Old thread I know and I did all of this and it fails on gmail account settings. I have spent time trying to get my dvr email alerts and today at 3.27am (had to be up for work at 7) I resolved the issue. It's NOT the dvr it's the google account.
Go into your google account and go to security. You want app password , click the top drop down box if it shows you 2 and select other type in dvr and click generate, this will give you a random password ignore all of the instructions it gives you write the password down and close google account page and go back to dvr email settings and in password enter the google generated password and click test and it will say successful.
I don't know why but it works, I also have 2 step verification on whether that's required too I don't know

app passwords are still available in gmail settings and work on the NVR. I've done it today (09/02/2024)

good video, would note that you could go into a bit more detail in each of the fields and what to set them as, if you're using an outlook/microsoft account, and have 2FA active, you will get a notification on your 2FA device, and it will give you a password.
Enter your actual password for your email account FIRST, this will prompt the 2FA process to trigger, you will then need to use the password it gives you in the "username, password, confirm password" section where you put your email address.

In your network settings make sure you have a dns like 8.8.8.8 in the box

Allow external app access on Gmail if it does not work.
