing...it's that time again
Thanks for the reply. I have 2 tents to seal. I figure I'll seal the seams Friday night and a second coat on Saturday. Thanks.
@@Louisvilledc You are welcome. Let me know how it goes and what you think about the process please. Have a great weekend
