- During the 'Undiscovered Disneyland' presentation at the 2013 D23 Expo in Anaheim, California, Tony Baxter and Josh Shipley were on hand to present their recreated version of Journey Into Imagination, the classic Epcot Center attraction starring the Dreamfinder and his popular, purple creation, Figment. Using old video footage, still pictures, and concept art, Journey Into Imagination was completely recreated in its entirety with the full ride soundtrack for the D23 audience to enjoy.

Same here. I was six. A ride about energy and a ride about automobiles meant nothing to me. But a ride about a magic man with a dragon talking about the imagination? My six year old mind could totally get behind that.

When Imagination opened in 1983, everything was still new, the park was empty and it was open until midnight. Everything was super new and gleaming and full of blistering optimism and inspiration and sheer joy! Nothing sounded or looked run down and you walked out with your mind racing with all the possibilities of what could be accomplished with inspiration and technology!
I love Figment and Dreamfinder. This brought happy tears to my eyes! So many wonderful memories of my all time favorite attraction.
Didn't know about this! Hopefully this means Disney knows how much people loved this timeless ride and will think about bringing it back! My favorite as a child. So beautiful and inspiring!
I have to admit I was never a huge fan in my teen years, but seeing this convinces me they should just restore this ride to the original version. It would be a great addition to Epcot!
I truly miss this version of the ride. It’s not the same without Dreamfinder.
During the introduction of this, Tony Baxter said, quote: "These characters will grow on you from this, maybe from what happens later...uh...won't go there." then briefly can be seen rubbing his head as though he said something he should't have. Just an observation.

Disneylandisyourland yes, that was Chuck McCann, and I believe Figment was voiced by Billy Barty! There were a few different revamped versions of this ride, one where Dreamfinder was voiced by Monty Python’s Eric Idle, but to me nothing beats the original....
Actually Chuck McCann voiced Figment. The Dreamfinder was voiced by the late Billy Barty, who was perhaps, the most famous dwarf actor of the 20th century.

@@southparkboyproductions6040 TBH Eisner was supposedly a big fan of the original ride and was extremely unhappy with the reimagining of the ride (to fit the HISTA Imagination Institute.) After he complained about the new ride, with the lack of Figment and the classic "One Little Spark" song not being featured, he demanded their return to the ride.
I was just joking. I know the ride had a lot of technical difficulties during its run. But, this made the Eisner hate even worse. I think the fans should be thankful that Eisner hated the new ride!
This is making me optimistic we're getting a restore or at the very least a version 4.0 with Dreamfinder coming home
It would be really cool to actually have the ride sorta focus on Dreamfinder's reintegration.
I really hope DreamFinder is brought back into the ride in person. He was my favorite character besides Figment. Bring back this version of the song too!

Ok, so, who wants Disney to bring this back with one added feature. AUGMENTED REALITY GLASSES!! It would be great to see you grab some "imaginitive glasses" that you can take on and off to see basically a nothingness BUT then see the ride with a bunch of cool stuff

The ride was overly complicated and constantly broke down. It cost them a ton of money and never worked right. Eventually large parts of it needed to be removed due to the complexity of it all. It was a case of great form, bad function.
In the 90s, digital cameras were on the rise. As a result, Kodak (the ride's sponsor) was going downhill fast. Since the company was under contractual obligation to fund a refurbishment, they had very little cash to fork over to Disney for a full refurbishment. As a result, they requested a new version that would cut down sponsorship costs by removing parts of the attraction that were difficult (and expensive) to maintain.
Sadly, the versions that came after became valuable lessons for Kodak and Disney that cutting corners can cost a lot more than you may think.

No, Zidders is right. If you go watch MartinsVids' tribute to Journey Into Imagination (which I highly recommend), he goes into detail about this. The big circle section in the beginning, where the cars loop around the Dreamfinder's blimp, constantly caused sync issues with the cars. When they converted the old ride into Journey Into Your Imagination (which opened in 1999), they took that section.
Evilgidgit4Ever they ( Michael Eisner) thought it was It was out dated and asked for it to be redone at the time Kodak was its sponsor. And they didn't have the money to redo it but they gave him a small portion so that's why we got the crappy version now well at first it was crappier than the one we have now the reason that it was changed again because of fans who disproved of the remake.

I’d like to see them bring back Journey into Imagination. If it can’t return in ride form, it could make a good 3D movie ala Mickey’s PhilharMagic.
I rode this in 1988. It was the only thing I really enjoyed at Epcot.
I was here in 87 I was 9 years old just hearing the music to this ride makes me tear up it was wonderful. but something special that a lot of people forgot about this ride is when it opened in 1985 the first people to ride this was President Ronald Reagan and his family and all of his staff with mickey mouse and the gang. yes the ride was that good. I value Walt Disney you can tell that he loves people and children I hope to go again this year in April Glad you were their in 88 to see this Wonderful Ride.

