In a nutshell, one is British military, the other are Swiss Civilians. Even though their civilians, their skills are so well regarded, that they are regular participants at military musical events, like this one where they were special guests at a Royal Marine concert, you can see the rest of the RM band sat behind the drummers.

Steve, FYI: 'Corps' is NOT pronounced 'corpse' (like a dead body) - it is pronounced like 'core' (of an apple! The P & S are silent). 👍☺

Technicaly "core" is the american pronounciation and "kawps" is the British, however they are often switched with British going more core and US going more kawps.
      Either pronounciation is therefore fine.

One (RM) is composed of full-time active military who play drums in addition to their other military duties, and are from UK. The other (TSC) is made up of regular civilians from Switzerland who play drums as a semi-professional hobby. Btw, neither group is made up of dead people. They are Corps not a corpse. 😂

The current His Majesty's Royal Marines Band Service was formed in 1903, currently consisting of five bands. However there has been Royal Marines drummers on every ship of the Royal Navy for over 350 years. Top Secret was forrmed in 1991 in Basel, Switzerland. Their style is similar to the American drum corps style, which you see in most high school bands and American military services.

Hi Steve you really need to check out British Army Flash Mobs. In the UK we actually have the Army in full uniform appear on our streets at certain times of year usually leading up to Christmas and they do a flash mob of military bands playing music. The Royal Marines Band Service is the musical wing of the Royal Navy and an independent element of the Royal Marines. It currently consists of five bands plus a training wing - the Royal Marines School of Music at HMS Nelson - and its headquarters is at HMS Excellent, Whale Island, Portsmouth.
    Corps of Drums
The bands are always led by 'buglers', who are trained on both the side drum and the bugle as well as the Herald Fanfare Trumpet (natural trumpet); this section of the band is referred to as "the Corps of Drums", which since 1903 is now situated at the front of the band. Whilst similar to army corps of drums, these are members of the Royal Marines Band Service, although they retain their own rank structure. RM Buglers have a similar history to Army 'drummers' in that they were used to convey orders on a ship on drums and bugles, and would then mass onshore into corps of drums, though they were still expected to work as individual soldiers, also known in slang by the Royal Navy as drummers. These drummer-buglers trace themselves back to the raising of the Royal Marines in 1664 as a maritime foot regiment, with six drummers attached to its battalions, making them the oldest specialisation in the Royal Marines. Today's buglers carry out duties ranging from repatriation services (sounding Last Post bugle call), mess beatings (drum displays), beating retreat (marching displays) and concerts on behalf of the Royal Marines and the entire Royal Navy.
Top Secret Drum Corps is a drum corps based in Basel, Switzerland. With 25 drummers and colour guard section, the corps became famous for its demanding six-minute routine performed at the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo in 2003. With its invitation to Edinburgh, Top Secret became one of the first non-military, non-British Commonwealth acts to perform on the Esplanade at Edinburgh Castle.
Since its success in 2003, Top Secret was invited to return to Edinburgh in 2006 with a new routine. They were invited a third time in 2009 and again in 2012, 2015, 2018 and 2022. Under the leadership of Erik Julliard, the band is also responsible for the founding of the Basel Tattoo, a military tattoo show similar to the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, now held annually in Basel.

Bands of the Royal Marines are just what they sound like, military bands of the Royal Marines, there are actually 5 bands one at each of 4 Royal Marine bases and one at the bands training academy. Each has a Corps of Drums element along with the rest of the bands. They are the ones with the really fancy drum wraps and white helmets.
Top Secret Drum Corps are civilians from Basel, Switzerland who come together to do this as a hobby. They are the ones wearing black with shite feathers in their hats.
These are 2 of the best drum lines in the world and I've been told the Royal Marines have an open invitations to Top Secret to play together any time.
Edit: should mention for outdoor shows Top Secret like to bring the pyrotechnics too, check out either Edinburgh Tattoo one year they were there (2022 the were) or Bassel Tattoo

Re comment from Martin the magician, the Royals were NOT called Navy Light Infantry, they were raised on 28 Octobere 1664, from the bands of the freemen of the city of London and were called The Duke of York & Albany's Maritime Regiment of Foot. They faught at the battle of bunkers Hill and actually took the hill after other Reiments in York's division failed. Hence the Nursary Rythme, also after this battle was when the US decided to form a Marine Corps. The Btits nickname was Boot Neck & the Spams leather necks. Knowledge gained through " Loning Kindness &a smack on the back of the neck in the old days, during corps history lessons at Deal & Lympstone.

Top Secret are civilians and for entertainment purposes, but the Royal Marines are also full-time serving military and the drums in military was originally for purely military purposes. Drums were used on the battlefield to send messages to the rest of the troops, beating the retreat for instance, and is why the drumming styles of the two are very different. I believe to be even considered as a drummer in the Royal Marines they have to be able to play 3 different instruments. Both greatly respect each other and have performed together before the Queen at a show at Windsor for her jubilee celebrations.

The difference between the two is this. Hear me out if you're a drummer. The Top Secret Drum Corps are the bench mark of snare drumming World Wide and have been for many years. I did my music degree as a drummer 38 years ago and I was studying their patterns then. However, they are flat drummers. Based on stick technique. Reverse sticking and cross stick patterns with a flat out front drum. This allows for a uniform response in both hands. Brilliant for balancing the hands and development. This is visible in the footage. It applies to kit playing too and will only enhance your playing. However, not militarily based as they have never seen conflict. Which is the real basis of this discipline. The top and bottom skins are very tight allowing high response but little expression in tone. There is little point in playing Crossed Grip with a flat drum as this was introduced only for side drum because of the angle. Matched grip would be their justified choice.
Royal Marines play Side Drum. Balanced on the left thigh and creating an angle requiring Crossed Grip. This is military based due to a history of conflict. Allowing the right side to be free for the carrying of a weapon. As seen in the footage. The drum is also deeper in tuning and size. Top and bottom skin slacker in tension and more distant. This allows for more expression in tone, but is considerably more difficult to play due to a lack of response. Or bounce back.
The sound created by the Royal Marines is based on encouraging troop movement. It has been successful in many theatres. Thus the creation of expression within the drum.
The tonality of The Top Secret Corps is driven more by the movement of the soprano, tenor and bass drums. Not in line with military functionality. So therefor more flat in expression. As heard in the footage.
However, the technique of both groups is quite brilliant. And, the Marines will study the Top Secret Drum Corps rudiments with awe. As I did.

They are really into drumming in the swiss city of Basel.According wikipedia 3000 out a total population of 186000 are involved in drumming.I have been to Basel once to see the zoo but unfortunately don't remember much about the city itself.I did see basel drummers at an ice hockey game in La chaux du Fonds involving the local team and a basel team. When your finnished britain and ireland, switzerland is a country well worth a look because its fascinating.

Some 40 years ago a work colleague was retired RM Bandmaster. I suggested he had a fairly easy military life, He explained not only normal Marine training, but band practice too. As Bandmaster he had to be able to play every instrument. I bought him a glass of scotch and we became long term friends.

While RM Band do some infantry training, they are not the regular Royal Marines recruits that progress onto commando training. The Royal Marines Band Service is actually completely independent from the Royal Marines.
They do not pass out for active duty from CTCRM but are the band playing at the passing out parade.
As you can see, women are in the RM Band Service but there are none in the Royal Marines Corps.
They do take on some military support roles when needed. For instance, they were in the clinics giving Covid vaccine doses