I never saw the newer versions of this w/out the Dreamfinder.
I have to admit it. I have always liked Figment more then Mickey Mouse.
I heard the newer generations of Figment make him a brat, while the original was more innocent. My all time wish would for this original ride be on the West Coast.

The newer iterations of Figment lack the child-like innocence of the original. They changed his attitude/personality into much more of a mischievous troublemaker.

Am I the only one who likes Epcot Center better than the Magic Kingdom. I rode this back in the Summer of 1985 a year before the Living Seas, although the golden coloring book for Epcot shows a scene from it.

Honestly with the technology they have today it wouldn’t be that hard to reimagine the original ride with better tech that wouldn’t break down as easily better synchronized music and animatronics and if they need a sponsor that can provide a vision for that with something similar that Kodak used to do I think Canon would probably be a good one
I know the ride was long and complicated, but it told a great story - kind of Walt's story in a revised concept. The edited, shorter revision was hideous and incoherent - here are 2 VERY iconic Disney created characters that were just tossed aside - if this would have been "Imagination Mountain" it would still be there instead of inside an ugly 1980's office building. With today's technology I can't imagine why this can't come back to the parks and then Disney could create movies and marketing around the characters. This was truly Disney at it's glory in the 80's - so sad this just went to hell...now we get Guardians of the Galaxy overlay crap rides and second hand Marvel characters...sad...
I'd say put the current ride out of it's misery, and give us a Dreamfinder and Figment 4D show we all deserve.
I was thinking how this ride should return. Since we still won’t have the turntable, that same scene (where you meet Dreamfinder and Figment on the airship) should be in a brand new preshow. This will lead to the loading area/the dream port as a way of continuing the story. The first scene would be the work of art scene. Then, we head to the large room with the white sculptures/the sound lab. Then the literature scene/the sight lab. Then the performance scene/smell lab. Then the science and technology room/the upside down house. Then the finale/the current’s finale. But keep the roomful of figments. Then to the unloading area. Then walk to the down stars imageworks were replicas of some of the original imageworks games will be at(including the rainbow corridor!). BAM! You got a nice return of the ride!!

the original cut of one little spark is so much better, just the instruments used to make the melody sound whimsical and inviting, also figments first words are too cute
Dreamfinder coming back seems like the most logical choice, and with the ride closing in 2014 for a "revamp"...
I loved Figment but I liked him from the original ride better, I dislike his role in the new ride because it makes him seem kinda like a brat a little. I also miss the dream finder as well. I hope they improve the ride in the near future to bring the dream finder back and make the ride great again.
About 11 years to the day, and we still don’t have an update Journey into Imagination.
Since the rumor is that it'll be closed for all of 2014, I expect something decent. So happy that something potentially worthy will be there since Future World needs all its pavillions with good attractions.

If this was a ride that made mechanical/break-down issues, couldn't they just have shut it down and re-engineered it? I guess I'm just pining for this original version which was so amazing, in an age where Epcot could use more inventive and original rides like this.

the biggest issue was the sponser for the ride Kodiak was on the down turn and backed out
The death of this most wonderful attraction had to do with EPCOT's "sponsorship" program. Kodak was the sponsor for about 2 decades before digital media made it hard for Kodak to stay afloat. Sadly, Kodak couldn't afford to financially sponsor this ride. There was also a beautiful fountain sculpture outside the pavilion that was simply beautiful. The "Imagination Fountains" ...also gone and replaced by very cheap looking pyramid-like sculptures. I think Disney should re-imagine this attraction and make something even better than the original without any sponsorship other than the visitors and contributions of Disney park enthusiasts.
Someone get Apple to sponsor this please. I'm sure Apple has the funds and could really make this pavilion shine.

The current version of this ride is not good. It might be better just to gut it, and use Dreamfinder and Figment in some sort of 4D adventure.

If only they don't turn it into inside out…I think Disney has so much potential to actually bring the original back. Probably not exactly the same, but at least make it more heart-catching with the story of the Dreamfinder and figment together again.

Ah Westcot that would have been a great park. We can only hope that a rumored third park would be westcot with the original journey into imagination.

The third gate was suppose to be where the Toy Story parking lot is today.
The reason they closed the original image-works was cause it kept failing at passing accessibility codes from what I heard.
hopefully disney brings back delta dreamflight (but still keep buzz lightyear).

I still feel that they could incorporate most of this into all of the EMPTY space in the current attraction. I never understood why GM got rid of the original World of Motion ride, especially considering it catered to FAMILIES, inc: Mom and Dad, the ones who actually BUY GM cars with money that junior (who's busy riding Test Track) DOESN"T have. Nothing against Test Track, but I think they should have kept both...TT get's junior over there, while the rest of the family rides WoMotion & shops
